What Happens If You Change Your Nintendo Account Region?

Changing your Nintendo Account’s country/region usually changes the Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store region used by that account. It does not create a new account, erase the account, or normally delete local Switch save data. The risks are mainly commercial: your store catalog, prices, currency, payment options, taxes, promotions, subscriptions, pending orders and DLC compatibility may change.

Before confirming, check your eShop balance, active subscriptions, automatic renewal, pending transactions, payment method and the sales region of any game or DLC you plan to use.

What “changing region” actually changes

The setting is your Nintendo Account’s country/region of residence, managed through the web account portal at accounts.nintendo.com. It is not the same as changing the Switch’s language, altering a console setting, or converting a physical game into another region’s edition.

The account region influences which eShop and Nintendo Store you use. That can change:

  • Available games, DLC and demos
  • Payment methods and prepaid-code eligibility
  • Age ratings, language options and publisher services

A game’s sales region is a separate issue. A physical cartridge, digital game and DLC can each have regional compatibility requirements.

What happens to digital games and purchase history?

Digital purchases remain associated with the Nintendo Account that bought them. Nintendo says downloadable purchase history and purchases cannot be moved to another Nintendo Account (Nintendo eShop precautions).

Changing the region does not transfer a purchase to a new account or turn it into a purchase made in the destination country. You may still need to redownload or manage the software through the normal download or virtual-game-card process for your console.

Ownership and store availability are different. An entitlement can remain attached to your account even if the title has a different price, is not listed in the target store, or has different download conditions there. Do not assume that every purchased item will appear identically in every regional storefront.

What happens to DLC?

DLC is the most common practical compatibility problem. Nintendo warns that DLC bought for one country may not work with game software sold in another country (Nintendo eShop precautions).

Examples

  • A North American physical game with European DLC may fail to recognize the add-on.
  • A Japanese game with North American DLC may launch normally but not use the extra content.
  • Changing your account region does not convert existing DLC into a compatible regional version.

Compatibility is title-specific, not an absolute rule that all cross-region DLC fails. Before buying or changing regions, check the game’s product code or sales region, the DLC listing’s supported software and any publisher statement about cross-region support.

What happens to your eShop balance?

Funds are managed at the Nintendo Account level. Nintendo states that funds cannot be transferred or merged between Nintendo Accounts, and its support guidance says added funds cannot be canceled (Add Funds to Your Nintendo eShop Balance).

  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

Do not assume a balance in U.S. dollars will automatically become usable Japanese yen, euros or another currency. Regional rules can determine whether the account change is allowed and how existing funds are treated. Resolve the balance using the conditions Nintendo currently displays for your account.

Prepaid and download codes can also be country-locked. Nintendo’s Japanese purchase guidance says Japanese codes require the Nintendo Account country/region to be Japan (Nintendo eShop purchase procedures).

What happens to saved payment methods?

Nintendo identifies registered credit-card information as account-managed data (Nintendo Account Support). A card that worked in the old store may be rejected in the new one because of its issuer country, billing address, currency, fraud checks or regional payment rules.

Changing region does not guarantee that the existing card, PayPal account or another payment option will work. Be prepared to remove or re-enter a payment method that is valid for the destination country.

What happens to Nintendo Switch Online?

Nintendo Switch Online subscription status is associated with the Nintendo Account (Nintendo Account Support; Add Users). That fact is different from guaranteeing every subscription condition during a region change.

Check these items before confirming:

  • Current membership and expiration date
  • Automatic renewal status
  • Family membership and organizer relationships
  • Expansion Pack benefits
  • Region-specific prepaid membership codes or pending renewals

Nintendo’s available guidance does not provide one universal rule for every region-change scenario. Read the account warning and subscription page for your specific country and account state rather than assuming membership will definitely continue, stop or renew in the same way.

Will changing region delete your save data?

Changing the account country/region is not, by itself, a save-data deletion or transfer process. Save data is handled by the console’s user and save-data system, separately from purchase history.

Nintendo says that signing into the same account on multiple consoles does not automatically share save data or installed downloadable software (Add Users). Use Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud where the game supports it, or use Nintendo’s official console-transfer process when moving to another system.

  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

Do not delete and recreate the Switch user to force a region change. Nintendo states that deleting a user deletes that user’s locally stored save data, although the linked Nintendo Account itself is not deleted (Nintendo Switch user support).

What happens to physical cartridges?

A physical cartridge is not automatically transformed into another region’s digital edition. A cartridge may run on your console, but DLC and downloadable extras can follow separate regional rules. Online features, languages, age ratings and publisher services may also differ.

For that reason, avoid the absolute claim that every Switch game is region-free. Evaluate the specific base game, DLC, online service and language support involved.

How to change the Nintendo Account region

Use the Nintendo Account website, not a console-user deletion or a new account, and confirm the labels shown on your live account because Nintendo can change its interface.

  1. Sign in at accounts.nintendo.com.
  2. Open User Information.
  3. Open Profile, or the section containing your personal account details.
  4. Find Country/region of residence.
  5. Select the destination country or region.
  6. Read every warning about balance, subscriptions, pending orders, payment methods and other restrictions.
  7. Confirm only after resolving anything Nintendo identifies as incompatible.

The exact menu labels or available destinations may differ by account and current Nintendo policy. Keep access to the account’s registered email; losing that access can interfere with password resets and account changes (Nintendo Account sign-in support).

Should you change the existing account or create a separate one?

Situation Usually better choice Why
Permanent move to another country Change the existing account after checking restrictions Keeps the account and its history together while reflecting your residence.
Temporary foreign eShop shopping Consider a separate account Leaves the original region, balance and payment setup untouched.
Existing balance, preorder or pending order Wait and resolve it first Nintendo may block or complicate the change.
Important region-specific DLC library Check every title before changing DLC compatibility depends on the game’s sales region.
Family or child account Review family and parental-control implications Child accounts and family relationships are managed differently.

Advantages of a separate account

  • Preserves the original account’s region, funds, purchase history and payment setup.
  • Avoids repeatedly changing the primary account’s country.
  • Can be linked to the same console as another user.

Trade-offs

  • Purchases and funds stay on the second account and cannot be merged into the original.
  • Save data may be associated with the console user that launches the game.
  • Multiple accounts add payment, parental-control and subscription-management work.
  • DLC compatibility still depends on the game’s region.

Nintendo describes funds, payment information, purchase history and subscription status as account-specific (Nintendo Account Support).

Pre-change checklist

  • Spend or resolve any eShop balance.
  • Check Nintendo Switch Online membership and automatic renewal.
  • Review pending preorders, orders and refunds.
  • Confirm that your intended payment method is issued and billed in the destination country.
  • Check the sales region of physical games and every planned DLC item.
  • Back up eligible saves through Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud.
  • Confirm access to the registered email and sign-in credentials.
  • Record important account, subscription and purchase details.
  • Read the live warning on the country-change screen before submitting.

If the change fails

Use the specific Nintendo error or warning as the diagnosis. It may identify a remaining balance, pending transaction, subscription setting, family-account condition or payment restriction. Resolve that listed condition and try again through the account website.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not delete the Switch user, unlink the account, use a VPN or buy a replacement account as a first response. A VPN does not change the Nintendo Account country, remove balance restrictions or guarantee payment and DLC compatibility. If you cannot resolve the condition, use Nintendo’s support channel for the country currently attached to the account.

Can you change back?

Reverting may be possible, subject to Nintendo’s current account rules and the account’s state. Treat the change as an account-management decision rather than a harmless toggle: switching back does not necessarily undo purchases made in the interim, currency complications, DLC incompatibility or subscription-renewal changes.
