The right enterprise file-encryption software depends on where your files live, how they are shared, and who must control the encryption keys. For a Microsoft 365 estate, start by assessing Microsoft Purview Information Protection; for endpoint and removable-media controls, evaluate Trellix; for PGP-based email and automated transfers, consider Symantec Encryption. Virtru and Tresorit focus on controlled external sharing, while Box KeySafe and Egnyte suit organizations governing content in those platforms. These are different protection models, not interchangeable products, so the comparison below focuses on what each is designed to protect and what to verify before choosing.

What should an enterprise file-encryption tool protect?

“File encryption” can mean several different things: encrypting a document that leaves an application, protecting files on endpoints or removable media, governing content stored in a cloud platform, or maintaining controls over a file shared with someone outside the organization. A product can be strong in one of these boundaries without covering the others. Start with the data flow you need to control, rather than treating encryption as a single feature.

The seven products in this guide cover distinct needs. Microsoft Purview and Symantec Encryption describe protection across multiple workloads or channels. Trellix emphasizes endpoint and removable-media control. Box KeySafe and Egnyte focus on governed cloud content and enterprise key management. Virtru and Tresorit emphasize controlled collaboration, with Tresorit specifically describing provider-inaccessible, zero-knowledge encryption.

Key ownership is another important distinction. A customer-managed key can give an organization more control over key management, but that alone does not establish that the service provider is technically unable to decrypt content. Zero-knowledge encryption makes the stronger claim that the provider cannot decrypt user files. Box and Egnyte describe platform-mediated workflows with customer key-management options; Tresorit states that its servers cannot decrypt user files.

How do the seven platforms compare?

This table summarizes the documented emphasis of each platform. “Not stated” means the available product information does not establish a comparable detail; it does not mean the product lacks the capability.

Platform Documented fit Key and decryption model Protection and collaboration emphasis Controls and integrations noted
Microsoft Purview Information Protection Microsoft 365-centric organizations Supports Customer Key and Double Key Encryption; the cited material does not establish that all Purview protection is zero-knowledge. Sensitivity-label encryption for documents and email, endpoint protection, SharePoint IRM, and DLP across Microsoft workloads and on-premises repositories. Integrated with Microsoft security and compliance capabilities; exact features depend on licensing.
Symantec Encryption PGP-based file, email, endpoint, gateway, and automated-transfer use cases Centralized key and policy management are described; a zero-knowledge model is not stated. PGP Encryption Suite, PGP Gateway Email Encryption, and PGP Command Line Encryption. Centralized key and policy management; deployment details and packaging should be confirmed for the intended use case.
Trellix Data Encryption Endpoint and removable-media control Centralized administration is described; a customer-managed or zero-knowledge key model is not stated. File & Removable Media Protection for files, folders, network shares, and removable media. Compliance reporting and management for BitLocker and FileVault.
Box KeySafe Box customers seeking independent customer-managed keys Uses customer keys through AWS KMS, GCP KMS, or HSMs; Box content remains in platform-mediated workflows. Encryption for content stored in Box; some metadata and search functions have separate limitations. Unchangeable audit log and content kill switch; validate metadata and search implications for business processes.
Virtru Data Security Platform Persistent controls for externally shared files and email End-to-end encryption; private keystore hosting is documented as an option. Revocation, expiry, watermarks, Microsoft and Google integrations, and Secure Share for files up to 15 GB. Virtru reported 6,000+ organizations in 2026; this is a vendor-reported customer count.
Tresorit Enterprise Zero-knowledge collaboration Files and relevant metadata are encrypted on user devices; keys remain inaccessible to the provider, which Tresorit says cannot decrypt user files. Sharing supports expiry, access limits, and download restrictions. Audit-oriented controls; check that its collaboration model suits the organization’s workflows.
Egnyte Secure Content Platform Governed content collaboration with enterprise key management Integrates with Azure Key Vault and AWS CloudHSM; the cited material does not describe it as zero-knowledge. AES-256 encryption at rest and in transit, with TLS. Auditing and governance capabilities are documented.

Which tool fits each enterprise use case?

Use the product whose documented boundary matches the files and workflows you need to protect. A platform’s presence in this shortlist does not establish that it is the best choice for every environment or that it replaces every other control.

Microsoft Purview Information Protection: Microsoft 365 estates

Purview is the most natural first evaluation for an organization already centered on Microsoft 365 and its security and compliance stack. Microsoft documents sensitivity labels that can encrypt documents and email, Double Key Encryption, Customer Key, SharePoint information rights management (IRM), endpoint protection, and data loss prevention (DLP) across Microsoft workloads and on-premises repositories.

