Thanos makes his first Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance in the mid-credits scene of The Avengers (2012), after Loki’s invasion of New York has failed and the Chitauri army has been defeated. The appearance is brief, wordless from Thanos himself, and designed as a reveal rather than a full introduction. Still, it is the moment that confirms the Battle of New York was not an isolated crisis. Loki had been acting with support from a larger cosmic power, and that power was Thanos.
In the film’s main story, Thanos is not named by the Avengers and does not directly interact with Earth’s heroes. His presence is felt through the Other, the Chitauri, and the deal that gives Loki an army in exchange for retrieving the Tesseract. At this stage in the MCU, the Tesseract is understood mostly as a powerful cosmic artifact, but it is later identified as the Space Stone. That retroactively makes The Avengers one of the earliest major steps in Thanos’ pursuit of the Infinity Stones, even though the movie itself keeps his larger plan mysterious.

Where it fits in the viewing order
For a chronoal Thanos watch-through, The Avengers should come first among his MCU appearances. It is not his first major role, but it is the first time the franchise shows him on-screen and links him to events affecting Earth. The scene comes after the main conflict has ended, so viewers watching only for Thanos should still watch the full movie to understand what he was trying to obtain and how Loki’s defeat delays that plan.
- Film: The Avengers (2012)
- Type of appearance: Mid-credits cameo
- Played by: Damion Poitier in this brief reveal
- Connection to the Infinity Stones: Loki’s mission centers on the Tesseract, later confirmed as the Space Stone
- Role in Thanos’ story: Establishes him as the hidden force behind Loki’s invasion
The scene also introduces Thanos through reputation and reaction. When the Other warns that challenging humans is dangerous and that to court death would be a grave mistake, Thanos turns and smiles. This moment is built around menace and implication: he is powerful enough to be unfazed by the failure of a planetary invasion, and he is intrigued by the idea of confronting Earth’s defenders. The line also nods to Thanos’ comic-book association with Death, though the MCU later takes his motivation in a different direction.

The Avengers believe they have beaten Loki and saved the world, but the credits scene reveals that Loki was only a servant in a wider game. Later films expand that game into a galaxy-spanning campaign for the Infinity Stones, but The Avengers provides the first glimpse of the villain who will eventually become the central threat of the Infinity Saga.
Guardians of the Galaxy and the Infinity Stone Setup
Guardians of the Galaxy is the first MCU film where Thanos moves from a silent tease to an active presence in the wider story. Chronoally for a Thanos watch-through, it comes after The Avengers and gives viewers their first real look at his status in the cosmic side of Marvel. He is not the main villain of the movie, but his influence shapes the conflict through Ronan the Accuser, Gamora, Nebula, and the hunt for the Orb, which is eventually revealed to contain the Power Stone.
Thanos appears in a throne-room sequence, played by Josh Brolin for the first time. Ronan contacts him through the Other, the same servant seen in The Avengers, and the scene establishes that Thanos has been using proxies to collect Infinity Stones. Ronan is supposed to retrieve the Orb for Thanos in exchange for the destruction of Xandar, but once Ronan learns what the Orb contains, he keeps the Power Stone for himself. This betrayal shows both the reach and limits of Thanos’ control before Infinity War: he commands fear, but he is still operating through unstable allies.
The film also makes Thanos personal by connecting him to Gamora and Nebula. Gamora is introduced as his adopted daughter, trained as an assassin but secretly trying to escape him. Nebula remains loyal at first, yet her resentment toward Gamora and Thanos is already visible. Their rivalry adds emotional weight to Thanos’ later appearances because it turns him from a distant cosmic tyrant into an abusive patriarch whose quest for power has damaged the people closest to him.

