Dual audio output sends the same sound to two destinations at once—for example, two Bluetooth headphones from a Galaxy phone or a television’s built-in speakers plus headphones. It is not a universal switch: the available routes depend on the exact phone or TV model, its software, the connection type and the manufacturer’s audio rules.
On a supported Samsung Galaxy phone, pair both Bluetooth devices and select them together in the Quick panel’s Media output controls. On a television, simultaneous speaker-and-headphone playback is model-specific; some Sony BRAVIA and Samsung TV models support it, while particular headphone-jack, HDMI or Bluetooth combinations may disable the internal speakers. Check the source device’s manual before buying an adapter.

What does dual audio output mean?
Dual audio output is simultaneous playback of one audio stream through two selected destinations. The destinations might be two pairs of wireless earbuds, two Bluetooth speakers, a TV’s speakers and headphones, or—in supported Android implementations—more than one compatible audio interface.
This is different from sending different sounds to different people. Most consumer “dual audio” features mirror the same music, video soundtrack or game audio. They do not normally let one listener hear a video while another hears a separate app. Call audio, notification sounds and protected media can also follow different routing rules from ordinary media playback.

The term covers several vendor features rather than one industry-wide standard. Samsung calls its phone feature Dual Audio and its supported-TV feature Multi-output Audio. Android’s platform documentation describes multiple-device routing capabilities, but a phone or television manufacturer decides whether to expose those capabilities in its menus. A device can therefore support Bluetooth connections yet lack a user-facing control for playing to both at the same time.
Which devices can send audio to two destinations?
Start with the exact source model, operating-system version and two outputs you want to use. The same brand can enable simultaneous playback on one model and disable it on another.
Samsung Galaxy phones
Samsung’s US and Australia support instructions describe Dual Audio on supported Galaxy phones running One UI 2 or later. The instructions pair two Bluetooth audio devices, then select both in the Media or Media output panel. Samsung describes a two-device limit in that setup. Menu names and availability can vary by model, carrier software and region, so the support page for the particular Galaxy is the controlling reference.
Televisions
TV behavior is more fragmented. Sony states that availability and procedure depend on the BRAVIA model and the connection used. Certain newer models can keep the TV speakers or connected audio system active while headphones are connected, with separate volume controls. Other combinations—especially some headphone-jack, HDMI and Bluetooth arrangements—cannot play through the internal speakers simultaneously.
Samsung describes Multi-output Audio on supported TVs. Its instructions pair a Bluetooth audio device through the Bluetooth Speaker List; when the device connects, the feature can activate and can be turned off in Accessibility settings. That Samsung page was updated on 26 October 2023, so verify the current menu on your TV rather than assuming every model behaves the same way.
Android phones, tablets and TV devices
Android’s Combined audio device routing documentation explains platform-level support, not a promise that every retail device has a dual-output button. Android 12 removed some earlier limitations to enable uses such as audio broadcasting, groups of Bluetooth Low Energy headphones and multiple USB sound cards. The same documentation says that routing multiple USB devices simultaneously was unsupported in the described Android 12 behavior. Android 14’s USB framework can support multiple USB devices when they are different audio-device types and the kernel and vendor implementation provide the required support.

How do I play music through two Bluetooth devices on a Galaxy phone?
You need a supported Galaxy phone, current enough One UI software for its Dual Audio implementation, and two Bluetooth headphones or speakers. Pair each device individually before selecting both as media outputs.
- Pair the first device. Open Settings > Connections > Bluetooth, put the headphone or speaker in pairing mode and select it from the available-devices list.
- Pair the second device. Leave Bluetooth settings, put the second audio device in pairing mode and repeat the selection. Confirm that both devices appear as paired and connected.
- Open the media controls. Swipe down to open Quick settings, then open the Media panel. On some versions the control is labelled Media output.
- Select both destinations. Tap the selector beside each paired headphone or speaker so both are highlighted. Start or resume playback; the same media stream should go to both selected devices.
- Set listening levels. Use the individual volume controls shown in the Media panel when available. A change made on a headphone’s own hardware buttons can affect only that device, while the phone’s panel controls may expose separate sliders.
If the second device is missing, close the Media panel, confirm that it is connected in Bluetooth settings and reopen the panel. Disconnecting either device can cause the phone to fall back to the remaining route. Samsung’s support instructions note that labels and steps differ across software versions and regional variants, so do not treat a menu from another Galaxy model as proof that yours supports the feature.
How can I use TV speakers and headphones at the same time?
There is no universal television procedure. First identify the TV model and whether the headphones use Bluetooth, the 3.5-mm headphone jack, HDMI, USB or an optical transmitter. Then follow that model’s manual for its simultaneous-output setting.