This breadth matters when policies need to follow labeled information across more than one Microsoft workflow. It does not mean every protection feature is automatically included in every subscription: Microsoft’s licensing information should be checked against the organization’s actual editions and requirements. Map the documents, mail, endpoints, repositories, and DLP policies in scope, then confirm which required capabilities are available under the licenses being considered.

Symantec Encryption: PGP workflows and automated transfers

Symantec Encryption is a fit to investigate when the requirement is explicitly PGP-based and spans files, email, endpoints, gateways, or automated data flows. Broadcom describes PGP Encryption Suite, PGP Gateway Email Encryption, and PGP Command Line Encryption, along with centralized key and policy management.

That combination points to use cases where an organization needs to handle encryption in both user-facing and automated channels. Before selection, identify which channels actually need coverage and verify the relevant product components, management approach, and compatibility with the organization’s existing processes. The supplied product description does not establish a zero-knowledge model, so do not treat centralized key management as proof that a provider is unable to decrypt data.

Trellix Data Encryption: endpoints and removable media

Trellix is the focused candidate when endpoint storage and removable-media control are central requirements. Its documented File & Removable Media Protection covers files, folders, network shares, and removable media. Trellix also describes centralized administration, compliance reporting, and management of BitLocker and FileVault.

This emphasis is distinct from a cloud-collaboration service: an organization evaluating Trellix should determine which endpoint, media, and share scenarios require policy coverage, and how the centralized administration and reporting fit its compliance operations. The product information provided does not specify a customer-managed-key or provider-inaccessible key architecture, so verify key ownership and recovery responsibilities directly if those are procurement requirements.

Box KeySafe: customer keys for Box content

Box KeySafe is aimed at organizations that store governed content in Box and want to use independently managed customer keys. Box documents support for AWS Key Management Service (KMS), Google Cloud KMS, and hardware security modules (HSMs), as well as an unchangeable audit log and a content kill switch.

KeySafe should not be read as a claim that every aspect of Box content handling is invisible to or inaccessible by the platform. Box notes that file content is encrypted while some metadata and search functions have separate limitations. Map the content, metadata, and search behaviors that matter to users and administrators, then check how the documented limitations affect discovery and daily work. Customer-managed keys increase organizational control, but do not by themselves establish zero-knowledge encryption.

Virtru Data Security Platform: persistent controls for external sharing

Virtru’s documented emphasis is keeping controls attached to shared files and email. The platform describes end-to-end encryption, revocation, expiry, watermarks, private keystore hosting, and integrations with Microsoft and Google. Its Secure Share feature supports files up to 15 GB, according to Virtru’s 2026 product information.

These controls are relevant when recipients are outside the organization and the sender or administrator needs options such as setting an expiry or revoking access. Virtru reported serving more than 6,000 organizations in 2026; that figure is vendor-reported and is not a measure of encryption strength or independent performance. Confirm the recipient experience and the applicable integration and administration requirements in the context of your own sharing workflows.

Tresorit Enterprise: provider-inaccessible keys for collaboration

Tresorit is the clearest match in this group when the requirement is that the service provider should not be able to decrypt files. Tresorit states that files and relevant metadata are encrypted on user devices and that keys remain inaccessible to the provider; it describes its service as zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption.

Its documented sharing controls include expiry, access limits, and download restrictions, with audit-oriented controls for enterprise use. This is a different architectural promise from customer-managed keys in a platform-mediated service. Evaluate whether the zero-knowledge model and its sharing controls fit the organization’s collaboration, administration, and oversight needs; the supplied product description does not establish every detail of recovery or compliance behavior.

Egnyte Secure Content Platform: governed collaboration and key integrations

Egnyte is positioned for governed content collaboration with enterprise key management. Its security information describes AES-256 encryption at rest and in transit, TLS, auditing, governance, and integrations with Azure Key Vault and AWS CloudHSM.

Those details make Egnyte relevant where governance and key-management integrations are part of a content-platform decision. They do not establish that Egnyte is zero-knowledge, or that its integration pattern is identical to Box KeySafe. Organizations should verify how keys are used in the deployed workflow, which content and administrative actions are covered, and how the documented audit and governance capabilities map to internal requirements.

What is the difference between customer-managed keys and zero-knowledge encryption?

Customer-managed keys give the customer a role in managing encryption keys; zero-knowledge encryption makes the stronger architectural claim that the provider cannot decrypt user files. The terms are not interchangeable, and the presence of a key-management integration does not settle who can access plaintext in every part of a service.

