To set up automatic Dropbox backups on Windows 11, install and sign in to the Dropbox desktop app, then open Dropbox icon → account menu → Preferences → Backups → Manage backups. Under Add a backup, choose your computer, select Let’s get started, choose the folders to protect, and click Set up. If your version offers the updated scheduler, choose 15 minutes, daily, weekly, or a custom interval.

Dropbox Backup copies selected folders from your computer to Dropbox while leaving the local files in place. It is not a full Windows system image, and it does not ordinarily cover other internal drives. Follow the setup below, then check the Backup area online and the sync-issues queue to confirm the result.

What should I check before setting up Dropbox Backup?

Before starting, confirm that Windows 11 is not running in S mode, the computer’s hard drive is formatted as NTFS, and the Dropbox desktop app is up to date. Dropbox lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 outside S mode as supported for the desktop app. You will also need an internet connection and enough available Dropbox storage for the folders you select.

  • Check storage: Compare the size of the folders you plan to protect with the available space on your Dropbox plan. If there is not enough room, the backup may not complete successfully. Think about the folders you actually intend to select, rather than assuming that the entire computer will be included.
  • Close files and applications: Dropbox recommends closing open files and apps before setup, particularly anything using folders you intend to back up. This can reduce access problems while the selected folders are being configured.
  • Check sync status: If Dropbox syncing is paused, resume it before configuring the backup. A paused sync can interfere with getting the selected contents uploaded, even if the folder choices are correct.
  • Consider other cloud backups: Dropbox recommends disabling other providers’ backups before setup to help prevent conflicts. Its updated Backup can also back up folders handled by services such as OneDrive, Google Drive, and iCloud, so overlapping folders and provider settings may affect what you choose.
  • Connect to the internet: Dropbox needs an internet connection to send backup contents to your account. If the PC is offline during setup or upload, it cannot transfer new changes until it reconnects and syncing resumes.
  • Check the location of important files: The ordinary computer backup covers selected folders from the computer’s home folder and ordinarily only the hard drive where the Dropbox desktop app is installed. Make a note of files kept on another internal drive so you do not mistake them for included content.

These are prerequisites and preparation steps, not a requirement to move your files into the Dropbox folder. Dropbox Backup is configured separately and leaves the original files in their existing local locations. The important distinction is that leaving files in place does not make every location on the PC eligible: the selection and drive scope still matter.

A short preflight check helps avoid a confusing partial result: verify Windows is supported, check the Dropbox app and storage, resume syncing, close applications that are using the intended folders, and decide which folders need protection. If you rely on another cloud provider for the same locations, review that arrangement before selecting overlapping content.

How do I turn on automatic backups in Windows 11?

Configure the backup from the Dropbox desktop app’s Preferences. The computer and folder choices determine what Dropbox copies; scheduling, when available in your version, determines how often changes are incorporated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Dropbox from the taskbar. Click the Dropbox icon in the Windows taskbar. If it is not visible, check the taskbar’s hidden-icons area. Confirm you are signed in to the Dropbox account that has the storage you intend to use.
  2. Open the backup settings. Select the account menu, choose Preferences, open the Backups tab, then select Manage backups. This is the documented settings path for starting or managing the computer backup.
  3. Start a computer backup. Under Add a backup, select the computer you are configuring and click Let’s get started. Make sure you are setting up the intended Windows computer if the account or interface lists more than one device.
  4. Choose folders. Select the folders to include. In the updated experience, Modify folder selection can be used to add other folders within the computer’s home folder. Review the list rather than relying on the label “computer backup” to imply that every file, drive, or program will be copied.
  5. Set the backup. Click Set up. If your updated interface presents an automatic schedule, choose the interval that fits your needs. If the option is not shown, complete the available setup without assuming a schedule control or interval is configurable in that version.

Dropbox’s exact screens can differ by version. The core path—Preferences → Backups → Manage backups—is the documented route, while the scheduler is available only in the updated experience. If you do not see a schedule control, do not assume a particular interval is configurable in your interface.

Folder selection is the step that defines what your cloud copy will contain. Prioritize the files and folders you would want available if the computer were lost or damaged, and check that those folders are within the locations Dropbox supports for this computer backup. If a key folder sits on a second internal drive, selecting the home-folder locations will not bring it into scope; that storage needs separate attention.

After selecting folders, take a moment to confirm your choices before finishing. The feature keeps the files in their local locations, so you do not need to reorganize them into Dropbox. Also note any provider-managed folders you select: the updated Backup can handle folders also used by OneDrive, Google Drive, or iCloud, but Dropbox advises disabling other providers’ backups before setup to help avoid conflicts.

How often can Dropbox Backup run?

In the updated Dropbox Backup experience, the documented schedule choices are 15 minutes (recommended), daily, weekly, or a custom interval. Choose 15 minutes when you want changes reflected more frequently; a daily or weekly schedule may suit folders that change less often or when you prefer less frequent backup activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dropbox’s overview also notes that behavior can vary by version: some backup syncs show changes immediately, while others integrate them every 15 minutes. Therefore, do not treat the schedule as a guarantee that every edit will appear online instantly. For work that needs close protection, save and close files normally, keep the computer online, and check the backup status rather than relying on an immediate cloud copy.

