Do not assume that every old Dragon Age or Mass Effect title has the same remedy. A game can fail because of the launcher, an EA Play entitlement, a missing expansion, a dependency, the operating system, or a requirement unique to that title.

What should I check before changing files?
Verify account, service, and entitlement conditions first. These checks are reversible and can prevent unnecessary cache deletion or reinstalling.
Check EA service status
If the app reports an authentication, connection, or timeout problem, check EA’s service-status information before troubleshooting your computer. A cache reset cannot repair an EA outage. If the service is unavailable, wait for it to recover and retry rather than repeatedly deleting files.
Confirm the account and EA Play entitlement
Sign in with the EA account that owns the game or has the required EA Play membership. If a title came through EA Play, confirm that the membership is active. A missing Library entry can be an account or entitlement issue rather than a damaged installation.
Check add-ons in the game’s management page
For a missing expansion or downloadable content, open the game in the EA app, choose its management options, and review Manage add-ons. The base game can be present while an expansion is uninstalled or unavailable to the signed-in account.
Read the exact Game Hub requirements
Open the title’s Game Hub and compare its requirements with the computer. EA does not publish one universal “old BioWare game” requirement: each title can specify different Windows or macOS versions, graphics support, storage, and account conditions.
How do I clear the EA app cache?
Clearing the EA app cache is the lowest-risk software fix for a stuck download, offline mode, self-update trouble, or a game that disappeared from Library. It does not fix an EA service outage and does not repair corrupted game files.
- Open the EA app.
- Select Help in the app’s menu.
- Choose App Recovery.
- Select Clear Cache and allow the app to restart.
- Sign in again if prompted, then check Library and retry the download or update.
Cache clearing can reset local app state, so the Library may take a moment to repopulate. It should not remove your purchased entitlement. If the game remains missing while service status is normal, revisit the signed-in account and EA Play checks before reinstalling anything.

How can I fix an EA app installation failure?
For an installation error, repair the environment around the installer before replacing the EA app. Work through connection, partial files, security software, and dependencies in that order.
1. Stabilize the connection
Use a reliable connection and restart the router if downloads repeatedly stop or time out. Avoid switching networks during installation. Error EC:10005 and other network-timeout symptoms should be treated as connection or service-status branches first; if the app otherwise works, report the problem to EA after checking for an outage.
2. Remove partial installer remnants
Cancel the failed installation, close the EA app, and remove only the partial installer files associated with that failed attempt. Do not delete a complete game installation or save folder unless EA support specifically directs you. Reopen the app and start a fresh download.

3. Check firewall and antivirus access
Security software can block the launcher or its background service. In your firewall or antivirus allow-list, permit these EA processes:

Use the executable locations created by your EA app installation. Do not permanently disable protection; add a narrowly scoped exception, retry the install, and remove the exception if it is no longer needed.
4. Install the required Microsoft Visual C++ packages
EA directs users with several installation codes to Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable packages. The relevant package families may include Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022. Install the package appropriate to the error and operating system from Microsoft, not from an unofficial download site, then restart Windows and retry the EA app installation.
Installing a redistributable is a dependency repair, not a guarantee that an individual BioWare title supports a modern operating system. If the Game Hub lists a different requirement, follow that title-specific information.

What do EA app error codes 109, 10701, 10500, and the INST codes mean?
The code narrows the branch of the troubleshooting process, but it is not a universal diagnosis. Use the matching action below and stop when the error is resolved.

