Play the Dragon Age series in this order: Dragon Age: Origins → Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening (optional) → Dragon Age II → Dragon Age: Inquisition → Inquisition – Trespasser → Dragon Age: The Veilguard. For the shortest main-game route, skip Awakening; for the strongest narrative handoff into the latest game, finish Trespasser immediately before The Veilguard.
This is the best whole-game order, not a mission-by-mission reconstruction of the fictional calendar. Origins and Dragon Age II overlap in-world, but switching between their campaigns creates more confusion than insight. BioWare describes each Dragon Age game as a standalone story, so you can begin with The Veilguard if necessary, although the earlier route supplies substantially more context for its characters, factions and Solas storyline.

What order should I play the Dragon Age games in?
The practical sequence is:
- Dragon Age: Origins
- Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening, if you want its additional Grey Warden campaign
- Dragon Age II
- Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Inquisition – Trespasser, after finishing Inquisition’s main story
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard
If you only want the four principal games, play Origins, Dragon Age II, Inquisition and The Veilguard. Add Awakening after Origins and Trespasser after Inquisition for the fuller route.
Why is whole-game order better than following the fictional timeline?
Do not alternate missions between Origins and Dragon Age II. BioWare’s Dragon Age II story recap places the first two games broadly during and after the Fifth Blight, but they cover different lengths of time. Dragon Age II spans ten fictional years, while Origins and Awakening cover a shorter period. The overlap is therefore real, but it does not create a useful chapter-by-chapter play order.

Playing one complete campaign at a time preserves each game’s character arcs, political context and gameplay systems. The recommended sequence also follows how the series’ major revelations were delivered: the Grey Warden crisis, Hawke’s rise in Kirkwall, the Inquisition’s response to a world-shaking breach, and finally Rook’s fight against threats connected to Solas and Tevinter.
BioWare also makes clear that there is no single canon Origins ending that every player must reproduce. Your choices are part of your personal continuity, not a puzzle with one officially correct solution. A world-state tool can represent selected decisions for Inquisition, but that does not turn the series into one fixed timeline.

1. Dragon Age: Origins
Origins is the correct starting point for a first full-series playthrough. You create a Grey Warden and confront the Fifth Blight, while the opening origin you choose establishes your character’s social background and gives the setting its first major personal stakes.
Because the game supports multiple origins and substantially different choices, two players can finish it with different allies, rulers and outcomes. That variation is intentional. Do not restart repeatedly to chase a supposed canonical result; choose the origin and decisions that make your playthrough coherent.
On PC, EA has listed an Ultimate Edition that was distributed on physical media requiring a DVD drive. A listing date shown on a current product page is not the original release date. If you buy an older boxed copy, verify the exact platform, whether a serial code is included, and whether that code has already been redeemed before relying on it.
2. Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening
Awakening follows Origins and continues the Grey Warden story with your character serving as a Warden-Commander. It is optional for understanding the four headline games, but it is the natural next stop if you want the most complete account of the Wardens and the consequences of the Fifth Blight.
Play it after the main Origins campaign rather than inserting it during the Blight. BioWare explicitly places the expansion after Origins. Its announced historical release date was March 16, 2010; that date is useful context, not a statement about current availability or sales.
If you are trying to reach Inquisition quickly, skip Awakening and read a recap instead. If you value continuity and plan to spend time with the Grey Warden’s later role, include it.

3. Dragon Age II
Dragon Age II is next. You play Hawke, a refugee who eventually becomes the Champion of Kirkwall. The story is framed over a decade, so it naturally overlaps the period covered by Origins and extends well beyond it.
The overlap does not mean you should pause Origins at a particular quest, switch to Hawke for a year, then return. Complete Origins (and Awakening, if included) first, then play Hawke’s entire campaign. This keeps the game’s time jumps and retrospective narration understandable.
Choices from Origins can be referenced in Dragon Age II, but the game remains playable as Hawke’s own story. Do not treat it as an expansion to the Warden’s campaign; its protagonist, setting and central conflict are different.
4. Dragon Age: Inquisition
Play Inquisition after completing Dragon Age II. You become the Inquisitor and lead an organisation attempting to contain a crisis that affects Thedas. This is the point in the series where constructing an earlier world state is especially useful.
Before starting a new Inquisition game, use Dragon Age Keep if it is available to you. Keep was designed to let players configure important decisions from earlier games and apply that world state when beginning Inquisition, even when old save files are missing. A BioWare account from 2014 described it as a free web application and said it represented more than 300 decisions at that time; that historical feature description is not a guarantee that the service, every option or every login path remains unchanged in 2026.
Keep is not a replacement for playing the earlier games. It changes the background state that Inquisition reads; it does not recreate the Warden or Hawke campaigns.

