Yes. Moonshot AI’s policies say that both consumer Kimi and Kimi OpenPlatform collect the prompts and other content you submit, along with information generated in response. The policies also describe uses for service improvement that can include model training or refinement. Consumer Kimi offers a request to stop using your content for model training after identity verification; OpenPlatform describes contractual or enterprise arrangements for customers seeking stronger restrictions. Neither policy gives one universal number of days after which every prompt is deleted.

What does “Moonshot AI stores your prompts” mean?

Moonshot’s privacy policies describe collection, use, and retention of user content—not simply whether a chat appears in a history list. A prompt is part of the content you provide to the service, and the service may also collect the response and related account or usage information. Deleting a visible conversation, changing a memory setting, and asking the company to stop a specified use are different controls; one should not be assumed to accomplish the others.

The consumer Kimi policy is published by Beijing Moonshot Technology Co., Ltd. It covers kimi.com, Kimi apps, Kimi Claw, and related products. The Kimi OpenPlatform policy is controlled by MOONSHOT AI PTE. LTD. in Singapore. The consumer policy is listed as effective August 31, 2026, and last updated August 24, 2026. The OpenPlatform policy has different wording and applies to the developer/API service. A product-specific policy may take precedence, so the applicable product and terms matter.

What information do Kimi and OpenPlatform collect?

The consumer policy says Kimi collects content users input and receive, including text, voice or audio, images, and video. It also lists quota usage, chat history, device and network data, identifiers, IP address, browser type, language, and access time. The policy explains that collecting and using text, audio, images, or files is necessary for ordinary conversations.

OpenPlatform defines user content as prompts, audio, images, videos, files, and other content that users input or generate. Its policy also describes collection of account, log, device, usage, cookie, and communication information. In practice, an API request can therefore involve more than the prompt string alone: the content sent to the service and associated account or operational information are within the policy’s described categories.

These lists describe categories, not a promise that every category is collected in every interaction. The policies do not publish a per-prompt inventory showing precisely which technical fields are retained for each request.

Can Moonshot AI use Kimi prompts to train its models?

For consumer Kimi, the policy says content may be used to optimize models when it has been encrypted, strictly de-identified, and cannot be used to identify a specific person. It also says product access and usage may be analyzed to improve the service experience. The policy provides a customer-service request path for users who do not want their content used for model training.

OpenPlatform’s policy says service improvement includes training and refining underlying technology, such as machine-learning models and algorithms. Its terms also permit use of content to provide, maintain, develop, support, and improve the service, as well as for legal compliance, enforcement, safety, and security. For customers that need restrictions on using their content to train or improve Moonshot models, the terms point to enterprise arrangements or separate written agreements.

These are not identical promises. The consumer policy describes de-identification and an individual customer-service request. The OpenPlatform policy describes training and refinement as a service-improvement purpose, while stronger restrictions may require a negotiated agreement. Do not assume that a consumer setting or request automatically applies to an API account, or that an API contract changes consumer Kimi settings.

How do consumer Kimi and OpenPlatform differ?

The key distinction is which service and policy govern the conversation. This comparison summarizes the stated terms; “not stated” means the cited policy description does not establish that detail.

Question Consumer Kimi Kimi OpenPlatform
Policy entity and scope Beijing Moonshot Technology Co., Ltd.; kimi.com, apps, Kimi Claw, and related products. Effective August 31, 2026; updated August 24, 2026. MOONSHOT AI PTE. LTD.; developer/API platform. Policy effective or update date: not stated in the cited policy summary.
Model improvement De-identified input and output may be used to optimize models. Customer service can receive a training-use request, subject to identity verification. Improvement includes training or refining models and algorithms. Stronger restrictions may be discussed through enterprise arrangements or separate written agreements.
Retention wording Retain only as long as needed for service purposes; users may delete historical conversations. No fixed prompt-retention period is stated. Retain as long as necessary for service and legitimate business purposes and legal obligations; account, input, and payment information are retained while an account is active. No universal day count is stated.
Storage location A single equivalent storage region is not stated in the cited consumer policy. Collected information is stored on secure servers in Singapore; transfers outside a user’s country may occur with safeguards.
User controls Delete historical chats, manage saved conversation memory, and request that content not be used for model training. Rights include access, correction, transfer, deletion, restriction, consent withdrawal, and complaints to competent authorities; account deletion is irreversible under the policy.

How long does Kimi keep conversation history?

Neither policy states a single retention countdown such as 30 or 90 days for every prompt. Consumer Kimi says chat history is collected to support continuity and that historical conversation information can be deleted. Its retention language is based on the period needed for service purposes, with anonymization or deletion when products cease operations, subject to law.

OpenPlatform likewise uses purpose-based retention: information is kept as long as needed to provide services, meet policy purposes, serve legitimate business needs such as improvement, dispute resolution, safety or security, and comply with legal obligations. It expressly gives account, input, and payment information as examples of data retained while an account is active. It also says retention can vary according to information type, sensitivity, legal requirements, and sometimes settings.

That means deleting a chat from the interface should not be read as proof that all associated information disappears instantly from every operational system, backup, or legally required record. The published language does not provide a deletion schedule for each data category or a specific backup-purge deadline.

Where is Kimi data stored?

