Everyday Products I Stopped Buying: Five ChatGPT and Gemini Suggestions, Put in Context

The five everyday purchases Elton Jones says he stopped making are bagged salad kits, pre-shredded cheese, single-purpose kitchen gadgets, miniature toiletries, and static dusting wands. His alternatives—assembling salad from greens, grating block cheese, using tools already at home, refilling travel bottles, and dusting with microfiber—are practical ideas, not proof that the swaps save everyone money. Whether they make sense for you depends on what you use, what you already own, and the time, cleanup, and waste each option creates.

Jones described asking ChatGPT and Gemini for everyday purchases that might not be worth the money, then changing these five habits. His Tom’s Guide article, published September 15, 2026, is a personal experiment prompted by chatbot suggestions—not a controlled price comparison, product test, or finding that these products are poor value for every household.

That distinction matters: a convenient product can be worth its price if it helps you use what you buy, saves time you value, or avoids work you would otherwise skip. The useful question is not simply “Is this product overpriced?” but “What does it cost me per use, including time, leftovers, storage, and cleanup—and do I already have a workable alternative?”

Which five everyday purchases did the author stop buying?

Jones’s substitutions are straightforward, but they do not guarantee lower costs or better results in every home. This table summarizes the choices he described.

Purchase he ditched Alternative he described What could change the value for you
Bagged salad kits Buy greens and assemble a salad at home How much produce you use, household size, leftovers, and preparation effort
Pre-shredded cheese Buy block cheese and grate it when needed Local prices, how often you grate cheese, and whether you own a suitable grater
Single-purpose kitchen gadgets Use an existing knife or appliance when it does the job Whether the tool you own works adequately and how often you need the task done
Travel-size toiletries and miniature skincare Fill reusable travel bottles with products you already own How often you travel, the bottles’ purchase and reuse, and current travel rules
Static dusting wands Use a multipurpose microfiber cloth The surfaces you clean, the method that works for them, and cloth washing and reuse

How should you test one of these swaps?

Start with one recurring purchase rather than replacing everything at once. Write down the package price, the usable amount, and how frequently you buy it. Then list the substitute’s purchase cost, preparation time, storage needs, washing or cleanup, and likely waste. If you already own the substitute, do a small trial before buying anything new. After one or two normal uses, ask whether the change saved money, reduced waste, or simply created another chore. A result that is financially neutral but easier for you may still be worthwhile; a cheaper option that leaves food unused is not necessarily a saving.

Use current prices from the store where you shop. The article contains no receipt-level comparison, national price study, durability test, or repeatable experiment, so a general rule cannot account for sales, package sizes, household size, or regional availability.

Are bagged salad kits worth buying?

They can be, especially when the included greens, dressing, and toppings help you prepare a meal you would otherwise skip. Buying ingredients separately may suit you better if you use them before they spoil and do not mind assembling the salad; there is no receipt-level comparison here that establishes a universal saving.

Compare what you actually use

A kit bundles components into one purchase. If you make salads often and use the whole kit, that convenience may be valuable. If some toppings or greens routinely go uneaten, assembling your own mix gives you more control over what goes into it—but buying separate ingredients does not automatically reduce waste. Unused greens can spoil too.

Before switching, compare the amount you realistically eat with the package size, the amount of each ingredient you would need to buy separately, and the time you are willing to spend preparing it. Household size and shopping habits matter: a larger bag of greens can be a poor fit if you rarely eat salad, while buying individual ingredients can create more leftovers if you do not use them in other meals. Prices also vary by store and location, so check the options where you shop rather than relying on a general claim that one format costs less.

A practical salad-kit trial

  1. Record how much of a kit your household eats and what remains after the meal.
  2. Price the greens, dressing, and toppings you would actually buy separately, using comparable package sizes.
  3. Estimate how many other meals can use those ingredients before they spoil.
  4. Add the time for washing or chopping only when the product requires it; pre-washed greens may need no additional washing.
  5. Repeat the comparison for a normal shopping trip, not just a sale week.

Handle ready-to-eat greens safely

USDA guidance says produce labeled “pre-washed” or “ready-to-eat” can be used without washing it again. That means preparing a salad at home does not inherently make it safer than using a ready-to-eat product. Whatever ingredients you choose, keep cut produce refrigerated in covered containers or freeze it; do not leave it at room temperature for more than two hours. Clean hands, utensils, and work surfaces are part of safe preparation too.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you portion greens in advance, use a covered container and return it to the refrigerator promptly. Freezing is permitted for cut produce under USDA guidance, but the resulting texture may not suit a fresh salad, so consider whether the frozen ingredient is better reserved for cooking or smoothies. The key point is safe storage, not a promise that either a kit or a homemade mix lasts longer.

Should you buy block cheese instead of pre-shredded?

