To manage Dropbox Backup on Windows 11, select the Dropbox icon in the taskbar, open the account menu, choose Preferences → Backups → Manage backups. From there, you can inspect backed-up folders and status, change the selection, review deleted files, or delete a backup. The controls vary depending on whether your account uses Dropbox’s legacy or updated Backup experience, so check the labels shown in your own app.
Where are Dropbox Backup settings in Windows 11?
Open the Dropbox desktop app’s taskbar menu and select Preferences → Backups → Manage backups. The Dropbox app supports Windows 11, except Windows in S mode. The menu lets you reach settings for the computer or an external drive connected to it.

If you do not see the same controls described here, your account may be using a different Backup experience. Dropbox’s management instructions, updated May 10, 2024, and migration instructions, updated October 7, 2024, describe different controls and capabilities. Use the labels and status in your own app rather than assuming every account has the same options.
What should I check before setting up or changing Backup?
Dropbox’s setup guidance, updated July 30, 2025, identifies several prerequisites. Install the Dropbox desktop app on the Windows 11 computer, make sure the computer can reach the internet, and confirm that your Dropbox plan has enough unused storage for the folders you intend to protect. Syncing must be active rather than paused. If syncing is paused, resume it before judging whether the backup is current.

Also decide whether you are protecting the computer’s main drive, an external drive, or both. A computer backup and an external-drive backup are separate selections. Review the folders already covered and any selective-sync exclusions before adding more data. This preparation matters because a folder omitted during setup is not protected merely because the Dropbox icon is visible in the taskbar.
- Desktop app: Required for the normal Windows management and deletion workflows.
- Internet access: Needed to send changes to Dropbox and to retrieve backup content.
- Available quota: The backup must fit within your Dropbox storage.
- Active syncing: Paused syncing can make a healthy backup appear stale.
- Stable folder layout: Do not move, delete, or rename selected top-level folders during setup or ongoing use.
How can I tell whether Dropbox is backing up my files?
In Manage backups, check which folders are selected and read the status shown for the backup. Do not assume that seeing Dropbox running means every file you expect is covered: folder selection, selective sync, storage availability, and sync issues can all affect what is backed up.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Confirm folder selection: Make sure the folders you want protected are included in the backup.
- Check selective sync: Dropbox says folders unchecked in selective sync will not be backed up. Review that setting before updating to the newer Backup experience.
- Read the status: Dropbox says some backup changes appear instantly, while others are integrated every 15 minutes. Check the status in your account instead of expecting every change to appear immediately.
- Inspect sync issues: If files fail to back up, Dropbox directs users to the sync issues queue to see which items need attention.
- Check syncing and capacity: Paused syncing needs to be resumed, and the Dropbox plan needs enough available storage for the backup.
A status that says the backup is current is more useful than the mere presence of the Dropbox process. When you add a large folder, allow time for the displayed status to change and look for any item-level errors. If a change is urgent, verify it in Dropbox’s web Backup view rather than relying on the Windows folder alone.
How do I change which folders Dropbox backs up?
Open Dropbox taskbar icon → account menu → Preferences → Backups → Manage backups, then review the available folder-selection controls for your Backup experience. Select the folders you want included and verify the resulting selection and status in the management view.
The updated Backup experience allows selection of more folders within the computer’s home folder than the legacy experience. Before migrating, review selective sync: Dropbox says folders unchecked there will not be backed up. Dropbox also says online-only files are downloaded to the computer’s hard drive when updating to the updated Backup experience. The update cannot be rolled back, so check both the folder selection and the online-only-file effect before confirming it.
Avoid moving, deleting, or renaming the top-level folders selected for backup. Dropbox warns these changes can stop the backup. If your folder layout needs to change, first check the backup status and Dropbox’s current guidance for your interface rather than assuming the backup will follow the renamed or relocated folder.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After changing the selection, keep the computer online and watch the status until the initial scan and upload are complete. A folder can be selected while its contents are still being processed. Check the sync issues queue if particular files remain absent, and check available quota if the selection is rejected or the upload stops.
Can I schedule Dropbox Backup on Windows 11?
Dropbox’s updated Backup supports scheduled automatic backups. The available schedule choices documented in Dropbox’s overview, updated July 7, 2026, are 15-minute, daily, weekly, and custom; Dropbox describes the 15-minute interval as recommended.
To configure a schedule, open the Backup controls in the desktop app and use the scheduling option if it is available in your account. Because Dropbox’s legacy and updated experiences do not expose identical controls, the exact label or availability may differ. A schedule does not mean every change is necessarily reflected instantly: Dropbox documents different sync timing across Backup experiences, so check the status displayed for your own backup.