Sony’s BRAVIA guidance says that, on certain newer models, you can connect headphones and choose the TV speakers or a connected audio system as the other output. The two destinations may have separate volume controls. The exact menu path and supported combinations vary, and Sony explicitly notes that some sets disable the internal speakers when a particular headphone jack, HDMI device or Bluetooth route is active.
A practical setup sequence is:
- Connect the headphones using the method supported by the TV.
- Open the TV’s sound or audio-output menu and look for a simultaneous-output, speaker-selection or headphone-speaker option.
- Choose the internal TV speakers or the connected audio system as the second destination.
- Play a source and adjust each volume using the controls the TV exposes.
If the simultaneous option does not appear, do not assume the headphones are defective. The model may not support that combination, or the selected output may force an exclusive route.
Samsung TVs
On supported Samsung TVs, pair the headset or speaker from Settings > Sound > Sound Output > Bluetooth Speaker List (the wording can vary by model), then look for Multi-output Audio in the TV’s audio or Accessibility controls. Samsung’s support instructions say the feature can activate when the Bluetooth device connects and can be switched off in Accessibility settings. Because menus change with model year and software, use the TV’s on-screen manual if that path is absent.
Optical audio and PCM
Some Sony configurations that combine TV playback with an external audio system use a digital optical connection and require the digital-audio format to be set to PCM. PCM is not a universal fix; Sony’s help guide describes it for specific TV-and-audio-system combinations. Change the format only as directed by the exact model manual, because another TV may require a different setting or may not support simultaneous output at all.

What do Bluetooth, optical, HDMI, headphone-jack and USB connections change?
The physical connection determines which routing rules apply. A source may support two Bluetooth devices but not a Bluetooth headset plus its headphone jack, or it may keep speakers active over optical but not over HDMI.
| Connection | What to verify | Typical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | Whether the source supports two concurrent Bluetooth audio routes and the required Bluetooth profiles | Pairing two devices does not itself guarantee simultaneous playback; the manufacturer may limit the number or combination |
| Digital optical (TOSLINK) | Optical output on the TV, a compatible receiver or transmitter, and the digital-audio format required by the manual | Some setups require PCM; optical output may not be available at the same time as every internal-speaker mode |
| HDMI | Whether the TV’s HDMI audio path and connected device support concurrent internal-speaker playback | Some HDMI configurations take exclusive control of the TV’s audio output |
| Headphone jack | Whether inserting a plug mutes the internal speakers on that model | Many TVs treat the jack as an exclusive route, so speakers and headphones cannot both play |
| USB audio | Operating-system support for the specific USB audio-device types and vendor drivers | Android version and kernel support determine whether multiple USB devices can be routed together |
How does Android decide where sound goes?
Android maintains audio routes and exposes the capabilities of the currently selected device. A route can change when a user plugs in USB audio, connects Bluetooth, wakes an HDMI display or disconnects an existing device. Applications are expected to react to those changes rather than assume that the route present when playback began will remain available.
Formats are part of the decision. Devices report supported encodings, sample rates and channel counts; an app or system component that requests a format the active route cannot handle may produce an error or silence. This is why an Android TV app can continue playing after a route change yet sound different, stop, or require the stream to be reopened.
The Android Open Source Project’s version notes are useful for developers and advanced users: Android 12 enabled new simultaneous-routing scenarios such as audio broadcasting and groups of BLE Audio headphones, while the described Android 12 behavior did not support routing multiple USB devices simultaneously. Android 14 can support multiple USB devices when they are different audio-device types and the kernel and vendor implementation support the arrangement. A consumer device may still hide or restrict those capabilities.

