No. A fresh Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop installation does not ship with a built-in AI assistant or other AI tooling. Ubuntu is an operating system that can run AI software, so you can add a graphical assistant, install a local language model, or use a cloud service after installation.
The practical choice is between convenience and control. App Center is the simplest route for a desktop application; local tools such as Gemma or Ollama keep inference on your computer when the model and hardware support it; cloud services are generally easier to run but send prompts to an online provider. Ubuntu’s planned desktop AI work is aimed at accessibility, including privacy-focused, local voice-to-speech dictation, rather than a current built-in chatbot.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop does not include one in a fresh installation. The Ubuntu Wiki states: “As of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, a fresh installation of Ubuntu Desktop contains no built-in AI tooling.” That means there is no default conversational assistant waiting in the application menu, Settings, or the desktop search interface.
This is different from saying that Ubuntu cannot run AI. Ubuntu Desktop is a general-purpose Linux platform, and its documentation describes support for a variety of AI tools and workflows. You install those tools in the same broad way as other Linux applications, then choose whether they process prompts locally or through a cloud service.

What can Ubuntu do with AI today?
Ubuntu provides the operating-system environment, package formats, drivers, libraries, and terminal needed to run AI applications. The assistant itself is supplied by an application or model that you add. There is no single Ubuntu-branded assistant that defines the Desktop experience in 26.04.
That separation is useful because it lets you choose a workflow suited to your privacy, hardware, and comfort with the command line. A small local model can answer or summarize without an account, while a graphical application may be easier for occasional use. A cloud-backed service can offer larger models without requiring you to download them, but it depends on an internet connection and the provider’s data policies.

There are four practical routes. The first two run models through terminal commands, the third installs a graphical application, and the fourth uses a web or cloud-backed service that you access from a browser or application.
Run a local model with the Gemma inference snap
Ubuntu’s AI guide gives Gemma as an example of an inference snap. An inference snap installs the model workflow locally and is intended to be optimized for the machine on which it runs. The basic example is:
sudo snap install gemma4
gemma4 chat
The first command installs the snap and normally asks for your account password because it uses administrative privileges. The second starts an interactive chat session in the terminal. Your prompts and the model’s responses are handled by the local installation rather than requiring a hosted chat account.
Model packages and command names can change. If the command is rejected, first check the current package instructions and the model’s available tags instead of assuming that an older example is still valid. A local model also needs enough memory and processor or graphics capacity to load its weights; Ubuntu’s official material does not publish one universal minimum specification.
Run an open model with Ollama
Ollama is another local-model route documented in Ubuntu’s AI guidance. The example installation and run commands are:
sudo snap install ollama
ollama run qwen3:0.6b
Here, qwen3:0.6b identifies a particular model tag. The tag is an example, not a permanent promise that every future release will use the same name. Ollama can run open models locally and also offers cloud models, so confirm which mode you are using before entering sensitive information.
After the model starts, Ollama presents a prompt in the terminal. You can ask questions, request code, or have it transform text. Closing the session ends the interactive chat, while the Ollama service may remain installed for later use. The model files can occupy substantial disk space, especially when you move to larger variants.
Install a graphical assistant from App Center
If you prefer windows and menus, use Ubuntu’s App Center. Ubuntu documents both snaps and Debian packages as application formats, and App Center can handle the installation for compatible entries.

