Frieza’s forms are not all transformations in the same sense. His first three forms suppress his power, his sleek Final Form is his natural body, and Golden and Black Frieza are trained evolutions. In order, the Super-era ladder runs from First Form through Second, Third, Final, Mecha Frieza, Golden, True Golden, and Black Frieza—with Mecha Frieza a cybernetic detour rather than a natural form. Black Frieza is a Dragon Ball Super manga form, not an animated one in the reporting available through June 2026.
What is the difference between Frieza’s forms?
The key is what each state does. First, Second, and Third Form are shells Frieza uses to keep his immense power contained. Final Form is the body he was born in, not a transformation into a stronger species or a new body plan. Golden and Black Frieza are genuine power-ups that he reaches through training; True Golden is the anime’s name for his mastered Golden state.

On Namek, Vegeta describes Frieza’s kind as beings who alter their shape to conserve energy or disguise themselves. Frieza explains his own reason: “I choose to remain in my present form to keep my power from running amok!” The first three forms are therefore suppression states, not a sequence of transformations that steadily unlocks more of his power.
That distinction also explains why Frieza can begin a fight in a small, armored body and still be a catastrophic threat. Even his lowest suppression state has enough power for him to kill King Vegeta with one blow and destroy Planet Vegeta with a casual blast. In Resurrection ‘F’, after training, he can skip the intermediate shells and move directly from First Form to Final Form.

What are Frieza’s forms in order?
The list below follows the forms relevant to Dragon Ball Super continuity. Mecha Frieza is included because it comes between Namek and his revival, but it is a cybernetic reconstruction—not another natural form.

What happens in First, Second, and Third Form?
These three forms are different-looking containers for Frieza’s power. Their designs change dramatically, but they do not represent a training ladder: Frieza uses them to hold back his natural strength, and can release more of that strength by changing to the next shell.

Frieza’s familiar first body is small, white and purple, with horns, battle armor, and, at times, a hover pod. It is his lowest suppression state, not evidence that he is weak. During his Namek confrontation with Nail, Frieza gives his First Form battle power as 530,000, a figure compiled by CBR in 2024 from the in-series statement. In Dragon Ball Super, he again starts in this form after revival; Gohan cannot defeat him even while Frieza remains suppressed.
Second Form: height and brute force
Frieza grows much taller and bulkier, his first-form armor breaks, and his horns curve upward like a bull’s. He uses those horns to gore Krillin. After changing, Frieza boasts: “Heh heh heh! You’re in for it now. My second form makes the one you’re familiar with look as gentle as a sleeping kitten.” His claim that the form’s battle power is over 1,000,000 is compiled by CBR in 2024; the figure is Frieza’s own in-series claim.
In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Frieza declines to use this shape when Kikono suggests it could make him look taller. Frieza wants height in his natural form instead. The movie calls it the “Second Transformation,” underscoring that it is one of his intermediate shells.
Third Form: an unsettling final shell
The third shell is long-headed and heavily spiked, with an alien, elongated silhouette. Frieza uses it briefly, chiefly in his battle against Piccolo after Piccolo fuses with Nail, then moves on. There is no published in-series numeric power level for Third Form; CBR’s 2024 power-level compilation notes that gap. Frost’s “Charging” or “Assault Form” in Universe 6 is an analogous suppression state, not a form Frieza himself uses.

Is Final Form Frieza’s real body?
Yes. Final Form is Frieza’s birth form, and the name can mislead readers into thinking it is simply his strongest transformation. The armor-like outer body plan of the earlier shells gives way to a sleek, hornless body that is only slightly taller than First Form. After returning from Hell, Frieza often uses this natural form as his default.

