Yes, but not with a single AES switch. Protecting sensitive documents in Snowflake or Azure Databricks requires three deliberately separate controls: encrypting the document in your application before upload, encrypting each service’s stored data, and (where supported) configuring that service with a customer-managed key (CMK). An envelope-encryption design can keep document ciphertext and a wrapped data-encryption key (DEK) together while a key-encryption key (KEK) remains under controlled access. Azure Key Vault can be part of that design, but its symmetric AES operations are documented as a public-preview feature, and the available material does not prove that every Snowflake account can use an Azure Key Vault key directly.

What does “secure the AI pipeline” actually require?

AI workloads create several copies of a document, and each copy may have a different encryption boundary. The original upload, staging files, parsed text, chunks, embeddings, vector indexes, notebook outputs, SQL results, logs, prompts, model responses, backups and exports are not one object with one administrator. A control that protects a database volume does not automatically protect plaintext in a notebook, a prompt sent to a model, or an exported index.

Start by deciding which of three layers applies to each representation:

Layer What it protects Who normally controls decryption Important limitation
Application or client-side encryption The document or selected fields before a cloud service receives them Your application or workload identity, using a key you control The receiving service sees ciphertext and cannot process it until an authorized component decrypts it
Service encryption at rest Provider-managed storage such as database files, disks and service metadata The cloud service, with provider-managed keys or a configured CMK At-rest controls do not claim to encrypt data while it is in memory, in transit, or exposed in an application result
Native customer-managed keys A documented platform storage scope, such as a workspace disk or control-plane object The platform plus your key-management policy Coverage, cloud, region, plan, migration behavior and availability coupling are service-specific

Azure’s encryption model describes the client-side boundary this way: “In this model, the calling service or application handles key management and keeps it opaque to the Azure service.” That is the useful distinction for documents whose confidentiality must survive storage-provider access. It also means you must design how an approved AI job obtains plaintext; encryption does not eliminate that requirement.

How should I map documents and derived data before choosing a key?

Create a data-flow inventory before enabling any key. For each item, record where it is created, where it persists, which identity can read it, and whether it must remain encrypted outside a tightly controlled decryption step.

  • Ingress: original files, browser or API uploads, temporary multipart parts and malware-scanning copies.
  • Staging: object-storage files, landing tables and quarantine areas.
  • Transformation: plaintext held in a parser, chunker or notebook process; intermediate files and cache directories.
  • Retrieval assets: chunks, embeddings, vector indexes, metadata filters and document identifiers.
  • Platform artifacts: notebook source and results, job output, SQL history, query results and secret-manager API data.
  • Observability and recovery: logs, traces, prompts, model responses, snapshots, backups and downstream exports.

For every row, choose provider-managed at-rest encryption, a native CMK, application-level encryption, or a combination. Mark whether the requirement is confidentiality from the storage provider, control over key revocation, protection from accidental exposure in logs, or simply compliance with a platform policy. This map prevents the common mistake of applying a disk key to a document that was already copied into an unprotected result or prompt.

How does envelope encryption protect a document?

Envelope encryption uses a short-lived or data-scoped DEK for bulk work and a separately controlled KEK to protect that DEK. Azure’s general model explains that local DEKs are more efficient than calling a key vault for every data operation; the vault is therefore best treated as a root or wrapping authority, not as a remote bulk-encryption endpoint.

  1. Create a DEK for the intended unit. The unit might be one document, a batch, or a tenant partition. Keep the granularity small enough for isolation and rotation, but not so small that key metadata becomes unmanageable.
  2. Encrypt the payload locally. Use a vetted authenticated-encryption implementation, a unique nonce or initialization value for every encryption, and authenticated metadata. The exact mode, chunking format and document granularity require validation against your language library and workload; the platform documentation does not provide a ready-made Snowflake or Databricks recipe.
  3. Wrap the DEK with a KEK. The KEK remains in the key-management boundary. Store only the wrapped DEK with the ciphertext; never place the raw DEK in source code, a notebook, a log line or a model prompt.
  4. Persist non-secret metadata. Record the algorithm and format version, key identifier and version, nonce or chunk information, tenant or document identifier, and integrity-related metadata needed for controlled decryption. Do not store secret material in this record.
  5. Upload ciphertext and metadata. Snowflake, Databricks or object storage can now hold the encrypted representation. A service without access to the KEK cannot unwrap the DEK merely because it stores the row or file.
  6. Decrypt only in an authorized processing boundary. A job obtains permission to unwrap the DEK, decrypts into protected process memory, performs the required parsing or inference, and prevents plaintext from entering logs, query history, notebook output or uncontrolled exports.

Envelope encryption does not make plaintext disappear. Embedding generation, tokenization and model inference generally require plaintext in a compute process, so isolate that process, restrict its identity and decide whether derived artifacts themselves need encryption or access controls.