Schedule option When it may make sense What to keep in mind
15 minutes (recommended by Dropbox) Folders that change frequently and should be updated relatively often. Dropbox still says some changes can appear immediately and others may be integrated on a 15-minute cycle, depending on the version.
Daily Files that change less often, where a daily update is sufficient. Changes made after one backup cycle may not be reflected until a later one.
Weekly Folders that are updated infrequently. This is less frequent than the recommended 15-minute choice; consider whether that delay fits the importance of the files.
Custom interval When the available preset choices do not fit your preferred cadence. The allowed custom values are not specified here, so use the values shown in your Dropbox interface.

Choose an interval by weighing how often the selected folders change against how soon you want changes incorporated. For frequently updated work, a shorter interval makes the most sense among the documented choices. If the selected folders change only occasionally, daily or weekly may be more suitable. A custom interval gives another option when the presets do not fit, but the exact values depend on what your interface offers.

Whatever you select, keep the distinction between a schedule and an instant upload in mind. The overview describes different behavior across versions, and an offline or paused computer cannot send changes while it is disconnected or stopped. Reconnect the computer, resume syncing if needed, and verify the result through the Backup area and sync issues rather than relying only on the chosen interval.

How can I confirm that the backup is working?

Check both the backup’s online contents and Dropbox’s local sync status. A computer backup is available from the Backup area online; failed items can appear in the sync error queue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Allow Dropbox to process the selected folders while the computer is connected to the internet. Keep the app syncing rather than paused so it can transfer the contents.
  2. Open Dropbox’s Backup area online and check that the computer backup and expected folders are listed. Check the actual folder names you intended to protect, not only whether the computer itself appears.
  3. In Windows, click the Dropbox taskbar icon and open View sync issues to check for files that failed to back up. The error queue is useful when a folder appears selected but some items are missing.
  4. If an expected file is missing, check that its folder was selected, Dropbox has sufficient storage, syncing is not paused, and the file is not blocked by an open application or permissions issue.

Backups are not downloaded into the local Dropbox folder. To inspect backed-up files, use Dropbox’s Backup interface online rather than looking for a second local copy inside the Dropbox folder.

Verification is more than seeing a computer listed. Match the online Backup view to the folders you selected, then look at View sync issues for failures that need attention. If you made a change recently, remember that the version and schedule affect when it appears; do not assume it must be visible instantly.

If a file is absent, work through the likely explanations in order: confirm the parent folder is selected, confirm the computer is online and syncing, check available Dropbox storage, and look for a listed sync error. Then consider whether the file is on a different internal drive or inside a folder affected by permissions or another cloud provider. This separates a scope issue from an upload problem.

Which files and drives does a computer backup include?

A Dropbox computer backup covers the folders you select from the computer’s home folder. It ordinarily covers only the hard drive where the Dropbox desktop app is installed; other internal drives are not included in that computer backup and need separate attention.

This scope matters if you keep documents, photos, or work projects on another internal drive. Selecting folders from the home folder does not turn Dropbox Backup into whole-computer protection: it does not create a full system image of Windows, installed programs, or every drive. Review the selected-folder list before relying on the backup, especially if important files are stored outside the home folder or on a different drive.

An external drive is optional for computer-folder backup. If you want to back up an external drive, Dropbox lists NTFS, exFAT, and FAT32 as supported formats on Windows. Confirm the drive’s format and whether it is connected when needed; an external drive is not a prerequisite for enabling the ordinary computer-folder backup.

Think of this as a scope check rather than a general label. “Computer backup” does not mean every file system location on the PC is automatically covered. The selected folders and the drive where Dropbox is installed define the ordinary computer-backup coverage. Keep a separate list of important content on other internal drives and plan for that data separately.

The external-drive option is also distinct from the standard selected-folder setup. You do not need to attach an external drive just to protect home-folder content from the computer’s installed drive. If external media is what you want to back up, check its format against the Windows formats Dropbox lists—NTFS, exFAT, or FAT32—and make sure you understand that it is an additional need, not an automatic part of the computer backup.

What happens to the local files, and can deleted files be recovered?

Dropbox Backup copies selected files to Dropbox but leaves the local files in place. That does not mean the two locations are independent archives: deletion can propagate between the local and cloud locations, so deleting a file should not be treated as a reliable way to preserve a separate cloud copy.

Dropbox states that deleted-file recovery lasts 30 or 180 days, depending on the plan. The applicable recovery window is plan-dependent; check the terms for your account rather than assuming every plan has the longer period. Backup should not be treated as a permanent archive or as a substitute for checking that a needed file is present and recoverable.

There are two separate points to remember: Dropbox leaves the original files where they are, but the cloud copy is not necessarily insulated from later deletion. If you delete something locally, deletion can propagate to the Dropbox location. Do not interpret “backup” as a guarantee that a deleted item will remain stored indefinitely.

The recovery period is also a plan setting, not a universal duration. Dropbox gives 30 or 180 days depending on the plan. If recovery time matters to your workflow, confirm the period that applies to your account and treat it as a limited recovery window. It does not replace checking that your selected folders were backed up successfully.

