The iPad (9th generation) and many older iPads accept ordinary wired headphones directly. Apple’s current USB-C iPad families—including the iPad (A16), iPad (10th generation), iPad mini, iPad Air and iPad Pro—use USB-C headphones, Bluetooth, AirPlay or a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter instead. Check your exact model before buying an accessory.
Which iPads have a built-in headphone jack?
The iPad (9th generation), introduced in 2021, has a physical port labeled “Headphone jack” in Apple’s documentation (hardware diagram; technical specifications). Many earlier standard iPad, iPad Air and iPad mini models also include one. Older iPad Pro models vary, so verify the specific model rather than assuming every older Pro has a jack.

A circular 3.5 mm socket on the edge is the definitive visual check. A speaker grille, microphone opening or USB-C port is not a headphone jack.
How to identify your model
- Open Settings → General → About.
- Note Model Name and Model Number.
- Match those details with Apple’s technical-specifications page for that generation. Do not rely only on screen size or appearance; several generations look alike.
Which current iPads do not have one?
Apple’s current USB-C lineup does not list a built-in 3.5 mm port. This includes:

How to use 3.5 mm headphones with a USB-C iPad
- Get a USB-C-to-3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter that explicitly supports USB-C audio output and iPad compatibility.
- Insert the adapter’s USB-C plug into the iPad.
- Insert the headphones’ 3.5 mm plug into the adapter.
- Start playback and adjust volume on the iPad.
Apple documents this adapter path at Apple Support and its USB-C iPad guide. Apple’s official adapter was listed at $9 in the U.S. when checked in August 2026 (Apple Store). A functioning adapter contains the required audio electronics; a passive USB-C cable with a 3.5 mm plug is not automatically an audio adapter. Third-party models can differ in microphone, inline-button and control support.

USB-C headphones
USB-C headphones connect directly to a USB-C iPad. They must support audio over USB-C; a cable that merely fits the port is not necessarily an audio device. They may draw power from the iPad and will not plug directly into a 3.5 mm-only device without another adapter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBluetooth headphones or AirPods
Bluetooth avoids occupying the USB-C port and eliminates cable adapters. It requires charging the headphones and pairing them, and wireless latency can matter for instruments, games or live monitoring. Apple lists Bluetooth and AirPlay as audio choices at Apple Support.

- Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.
USB-C audio interfaces
Musicians and podcasters can use a compatible USB-C audio interface for headphone output and, where supported, microphone or instrument input. Apple lists USB-C audio interfaces among supported audio connections, but the interface’s own power, driver and latency requirements still apply.
What if your iPad uses Lightning?

- A Lightning iPad with a built-in 3.5 mm jack accepts headphones directly.
- A Lightning iPad without a jack needs a Lightning-to-3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter.
- A USB-C iPad needs USB-C headphones or a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter; a Lightning adapter is not the normal solution.
- Lightning headphones are intended for Lightning devices and are not automatically compatible with USB-C iPads.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can you charge an iPad while using wired headphones?
A simple USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter occupies the iPad’s only USB-C port, so it cannot provide charging at the same time. For simultaneous charging, choose a USB-C hub or dock whose specifications explicitly promise both audio output (3.5 mm or USB audio) and USB-C power pass-through. Not every hub includes analog audio, and charging performance, port layout and compatibility vary. A USB-C display, dock or audio interface may provide another audio route, but do not assume it will.

Troubleshooting headphone problems
Nothing plays through the headphones
- Unplug and reconnect the adapter or headphones.
- Push the 3.5 mm plug fully into the socket.
- Try another app or audio source.
- Check the selected output in the app or Control Center.
- Test a different pair of headphones.
- Restart the iPad if the accessory is not detected.
- Replace an adapter that the iPad does not recognize.
The adapter or hub is wrong
- Use USB-C-to-3.5 mm for USB-C iPads and Lightning-to-3.5 mm for applicable Lightning iPads.
- Confirm third-party products state USB-C digital-audio support, not just USB-C charging or data.
- For a hub, verify both audio output and power pass-through.
The microphone or inline controls do not work
Headset microphone and button support depends on the adapter or interface. Check that accessory’s specifications; do not treat support as universal.
Bluetooth audio is silent
Confirm the headphones are paired, powered on and selected as the active output. Reconnect them and test another audio source.
Bottom line
The iPad (9th generation) and many older models have a built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack. Current USB-C iPads—including the iPad (A16), iPad (10th generation), iPad mini, iPad Air and iPad Pro—do not, but they work with USB-C headphones, Bluetooth, AirPlay or a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter. Open Settings → General → About and identify your exact model before buying anything.