Can Azure Key Vault itself be the AES document-encryption service?

Treat that assumption cautiously. The Microsoft Learn page “Key types, algorithms, and operations – Azure Key Vault” states: “Symmetric (oct-HSM / AES) key support in Azure Key Vault Premium is currently in public preview.” Preview features are supplied as-is and are not recommended for production. Verify the current status, supported region, tier and service terms before making Key Vault’s AES operation the production data plane.

The cited Key Vault documentation lists 128-bit, 192-bit and 256-bit AES keys and AES-KW, AES-GCM and AES-CBC operations. It describes service-side encrypt/decrypt as single-block operations and notes that local operations can be more performant. For large documents, a practical design is therefore to perform authenticated bulk encryption in a vetted local library and use Key Vault to protect or unwrap the DEK, subject to your threat model and compliance requirements. Do not infer that a listed algorithm is a complete streaming-file format or an end-to-end implementation.

Separate the responsibilities explicitly:

  • Data plane: the library that encrypts document bytes, handles nonces, authenticates metadata and chunks large inputs.
  • Key plane: Key Vault or another approved service that stores, authorizes, versions, audits and wraps the KEK or DEK.
  • Application plane: the identity that requests an unwrap, decrypts in memory and controls where plaintext can flow.

What do Azure Databricks customer-managed keys protect?

Azure Databricks separates CMK coverage into three feature categories. Select the category only after locating the object in your inventory; enabling one does not encrypt every document processed by a cluster.

CMK category Storage boundary Examples and limits
Managed disks Compute-plane disks attached to workspace resources Protects the documented managed-disk scope; it does not automatically cover external storage, prompts or every derived artifact
Managed services Specified control-plane managed data The documented list includes notebook source and results, secret-manager API data, SQL query history and other named objects. It is not a blanket field-level or document-payload control
DBFS root Workspace DBFS root and its supported storage Applies to that root scope, not to all object stores, external tables or data handled elsewhere

The overview identifying these three categories was updated May 20, 2026. Availability still depends on the applicable Azure Databricks plan, region and configuration guide. SQL query-history and query-result protections are at-rest controls; they do not claim to protect data in transit or plaintext held in a cluster’s memory.

Managed-service CMK behavior also affects migration planning. Adding a key protects future writes and does not re-encrypt existing data. If the key is disabled, revoked or deleted, reads and writes can fail after cached key material expires. Before activation, document key-version changes, rewrapping or re-encryption work, backup and recovery, and a tested rollback path.

How does Snowflake’s encryption model differ?

Snowflake states that customer data is encrypted by default and that “Snowflake manages data encryption keys to protect customer data.” Its documented Tri-Secret Secure arrangement combines Snowflake-maintained keys with a customer-managed key supplied through the cloud platform hosting the Snowflake account.

That description is Snowflake’s own key model, not proof that an Azure Key Vault key can be configured for every Snowflake deployment. The supported customer-managed provider depends on the account’s hosting cloud and edition. Confirm the exact account region, cloud and current Snowflake documentation with the account administrator before promising direct Azure Key Vault integration. If direct integration is unavailable, application-level envelope encryption remains a separate option: Snowflake stores ciphertext and metadata, while an authorized service performs decryption outside or within a controlled processing path.

What implementation sequence minimizes exposure and outages?

Use a staged rollout rather than enabling keys on a production workspace and discovering that a job, notebook or backup cannot read its data.

  1. Classify data and owners. Assign an owner and retention rule to each representation in the inventory. Identify regulated fields that require application encryption rather than relying only on storage encryption.
  2. Define identities. Use managed workload identities where supported, separate key administrators from data-processing identities, and grant only the key operations each job needs.
  3. Design the envelope format. Specify authenticated encryption, nonce generation, chunking, metadata authentication, key identifiers, versioning and error handling. Version the format so a future library change is migratable.
  4. Build a non-production key boundary. Isolate the vault network path, enable auditing, test throttling and verify that no raw key, DEK or plaintext appears in logs, notebook output, SQL history or prompts.
  5. Enable native CMKs by scope. Configure the Databricks category or Snowflake capability that matches the stored object. Record plan and region eligibility and preserve the platform’s recovery documentation.
  6. Test normal and denied paths. Confirm an authorized job can unwrap and process a document, while an unauthorized notebook, analyst role and service account receive an expected denial. Test expired, disabled and rotated key versions.
  7. Migrate deliberately. Because some controls apply only to future writes, schedule re-encryption or re-ingestion for existing data where required. Keep old key versions available until all readers and backups have moved.
  8. Operate and review. Monitor key-use logs, failed unwraps, unexpected principals, vault connectivity and data exports. Reassess the inventory whenever a new index, model endpoint or observability sink is added.