What this appearance adds to the watch order
- Infinity Stone context: The Orb is revealed as the Power Stone, expanding the Infinity Stone storyline beyond the Tesseract and the Mind Stone.
- Cosmic hierarchy: Thanos is positioned above Ronan, even though Ronan’s rebellion proves Thanos is not yet unstoppable.
- Family conflict: Gamora and Nebula’s history with Thanos becomes a crucial thread that pays off in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
- Proxy strategy: Like Loki in The Avengers, Ronan represents Thanos’ early approach of letting others gather Stones for him.
For viewers watching every Thanos appearance in order, Guardians of the Galaxy is essential even though his screen time is brief. It turns the post-credits mystery of The Avengers into a clearer long-term plan: Thanos is seeking the Infinity Stones, he has agents across the galaxy, and the consequences of his ambition are already spreading through families, empires, and entire planets.
Avengers: Age of Ultron and the Infinity Gauntlet Hint
Avengers: Age of Ultron places Thanos back at the edge of the MCU timeline, but his appearance is brief and comes after the main story has ended. Released in 2015, the film itself focuses on Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, Ultron, Vision, and the Avengers’ fracture over artificial intelligence and global security. Thanos does not participate in Ultron’s creation or the battle in Sokovia, but the mid-credits scene reconnects the larger franchise to the Infinity Stones storyline that had been developing through The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.
In the scene, Thanos opens a vault, retrieves a golden Infinity Gauntlet, places it on his hand, and says, “Fine, I’ll do it myself.” It is a short moment, but it changes how viewers understand his earlier appearances. In The Avengers, he worked through Loki and the Chitauri. In Guardians of the Galaxy, he relied on Ronan the Accuser and Gamora to pursue the Power Stone. By this point, both efforts have failed. The line signals that Thanos is done operating only through intermediaries and is preparing to personally hunt the stones.
For a chronoal watch of Thanos appearances, Age of Ultron should come after Guardians of the Galaxy and before Avengers: Infinity War. Even though his screen time is minimal, the scene functions as a bridge between the early era of teasing Thanos and the later era where he becomes the central antagonist. It also helps frame the Infinity Stones already seen across the MCU: the Space Stone in the Tesseract, the Mind Stone in Loki’s scepter and then Vision’s forehead, the Reality Stone in Thor: The Dark World, and the Power Stone in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Later films clarify the issue by treating the Asgardian version as a fake, while Thanos’ gauntlet is the real weapon forged for his mission. In story terms, the Age of Ultron scene is less about explaining the gauntlet’s origin and more about showing Thanos crossing a line: he is no longer a distant cosmic patron watching others fail. He is preparing to become the driving force of the saga.
Avengers: Infinity War as Thanos’ Central Story
Avengers: Infinity War is the first MCU film where Thanos moves from distant mastermind to main character. In watch order, it comes after Thor: Ragnarok and directly follows the mid-credits scene where Thanos’ ship intercepts the Asgardian refugees. Rather than treating him as a final-act villain, the film structures its story around his mission to collect all six Infinity Stones: Space, Mind, Reality, Power, Time, and Soul. The Avengers, Guardians, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Wakandan forces all react to his progress, but the momentum belongs to Thanos.
The opening scene immediately establishes how dangerous he has become. Thanos has already taken the Power Stone from Xandar offscreen, then defeats Thor and Hulk aboard the Asgardian ship before claiming the Space Stone from the Tesseract. He kills Loki, ending one of the MCU’s longest-running character arcs, and sends his Black Order to Earth to retrieve the Time Stone and Mind Stone. This sequence makes clear that earlier appearances were only the setup; Infinity War is where the threat promised since The Avengers fully arrives.

How Thanos’ Infinity Stone quest unfolds
- Power Stone: Already in his possession when the film begins, showing that his campaign is underway before the heroes can organize.
- Space Stone: Taken from Loki after the attack on the Asgardian survivors, giving Thanos control over instant travel.
- Reality Stone: Retrieved from the Collector on Knowhere, where Thanos uses illusions to manipulate the Guardians.
- Soul Stone: Claimed on Vormir after he sacrifices Gamora, turning his conquest into a personal tragedy as well as a cosmic threat.
- Time Stone: Given to Thanos by Doctor Strange after the battle on Titan, preserving Tony Stark’s life for a future outcome Strange has foreseen.
- Mind Stone: Torn from Vision in Wakanda after Thanos reverses Wanda Maximoff’s attempt to destroy it.
The film also gives Thanos emotional weight through his relationship with Gamora. Their scenes explain his ideology: he believes wiping out half of all life will prevent universal collapse caused by overpopulation and scarcity. The movie does not excuse that belief, but it lets viewers understand the ruthless certainty behind it. His grief on Vormir, where the Soul Stone demands the death of someone he loves, reframes him as more than a conqueror collecting objects. He is a fanatic who sees even personal loss as proof of commitment to his mission.

