Mixed Dow Jones futures signals call for a checklist, not a snap trade. Microsoft and Alphabet (Google) report after the close on October 28, 2026, followed by Amazon on October 29. The key question is whether cloud and artificial-intelligence demand is becoming durable profit and free cash flow quickly enough to justify another large increase in infrastructure spending. Investors should compare cloud growth and margins, evidence of AI monetization, capital-expenditure guidance, contractual commitments, cash conversion and company-specific demand signals, while keeping Treasury yields, Federal Reserve policy, inflation and oil in the scenario set. Those factors can produce a negative share-price reaction even when headline revenue beats expectations.

What do Dow Jones futures signal before the earnings reports?

Index futures reflect changing expectations for earnings, interest rates and risk appetite; they are not a reliable forecast of where the cash market will finish. Schwab described the setup as solid but uneven, with persistent inflation, rising Treasury yields, geopolitical tension, possible additional rate hikes, record technology capital expenditure and pressure on free cash flow. Reuters characterized the week as a test for an already shaky AI-led rally, with investors focused on spending guidance and the returns generated by that spending.

Kiplinger’s October 26 market recap recorded WTI crude at $101.48 per barrel after a more than 12% October rise. It also reported the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 52,361, the S&P 500 at 7,676 and the Nasdaq Composite at 26,169. Those figures are a dated market snapshot, not a forecast or a current futures quote.

Schwab, citing FactSet, put expected 2026 year-over-year earnings growth for the equally weighted Magnificent Seven at 33%, versus 65.1% for the S&P 500 information-technology sector. That gap helps explain why a strong technology report may still disappoint investors who expect an unusually high payoff from AI spending.

What are Microsoft, Google and Amazon expected to report?

Schwab’s October 20 consensus estimates were subject to change before the releases. Alphabet and Microsoft were scheduled for October 28 after the close, while Amazon was scheduled for October 29 after the close. Microsoft Investor Relations lists the October 28 release as its fiscal 2027 first-quarter earnings announcement.

Company Expected EPS Expected revenue Expected year-over-year revenue growth Scheduled release
Alphabet (Google) $3.02 $128.1 billion 25.2% October 28, after close
Microsoft $4.72 $90.7 billion 16.7% October 28, after close
Amazon $1.96 $202.2 billion 12.3% October 29, after close

Consensus is a reference point rather than a verdict. The market can sell a stock that beats EPS if management raises spending, lowers future margins or gives cautious demand guidance; it can also reward a modest beat if AI adoption and cash conversion improve.

What to watch as the Magnificent Seven report earnings

Microsoft: Azure capacity, Copilot adoption and cash flow

Microsoft’s prior-quarter Microsoft Cloud revenue grew 26% year over year, according to Schwab, while gross margin slipped slightly. The new report should be read for Azure AI growth and available capacity, the pace at which customers adopt and pay for Copilot, Microsoft Cloud margin direction, capital-expenditure plans and free cash flow.

Schwab reported that Stifel analysts were watching Azure consumption and believed Azure could exceed a 46% to 48% year-over-year growth consensus. That is an analyst view reported by Kiplinger, not a company forecast. A durable result would combine usage growth with pricing or product mix that protects margins.

Alphabet: Google Cloud profitability, Search resilience and Gemini usage

Google Cloud revenue grew 82% year over year to $24.8 billion in the prior quarter, as reported by Schwab. Investors need to separate that growth rate from its economic quality by checking Cloud operating margins, large-customer demand, Search and advertising resilience, Gemini adoption, and the spending required for Tensor Processing Units and data centers.

Alphabet’s free cash flow was negative $5.9 billion in the second quarter, according to Schwab. The figure makes management’s explanation of investment timing and the path back to positive cash generation as important as the revenue number.

Amazon: AWS AI demand, retail conditions and infrastructure commitments

AWS revenue grew 37% year over year in the prior quarter, according to Schwab. The report should clarify whether AI workloads are adding profitable consumption, how AWS margins are moving, and whether advertising and retail demand are offsetting infrastructure costs.

Kiplinger reported that Amazon management had said capacity would be insufficient in 2026 and 2027 and that demand for 2028 was already striking. That is management commentary reported by Kiplinger, not an independent forecast. Investors should compare it with the amount and timing of new data-center spending, custom-chip plans and free cash flow.

Why is cloud growth not enough by itself?

AI infrastructure produces a return only if additional revenue and margin eventually exceed the cost of servers, data centers, networking, energy, financing and long-term supply contracts. Schwab reported Financial Times data showing roughly $1.5 trillion in purchase commitments at six large technology companies, up from about $1 trillion three months earlier. Such commitments can lock in capacity before demand and pricing are fully visible.

