Eevee’s evolution depends on the game you are playing. In most core-series titles, use a Water Stone for Vaporeon, a Thunder Stone for Jolteon, or a Fire Stone for Flareon. Espeon and Umbreon require friendship plus the correct time of day; Leafeon and Glaceon use a Moss Rock or Ice Rock in older games and Leaf Stone or Ice Stone alternatives in newer ones; Sylveon needs a Fairy-type move plus the game’s relationship requirement. Pokémon GO uses candy, lures, buddy distance and hearts instead, while special Eevee forms in Let’s Go and Sword and Shield have restrictions.

The eight standard Eeveelutions are Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon and Sylveon. Availability is title-specific, so check the game sections below before spending an item or raising friendship.
Which Eeveelution can I get with a stone?
The three original stone evolutions are the most consistent choices across the series. Use the item from your Bag or the game’s evolution menu while Eevee is in your party; no level, friendship, location or time-of-day condition is needed.

How do I evolve Eevee into Vaporeon?
Use a Water Stone on Eevee. Vaporeon is available in the games that support the original three Eeveelutions, including the early Kanto titles and later games that include the species. In Pokémon GO, Vaporeon normally costs 25 Eevee Candy; the nickname Rainer guarantees it once.
How do I evolve Eevee into Jolteon?
Use a Thunder Stone. Jolteon follows the same direct item procedure as Vaporeon. In Pokémon GO, the normal cost is 25 Eevee Candy, and the one-time nickname Sparky guarantees Jolteon.

How do I evolve Eevee into Flareon?
Use a Fire Stone. This is the direct Fire-type route in the core series. Pokémon GO normally charges 25 Eevee Candy; the nickname Pyro guarantees Flareon once.
How do I evolve Eevee into Espeon or Umbreon?
In standard core-series games, build Eevee’s friendship and level it up at the correct time: daytime produces Espeon and nighttime produces Umbreon. The documented friendship threshold is 220 before Generation VIII and 160 from Generation VIII onward; those figures describe the relevant core-series generation rules, not every spin-off.
Espeon: daytime friendship evolution
Raise Eevee’s friendship to the applicable threshold, then gain a level during the game’s daytime period. If the game has a visible clock, use its day/night state rather than relying on your real-world clock. Do not stand by a Moss Rock or Ice Rock, and do not satisfy Sylveon’s conditions at the same time, because another evolution condition can take priority.
Umbreon: nighttime friendship evolution
Raise friendship to the same generation-appropriate threshold and gain a level at night. As with Espeon, move away from a Moss Rock or Ice Rock and remove competing Sylveon conditions if you want to force the Dark-type result.

FireRed, LeafGreen and Pokémon XD exceptions
FireRed and LeafGreen have no in-game clock, so they cannot produce normal Espeon or Umbreon through the standard day/night method. Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness replaces the clock route with a choice using a Sun Shard for Espeon or a Moon Shard for Umbreon in the Bag.
How do I evolve Eevee into Leafeon?
Leafeon’s method depends heavily on the title. In games with location-based evolution, level Eevee up near the designated Moss Rock. From Generation VIII onward, and in games that explicitly support the alternative, use a Leaf Stone instead. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl support both methods.
Moss Rock route
Put Eevee in your party, travel to the area containing the Moss Rock, and gain a level while close enough to the landmark for the game to recognize it. The location method is used in Diamond, Pearl, Platinum and the later games that retain rock-based evolution. HeartGold and SoulSilver do not contain a Moss Rock, so Leafeon cannot be obtained there by this route.
Leaf Stone route
Where the game supports the newer item alternative, use a Leaf Stone directly on Eevee. Sword and Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Scarlet and Violet and the relevant modern systems support this option. If a Leaf Stone does not trigger evolution in your title, that game expects the location method or does not include Leafeon.

How do I evolve Eevee into Glaceon?
Glaceon uses the Ice equivalent of Leafeon’s rules. In location-based games, level Eevee near an Ice Rock; in games with the newer alternative, use an Ice Stone. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl support both the stone and rock routes.
Ice Rock route
Bring Eevee to the game’s Ice Rock or Icy Rock area and gain a level nearby. Diamond, Pearl and Platinum use this location system. HeartGold and SoulSilver lack the required Ice Rock, so they cannot evolve Eevee into Glaceon through the normal in-game method.

Ice Stone route
Use an Ice Stone in titles that support it, including Sword and Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Scarlet and Violet and other modern games that list the alternative. This avoids searching for a rock, but it does not add Glaceon to a title that excludes the species.
How do I evolve Eevee into Sylveon?
Sylveon requires two things: Eevee must know a Fairy-type move, and it must meet the relationship requirement used by that game. Generations VI and VII use two affection levels; Generation VIII onward uses high friendship. Sylveon is not included in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
Teach Eevee a Fairy-type move before attempting the evolution. Then satisfy the appropriate affection or friendship condition and trigger the game’s evolution event. If Eevee also qualifies for Leafeon or Glaceon, those location-based forms take priority; Sylveon in turn takes priority over Espeon and Umbreon. Move away from a Moss Rock or Ice Rock when you want Sylveon, Espeon or Umbreon instead.
Which Eeveelutions are available in each Pokémon game?
The following matrix shows the important differences between major game families. “Level up” refers to the normal core-series trigger; the Legends titles let you initiate evolution manually once the conditions are met.

