Those factors made a forecast more useful as a set of roles than as a guaranteed team sheet: Morris and Tessmann were candidates for a double pivot, McKennie and Tillman could play ahead of them, Weah could provide width, and Balogun was the likely central reference. Tactical matchup
How the United States tried to attack
The U.S. needed to play through Ecuador’s midfield pressure and create service for Balogun. Morris and Tessmann supplied the base, while McKennie and Tillman operated higher. Weah and Arfsten were important for width, particularly with Robinson unavailable. The central question was whether the U.S. could sustain possession without leaving space behind its fullbacks.
Ecuador’s transition threat

What the game showed
Ecuador’s opener came from a quick counterattack finished by Valencia. The U.S. equalizer followed pressure high up the field and a low delivery from Tillman that Balogun converted, illustrating the two contrasting routes to goal.

Why the friendly mattered
This was preparation rather than a competition. Ecuador had finished second in CONMEBOL qualifying, and U.S. Soccer described the team as unbeaten in 11 matches entering the October 10 meeting; both descriptions apply to that pre-match context, not as permanent current records. The test gave Pochettino information about midfield combinations, depth at fullback and center forward, and the team’s ability to respond to a physically strong, organized South American opponent.
The 1–1 draw was useful evidence for squad selection, but it did not change either country’s World Cup qualification status.