What should I do if setup fails or folders are missing?

Start with the usual causes—storage, sync state, file access, and folder selection—before removing or moving files. Dropbox’s troubleshooting guidance includes closing apps using the folders, checking permissions, restoring folders to their default locations when applicable, and removing overlapping cloud-provider folders from selected locations.

  • Setup will not complete: Confirm the computer has internet access, Dropbox syncing is resumed, and the account has enough available storage. Close applications that may be using files in the selected folders and try again.
  • A folder cannot be accessed: Check the folder’s permissions. If a known folder has been moved from its default location, Dropbox advises restoring it to the default location when applicable.
  • Some files are absent: Reopen Manage backups and review the folder selection. Then check View sync issues from the Dropbox taskbar menu for failed items.
  • Cloud-provider folders cause problems: Dropbox recommends disabling other providers’ backups before setup to help prevent conflicts. Its updated experience can handle some folders also managed by OneDrive, Google Drive, or iCloud, but overlapping provider folders may need to be removed from the selected locations.
  • Files are on another drive: Remember that the computer backup ordinarily covers the drive where Dropbox is installed, not other internal drives. A missing folder on a second drive may be outside this backup’s scope.
  • Dropbox appears paused: Resume syncing and give the app an internet connection. A correct folder selection cannot upload its contents while syncing is paused or the computer is offline.
  • The app is using selected files: Close the relevant program or file, then retry the setup or let Dropbox process the folder again. Dropbox specifically recommends closing applications that are using the folders.
  • A known folder was moved: When applicable, restore the folder to its default location as Dropbox advises. Before changing locations, confirm which folder is missing and whether it is within the computer backup’s supported scope.

After correcting the issue, check the online Backup area again and revisit the sync-issues queue. Seeing the computer listed is useful, but verifying the expected folders and resolving failed items gives a clearer picture of what is actually protected.

Use the error queue to focus follow-up work: if it identifies failed items, address the specific file or access problem; if no error is visible, revisit the selected folders, account storage, and drive location. A folder on a drive outside the ordinary computer-backup scope will not be fixed by repeatedly restarting setup. Likewise, an item that cannot be accessed may need its application closed or its permissions checked.

Is Dropbox Backup a full backup of Windows 11?

No. Dropbox Backup is a cloud copy of selected folders, not a full system image. It does not document backing up Windows itself, installed applications, or other internal drives as part of the computer backup, so it should not be relied on alone to restore a computer to its complete previous state after a drive failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of the feature as protection for selected files and folders. If you need recovery of the entire Windows installation or files on additional drives, you will need a separate backup approach designed for that purpose.

That distinction also helps set expectations during setup. The feature’s purpose here is to copy the folders you choose to Dropbox, not to preserve every setting and application required to recreate the PC. For complete-computer recovery, account for the Windows installation and any other drives using a separate method rather than assuming they are part of the Dropbox selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dropbox Backup upload files if my Windows 11 PC is asleep?

Dropbox requires an internet connection to sync backup contents, so a sleeping or offline computer cannot send new changes during that time. The changes can be incorporated after the computer wakes, reconnects, and Dropbox resumes syncing; timing depends on the schedule and version.

Can I use Dropbox Backup if my Windows 11 PC is in S mode?

Dropbox lists Windows 11 outside S mode as supported for its desktop app. If the computer is in S mode, it does not meet the stated desktop-app requirement for this setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Dropbox Backup create a second copy inside my Dropbox folder?

No. The backed-up files are viewed through Dropbox’s Backup area online rather than as a duplicate folder inside the local Dropbox folder. The original selected files remain in their local locations.

What file systems does Dropbox list for an external drive on Windows?

Dropbox lists NTFS, exFAT, and FAT32 for supported external drives on Windows. External storage is optional for setting up the computer’s selected home-folder backup.

How often can Dropbox Backup run on Windows 11?

In the updated Dropbox Backup experience, the documented choices are 15 minutes (recommended), daily, weekly, or a custom interval. The scheduler may not appear in every version, and Dropbox notes that changes can appear immediately or be integrated every 15 minutes depending on the version.

Does Dropbox Backup include every drive in my Windows 11 PC?

No. A computer backup covers selected folders from the computer’s home folder and ordinarily only the drive where the Dropbox desktop app is installed. Other internal drives need separate attention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long can I recover deleted files from Dropbox Backup?

Dropbox states that the deleted-file recovery window is 30 or 180 days, depending on your plan. Check the terms for your account; the longer period does not apply to every plan.

Why are some files missing from my Dropbox Backup?

Check that the folder was selected, Dropbox has enough storage, syncing is not paused, and the computer is online. Then use View sync issues from the taskbar menu to look for failed items. Files on another internal drive may be outside the ordinary computer backup’s scope.

The Bottom Line

Use Preferences → Backups → Manage backups to select the folders you want, choose a schedule if your updated interface offers one, and verify the contents online. Dropbox Backup protects selected files and folders—not a full Windows system or every drive—so check the scope, storage, and sync issues before relying on it.