Grating a block when you need cheese is a reasonable alternative if the small amount of effort suits you. Jones recommends it as a simple swap, but the source does not establish that block cheese is always cheaper or tastes better.

Include the effort and equipment in the comparison

Think about how much shredded cheese you use at a time, how often you use it, and whether the price difference at your store is meaningful to you. Grating takes time and creates a tool to wash. If you already own a grater, using it may be an easy change; if you would need to buy one, include that purchase in your decision rather than treating the swap as cost-free.

Compare by weight or another consistent unit, then estimate the cost of the amount you actually put in a meal. A larger block is not a bargain if part of it dries out or goes unused. Conversely, a ready-to-use bag may be sensible when you cook under time pressure or are unlikely to grate a block. The relevant calculation is the price of usable cheese plus your time and cleanup, not the shelf price alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Convenience counts. A ready-to-use bag may be a sensible choice when you need cheese quickly or are unlikely to grate a block. A block may fit better when you prefer to grate only what you need. Compare the packages available to you and choose based on your own use, not an assumed universal price or quality advantage.

Store cheese according to its packaging

USDA storage guidance distinguishes block and shredded cheeses, and says shredded cheese must be refrigerated for safety. Follow the package instructions for the product you buy; the format alone is not a reason to make a broad claim that one kind is safer than the other. Return either format to refrigeration promptly and use the package’s directions for storage after opening.

When is a single-purpose kitchen gadget not worth buying?

A dedicated gadget is easiest to skip when a tool or appliance you already own can do the task adequately. Jones names egg slicers, avocado slicers, banana cutters, strawberry hullers, and dedicated quesadilla makers as examples to reconsider—not as products proven to be bad purchases.

Ask whether it solves a real problem

Before buying, identify the task and try the tool you already have. A knife may be sufficient for slicing, for example; whether that works well depends on the food and the person preparing it. The relevant test is practical: does your existing option produce a result you are happy with, at an acceptable level of effort?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a three-question check: Do I perform this task often? Do I dislike the current method enough to change it? Do I have room to store and clean another item? If the answers are mostly no, the gadget is a likely duplicate. If a gadget makes a task substantially easier for you, gets used frequently, or helps you prepare food you otherwise would not make, its dedicated purpose may be a benefit.

If it adds another item to store and clean for a job you rarely do, skipping it can be a sensible decluttering choice. There are no comparative durability figures or cost-per-use results for the examples in Jones’s article, so frequency and fit with your kitchen are better guides than a blanket rule.

Consider the complete cost of ownership

A low purchase price does not answer whether an item is worthwhile. Consider where it will live, whether it needs cleaning after each use, and how often it will come out of storage. Those factors do not produce a universal verdict, but they help distinguish a genuinely useful tool from one that duplicates something you already use easily. Borrowing or testing a similar tool first can reveal whether the claimed convenience matters in your kitchen.

Are travel-size toiletries a bad deal?

Not necessarily: a small container can be useful when you need a portable amount of a product. Jones suggests reusable bottles filled from products you already own, but the article does not verify a general price premium or establish that refilling works for every product or trip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treat the reported markup estimate cautiously

The article reports that travel-size toiletries can cost “200% to 400%” more per ounce than full-size products, but it does not name the original data source, brands, geography, sample, or calculation method. Without that basis, the figure should not be treated as a verified markup or applied to a particular purchase. Compare the unit prices on the products available to you if cost is the deciding factor. Make sure you compare the same product type and account for the amount you will actually use during the trip.

Decide whether reusable bottles will pay off for you

Refillable bottles require an upfront purchase and are most useful when you travel often enough to reuse them. Compare that purchase and the effort of refilling with the convenience of buying a small container for a particular trip. If you rarely travel, reusability may matter less to your decision; if you travel regularly, a bottle that suits your routine may be more practical.

Keep a simple break-even estimate: divide the bottle purchase cost by the per-trip amount you would otherwise spend on minis, then consider how many trips you realistically take. This is a personal planning tool, not a claim that every reusable set pays for itself. Also account for the time to fill, clean, dry, label, and store the containers between trips.

Do not assume that a container described as “TSA-approved” automatically meets the rules for every trip. The exact bottle dimensions and current travel requirements matter, and the article did not verify a universal approval claim. Check the applicable official travel guidance before packing, and confirm that the particular container fits the rules that apply to your journey. Rules can differ by destination, airport, and mode of travel, so verify them for each trip rather than relying on a product description.

Can a microfiber cloth replace a static dusting wand?

It can be an alternative for some household dusting, but the available evidence does not show that microfiber outperforms every duster on every surface. Jones says he switched to a damp microfiber cloth; his account is a personal method, not a controlled cleaning test.

