Yes, The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) can run on many Apple silicon Macs, but it is not yet officially supported as a native Apple silicon app. As of October 30, 2026, the Mac client is Intel-based and runs through Apple’s Rosetta 2 translation layer. ZeniMax says official support for ARM Macs is planned for summer 2027; until then, launch success is not guaranteed on every model.
That distinction matters if you are choosing a Mac specifically for ESO: the published Mac requirements are a baseline, not proof that every Apple silicon configuration will work. Here is what the current compatibility status, system requirements, and documented workarounds actually establish.

No. As of October 30, 2026, ESO’s Mac client is an Intel-based application that uses Rosetta on Apple silicon. ZeniMax Online Studios community representative Jessica Folsom described the current setup as an Intel-based application using Apple’s Rosetta translation layer on Apple silicon Macs.
Rosetta translates Intel apps so they can run on Apple silicon; it does not make ESO a native Apple silicon app. Apple describes Rosetta as working in the background to translate Intel-based apps. That translation layer is the current route for playing ESO on an M-series Mac, rather than a native ARM version of the game.

ZeniMax’s official ARM-Mac support page says ARM Macs are planned to become officially supported in summer 2027. Until that support is delivered, distinguish three different claims:
- Can run: ESO may launch and play on an Apple silicon Mac through Rosetta.
- Native: ESO is not currently a native Apple silicon application.
- Officially supported: ZeniMax has not yet officially supported ARM Macs, though it says that is planned for summer 2027.
The planned date is a roadmap statement, not a guarantee that the native client is available now. Buyers should not treat current Rosetta compatibility as permanent or equivalent to official support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan ESO run on an M1, M2, M3, M4, or M5 Mac?
The official ARM-Mac page covers Apple silicon systems across the M1, M2, M3, M4, and M5 families, and also lists the 2026 MacBook Neo with an A18 Pro. These machines share the same broad compatibility caveat: the current Intel-based ESO client depends on Rosetta, and ZeniMax does not promise the same launch result or performance on each model.
The official Mac requirements list Mid-2017 Macs and newer, but that general requirement does not override the separate ARM compatibility warning. Meeting the age and hardware baseline is not the same as having official Apple silicon support.
No official source cited here gives model-by-model frame rates, graphics presets, battery life, thermals, or a success rate for launching ESO. It would therefore be misleading to promise that a newer M-series chip will run the game at a particular setting or that every listed model will behave identically. The support status remains the same regardless of chip generation: Intel client through Rosetta until native ARM support arrives.
In practical terms, an M1 is not exempt from the ARM caveat just because it is an earlier generation, and an M5 is not automatically guaranteed simply because it is newer. The official page’s broad ARM policy describes support status, not a tested ranking of chips. If you are checking a specific Mac, compare its configuration with the published requirements, but treat the Rosetta-based launch path as something that may work rather than a model-specific promise.

What Mac specs does ESO require?
ZeniMax Online Studios/Bethesda Support’s current Mac requirements page, accessed in 2026, lists a minimum operating system, Mac age, GPU memory, storage, and internet connection. The page does not display an original publication year.
| Requirement | Official Mac baseline | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | macOS High Sierra v10.13 | The listed minimum macOS version; it does not establish ARM support. |
| Mac model age | Mid-2017 Mac or newer | A general minimum, separate from the ARM compatibility policy. |
| GPU memory | At least 4 GB | The listed GPU-memory requirement; the page does not provide Apple silicon performance guarantees. |
| Free storage | 105 GB | Keep at least this much free hard-disk space for the game requirement. |
| Internet | Broadband internet and a persistent connection | ESO requires an ongoing internet connection. |
These are the published Mac baseline requirements, not a model-specific Apple silicon compatibility certification. In particular, do not infer that an Apple silicon Mac is officially supported just because it is newer than Mid-2017 or meets the GPU-memory and storage figures. The separate ARM notice controls that question.
Use the figures as a pre-install checklist: confirm the Mac is at least a Mid-2017 model, allow 105 GB of free space, and have broadband internet that can remain connected while you play. The 4 GB GPU-memory figure is part of ZeniMax’s stated Mac baseline; it is not a promise of a particular quality setting or frame rate on an Apple silicon system. Likewise, macOS High Sierra v10.13 is the minimum listed version, not a recommendation that a current Mac should downgrade to that release.
Will ESO stop working on macOS 28?
There is a compatibility risk to watch, but the available statements do not say ESO will definitely stop working on macOS 28. Apple documents ordinary Rosetta availability through macOS 27 or earlier; beginning with macOS 28, Rosetta functionality will be limited to certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks.
ZeniMax expects macOS 28 in fall 2027 and says it is committed to keeping Mac players able to play ESO after that transition. The company has not, in the cited statement, specified exactly how ESO will be supported after the change. Its plan for official ARM support in summer 2027 is relevant to this transition, but until a native client or other supported solution is delivered, the long-term status remains uncertain.
For someone deciding whether to buy a Mac for ESO, macOS 28 is a reason not to assume today’s Rosetta path will remain indefinitely. It is not evidence that the game will certainly stop working on a particular date or on every Mac running that operating system.

