Yes. The 2026 Steam restorations of Ecstatica and Ecstatica II can run on Steam Deck, and both advertise full controller support. They are Windows builds running through Proton rather than native Linux games. The important caveat is input: Valve had not awarded either game a Verified or Playable badge in the information available through 29 October 2026, and a launch-week Deck owner reported that the built-in controls initially did nothing until they were mapped to keyboard commands in Steam Input. An Xbox-compatible controller is the least troublesome choice. Play the restored Steam versions, not the original DOS release or its bundled DOSBox extra, if your goal is a Deck-friendly controller setup.

Ecstatica II Combat-heavy action-adventure CPU rendering; 4 GB storage; full controller and Steam Input API support $14.99 / £12.49 / €14.99; included in the two-game bundle Windows 10/11; Steam Deck through Proton Oct 2026

Both games launched on Steam and GOG on 26 October 2026. Steam is the documented Deck route because it supplies the Proton installation, Steam Input, Cloud Saves and the controller configuration interface.

Can you play Ecstatica and Ecstatica II on Steam Deck?

They are playable on Deck, but “playable” is not the same as Valve-certified. SNEG’s launch material calls both restorations Steam Deck-compatible and lists full controller support. Valve’s compatibility information was less favorable: Steam showed Ecstatica as Unknown, while the most specific recorded test for Ecstatica II classified it as Unsupported.

The Ecstatica II test was run on 20 October 2026 against build 26057146, six days before release. SteamDB recorded “Valve is still working on adding support for this game on Steam Deck,” with Proton Stable recommended and full controller support listed. Because that test predates launch, it may not represent every post-release change. No equivalent detailed Valve test record for Ecstatica was available beyond the store’s Unknown status.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A community report gives the practical picture. GamingOnLinux user the_korben said both the presentation and 16:10 display looked good on Deck, but the built-in controls were “busted” immediately after release. Mapping the Deck buttons to the game’s keyboard layout was described as easy. No multi-report ProtonDB rating was available, and there is no published confirmation that a Deck-control patch shipped between 26 and 29 October.

Valve’s badge evaluates the default controller layout, matching button glyphs, readable seven-inch interface text and acceptable default performance. It does not publish a frame-rate or battery-life guarantee. A game can therefore launch and run while still failing the default-input test that prevents a Verified or Playable badge.

Which version should you install?

Use the restored Steam builds

The Steam releases are the 2026 restorations of the 1994 and 1997 games. They include modern controls, rebindable inputs, full controller support, Steam Achievements and Cloud Saves. Steam also offers free demos; the Ecstatica II demo is listed as app 5307890 and carries the same controller feature flags, making it useful for checking your own Deck before purchasing.

Do not choose the DOSBox extra for controller play

The Ecstatica restoration includes the original 1994 DOS version as a bonus through DOSBox, and the games retain DOS-era presentation options. That bonus is not the controller-ready restoration executable. The old DOS and Windows discs are collectible versions for a different setup, not the straightforward Steam Deck path asked about here.

Why GOG is a different route

GOG provides DRM-free Windows downloads, but the documented Deck installation and compatibility information concerns the Steam editions. If your priority is a ready-made Proton prefix, Steam Input and Steam Cloud, buy the Steam version.

Which controller works best?

Built-in Steam Deck controls

The Deck itself is a controller, but the launch report indicates that its default bindings could fail. If buttons do nothing, open the game’s page in Gaming Mode, select the controller icon, enter Steam Input, and assign the Deck buttons to the keyboard keys shown by the game. This workaround is preferable to concluding that the game cannot run.

Xbox-compatible controllers

Steam explicitly lists Xbox controller support for Ecstatica, without the USB-only qualification attached to the PlayStation entries. An Xbox-compatible pad can connect to Deck over Bluetooth or USB-C and is the most straightforward external option for either restoration. For pairing, hold the controller’s pairing button between the bumpers, then select it from Steam button → Settings → Bluetooth.

DualShock and DualSense

The game feature flags identify DualShock and DualSense support as USB-only. That is a limitation of these game listings, not of the Deck’s general Bluetooth capability: a DualSense can work with Steam Deck over Bluetooth in other games. For Ecstatica, use a USB connection or let Steam Input translate the controller rather than assuming native wireless support.

Other pads and docked play

Steam’s newer controller guide also lists the Steam Controller and 8BitDo Ultimate among Deck-compatible accessories. Those are general Deck options, not game-specific certifications. For television play, dock the Deck and use a separate pad; the official Steam Deck Dock is listed at $79, while third-party docks are also available. SteamOS supports up to 16 controllers in software, although practical Bluetooth limits are about four on an LCD Deck and five or six on an OLED model.

How do you set up Ecstatica on Steam Deck?

Have a Steam purchase or demo, enough free storage, and a controller if the handheld layout does not respond. The games list Windows 10/11 64-bit requirements, so SteamOS will run them through Proton.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the Steam version or demo. Open the Steam store page on Deck and install the restoration. Ecstatica needs 2 GB of storage; Ecstatica II needs 4 GB.
  2. Let Steam select Proton. These are Windows executables, not native Linux ports. Use the default Proton selection unless a later compatibility notice tells you otherwise.
  3. Check the default controls. Launch the game and test movement, menu navigation and action buttons before changing graphics settings.
  4. Map the handheld if necessary. From the game page, choose the controller icon, open Steam Input and bind Deck buttons to the keyboard layout. Save the layout so it applies at the next launch.
  5. Pair an external pad when preferred. Go to Steam button → Settings → Bluetooth. Pair an Xbox-compatible controller wirelessly, or connect a DualShock/DualSense by USB for these titles.
  6. Choose a renderer. The restorations offer DOS, Windows 95 and modern Software modes. The Software mode is the high-resolution path; the renderer also supports modern widescreen formats, including 4K on suitable PCs.
  7. Enable Steam Cloud. Leave Cloud Saves enabled if you alternate between Deck and a PC. Steam exposes the feature, although an independently documented Deck-to-PC round trip was not available.