How should identity, redaction and network controls work together?

Key access is only one authorization decision. Microsoft guidance favors managed identities, granular access control and network isolation around the vault. Put the vault behind the intended network boundary, restrict private or approved paths, and separate the people who administer keys from the workloads that request unwrap operations.

Databricks secret redaction is useful but not a complete secret boundary. It can redact literal values in described contexts, yet transformations can defeat literal-value redaction. A user who can run unrestricted notebook commands or inspect a shared context may still expose a secret indirectly. Enforce run permissions, isolate interactive and production identities, limit notebook sharing, and audit both key operations and data reads.

What can fail, and how do I recover?

Failure or design mistake Likely effect Preventive or recovery action
Using a remote vault call for every document block Latency, throttling and unnecessary dependency on vault availability Use a locally generated DEK for bulk work and call the vault for wrapping or unwrapping under controlled policy
Assuming a Databricks CMK encrypts all pipeline data External tables, indexes, logs or prompts remain outside the documented scope Map every persistence point and add application encryption or separate controls where needed
Rotating or deleting a key without migration Existing data or backups become unreadable; Databricks reads and writes may fail after cache expiry Retain old versions for the recovery window, rewrap or re-encrypt, and rehearse restoration before revocation
Putting plaintext in query results, logs or prompts At-rest storage keys do not prevent secondary exposure Minimize outputs, redact or tokenize sensitive fields, restrict result retention and audit exports
Assuming Snowflake accepts Azure Key Vault keys Deployment blocks or an unsupported integration is promised Verify the account’s hosting cloud and current Snowflake CMK documentation; keep application encryption independent of that decision
Relying on preview AES operations for a production guarantee Availability, support or behavior may change Check current preview status and use a supported, validated local encryption library for the bulk data path

Which encryption option fits which requirement?

Requirement Best-fit control Trade-off to document
Protect files before any cloud service receives them Application/client-side envelope encryption Your application owns format, decryption, key access and plaintext processing
Meet a platform storage-key policy Snowflake’s native encryption or the applicable Azure Databricks CMK scope Coverage is limited to documented objects and may apply only to future writes
Reduce repeated key-service calls during bulk encryption Local DEK wrapped by a KEK DEK handling, nonce safety and in-memory exposure remain your responsibility
Control who can decrypt a tenant’s documents Per-tenant or per-document DEKs with narrowly authorized unwrap identities More metadata, rotation work and recovery paths
Protect against key unavailability Documented backup, version retention and tested recovery procedures Keeping recovery material available must be balanced against revocation goals

The strongest architecture is usually layered: native at-rest encryption for the platform’s stored objects, application envelope encryption for document confidentiality, and strict identity, network and output controls around every decryption step.

What should a production readiness review verify?

  • The inventory names every document copy, derived artifact, log, prompt, result and backup.
  • Each item has an explicit encryption boundary and an owner responsible for decryption.
  • Envelope metadata records algorithm, format and key versions without exposing secrets.
  • Nonce, chunking and authenticated-metadata handling have been reviewed for the chosen library.
  • Managed identities and least-privilege key operations are enforced; human administrators cannot routinely decrypt workload data.
  • Vault network isolation, audit retention and alerting are enabled.
  • Databricks CMK scope, Snowflake account cloud, plan and region eligibility are verified from current documentation.
  • Future-write behavior, existing-data migration, backup restoration and key-version rollback have been tested.
  • Disabled, revoked, expired and unavailable-key scenarios have an approved recovery procedure.
  • Plaintext exposure in memory, SQL results, notebook output, logs, prompts and indexes is measured and minimized.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Azure Key Vault decrypt a ciphertext column inside Databricks automatically?

No. A CMK configured for a workspace storage scope does not give a Spark job an automatic field-level decryption capability. The application or job must be explicitly authorized to unwrap the DEK and run the decryption library, with plaintext then subject to the cluster’s memory and output controls.

Do I need a different DEK for every document?

Not necessarily. A per-document DEK provides strong isolation, while a batch or tenant DEK can reduce metadata and key-management overhead. Choose the granularity from your tenant-isolation, revocation, rotation and throughput requirements, and record that choice in the envelope format.

Will rotating a KEK force me to re-encrypt every document?

It depends on the envelope design and migration policy. If the document DEKs remain valid, you can often rewrap those DEKs under a new KEK; changing the data-encryption algorithm or format may require decrypting and re-encrypting payloads. Test both paths with backups before retiring the old key version.

How can I prove that secrets are not leaking through notebook transformations?

Use adversarial tests that transform, concatenate, encode and print values in the same notebook contexts your users have. Combine those tests with restricted run permissions, isolated production identities and audit review, because literal-value redaction alone is not a complete boundary.