- Open App Center from the application launcher.
- Enter the assistant’s name or a descriptive term such as “AI chat” in the search field.
- Select the application and read its publisher, permissions, package format, and description.
- Click Install. Ubuntu may request your user password to authorize the change.
- Launch the application from the application grid and complete any account or model setup it requests.
A graphical package is not automatically a local model. Some desktop assistants are front ends for a cloud API, some bundle a local engine, and some support both. Check the application’s own documentation and settings for its data-processing mode before pasting private documents into it.
Use a cloud assistant in a browser or app
Ubuntu does not prevent you from using an online assistant. Open the service in a supported browser, or install its Linux application if the provider supplies one. This is usually the least demanding option for your computer because the provider performs inference on its servers.
Cloud use introduces different requirements: a working internet connection, an account for many services, and acceptance of the provider’s retention and training policies. Treat prompts as data sent outside your computer unless the service explicitly documents a private or local mode.
How do I install and start a local AI model step by step?
For a first experiment, choose one local workflow and verify it before downloading several models. The following sequence minimizes confusion about permissions, storage, and whether a model is actually running locally.
1. Check the basics before installing
- Use a supported 64-bit Ubuntu Desktop installation with enough free storage for the snap and model files.
- Keep the system updated through Ubuntu’s normal Software Updater or package tools.
- Decide whether your prompts may leave the computer. A local command and a cloud command are not equivalent from a privacy perspective.
- Close memory-heavy applications while testing a model, especially on a laptop with limited RAM.
2. Install one inference tool
Choose either the Gemma example or the Ollama example. Open Terminal and run the two commands for that tool. Enter your password when prompted; nothing appears on screen while a Unix terminal accepts password input.
3. Start a small, known model
Use the documented Gemma chat command or the Ollama model tag shown above. A smaller model normally starts more easily and gives you a baseline for responsiveness. Do not infer that a fast response from a small model means a larger model will perform the same way.
4. Test with non-sensitive prompts
Ask for a short explanation, a simple shell command, or a summary of text that contains no personal or confidential data. Check whether the answers are coherent and whether the computer remains usable. Local models can produce confident errors, so verify commands and factual claims before acting on them.
5. Stop, update, or remove the setup deliberately
Exit the chat using the tool’s documented quit command or the terminal’s interrupt key if appropriate. Keep the model only if its speed, quality, and disk usage meet your needs. If you remove it, also check for downloaded model files and cached data; uninstalling the front-end snap does not necessarily erase every model cache in every tool.
Which Ubuntu AI option is best for my situation?
No single route is best for everyone. Compare the options by where computation occurs, how you interact with them, and what the installation requires.
| Option | Where processing happens | Interface | Internet requirement | Hardware and storage considerations | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemma inference snap | On your Ubuntu computer | Terminal chat | Needed to install or update; not inherently required for each local prompt | Depends on the model and your CPU, GPU, memory, and disk; no universal minimum is published | Users who want a documented local-model example with a simple command-line workflow |
| Ollama with an open model | On your computer for local models; cloud models are a separate mode | Terminal chat and Ollama tooling | Local models can work offline after download; cloud mode needs connectivity | Model size controls download size, memory use, and response speed | Users who want to switch among open models or later use a cloud option |
| App Center application | Varies by application: local, cloud, or hybrid | Graphical desktop interface | Usually needed for installation; runtime needs depend on the app | Read the app’s requirements and permissions; graphical packaging does not guarantee local inference | People who prefer a discoverable, mouse-driven setup |
| Browser-based cloud assistant | Provider’s servers | Web browser | Required during use | Low local model burden, but account and service availability may be required | Occasional users who need the quickest start or access to larger hosted models |
Can Ubuntu run an AI assistant offline?
Yes, a local model can continue responding without a cloud connection once its software and model files are installed. The Gemma and local Ollama examples are designed for on-device inference. Offline capability does not mean zero setup: you still need an initial download, suitable hardware, and enough storage for updates or additional models.
Rank #3
Offline results can also be slower or less capable than hosted systems, particularly on a machine without a discrete GPU or with limited memory. Ubuntu’s official documentation does not provide a universal performance benchmark, so judge a model on your own computer rather than relying on a generic speed claim.
What hardware does a local Ubuntu AI assistant need?
The requirement changes with the model. A small model may run acceptably on a recent CPU and ordinary desktop memory, while a larger model can need much more RAM, faster storage, or a supported GPU. The official Ubuntu material does not state one minimum CPU, RAM, GPU, or disk specification that applies to every assistant.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse these practical checks before selecting a large model:
- Memory: leave headroom for Ubuntu and your other applications; a model that consumes nearly all available RAM will cause swapping and very slow responses.
- Storage: reserve space for the model, snap, updates, and caches. Several model variants can consume many gigabytes.
- Processor or GPU: acceleration can improve response time, but compatibility depends on the particular tool and hardware driver.
- Thermals and power: sustained inference can increase fan noise, heat, and battery drain on laptops.
If a model fails to load, try a smaller variant before changing system files or installing experimental drivers. The error message usually indicates whether the issue is missing memory, unavailable hardware acceleration, or a package problem.
How private are local and cloud assistants on Ubuntu?
Local inference keeps the prompt and response on the computer while the model runs. That can reduce exposure to a remote provider, but it does not automatically make the entire setup private: logs, shell history, crash reports, backups, and any connected extensions may still retain data.
Cloud assistants process prompts on remote infrastructure under the provider’s terms. Review retention, account, and training settings before using workplace, financial, medical, or personally identifying information. A graphical app can be cloud-backed even when it was installed from Ubuntu App Center, so verify its mode instead of judging privacy from the installation method.