By the final act in Wakanda, Thanos has become almost unstoppable. The heroes make their strongest stand, with Captain America, Black Panther, Hulkbuster, Scarlet Witch, Thor, and others fighting to protect Vision and the Mind Stone. Thor’s arrival with Stormbreaker briefly shifts the battle, and his strike nearly kills Thanos. But Thanos still snaps his fingers, completing the Infinity Gauntlet and erasing half of all life in the universe. In terms of viewing order, this is the essential Thanos appearance: the earlier teases build toward it, and the next film, Avengers: Endgame, exists as the direct response to his victory.
Avengers: Endgame and the Final Battle Against Thanos
Avengers: Endgame is the final major MCU appearance of Thanos in the Infinity Saga, but it uses him in two distinct ways. The film first follows the older Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War, now living in isolation after completing the Snap and destroying the Infinity Stones. This version is calm, wounded, and convinced that his mission is finished. When the surviving Avengers track him down, they find that there is no simple way to undo what he has done. Thor kills him early in the film, ending the life of the Thanos who won.
The main conflict then shifts to an alternate 2014 version of Thanos, created through the Avengers’ time-heist mission. This younger Thanos has not yet collected all the Stones, has not fought the Avengers on Earth, and has not reached the reflective state seen at the start of Endgame. Once he learns that his future self succeeds but is later opposed by the Avengers, his goal changes. Instead of wiping out half of all life, he decides to erase the existing universe completely and rebuild it so no one remembers what was lost.
How Thanos’ role changes in Endgame
In watch order, Endgame should come directly after Infinity War because it is the aftermath of Thanos’ victory. The film is less centered on his philosophy than its predecessor, but it completes the emotional and narrative consequences of his actions. His presence hangs over the first half through grief, absence, and failure: families are broken, cities are quieter, and the Avengers are defined by the fact that they could not stop him. When the 2014 Thanos enters the story, he becomes a more direct final enemy, giving the heroes a chance to confront not only his army but the trauma of the Snap itself.
- Opening Thanos: the post-Snap version who has destroyed the Stones and accepted his victory as permanent.
- 2014 Thanos: a younger variant who discovers the Avengers’ plan and invades the present timeline.
- Final battle role: commander of a full-scale assault against the restored Avengers and their allies.
- Story function: the last obstacle before Tony Stark uses the Infinity Stones to erase Thanos and his forces.
The final battle turns Thanos from the tragic, mission-driven villain of Infinity War into the ultimate test of the Avengers’ unity. He fights Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man directly, then unleashes his army when individual combat is not enough. The return of the vanished heroes reframes the fight as a reversal of the Snap: everyone Thanos removed now stands against him. His defeat comes when Tony Stark takes the Stones and performs his own snap, destroying Thanos’ forces at the cost of his life.

As a Thanos appearance, Endgame is essential because it closes both versions of his MCU arc. The older Thanos proves that his victory brought no lasting peace, only devastation. The younger Thanos shows what he becomes when challenged before achieving his goal: more ruthless, more egotistical, and less willing to pretend his plan is merciful. Together, they make Endgame the final chapter of Thanos’ story in the main MCU timeline and the last step in the recommended Infinity Saga watch order.