Match the method to the surface

If you already have a suitable cloth, try it on the surfaces you clean and see whether the result and effort work for you. Different surfaces and cleaning tasks can call for different approaches; the article does not establish that one cloth or technique is right for every job. Nor does it independently prove the author’s claim that budget static wands simply move dust around.

Try a small area first, especially when a surface has a finish or material you do not normally clean with moisture. Use only the amount of dampness appropriate for the surface, and put the cloth away for washing rather than returning a dirty cloth to a drawer. These are practical precautions, not evidence that microfiber wins every comparison.

Jones also reports buying a four-pack of multipurpose microfiber household cloths for under $10. That was his own purchase, not a current price, a typical market rate, or evidence of what a particular listing costs today. Check local prices and consider how many cloths you need before using the anecdote to plan a purchase.

Keep cleaning cloths clean

USDA household guidance recommends cleaning with warm, soapy water and washing cleaning towels frequently on a hot cycle. This is useful hygiene context, not proof that microfiber is more effective than other dusting tools. A reusable cloth still requires laundering and a place to dry or store it. Count detergent, washing frequency, and the number of cloths needed in any cost comparison.

How can you tell whether a swap will save you money?

There is no single winner across these five categories because the relevant prices and habits vary. A useful comparison includes the amount you actually use, repeat-purchase frequency, preparation time, storage and cleanup, and any waste from unused ingredients. For a substitute that you must buy—such as travel bottles or a grater—include its purchase cost and how often you expect to reuse it.

Use this checklist before changing what you buy

  • Compare usable amounts: Look at the quantity you consume, not only the package price. For cheese or toiletries, compare the unit prices where available.
  • Count leftovers: Estimate whether separate ingredients or a larger container will be used before it spoils or goes unused.
  • Put a value on your time: Include preparation, grating, refilling, washing, and putting tools away.
  • Use what you already own: A swap is less compelling if it requires buying new equipment that duplicates a tool you have.
  • Account for reuse: For a durable item such as a travel bottle, consider how many trips you expect to use it on, while checking the rules for each journey.
  • Check storage and cleanup: A substitute that needs special storage or frequent washing may erase a small price difference.
  • Try the alternative at your scale: Change one habit or buy a small quantity first if you are unsure how much you will use.

A swap is working when it fits your routine and the trade-off is worthwhile to you—not just when one package has a lower sticker price. If convenience prevents food waste or makes cleaning easier, that benefit belongs in your calculation even when it is not printed on a receipt.

What does this list actually prove?

It shows five categories one writer chose to stop buying after asking chatbots for ideas, along with the alternatives he preferred. It does not show that ChatGPT or Gemini independently tested the products, that the two systems agreed on each one, or that the replacements reliably cost less. The story is best used as a prompt to inspect your own repeat purchases, not as a universal shopping rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jones’s motivation, recalled in the article, was: “There’s gotta be a cheaper option than the one I bought…” That is a useful question to ask of a recurring purchase. The answer still depends on real local prices, the amount you use, and what you value about the convenience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I freeze cut produce if I cannot use it in time?

USDA guidance allows cut produce to be refrigerated in covered containers or frozen. For a particular ingredient, follow its package or food-storage guidance rather than assuming freezing will preserve the texture you want.

Do pre-washed salad greens need to be washed again?

Produce labeled “pre-washed” or “ready-to-eat” can be used without washing it again under USDA guidance. Keep cut produce refrigerated in covered containers and handle it with clean hands, utensils, and surfaces.

How do I compare a salad kit with separate ingredients?

Compare the amount you actually eat, the prices of comparable quantities, preparation time, and how much of each ingredient you can use before it spoils. A separate-ingredient mix is not automatically cheaper or less wasteful.

Does shredded cheese need refrigeration after opening?

USDA guidance says shredded cheese must be refrigerated for safety. Follow the storage directions on the package for the specific cheese you buy.

Should I buy a grater to replace pre-shredded cheese?

Only if you expect to use it often enough to justify the purchase, storage, cleaning, and effort. If you already own a suitable grater, include that existing tool in your comparison; the source does not establish a universal price advantage.

Are reusable toiletry bottles automatically allowed for air travel?

No universal approval should be assumed from a product description. Check current official travel guidance and the exact container dimensions for each journey.

How should I wash reusable cleaning towels?

USDA household guidance recommends washing cleaning towels frequently on a hot cycle. That is a hygiene recommendation; it does not establish that a particular cloth type cleans better than another.

Does a microfiber cloth clean every surface better than a duster?

The article reports one writer’s preference, not a controlled comparison. Test a suitable cloth on your own surfaces and use the method that gives you an acceptable result without damaging the finish.

The Bottom Line

These five swaps are prompts for a personal cost-and-convenience audit, not universal verdicts. Check local unit prices, account for time and cleanup, prevent food waste, follow USDA handling guidance, and verify current travel rules before deciding what to stop buying.