Cash conversion provides a useful check on an upbeat income statement. Schwab reported trailing-12-month free cash flow of negative $7.6 billion for Amazon and a 91% year-over-year decline in Meta’s free cash flow to $748 million, alongside Alphabet’s negative second-quarter figure. These are company-specific measurements from different periods, so they should not be treated as a single sector total; they illustrate why capex, working capital and contractual obligations deserve equal attention with revenue.

Higher borrowing costs also matter. Nathan Peterson, director of derivatives research and strategy at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, said, “Higher interest costs are certainly an important factor in profitability.” A higher discount rate reduces the present value investors assign to profits expected several years from now, which is particularly relevant to long-lived AI projects.

What can investors do amid mixed signals?

The appropriate response depends on time horizon, diversification and risk tolerance. A disciplined process can reduce the temptation to trade a single headline.

  1. Write down the comparison points before the releases. Record the consensus EPS and revenue figures, then add the company metrics that matter more than a headline beat: cloud growth, cloud margin, AI customer adoption, capex, free cash flow and new commitments.
  2. Separate demand from capacity spending. Look for evidence that customers are using paid AI services, not merely that management is ordering more hardware. Ask whether incremental revenue is carrying a stable or improving margin.
  3. Read the guidance and call together. Management’s spending outlook, capacity comments and explanation of cash flow can change the meaning of the reported quarter. A revenue beat paired with sharply higher capex or weaker cash conversion is a different result from a beat with controlled investment.
  4. Set an event-risk limit. Concentrated reports on October 28 and 29 can create large overnight gaps. Investors who cannot tolerate that risk can review position size and diversification before the announcements rather than reacting after the market opens.
  5. Check the macro backdrop after each release. Reassess Treasury yields, oil and the Federal Reserve outlook before attributing a market move solely to company execution.
  6. Use a time horizon consistent with the thesis. A long-term AI infrastructure thesis may tolerate near-term margin pressure, while a short-term earnings trade is more exposed to guidance, valuation and the immediate market reaction.

Which scenarios could move the stocks?

Scenario What the reports would show Likely market interpretation
AI monetization with disciplined spending Cloud demand remains strong, paid AI usage accelerates, margins hold and capex is controlled relative to growth. Could support the AI trade and improve confidence in future cash returns.
Revenue growth but weak cash conversion Sales beat expectations while capex, purchase commitments or financing needs rise sharply. Investors may question returns on infrastructure and sell the shares despite the beat.
Macro shock Higher yields, an unexpected Federal Reserve signal, persistent inflation or another oil spike dominates company results. Strong earnings may fail to lift technology stocks if valuation pressure increases across the market.

Chris Larkin, managing director at E*TRADE from Morgan Stanley, said AI jitters and oil prices had kept stocks off balance and that the week’s earnings and economic data could push the market out of its trading range. Peterson similarly said a surprise in AI monetization or accelerated product adoption could ease fears about spending and produce a favorable post-earnings move. Both comments describe possible market reactions, not guaranteed outcomes.

How should investors read the first post-earnings move?

The initial move reflects the gap between reported results and expectations, but the conference call and forward guidance often determine whether that move lasts. Check whether the stock reaction is consistent with changes in cloud margins, AI pricing, capex and free cash flow. If macro conditions change overnight, the index move may say more about rates or oil than about the company’s quarter.

The practical conclusion is to judge Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon on the conversion of AI demand into durable margins and cash, not on revenue growth alone. Keeping the three scenarios above in view helps investors respond to new information without turning a concentrated earnings week into an all-or-nothing bet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I trade before Microsoft and Alphabet report?

Pre-earnings trading carries overnight gap risk because both companies report after the market closes. Investors who are not specifically managing that event risk can wait for the release, guidance and conference call before changing a long-term position.

What does negative free cash flow mean for a cloud company?

It can reflect a temporary build-out of data centers, servers and networking, but it also shows that accounting profit is not yet translating into available cash. The important follow-up is management’s expected timing for cash recovery and the return expected on committed infrastructure.

Can oil prices affect technology stocks even when earnings are strong?

Higher oil can reinforce inflation concerns, lift bond yields and increase the chance of restrictive monetary policy. It can also affect consumer spending and operating costs, so the market may reprice technology shares for macro reasons unrelated to the reported quarter.

When should consensus estimates be updated?

Use the latest published estimates available immediately before each release because analyst forecasts can change. After earnings, replace the old consensus with management guidance and the next quarter’s estimates rather than comparing the stock only with the previous quarter.