After Avengers: Endgame closes the main MCU version of Thanos, Marvel continues to revisit him through animation, alternate timelines, and non-canon projects. These appearances are not required to follow the Infinity Saga, but they are useful for seeing how flexible the character can be when removed from his original path. In watch order, most viewers should place these after Endgame, since they often assume familiarity with the Infinity Stones, the Snap, and Thanos’ role as the Avengers’ defining cosmic enemy.
The most prominent alternate-universe appearances come in Marvel’s animated series What If…?, where Thanos is reimagined across several timelines. In “What If… T’Challa Became a Star-Lord?”, he appears as a surprisingly reformed member of the Ravagers after T’Challa persuades him away from his plan to wipe out half the universe. This version still argues that his genocide plan had merit, but the episode turns him into a comic supporting player rather than an unstoppable villain. It is one of the clearest examples of Marvel reframing Thanos without erasing his core arrogance.
What If…? also uses Thanos to show the danger of even stronger multiversal threats. In “What If… Ultron Won?”, Thanos arrives on Earth with several Infinity Stones, only to be cut down almost instantly by Ultron, who then completes the Gauntlet. The scene works because the audience already understands how powerful Thanos is; defeating him so quickly makes Infinity Ultron feel terrifying. In later multiverse-focused episodes, Thanos or versions of his armor and legacy may appear as shorthand for a conquered timeline, a reminder that alternate realities can compress or overturn years of MCU buildup in seconds.
Other notable non-mainline appearances
- The LEGO Marvel Super Heroes games and specials: Thanos often appears as a playable villain or comedic threat, with his obsession with the Infinity Stones exaggerated for family-friendly adventure.
- Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy animated series: Thanos is used as a major cosmic antagonist tied to the Guardians’ world, leaning closer to the comic-book warlord version than the reflective MCU figure.
- Avengers Assemble: The animated Avengers face Thanos in stories built around the Infinity Stones and large-scale team battles, offering a more traditional superhero-cartoon interpretation.
- Marvel video games: Games such as Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, and mobile titles use Thanos as an endgame boss, playable powerhouse, or event villain.
These projects do not all fit into one shared timeline, so they are best treated as alternate interpretations rather than missing chapters of the MCU. The main throughline is that each version understands Thanos as a cosmic measuring stick: if he is the villain, the stakes are universe-level; if he is defeated quickly, the new enemy must be even worse; if he is redeemed or mocked, the story is deliberately bending expectations. For a chronoal MCU-focused watch, finish with Endgame, then move into What If…? before exploring animated series, LEGO specials, and games as optional expansions of the character’s legacy.

Does Thanos appear in every Infinity Saga movie?
No, Thanos only appears directly in a handful of Infinity Saga entries. His influence is felt across more films because the Infinity Stones drive stories in movies like Thor: The Dark World and Doctor Strange, but he is not physically present in those installments. His major on-screen role is concentrated in Infinity War and Endgame.

Avengers: Infinity War is the most Thanos appearance because it makes him the central character of the film. It explains his goal, shows him collecting the Infinity Stones, and follows his emotional conflict with Gamora. Earlier appearances mostly set him up, while this movie fully defines him as the MCU’s main saga villain.
Is the Thanos in Avengers: Endgame the same one from Infinity War?
Not exactly. The Thanos killed at the beginning of Avengers: Endgame is the same version who won in Infinity War. The Thanos who fights the Avengers in the final battle is a 2014 version brought forward through time, so he has not experienced the events of Infinity War yet.
Are Thanos’ What If…? appearances part of the main MCU timeline?
What If…? takes place in alternate universes rather than the main MCU timeline. These episodes reinterpret Thanos in different scenarios, such as a version who joins the Ravagers or one who is quickly defeated by Ultron. They are useful for seeing how flexible the character can be, but they are not required to follow the main Infinity Saga story.
Bottom Line
Watching Thanos in order turns him from a shadowy post-credits threat into one of Marvel’s most fully developed villains, with each cameo, confrontation, and alternate-universe appearance adding another layer to his mythos. The MCU films are the essential path, while animated series and variants offer interesting reimaginings of what the Mad Titan represents.
Start with his earliest MCU setup, follow the Infinity Saga through Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, then branch into animated and alternate-timeline stories if you want the complete picture. That order gives you the clearest sense of how Thanos evolved from background menace to universe-shaping force.