5. Inquisition – Trespasser
Finish Inquisition’s main story before starting Trespasser. In a story-focused route, place Trespasser immediately before The Veilguard. It is the clearest publisher-documented bridge between the two games.
BioWare’s launch letter for The Veilguard connects the end of Trespasser to the later direction of the series, including Tevinter and Solas. Creative director John Epler described the decision this way: When we stabbed that map at the end of Trespasser, we knew we were going to Tevinter.
That is why skipping the expansion can make the opening context of The Veilguard feel abrupt.

Treat Trespasser as an endgame expansion, not as another region to visit whenever you like. An EA forum reply warns that starting it closes off unfinished side quests. Finish companion quests, exploration and other optional work you care about before launching it, then make a separate save so you can return to the completed Inquisition world if needed. This is a practical caution from an EA forum response, not a claim of independent testing.
6. Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The Veilguard is the latest main game. You play Rook and recruit a group of seven companions. EA released it on October 31, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
BioWare calls each Dragon Age game a standalone story, so The Veilguard is a defensible entry point if you cannot access the older titles. You will understand the immediate plot, but the earlier route gives more meaning to returning lore, the Inquisitor’s role and the consequences surrounding Solas.
Do not expect the Deluxe Edition’s cosmetic extras to function as another campaign. They add appearance items rather than a separate main story. If you begin with The Veilguard, treat it as a new protagonist’s adventure, not as a save-file continuation of your Warden or Hawke.
Should I play Awakening and Trespasser?
Awakening is optional; Trespasser is the more important add-on for a Veilguard-bound playthrough. Both are worthwhile, but they serve different purposes.
| Content | Include it when… | Skip it when… |
|---|---|---|
| Awakening | You want an additional post-Blight Grey Warden story and a fuller account of the Commander’s role. | You want to move from Origins to Dragon Age II quickly. |
| Trespasser | You want the clearest narrative preparation for Tevinter, Solas and The Veilguard. | You are stopping after Inquisition or only need the main campaign. |
Other downloadable content is not identified in the available evidence as mandatory for understanding the main order. Add it for personal interest, not because a checklist says every piece is required.

The transfer path changes between games. Keep supports an Inquisition world state; The Veilguard does not directly import that Keep file or your old save.
Origins and Dragon Age II to Inquisition
Dragon Age Keep lets you select earlier outcomes and create a world state for Inquisition. This is useful if your original saves are unavailable or you are changing platforms. Configure the state before launching a new Inquisition playthrough and review it carefully; the tool is a way to specify choices, not proof that every minor action from an old save will appear.

Keep’s published feature description dates from 2014. Check that the current service accepts your account and exposes the choices you need before building your route around it.
Inquisition to The Veilguard
An EA community manager says The Veilguard does not integrate with Keep and does not directly import earlier saves or choices. Instead, its character-creation flow asks you to recreate the Inquisitor and select certain Inquisition decisions. You therefore need to remember or record the choices you want to represent.