On Namek, Frieza also pushes this body into 100% Full Power. The state makes him visibly more muscular and is a temporary effort, not a separate racial form. CBR’s 2024 “Canon Power Level” table presents Final Form at 50% as 60,000,000 and Final Form full power as 120,000,000. Those are guidebook-canon figures as presented by CBR, not measurements published for the later Super-era forms. ScreenRant describes Frieza bulking up after reaching roughly 85% of his power; the full-power state is stamina-hungry, much like the inefficient, muscle-heavy approach associated with Super Saiyan Third Grade.
Frieza’s ability to train rapidly is also rooted in his unusual lineage. Akira Toriyama explained that Frieza’s father is a mutant with abnormally high battle power and that Frieza inherited those mutant traits. That does not mean the later forms are automatic: Golden and Black Frieza still follow deliberate training.
What is Mecha Frieza?
Mecha Frieza is Frieza’s damaged body rebuilt with cybernetics after Namek. King Cold’s doctors reconstruct him, but Super Saiyan Future Trunks defeats him in a single attack. When the Dragon Balls later revive Frieza for Resurrection ‘F’ and Dragon Ball Super, the medical machine restores a fully organic body.

It is useful to include Mecha Frieza in a timeline, but not in the natural-form ladder. His mechanical reconstruction is a historical stop between Namek and his return, rather than an additional form of his species or a new power level he developed through training.
How did Frieza get Golden Frieza?
Golden Frieza is Frieza’s first true trained power-up. After being revived, he trains for about four months—the first time he has ever trained—and develops the form for Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ (2015). The film also begins the story’s early Super-era Golden Frieza continuity; the Super anime’s television debut is episode 24, and the Super manga includes the form as well.
Golden keeps Final Form’s basic body plan but recolors it: a gold exterior, darker gold on the limbs, and purple on the face, hands, and feet. Frieza names it himself, explaining that the color is meant to advertise his new standing: “I know gold’s a bit gauche, but I wanted to ensure you grasp my new position atop the pecking order. And for the sake of your feeble mind, let’s keep the name simple as well; we’ll call this Golden Frieza.”
Why does Golden Frieza lose stamina?
On its first showing, the form is powerful but poorly controlled. Frieza takes it into a fight before learning to regulate its energy, so its strength drains away. Goku identifies the flaw directly: “Your new form is burning through more power than your body can supply. You should have waited until you were used to this form and knew how to regulate it before you started picking fights.” The anime’s Golden Frieza account says the power begins to drop hard after just over five minutes.

A January 2017 V-Jump ranking, as cited by the Golden Frieza wiki, places Golden Frieza at 8 out of 12 on a Super-rivals danger scale and says the form surpasses Super Saiyan Blue. That ranking does not erase its initial stamina problem: Frieza has to improve his control, and the first battle happens before he has mastered the form.
How does Frieza overcome Golden’s stamina cost?
By Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018), the drain is no longer the immediate weakness it was at the form’s debut. Golden Frieza fights Super Saiyan Broly for one hour, according to the film as recorded in the Golden Frieza wiki. The movie also uses Vegeta’s warning to hint that Frieza may eventually reach another level: “You remember how much stronger Frieza was when he came back to Earth? What happens when he achieves a newer form?!”
What is True Golden Frieza?
True Golden Frieza is the Super anime’s name for Golden Frieza after Frieza improves his energy modulation. It is not a new color or a separate body plan; it marks the mastery that addresses Golden’s original stamina flaw.
After another stint in Hell, Frieza trains through mental image-training against Goku. He describes enduring Hell by keeping his composure through its torturous, saccharine barrage, then says the practice strengthened his energy control. When he reveals the refined state, he says: “It’s the true manifestation of Golden Frieza! This is who I truly am in my purest form.”

Continuity matters here: the Super anime names the mastered state “True Golden” and gives Frieza a speech about fixing his stamina control. The manga notes Frieza’s image-training but does not use that same label and explanation; it simply shows him getting stronger. Golden is shared across the film, anime, and manga, but details after the Tournament of Power do not always match between the anime and manga.
What is Black Frieza, and how did he get it?
Black Frieza is a powerful new form revealed in Dragon Ball Super manga chapter 87, “The Universe’s Strongest Appears.” Frieza says he trained for ten years inside a Hyperbolic Time Chamber he found on a planet he had conquered. That is ten years inside the chamber, or about ten real-world days, according to CBR’s 2024 explanation.