What special Eevee restrictions should I check first?
Several named Eevee variants deliberately block the normal branching rules. Check these before trying to use a stone or friendship method.
- Let’s Go partner Eevee: The partner Pokémon cannot evolve. Catch or transfer a regular compatible Eevee if the game and save allow one, then use the three available stone forms.
- Gigantamax-factor Eevee in Sword and Shield: This special Eevee cannot evolve. A standard Eevee is required for the eight-form evolution system available in that game.
- Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: Sylveon is absent, so no amount of affection, friendship or Fairy-type moves can produce it there.
- HeartGold and SoulSilver: The absence of Moss Rock and Ice Rock prevents the normal Leafeon and Glaceon routes.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is listed for Nintendo Switch with an October 16, 2025 release date, and the current eligibility table includes all eight forms. Nintendo Support states, “Pokémon Legends: Z-A is mutually compatible with Pokémon HOME,” but HOME transfers still have game-to-game restrictions; compatibility does not make every Eevee or every evolution available in every save.

How does Eevee evolution work in Pokémon GO?
Pokémon GO does not use core-series stones, level-up events or rock locations. Each normal evolution costs 25 Eevee Candy, with special buddy and lure requirements for the friendship- and location-themed forms.
Use the one-time nickname methods
Rename Eevee to the corresponding nickname before evolving:

Each nickname trick guarantees its corresponding result only once per account. After that first use, the evolution preview is the reliable check: do not spend 25 Candy unless the desired silhouette appears on the evolve button.
Get Espeon or Umbreon with a buddy
- Set Eevee as your active buddy.
- Walk 10 km with that Eevee.
- Keep it as the active buddy when evolving.
- Evolve during the daytime for Espeon or at night for Umbreon.
Pokémon GO uses its own day and night presentation, so confirm the evolution preview before tapping the button. The 10 km condition is separate from the core-series friendship thresholds.

Activate a Mossy Lure Module to select Leafeon or a Glacial Lure Module to select Glaceon, then evolve Eevee while the lure is active and you are within its range. The lure method replaces the core-series Moss Rock and Ice Rock.
Get Sylveon with buddy hearts
Earn 70 buddy hearts with Eevee, then evolve it for Sylveon using 25 Eevee Candy. This is Pokémon GO’s relationship requirement and is not the same as the affection levels in Generations VI–VII or the friendship values in modern core-series games.

Does Pokémon UNITE use the same Eevee rules?
No. Pokémon UNITE uses battle-level evolution for playable Pokémon rather than the core-series item, friendship, location and time-of-day branches. Do not use UNITE as a reference for where to find a Moss Rock, which stone to buy or how much friendship Eevee needs.
Why did Eevee evolve into the wrong form?
Most unexpected results come from a competing condition taking priority or from a special game restriction. Use this checklist before trying again:

- Leafeon or Glaceon appeared: You were close enough to a Moss Rock or Ice Rock, and those location conditions outrank Sylveon, Espeon and Umbreon. Move away from the landmark or use a different area.
- Sylveon appeared: Eevee knew a Fairy-type move and met the game’s relationship requirement. Remove the Fairy move or lower the competing condition only if the title permits a different route; otherwise use the intended time-of-day or stone method.
- Espeon appeared instead of Umbreon, or vice versa: Check the game’s day/night state and make sure Eevee gained the level during the intended period.
- Nothing happens with a stone: Confirm that the title includes the target Eeveelution and that you are using the correct stone. A stone cannot bypass a species exclusion such as Sylveon’s absence in BDSP.
- The partner or special Eevee will not evolve: Let’s Go partner Eevee and Gigantamax-factor Eevee in Sword and Shield are locked from evolution by design.
- Legends game does not evolve automatically: Open the evolution interface and choose the manual trigger after the requirement is satisfied.
What is the easiest Eeveelution to get?
In the core series, Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon are usually the easiest because each needs only its matching stone. Espeon and Umbreon require friendship and a correctly timed level-up; Leafeon and Glaceon depend on the title’s rock or stone system; Sylveon combines a Fairy-type move with a relationship requirement. In Pokémon GO, the one-time nickname trick is the shortest route for any form you have not already claimed, while the ordinary method for the original three is simply 25 Candy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I evolve the same Eevee more than once?
No. An individual Eevee evolves once and cannot switch to another Eeveelution afterward. To collect multiple forms, obtain additional Eevee and apply a different method to each one.
How can I tell whether my Eevee has enough friendship in a modern game?
Use the title’s friendship checker or the relevant in-game party or picnic feedback rather than relying only on battle levels. The evolution option becomes available when the hidden friendship requirement is met; the exact interface differs between games.
Why is Sylveon missing from Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?
Those games do not include Sylveon in their available Pokémon data. The Fairy-type move and relationship conditions cannot create an evolution that the title does not support.
Does Pokémon HOME let me move every Eeveelution into every game?
No. HOME compatibility is subject to each game’s species and transfer restrictions. A form can be stored or moved only when the destination title accepts that Pokémon and its data.