EC:109: reinstall only the EA app layer
EC:109 points to corrupted or deleted EA app files. The documented remedy is to delete and redownload the EA app. Treat this as a launcher repair, not permission to erase every game folder: preserve installed games and saves where possible, and reinstall the app from EA’s current Windows distribution.
EC:10701: remove network conflicts temporarily
EA associates EC:10701 with communication through port 3216. Restart the computer first. If the code remains, temporarily disable conflicting virtual network adapters such as Hyper-V, TAP-Windows, or VMware adapters, and turn off VPN software before testing again. Re-enable any adapter you need after the test.
How do I repair an older BioWare game that installs but will not launch?
Repair the game from the EA app before reinstalling it. This checks the game’s files while leaving the launcher and account configuration in place.
- Open Library in the EA app.
- Find the BioWare game and open its three-dot menu.
- Select Repair and wait for verification or replacement of damaged files.
- Launch the game again after the repair completes.
If the game crashes during startup, disable the EA in-game overlay and test again. The overlay can contribute to crashes, and turning it off is a useful diagnostic change because it is reversible.
Check updates and drivers on Windows
Install pending Windows updates and check for current graphics-driver updates from the GPU manufacturer. Older games can fail on a current system because of driver or operating-system changes even when their game files are intact. Compare the result with the exact requirements shown in the Game Hub rather than assuming that a newer computer is automatically compatible.
Use a clean boot for “preparing game” loops
If the EA app remains on Preparing game, close unrelated background applications and retry. If the loop continues, perform a Windows clean boot so that nonessential startup services do not interfere, then launch the EA app with only the required services enabled. Restore normal startup after the diagnostic test; a clean boot is a troubleshooting state, not a permanent gaming configuration.

What changes when I use a Mac?
Mac users follow the same symptom order, cache step, entitlement checks, and game repair path, but permissions and storage format can block installation or launch.

In macOS privacy and security settings, enable Full Disk Access for the EA app when EA’s Mac guidance calls for it. Without that permission, the launcher may be unable to read or write required files even though the account and download are valid.
Check the destination drive
Confirm that the installation drive is writable. An external drive formatted as NTFS may not provide macOS write access by default, which can cause an installation to fail. Move the installation to a writable macOS-supported volume or correct the drive’s write permissions before retrying.
Verify the Mac title requirements
Some older BioWare games have different Mac availability or requirements from their Windows versions. Use the individual Game Hub information and do not infer Mac support from the fact that a Windows copy appears in the same EA account.

Use an EA app reinstall for EC:109, repeated self-update failures, or an app that cannot open after cache recovery. Before removing it, note the locations of installed games and make sure save data is protected by the game’s own save system or cloud-save settings. Download the current EA app rather than attempting to restore Origin on Windows.
Reinstall the game when repair cannot complete
A game reinstall is appropriate when the EA app can open, the account owns the title, the service is available, and Repair repeatedly fails or the same launch failure returns. Confirm available storage and the title’s requirements first. Do not assume reinstalling will solve a missing Visual C++ package, blocked firewall process, unsupported operating system, or inactive entitlement.

How do I use EA Error Reporter when the app will not open?
EA Error Reporter is the escalation path when the EA app itself cannot start or the normal fixes do not identify the cause. EA describes it as a tool that helps diagnose and troubleshoot problems with games or the EA app.
- Open EA Error Reporter from the operating system’s installed-app or EA support tools, even if the EA app will not launch.
- Enter the requested details about the game, operating system, and symptom.
- Submit the report and wait for the confirmation.
- Keep the generated Report ID.
- Give that Report ID to EA Support with the exact error code, the title, whether it is a download, installation, or launch failure, and the steps already completed.
A precise report is more useful than saying only that an old game “doesn’t work.” Include whether the game appears in Library, whether it reaches the main menu, whether the overlay is disabled, and whether the issue occurs on Windows or Mac.

Change one category at a time and record the result. This prevents a cache reset, driver update, and reinstall from obscuring which condition mattered.
- Write down the exact error code and the title’s edition or expansion.
- Record whether the game is owned directly or accessed through EA Play.
- After a cache reset, check Library and entitlement before deleting anything else.
- After installing Visual C++ packages, restart Windows before retrying.
- After changing firewall, VPN, or virtual-adapter settings, restore normal protection and network configuration when finished.
- After a clean boot, return Windows to normal startup.
- Keep the EA Error Reporter ID if escalation becomes necessary.
This approach separates launcher, account, network, dependency, operating-system, and game-file causes instead of treating every failure as corrupted files.