Frieza introduces the form with a pointed explanation: “I couldn’t very well keep losing to you Saiyans my whole life, so I needed a bit of a power-up. Meet Black Frieza. Achieving this form took plenty of toil, I’ll have you know.” In the chapter, he arrives on Planet Cereal, kills awakened Gas with one Ruthless Blow, kills Elec, then knocks out True Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta with one punch to each abdomen. He does not kill Goku or Vegeta.

Frieza’s ten years of training happened outside their reach.
How strong is Black Frieza compared with Ultra Instinct?
Black Frieza is shown to be stronger than the versions of Goku and Vegeta he faces in chapter 87: one punch each defeats True Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta. That is a clear feat, but it does not establish a numerical multiplier or settle every possible matchup with every later version of Ultra Instinct.
V-Jump in December 2023, as cited by the Black Frieza wiki, says Black Frieza’s power “cannot be measured” and places it near God of Destruction territory. The same cited description says he is, by a notable margin, above Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Broly, and Piccolo in their strongest forms. The official-site interview accompanying Super volume 24 in April 2025 also frames the gap between Black Frieza and the other strongest characters as a concern. No official numeric battle power for Black Frieza is established.
Why is the form black?
Black Frieza retains much of Final Form’s body plan rather than transforming into a new silhouette. Black covers the lower body, neck, tail, and arms; dark silver appears on the guards, hands, feet, and most of the head, while the white-and-purple torso and lower face remain. Later colored art gives the form a purple aura.

The level above gold is black. I’m only half-joking. No matter how I look at it, it was the only choice.” The credit-card joke explains the naming contrast with Golden Frieza; the form’s significance in the story comes from its training and chapter 87 feats, not its palette alone.

No. In reporting available through June 2026, Black Frieza remains a manga-only form, and the cited coverage says Toei has not animated it. The form’s debut is chapter 87 of the Super manga, not an episode of the Super anime or a film.

The animated Golden Frieza story is separate: Resurrection ‘F’, the Super anime, and Dragon Ball Super: Broly all feature Golden Frieza, while True Golden is the anime’s mastered-state label. A later anime project or remake does not by itself mean that the Granolah story or Black Frieza has been adapted. Check current regional licensing listings for where the existing Super anime and films can be watched.
Which Frieza forms are outside the Super-era main ladder?
Several designs and powered-up states appear in movies, games, or promotional works, but they are not forms Frieza uses in the Super-era canon ladder above.
- Cooler’s Fifth Form: Cooler’s movie-and-game Super Evolution is a sibling character’s power-up. Frieza never uses it.
- Golden Cooler and Golden Meta-Cooler: Promotional or Heroes forms, not Frieza’s Golden evolution.
- Turn Golden and other game states: Names such as Supervillain and Hi-Tension belong to games, not the main Super transformation sequence.
- GT live-show “Powered Up Frieza”: A 1997 stage-show concept, not a Super-canon form.
Keeping those examples separate avoids treating every color change or game mechanic as another rung in Frieza’s official Super-era progression.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Frieza ever spelled Freeza?
Yes. Viz Media often uses “Freeza” in its lettering, while much English-language Super coverage uses “Frieza.” They refer to the same character.
What is Black Frieza called in Japanese?
The Japanese name is ブラックフリーザ, romanized as Burakku Furīza. It is the same name rendered in English as Black Frieza.
Is the Hyperbolic Time Chamber also called the Room of Spirit and Time?
Yes. The chamber is also referred to as the Room of Spirit and Time or the Room of Space and Time. Those names refer to the same kind of isolated training space in the story.