Why does one output stop working?
Most failures are compatibility rules, not a bad headset. Work through the source model, route and format in that order.
- Confirm the exact model. Read the manufacturer’s support page or built-in manual for the TV or phone model, not a similarly named device.
- Check both connections separately. Play audio through destination A alone and destination B alone. If one fails by itself, fix pairing, charging, volume or input selection before attempting dual output.
- Reopen the output selector. On a Galaxy phone, reconnect both devices and select them again in Quick settings > Media or Media output. On a TV, revisit the Sound Output or Bluetooth Speaker List menu.
- Look for an exclusive route. A headphone jack, HDMI receiver or Bluetooth mode may automatically mute the internal speakers. Sony documents this as a model-dependent limitation.
- Check the digital format. For an optical setup covered by Sony’s guidance, try PCM only when the model manual calls for it. An incompatible format can leave an external system silent.
- Disconnect and reconnect in a controlled order. Turn off both accessories, restart the source, connect the first device, then the second, and select both outputs. This can restore a stale route table.
- Test another app. If system sounds or a different media app work, the original app may not reopen its audio stream after a route change or may impose its own output policy.
If one destination becomes silent whenever the other connects, treat that as evidence of a documented routing restriction. A Bluetooth splitter or optical transmitter cannot override a TV that intentionally disables simultaneous output.
How should I choose an adapter or accessory?
Buy hardware only after the source device’s manual confirms the route you need. For a supported phone or TV Bluetooth feature, two compatible headphones or speakers are the simplest option. For a TV without native Bluetooth dual output, an optical Bluetooth transmitter can be useful only if the TV provides compatible optical output and permits the desired speaker-plus-external route.

Do not choose an adapter solely because it advertises “dual Bluetooth.” The transmitter may create two wireless links but still be incompatible with the TV’s optical format, audio timing or speaker-routing rules.

Independent volume control is a feature of the source implementation, not an automatic property of dual audio. Samsung’s Galaxy media panel can expose separate levels for the two selected devices. Supported Sony TV combinations may also provide separate headphone and speaker volume. Other devices offer one shared control, leaving each listener to adjust the accessory itself.
Two wireless destinations can buffer audio differently. The result may be a small timing difference between listeners or between TV speakers and headphones, even when both are receiving the same stream. The official guidance supplied for these features does not establish a universal latency value, so there is no single number that applies to all models. For lip-sync-sensitive viewing, use the TV’s audio-delay control if available and prefer the connection type recommended in the manual.
Sound format can also change when a second route is selected. A source may fall back to a format both destinations understand, or an app may reopen the stream with different channel capabilities. If surround sound disappears or playback becomes silent, inspect the active route’s supported format rather than assuming the headphones failed.

What are the safest steps before purchasing?
- Write down the source model and software or firmware version.
- Identify both intended destinations and whether they are Bluetooth, optical, HDMI, jack or USB.
- Search the source manufacturer’s manual for “dual audio,” “simultaneous output,” “multi-output,” “TV speakers and headphones” and the connection type.
- Verify the supported device count and whether volume can be controlled independently.
- Check digital-audio format requirements, especially for optical connections.
- Only then select headphones, speakers, a transmitter or another adapter.
This order prevents a common mistake: buying a capable accessory for a source that deliberately does not expose the required route.

Can a Bluetooth splitter force a TV to keep its speakers on?
No. A splitter can create two Bluetooth links only when it receives an audio signal, but it cannot override a television’s rule that mutes internal speakers when a jack, HDMI or Bluetooth output is active. Confirm simultaneous-output support first.
Why can an Android device support multiple USB audio types but still show no dual-output menu?
Android’s framework capability depends on the kernel and vendor implementation, and the manufacturer may not expose it in consumer settings. Android 14 documentation describes support for multiple USB devices of different audio types under those conditions; it is not a guarantee of a visible switch on every device.
Does selecting two outputs guarantee identical timing?
No. Each wireless or external path can buffer and process audio differently, so the streams may not be perfectly synchronized. The supplied manufacturer guidance does not define one universal delay value; use the source’s audio-delay controls or the connection recommended for that model if timing matters.