What problems are common, and how can I fix them?
The snap installs but the command is not found
Close and reopen Terminal so the updated command path is loaded. If the problem persists, confirm the snap name and command in its current documentation; package names and exposed commands can change between releases.
The model downloads but will not start
Check free disk space and available memory, then try a smaller model. A model can be downloaded successfully yet fail during loading because its runtime memory requirement exceeds what is available.
Responses are extremely slow
Watch system resource usage while a prompt is running. Stop large background applications, use a smaller model, and confirm whether hardware acceleration is supported and enabled. Do not assume that adding a graphical front end will make inference faster.
The assistant gives unreliable answers
Local and cloud language models can both hallucinate. Ask for sources when appropriate, verify commands in a safe directory or virtual machine, and avoid granting an assistant unrestricted access to files or administrative actions.

Read the permissions and publisher information before installing. If the app’s data handling is unclear, look for a local-only setting or choose a tool whose documentation explains where prompts are processed.
Is Ubuntu planning a built-in AI assistant?
Ubuntu’s stated desktop plans focus on accessibility rather than promising a general-purpose chatbot in the current release. The Ubuntu Wiki describes future work such as voice-to-speech dictation, local large language models, and a privacy-first design.
Those are plans for future Desktop releases, not capabilities that a fresh Ubuntu 26.04 installation guarantees. Until such features are shipped and documented for a specific release, install the assistant you need separately and treat roadmap language as an indication of direction rather than a current product specification.
What should you choose first?
Choose App Center when you want a visible application and do not want to manage model commands. Choose the Gemma snap or local Ollama when keeping prompts on your own machine matters and you are willing to monitor storage and performance. Choose a browser-based cloud service when you need the quickest setup or a hosted model, provided its privacy terms are acceptable.
Whichever route you select, start with non-sensitive prompts, a small workload, and one tool at a time. Ubuntu supplies the foundation; the assistant’s capabilities, costs, privacy behavior, and hardware demands come from the application and model you add.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an AI assistant on Ubuntu without creating an account?
A locally installed model can generally be used without a hosted-service account after the software and model files are downloaded. An App Center application or cloud assistant may still require its own account, so check its setup screen and privacy policy.
Will a local model on Ubuntu work with no internet connection at all?
After installation and model downloads finish, local inference can operate without an active connection. You will still need internet access for future model updates, package updates, or any cloud mode offered by the same tool.
Can an Ubuntu AI assistant control my files or run commands?
Only if you give the application the permissions or integration needed to do so. Keep file access narrow, review generated shell commands, and test potentially destructive operations in a disposable environment before approving them.
How much disk space should I reserve for Ubuntu AI tools?
There is no single fixed amount because model variants differ considerably in size, and caches or multiple models add to the total. Check the selected model’s download size and leave additional space for updates rather than filling the system partition.