Choose the interval according to how quickly you need a recoverable copy. A 15-minute schedule is the documented recommended choice when frequent protection matters; daily or weekly schedules may be appropriate for less frequently changing material. Custom scheduling gives you a way to fit backup activity around your normal use, but the schedule does not override a paused sync, an offline computer, a full quota, or a file in the sync-issues queue.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What is the difference between legacy and updated Dropbox Backup?
The updated experience expands folder selection within the computer’s home folder and adds scheduled automatic backups. The legacy interface describes some additional management controls that Dropbox says are unavailable in the updated experience.
| Control or behavior | Legacy Backup | Updated Backup |
|---|---|---|
| Select more folders within the computer’s home folder | Not described as an updated capability | Supported |
| Scheduled automatic backups | Not described as an updated capability | Supported: 15-minute, daily, weekly, or custom schedules |
| History, skip-file, and Rewind controls | Described in the legacy interface | Dropbox says some of these controls are unavailable |
| Migration can be rolled back | Not applicable | Dropbox says the update cannot be rolled back |
These are differences documented by Dropbox, not a guarantee that every user sees identical labels or options. Check the actual Backup view in your account before updating or relying on a particular control.
Before accepting an update, make a note of the folders currently selected, review selective-sync exclusions, and check local disk space. Online-only files are downloaded during the update, which can temporarily or permanently increase local storage use. Once the updated experience is installed, Dropbox says the change cannot be reversed through a rollback option.
What does Dropbox Backup include, and where do I find it?
Dropbox Backup stores a cloud copy while leaving the source files on the computer or external drive. Backed-up content is accessed through Dropbox’s Backup view on the web; Dropbox says it does not appear as a downloaded backup folder in Windows File Explorer. Backup is one-way protection, not a shared workspace for editing backed-up content.
For a computer backup, Dropbox says the covered files and folders are on the hard drive where the desktop app is installed. Other installed internal drives are not included as part of that computer backup. An external drive can be backed up separately. Dropbox lists NTFS, exFAT, and FAT32 as supported Windows external-drive formats.
An external drive is optional for managing a computer backup. It is a separate source you can choose to back up if you want Dropbox protection for files stored on that drive as well. If you do use one, keep it connected while its backup is running and avoid changing its drive letter or top-level folder structure without checking the backup status.
This arrangement is different from ordinary Dropbox folder synchronization. A synced folder is intended for ongoing access and collaboration, while Backup protects selected source folders in a one-way cloud copy. Do not expect a backup to appear as a normal mirrored folder that you can edit from the web and have those edits flow back to Windows.
How do I delete or stop a Dropbox backup?
To delete a computer or external-drive backup while you have access to the device, Dropbox’s documented route is desktop app → Preferences → Backups → Manage backups → Delete backup. Read the confirmation details carefully before proceeding. Deleting a backup is not the same instruction as deleting the source files on your computer or drive.

Dropbox says the desktop app is required for this deletion flow. If you no longer have access to the device, Dropbox lists unlinking the device as an option. The exact effect and available choices depend on the confirmation screen, so verify what will be removed before you confirm.
If your goal is to stop future protection rather than remove an existing cloud backup, inspect the controls in Manage backups and follow the option available for your Backup experience. Do not move or rename the selected top-level folders as a substitute: Dropbox warns that doing so can stop the backup, but it is not a controlled way to manage or delete one.
Deleting the cloud backup does not give you permission to assume that local files are deleted, and deleting local source files is not a safe substitute for using the documented backup controls. Read every confirmation screen for the specific computer or external drive and the data it names. If you may need the files later, download or restore them first and check that the restored copy opens correctly.
How do I restore files from Dropbox Backup?
Dropbox documents two routes: restore an entire computer backup to a new computer, or download selected folders from the web Backup view. The desktop Backup view also provides a workflow to show and restore deleted folders.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRestore a full computer backup to a new computer
- Install the Dropbox desktop app on the new computer.
- Sign in to the Dropbox account that owns the backup.
- When Dropbox offers the computer backup, confirm that backup to begin restoring it.
- Leave the app connected to the internet and allow the transfer to finish before judging whether the restoration is complete.
Download selected folders from the web
- Go to dropbox.com and open Backup.
- Choose Mac or PC, then select the folders you need.
- Download the selected folders to a suitable location.
- Open a few restored files and compare their names and dates with what you expected before deleting any remaining copy.
Recover a deleted folder
In the desktop Backup view, use the option to show deleted folders, then follow the restore workflow for the folder you need. A deleted folder may be listed separately from currently selected folders, so inspect the deleted-items view rather than assuming it will reappear in File Explorer. Check the account’s recovery window promptly; the time a deleted item remains recoverable depends on the Dropbox plan and applicable data policies.
If you are restoring to a replacement computer, do not erase the old computer or disconnect its external drive until you have confirmed that the cloud copy contains the required folders. A restore is a recovery operation, not proof that every excluded, skipped, or failed file was captured.
How long can I recover deleted Dropbox files?
Dropbox’s file-recovery page, updated September 25, 2026, lists standard deleted-file recovery periods by plan. These are plan-specific standard periods, not a guarantee that every file will remain recoverable for the full duration.
| Dropbox plan | Standard recovery period listed by Dropbox |
|---|---|
| Basic, Plus, Family | 30 days |
| Professional, Essentials, Standard, Business | 180 days |
| Advanced, Business Plus, Enterprise, Education | 365 days |
Dropbox notes that add-ons can extend retention, while data disposition policies may cause permanent deletion sooner. If you need a file, start recovery as soon as possible rather than treating the listed plan period as guaranteed availability.
Recommended Free Tools
The period applies to the account and plan conditions Dropbox lists, not to a promise that every deleted item remains recoverable until the final day. Business or education accounts may also be subject to administrative data-disposition rules. For that reason, treat an accidental deletion as urgent: identify the correct account, open the Backup or recovery view, and begin the restore while the item is still listed.