In this shortlist, Box KeySafe supports customer keys through AWS KMS, GCP KMS, or HSMs, and Egnyte documents integrations with Azure Key Vault and AWS CloudHSM. Both are platform-mediated content workflows in the documented descriptions. Tresorit explicitly says keys remain inaccessible to the provider and its servers cannot decrypt user files. Microsoft Purview documents Customer Key and Double Key Encryption, but those feature names should be assessed against the specific deployment and licensing rather than assumed to mean that the entire service is zero-knowledge.

For a procurement review, ask vendors to explain the full data path: where encryption and decryption occur, what key material the service can access, which metadata or search functions remain available, and what happens during recovery or administrative actions. Record the answers separately for file content, metadata, email, endpoints, and shared copies; one answer may not apply to every data state.

How should you choose a platform for external file sharing?

Decide first what “control” means after a file leaves the organization. If the priority is revocation, expiry, watermarks, or integrations with Microsoft and Google, Virtru documents those controls for shared files and email. If the priority is a provider-inaccessible key model alongside sharing limits, expiry, and download restrictions, Tresorit is the more directly aligned option in this shortlist.

The right choice also depends on how recipients need to work. A controlled sharing mechanism has to support the intended collaborators and the organization’s review process, not just encrypt the file. During evaluation, test the specific recipient and access scenarios that matter, including the controls administrators can apply and the audit information they can use. The product descriptions here do not establish identical recipient experiences or a universal sharing workflow across the two platforms.

What should you verify before buying enterprise encryption?

Enterprise licensing, certifications, integrations, and partner availability can vary by plan and change over time. The product descriptions here do not provide comparable prices, so request current quotes and confirm the exact package and capabilities for the organization’s region and deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Protection boundary: List whether the requirement covers files in applications, email, endpoints, network shares, removable media, cloud repositories, or external shares. Match each requirement to a documented product capability rather than assuming one platform covers all channels.
  • Key control: State whether the organization needs customer-managed keys, a provider-inaccessible zero-knowledge design, or another arrangement. Ask how each applies to content, metadata, search, and recovery.
  • Existing environment: Check the relevant Microsoft or Google integrations, identity and storage dependencies, endpoint management needs, and cloud key-management services. For Microsoft Purview, verify licensing; for Box and Egnyte, examine the specific key-management integration.
  • External collaboration: Define which recipient controls are required, such as revocation, expiry, watermarks, access limits, or download restrictions. Confirm how those controls work for the intended sharing workflow.
  • Governance evidence: Identify required audit, reporting, DLP, and compliance workflows. Trellix describes compliance reporting; Box describes an unchangeable audit log; Egnyte documents auditing and governance; Microsoft describes DLP capabilities. Confirm the scope and configuration of each.
  • Operational resilience: Ask how keys and encrypted data are recovered when authorized users lose access or administrators change. The product information summarized here does not establish comparable recovery procedures across all seven platforms.
  • Current procurement facts: Verify current packaging, certifications, integrations, data-residency options, and partner availability with the vendor before contracting. The cited product descriptions do not support a like-for-like certification or residency comparison.

Which platform should you shortlist first?

Use the dominant requirement to narrow the first evaluation, then validate the boundaries around it. A Microsoft 365 organization should assess Purview’s label, encryption, and DLP fit against its licenses; an endpoint-centered program should look at Trellix; and a PGP-dependent transfer environment should examine Symantec Encryption. For cloud-content key control, compare the applicable Box KeySafe or Egnyte workflow, while external-sharing priorities point toward Virtru or Tresorit depending on whether persistent controls or provider-inaccessible keys are central.

These starting points are not a ranking. The products solve different problems, and the information available here does not establish comparable prices, universal platform coverage, or equivalent compliance certifications. A shortlist should therefore be built from a written data-flow and key-control requirement, not from the number of features in a product description.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does enterprise file-encryption software cost?

The product information summarized here does not provide comparable enterprise prices. Ask for a quote that identifies the required modules, user or deployment scope, and licensing terms rather than comparing a headline price without its package context.

Does file encryption guarantee that an organization can recover its data?

No such guarantee is established by encryption alone. Before deployment, require a documented recovery process and clarify which administrators can restore access, what key material that requires, and how recovery is tested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does encrypted file sharing prevent recipients from copying or photographing a file?

The documented controls include access restrictions and, for some products, download limits or watermarks, but the available product descriptions do not establish that every form of copying or capture can be prevented. Treat specific recipient-device behavior as something to verify in a product evaluation.

Can one of these products meet every enterprise encryption need?

The seven platforms cover different protection boundaries, from PGP transfers and endpoints to cloud repositories and externally shared content. Whether one product is sufficient depends on the organization’s actual data flows and requirements; the descriptions here do not establish complete coverage of every channel by any one platform.