Will the Deck hardware handle them?

Yes, based on the published minimum requirements. Both games render on the CPU and state that no GPU is needed. Their minimum is a 1.8 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, DirectX-compatible sound and Windows 10/11 64-bit. Ecstatica requires 2 GB of storage and Ecstatica II 4 GB. Those requirements are far below Steam Deck hardware.

What is different about the two games on a handheld?

Ecstatica

The first game places a protagonist in the demon-cursed village of Tirich, where an almost-unkillable werewolf, fixed cameras and more than 200 animated sequences support a puzzle-and-evasion structure. There is no quest log or minimap, and you can choose a male or female protagonist. Its slower exploration makes a keyboard-mapped Deck layout more manageable once movement and menu keys are assigned.

Ecstatica II

The sequel returns with a prince in a ruined kingdom and adds melee, spells, potions and randomized encounters. More than 1,100 hand-chosen cinematic camera angles accompany a gorier action-adventure design. Because attacks, dodges and item use are more frequent, a working gamepad is more valuable in Ecstatica II than in the first game; use the demo to verify your preferred layout.

How much do the restorations cost?

Prices below were checked in October 2026. SNEG’s listed price for each game is $14.99, £12.49 or €14.99. Steam showed an introductory $13.49 price for Ecstatica, 10% below $14.99, through 9 November 2026. The two-game bundle was listed at $19.99, £16.75 or €19.99; Steam also displayed an Ecstatica Series bundle at $19.96 from $29.98 during the launch promotion.

Both Steam pages showed a free demo. Demos were available during October 2026 Steam Next Fest, and the full games appeared in Steam Scream Fest coverage. A demo is the safest way to test whether your particular Deck needs a remapped layout.

What visual and audio options are included?

You can switch between DOS, Windows 95 and modern Software graphics modes at any time. SNEG says the software renderer handles modern widescreen resolutions, including 4K and beyond; the Deck report specifically confirms a 16:10 presentation. Ecstatica includes an optional “DOS Ceilings” effect, while both games can show the “Shaking Legs” quirk. Three soundtrack choices are available: General MIDI, Windows 95 and DOS. Ecstatica also has an 8K pre-rendered-background extra, while the restoration can optionally render those backgrounds in real time.

What should you do if controls still fail?

  • Buttons produce no response: create a Steam Input layout that maps Deck controls to the keyboard commands. The launch report specifically identified this as the effective workaround.
  • A PlayStation pad will not connect wirelessly: use USB, because the game listings mark DualShock and DualSense as USB-only, or configure Steam Input to emulate a supported pad.
  • The game launches but the layout is confusing: start with the free demo, then bind movement, confirm, cancel, inventory and combat actions before beginning a save.
  • You installed the DOS bonus: return to the restoration executable for modern controller support. The DOSBox extra is not the same input path.
  • You are expecting a compatibility badge: Unknown or Unsupported describes Valve’s certification process, not an absolute launch failure. The available community report indicates that both games can run on Deck, with input configuration as the main launch-week issue.

Are there content warnings?

Steam describes Ecstatica as containing animated violence, blood, gore and mature sexual themes. Ecstatica II is described as containing animated violence, blood and gore. Both are products of the 1990s, and the ratings language reflects those original releases; they may not be suitable for every audience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How were these Deck recommendations chosen?

The recommendations separate three kinds of evidence: SNEG’s advertised controller and Deck support, Valve’s compatibility data and the available community report from actual launch use. The setup favors the Steam restoration because it supplies Proton, Steam Input and Cloud Saves; it favors an Xbox-compatible pad because Steam lists it without the PlayStation USB-only caveat; and it treats Steam Input mapping as a required contingency because the default Deck layout was reported broken at launch. No frame-rate or battery claim is used because no published Deck measurement exists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transfer Ecstatica saves between Steam Deck and a Windows PC?

Steam lists Cloud Saves for the restorations, so the feature is available when you use the same Steam account. An independently documented Deck-to-PC transfer result was not published, so keep a manual backup of important saves if a cross-device handoff matters.

Does Ecstatica II support Steam Input remapping?

The Ecstatica II demo and store data list Steam Input API support, a keyboard-only option and fully rebindable inputs. That lets you build a layout even when the default handheld bindings are not usable.

Can I play either game on a TV without the Steam Deck screen?

Yes. Dock the Deck, connect the display and pair a separate controller. An Xbox-compatible pad is the simplest wireless choice; a DualSense or DualShock should be connected by USB for these games unless Steam Input is translating it.

Are the original 1990s CD-ROM versions useful for Steam Deck owners?

They are not the practical purchase for this purpose. The restored Steam editions contain the modern controller and widescreen work, while the original DOS/Windows releases require a separate DOSBox-style setup.