Why might a Dropbox backup be missing files?
First check whether the folder is selected and whether selective sync excludes it. Then check the backup status, sync issues queue, available Dropbox storage, internet connection, and whether syncing is paused. These checks address the most common causes identified in Dropbox’s management and setup guidance.
- A folder is absent: Review folder selection and selective sync; unchecked selective-sync folders are not backed up.
- Changes have not appeared: Read the status. Dropbox documents that some changes are immediate and others can take up to the 15-minute integration interval.
- Files show sync errors: Inspect the sync issues queue for the affected items.
- The backup stopped after a folder change: Dropbox warns against moving, renaming, or deleting selected top-level folders.
- The backup cannot fit: Check available plan storage before retrying the setup or adding more folders.
- The computer was offline: Reconnect it and allow Dropbox to complete its pending work before checking the web Backup view.
- An external drive is missing: Reconnect the drive and confirm that it uses NTFS, exFAT, or FAT32 on Windows and that its separate backup is still listed.
If the problem persists, record the exact folder path, the status message, and any item named in the sync-issues queue. Those details distinguish an excluded folder from a failed upload and help prevent accidental deletion or a premature reconfiguration.

Dropbox describes Backup as a cloud copy and notes that external drives can be backed up separately. If you want a copy that remains outside your Dropbox account, that is a different protection goal; Dropbox Backup does not create a second local backup by itself.
Will updating to the new Dropbox Backup download online-only files?
Yes. Dropbox says online-only files are downloaded to the computer’s hard drive when updating to the updated Backup experience. Review this impact before confirming the update, particularly if local disk space is limited.
Can I edit files directly in Dropbox Backup like a shared folder?
No. Dropbox describes Backup as one-way protection rather than a shared workspace for editing backed-up content. Access backed-up content through the Backup view and work with the original files on the computer.
Where are my Dropbox backups in File Explorer?
They are not presented as a downloaded backup folder in File Explorer. Dropbox directs users to the Backup view on dropbox.com, or to the desktop Backup workflow when restoring an entire computer backup.

Does computer Backup include every drive installed in my PC?
No. Dropbox says computer Backup covers files and folders on the hard drive where the desktop app is installed. Other installed drives are not included in that computer backup; an external drive can be selected as a separate backup source.
Do I need to buy an external hard drive to use Dropbox Backup?
No. An external drive is optional. Dropbox Backup can protect selected folders on the computer’s covered hard drive, while compatible external drives can be added separately if you want another source protected.

What happens if I rename a folder that is being backed up?
Dropbox warns against moving, deleting, or renaming selected top-level folders because those actions can stop the backup. Use the controls in Manage backups and check the status instead of treating a rename as a safe way to reorganize coverage.
Can I undo the move to updated Dropbox Backup?
Dropbox says the update to the updated Backup experience cannot be rolled back. Review selective sync, folder selection, online-only files, and local disk capacity before confirming the migration.
How quickly will a new file appear in my backup?
Timing depends on the Backup experience and account status. Dropbox says some changes appear instantly while others are integrated every 15 minutes. Check the status in your account rather than assuming every change is immediate.
What should I do if a backup will not fit in my Dropbox storage?
Check the available quota, reduce the selected folders if appropriate, or review whether your plan provides enough storage. Dropbox lists sufficient plan storage as a setup requirement; do not assume a failed upload is a folder-selection problem until quota is checked.
Can I delete a backup without deleting the files on my PC?
Use the documented Delete backup control and read its confirmation details carefully. Dropbox distinguishes deleting a backup from deleting source files, so verify exactly what the confirmation screen says before proceeding.
How do I restore only one folder?
Open dropbox.com, choose Backup, select Mac or PC, choose the required folder, and download it. For a deleted folder, use the desktop Backup view’s option to show deleted folders and follow its restore workflow.
What are Dropbox’s standard deleted-file recovery periods?
Dropbox lists 30 days for Basic, Plus, and Family; 180 days for Professional, Essentials, Standard, and Business; and 365 days for Advanced, Business Plus, Enterprise, and Education. Add-ons may extend retention, while data-disposition policies may shorten it.
The Bottom Line
Manage Dropbox Backup from the Windows 11 taskbar app at Preferences → Backups → Manage backups. Verify folder selection, selective-sync exclusions, status, quota, and schedule; treat legacy and updated controls differently; and use Dropbox’s web Backup view to restore files before your plan’s recovery window expires.