The dates are close together but refer to different milestones: ZeniMax’s stated plan is official ARM support in summer 2027, while Apple’s Rosetta change begins with macOS 28, expected by ZeniMax in fall 2027. Until ZeniMax clarifies how the client will work through that transition, avoid treating either date as a guarantee of uninterrupted play on the present Intel-based client.
Why might ESO fail to launch or display correctly on an M-series Mac?
A launch or display problem does not necessarily mean the Mac misses the general requirements. Apple silicon compatibility is not officially supported yet, and ZeniMax explicitly says its listed workarounds are not guaranteed. The official support page identifies display mode and resolution approaches that may help in some cases.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If ESO does not start, or if its window does not render properly, the guidance does not identify one universal cause or promise a fix for every failure. The steps below are display-oriented options to try in the order that makes sense for your setup. They do not replace the baseline requirements, and none changes the game’s underlying Intel-client status.
Try windowed mode
Launch ESO in windowed mode rather than full screen. This is one of the workarounds listed by ZeniMax for ARM-based Macs. If the game gets to its settings, change the display mode there; the cited guidance does not promise this will resolve every failure to launch.
Change macOS display scaling
In the Mac display settings, change the display setting from Default to Scaled, then select More Space. After adjusting the display, try launching ESO again. The support guidance presents this as a potential workaround, not a guaranteed fix.
Launch on an external display
ZeniMax also describes launching ESO in windowed mode on an external display, including an AirPlay monitor. After entering the game world, move the game window to the primary monitor. This sequence matters: the workaround is to get into the game on the second display first, then move the window.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.
If this workaround is relevant to your setup, an external display is an optional way to try it, not required hardware for ESO. A USB-C external monitor for a MacBook may be practical if the game only launches or renders correctly on a second screen; ZeniMax’s guidance also includes AirPlay, so a wired monitor is not the only listed possibility.
Set a fixed resolution before launching
The official page points to the free Display Menu app as a way to select a fixed resolution before starting ESO. Its guidance says the chosen resolution may be higher than 1900×1200. It does not establish a single best resolution for every Mac or display, so treat this as an option to try rather than a universal setting.
These workarounds are separate options, not required steps that every player must complete. If changing scaling does not help, for example, the official guidance does not say that an external display or fixed resolution will necessarily fix the same problem. Try only the options that fit your display setup, and keep expectations measured: ZeniMax cautions that the workarounds are not guaranteed while ARM Macs remain outside official support.
If a workaround does not help, the evidence does not support a diagnosis based on chip generation alone. Check the general Mac requirements, then use the documented display workarounds while keeping in mind that ARM compatibility is still not officially guaranteed. These steps address documented display-related issues; they do not promise to fix every launch failure.

If ESO is the deciding reason for a purchase, account for the gap between “can run through Rosetta” and “officially supported.” The current compatibility path may be sufficient for some players, but the available official information does not guarantee that a particular model will launch reliably or deliver a defined level of performance.
- Lower risk: You already own an Apple silicon Mac and are willing to try the current Rosetta-based client and its documented workarounds.
- Higher risk: You are buying a Mac solely for ESO and need a guaranteed launch result, particular graphics performance, or certainty that today’s compatibility path will persist.
- What to watch: ZeniMax’s delivery of official ARM support planned for summer 2027, and how it addresses the macOS 28 Rosetta transition expected in fall 2027.
Before installing, compare your Mac with the published baseline: macOS High Sierra v10.13 or later, Mid-2017 or newer, at least 4 GB GPU memory, 105 GB free storage, and persistent broadband internet. Passing that checklist still does not turn the current Intel client into a native or officially supported ARM app.

For a purchase decision, the useful comparison is not simply older versus newer M-series hardware. It is the certainty you need versus the support status today. Someone who already owns a compatible Mac and can tolerate troubleshooting may reasonably try ESO through Rosetta. Someone buying a system specifically for guaranteed ESO access should wait for ZeniMax’s planned ARM support or seek confirmation of the supported solution before purchasing; no source cited here establishes that every current model will work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to install Rosetta manually for ESO?
Apple says Rosetta works in the background to translate Intel-based apps for Apple silicon. The cited ESO guidance identifies Rosetta as the current compatibility layer but does not give a separate manual installation procedure for the game.
Recommended Free Tools
Does the MacBook Neo count as an Apple silicon Mac for ESO compatibility?
The official ARM-Mac page includes the 2026 MacBook Neo with an A18 Pro among the systems covered by its ARM policy. That listing does not amount to a launch or performance guarantee for that particular model.
Can I use an AirPlay display instead of a wired monitor as an ESO workaround?
Yes. ZeniMax’s documented external-display workaround explicitly includes an AirPlay monitor, with ESO launched in windowed mode before moving the game window to the primary monitor once the game world loads.
Will ESO definitely stop working when macOS 28 arrives?
No definite stop date is established. Apple says Rosetta’s role will be limited beginning with macOS 28, and ZeniMax expects that release in fall 2027 while saying it is committed to keeping Mac players able to play. ZeniMax has not specified the exact post-transition solution in its statement.
Does meeting the published Mac requirements mean ESO is officially supported on my M-series Mac?
No. The baseline—macOS High Sierra v10.13, a Mid-2017-or-newer Mac, at least 4 GB of GPU memory, 105 GB free space, and broadband internet with a persistent connection—is separate from the ARM compatibility notice. Apple silicon support is planned for summer 2027, not already established by meeting those figures.
Is a USB-C external monitor required to make ESO run on a MacBook?
No. ZeniMax lists launching in windowed mode on an external display as a possible workaround, and also mentions an AirPlay monitor. An external screen is optional and the workaround is not guaranteed.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: ESO may run on Apple silicon Macs today through the Intel client and Rosetta, but that is not native or officially supported ARM compatibility. ZeniMax lists official ARM support for summer 2027; Apple’s planned Rosetta change in macOS 28, expected in fall 2027, makes the longer-term route worth watching. Check the published Mac baseline—Mid-2017 or newer, 4 GB GPU memory, 105 GB free space, and persistent broadband internet—and treat windowed mode, display scaling, an external display, and Display Menu as possible workarounds rather than guarantees.