OpenPlatform says collected information is stored on secure servers in Singapore and may be transferred outside the user’s country with safeguards. The cited consumer Kimi policy does not make the same single-region statement, so Singapore should not be treated as a confirmed storage location for every Kimi product or account.

For a product used across borders, storage location and transfer rules can matter for company policies and legal obligations. API customers should check their applicable OpenPlatform terms and any separate agreement; consumer users should consult the policy that applies to the specific Kimi product they use.

What controls can users use to manage prompts and account data?

The available controls differ by product. In consumer Kimi, chat deletion, conversation-memory settings, and a customer-service training-use request address separate aspects of data handling. OpenPlatform lists broader data-rights channels and warns that account deletion cannot be undone.

Consumer Kimi controls

  • Delete historical conversations: The consumer policy says users can delete historical conversation information.
  • Manage saved conversation memory: Memory can be disabled or re-enabled in product settings, and saved content can be viewed and managed. This is a memory control, not a stated training opt-out.
  • Request a training-use stop: Contact Kimi customer service through the contact details in Section 11 of the consumer policy. The company says it will verify identity and then stop using the user’s content for model training.

The policy does not provide a universal in-app toggle for this training request or specify how long verification and processing take. Use the official contact details in the current policy rather than assuming a setting or chat deletion submits the request.

OpenPlatform rights and account deletion

  • Rights requests: The policy lists rights to access, rectify or update, transfer, delete, restrict processing, withdraw consent, and lodge complaints with competent authorities.
  • Contact route: If a right cannot be exercised through settings, the policy directs users to [email protected].
  • Account deletion: The policy says a deleted account cannot be reactivated and associated content or information cannot be retrieved. Treat account deletion as permanent, not as a reversible sign-out or history-cleanup action.
  • Training restrictions: Customers needing restrictions on content use for training or model improvement should discuss enterprise arrangements or a separate written agreement.

Who else may receive OpenPlatform information, and what security is described?

OpenPlatform says information may be shared with service providers when needed for their work. Its examples include hosting, cloud, customer-service, safety-monitoring, analytics, and payment providers. The policy also describes possible sharing with affiliates, parties to corporate transactions, or authorities in specified circumstances.

The policy describes encryption, access controls, monitoring, backups, and breach-response measures. It also says absolute security cannot be guaranteed. These safeguards are not a guarantee that data is never accessed, disclosed, or exposed, and the policy does not establish that every request receives human review. Service-provider access for a defined function should not be confused with a claim that a person routinely reads every conversation.

What should you do before sending sensitive information?

Because the policies allow collection of prompts and describe improvement uses, treat Kimi and OpenPlatform as services where submitted content is processed under the applicable policy—not as a private notebook with an established zero-retention mode. If a prompt contains confidential, regulated, or identifying information, minimize what you send and confirm that your organization’s rules allow the product and data type.

  1. Identify the product. Determine whether you are using consumer Kimi, Kimi Claw, an app, or OpenPlatform. Do not assume the consumer policy applies to API traffic.
  2. Check the current applicable policy and any contract. Product policies can differ, and OpenPlatform customers may have separate written terms.
  3. Minimize the prompt. Remove names, credentials, account numbers, confidential documents, and other details that are not needed to get an answer. This is a prudent handling step, not a claim that the service will automatically redact them.
  4. Choose the relevant control. Delete a conversation to remove it from historical chat management, adjust saved memory if that is the concern, or contact customer service for the consumer model-training request. These actions serve different purposes.
  5. For API use, resolve contractual requirements first. If your rules prohibit training use or require specific handling, obtain a suitable written arrangement before sending the data. The public policy alone does not establish that a zero-retention option is available.
  6. Keep a record of important requests. Save the date, product, account, and the request submitted so you can follow up through the applicable customer-service or API contact channel.

What the policies do not establish

Some questions cannot be answered with a precise guarantee from the published policy language summarized here. The policies do not establish one retention period for all prompts, an equivalent consumer-Kimi storage region, or a universal zero-retention mode. They also do not state whether deleting a particular conversation removes information already used in model training, nor do they promise that a training-use request retroactively removes earlier use. For those points, ask the relevant service through its official support channel or obtain written terms that address the use case.

Privacy policies and product settings can change. The consumer policy dates above apply to the version identified; users should check the current policy for their product before relying on a control or retention statement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does deleting a Kimi chat remove it from model training?

The published consumer policy does not say that deleting a historical conversation reverses any earlier model-training use. It describes chat deletion and a separate customer-service request to stop training use, so do not treat one as confirmation of the other.

Can I use Kimi for confidential work documents?

That depends on your organization’s confidentiality rules, the product, and any contractual terms in force. The policies describe collection and possible service-improvement use, so confirm that the permitted data handling meets your requirements before submitting confidential material.

Does a person at Moonshot read every Kimi prompt?

The policies summarized here do not say that every conversation is routinely read by a person. They do describe service providers for customer service and safety monitoring, so they also do not support a blanket guarantee that no person or provider can ever access information.

Does Kimi offer a zero-retention mode?

The cited policy language does not establish a universal zero-retention mode. OpenPlatform retention is described as purpose-based, with account, input, and payment information retained while an account is active; any different commitment would need to be confirmed in applicable product terms or a written agreement.