Keep does not transfer all decisions from Origins, Dragon Age II and Inquisition into The Veilguard with one click.
Do I need to play Origins before The Veilguard?
No, but it is the best route for context. BioWare explicitly describes the games as standalone stories, which makes a Veilguard-first playthrough reasonable for newcomers who only have current-generation hardware or limited time.
Starting with The Veilguard means you will meet Rook and the seven companions without the older games’ systems or campaigns. You will also encounter references whose emotional weight is greater after Inquisition and Trespasser. If you have time for only one earlier game, choose Inquisition; if you want the intended long arc, start with Origins and include Trespasser before moving on.
What is the fastest complete route?
For a concise but coherent run, play the four main games in order: Origins, Dragon Age II, Inquisition and The Veilguard. Add Trespasser even on a shortened route because it supplies the most direct setup for the latest game. Add Awakening only if the Grey Warden thread is a priority.
- Finish the main Origins campaign.
- Play Awakening or skip it.
- Complete all of Dragon Age II.
- Configure Dragon Age Keep, if available and useful, before starting Inquisition.
- Finish Inquisition’s main story and desired side content.
- Make a backup save before launching Trespasser.
- Complete Trespasser, then begin The Veilguard.
What should I check before buying or installing the games?
There is no single platform that should be assumed to run every entry in the same form. EA lists different store and edition routes for the older games, while the launch announcement for The Veilguard specifies PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Confirm the edition, operating-system support, storefront and account requirements for each title before purchasing.
- Older physical PC copies: check for the required DVD drive, an unused serial code and any account activation requirement.
- Console plans: verify backward compatibility and the exact edition available for your console generation.
- Digital purchases: confirm which storefront owns the license and whether the listed edition contains the expansion you expect.
- Veilguard extras: cosmetic Deluxe content is not an additional story campaign.
- Keep-dependent plans: verify that Keep is currently operating and that you can sign in before relying on it for Inquisition.
Physical collectibles are separate from the games. EA described a launch-era Rook’s Coffer containing keepsakes such as a light-up Lyrium Dagger and cards, and explicitly stated that the game was not included. Treat any current listing, stock status or price as something to verify independently.

What common ordering mistakes should I avoid?
- Interleaving the first two games: their fictional dates overlap, but whole-game order is clearer and matches the way the stories were designed to unfold.
- Starting Trespasser too early: it is an endgame expansion and can close unfinished Inquisition activities.
- Assuming Keep is a Veilguard importer: it is for constructing an Inquisition world state, not for automatic four-game transfer.
- Hunting for one canon Origins ending: BioWare does not identify a single proper ending that overrides player choice.
- Treating storefront dates as original release dates: current EA pages can show later edition-listing dates, which are not reliable evidence of the original launch.
- Assuming every DLC is required: Awakening and Trespasser have different value, and the evidence does not make every other add-on mandatory.
How we picked this order
The sequence prioritizes the publisher-supported narrative links, the protagonists’ progression and a practical playthrough that avoids mission-by-mission switching. It places Awakening after Origins because BioWare explicitly does so, and places Trespasser immediately before The Veilguard because BioWare directly connects its ending with the later Tevinter and Solas direction. It also separates the two continuity systems: Keep helps establish an Inquisition world state, while The Veilguard uses selected recreated choices instead of a Keep import.
Frequently asked questions
Can I skip Dragon Age II and still understand Inquisition?
You can follow Inquisition without playing every earlier campaign because each game is designed as a standalone story. Skipping Dragon Age II removes context about Hawke, Kirkwall and the decade-long events that help explain the political situation inherited by Inquisition.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Dragon Age Keep automatically preserve my choices in The Veilguard?
No. Keep was built to configure the world state for Inquisition; The Veilguard does not directly import Keep or earlier save files. Its setup instead asks you to recreate the Inquisitor and choose selected prior decisions.
What should I do if I start Trespasser and still have unfinished quests?
Keep a separate save before launching the expansion. An EA forum reply warns that starting Trespasser closes unfinished side activities, so complete anything you consider important first or return to the earlier save.
Is an old Origins Ultimate Edition DVD enough to play on a modern PC?
Not necessarily. The packaged PC edition requires a DVD drive, and older copies can involve serial codes and account activation; inspect the exact listing and code status before buying. Current operating-system and storefront compatibility should also be confirmed separately.
Can one console run every Dragon Age game in this order?
Do not assume so. The games have different store and edition routes, while EA specifically lists The Veilguard for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Check each installment’s current platform support and backward-compatibility status before choosing a single-device plan.
