Yes. Overlays, recording and streaming tools, chat clients, browsers, launchers, RGB utilities and “optimizer” programs can lower or destabilize FPS when they compete with a game for CPU time, GPU work, memory or VRAM. The impact is not a fixed percentage: it depends on the game, your hardware, the active feature and whether the system is CPU-, GPU- or memory-limited.
The dependable way to find out is a controlled A/B test. Run the same game build, scene, settings, resolution, power mode and thermal state with one utility enabled and then disabled. Repeat the run and compare average FPS together with low-percentile FPS or frame time; latency is useful when responsiveness matters.

It can, but “gaming software” is not one behavior. A simple FPS counter may add very little work, while video capture, instant replay, an animated overlay or a browser playing media can create measurable contention. Microsoft Flight Simulator Support explicitly warns that overlays and background applications can negatively affect performance, and NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance recommends disabling third-party tools while diagnosing poor results.
Overlays add rendering and telemetry work
An overlay must collect data, update its interface and draw that interface over the game. The extra work can involve the CPU, GPU, system memory and VRAM. A transparent notification that appears only briefly may be harmless; a continuously updating performance panel, browser layer or animated widget has a larger opportunity to interfere with frame delivery.

Recording and streaming compete for resources
Screen capture reads frames and sends them to an encoder. Depending on the encoder and settings, that process can consume GPU time, CPU time, memory bandwidth and storage bandwidth. Instant replay is still recording continuously even when you have not pressed the save key, so test it separately from ordinary screenshot or clip functions.
Background apps matter even when their windows are hidden
Chat clients, browsers, launchers, RGB controllers and optimization utilities may wake periodically, poll hardware or keep data in RAM and VRAM. Those bursts can produce hitching without dramatically changing the average FPS. A launcher left open is not automatically harmful, but it is another variable in a repeatable benchmark.
Why does the same utility affect some games but not others?
The result follows the bottleneck in that particular game and scene. If the game already saturates the CPU, a chat client or telemetry collector has less spare CPU time to borrow. If the GPU is fully occupied, an overlay that needs GPU compositing can compete directly with rendering. A memory-bound system may show worse stutter when an application consumes RAM or VRAM, even if average CPU and GPU utilization look moderate.
CPU-bound situations
Simulation-heavy scenes, large multiplayer sessions and low-resolution settings often leave the GPU with headroom but keep one or more CPU threads busy. Software that wakes frequently, scans windows or encodes on the CPU can reduce the game’s ability to prepare frames. The visible symptom is often a lower low-percentile FPS rather than a dramatic change in the average.
GPU-bound situations
At high resolution or with demanding graphics settings, the GPU may have little spare capacity. Overlay composition, animated widgets and capture paths can then lengthen frame time. A small average-FPS change can still feel significant if it creates repeated spikes.

Memory- or VRAM-bound situations
When available memory is tight, another application can force data movement or eviction. That may appear as intermittent hitching while the average FPS over a long run remains close to the baseline. Record RAM and VRAM use during the test instead of inferring the cause from FPS alone.

Because these limits differ by game and PC, official support pages explain the mechanisms but do not publish one universal percentage loss for “gaming software.” A number measured on one system should not be presented as a prediction for another.
How do I test whether an overlay or recording tool affects FPS?
Use one variable at a time and make both runs as alike as possible. A built-in benchmark is preferable because it follows the same camera path and duration on every pass. If the game has no benchmark, choose a repeatable route through the same demanding area and keep the timing consistent.
- Synchronize the software state. Update the game and graphics driver, then reboot. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance calls for current patches and drivers when investigating optimization problems. Do not change the game, driver, operating-system power mode or graphics settings between the two conditions.
- Choose the scene and warm-up method. Use the same built-in benchmark or route, resolution, frame cap and upscaling or frame-generation settings. Decide in advance whether a short warm-up is part of the run, and apply it identically every time.
- Capture a baseline. Record average FPS, minimum or 1%/other percentile FPS, frame time, GPU utilization, CPU utilization, VRAM or RAM use and temperature. Also note power mode and whether the laptop is plugged in. The exact metrics available depend on the monitor you choose.
- Disable only one item. Turn off the target overlay, recording function or utility while leaving every other setting unchanged. If you are testing a driver overlay, do not simultaneously close the chat client unless that is the variable you intend to test.
- Repeat the identical run. Make at least three passes in each condition. Compare the middle result or a consistent median, and check whether any difference appears in the same part of the route. A one-off spike is weaker evidence than a repeatable change.
- Re-enable the utility and isolate its features. Test the overlay, recording, instant replay and hardware-acceleration options separately. This identifies the feature responsible instead of blaming the entire application.
Keep a small log with the game build, driver version, date, resolution, graphics preset, frame cap, power setting, temperature and each run’s metrics. Without those details, a later patch or thermal change can look like a software effect.
Which tools can show whether software is affecting performance?
Choose the simplest monitor that captures the metric you need. Steam is convenient for a quick check, vendor overlays are easy when their drivers are installed, and NVIDIA FrameView is built for repeatable logging.

Do not assume that a monitor is free of overhead. FrameView is specifically designed for minimal overhead, while the practical cost of other overlays depends on the active panel and hardware. If the counter itself is in doubt, repeat the A/B test with the monitor hidden and use a log produced by the tool rather than a visible panel.
How should I interpret FPS, frame time and latency?
Average FPS measures throughput
Average FPS tells you how many frames were delivered over the measurement interval. It is useful for comparing sustained performance, but it can conceal brief pauses. Two runs with the same average can feel different if one contains several long frame times.
Minimum and percentile FPS expose consistency
Minimum FPS captures the worst observed point and can be dominated by a single outlier. A 1% or other percentile-low value summarizes the slower portion of the run more usefully. Compare the same statistic in both conditions; do not compare a minimum from one run with a percentile from another.
Frame time makes hitches visible
Frame time is the duration used to produce one frame. Lower is better, and a sudden maximum frame time identifies a brief hitch that an average FPS number can hide. Plotting or logging frame time helps you determine whether an overlay causes isolated spikes or a sustained slowdown.
Latency measures responsiveness
Latency can rise even when an overlay reports a high FPS, particularly when a capture or frame-generation path adds work or buffering. NVIDIA FrameView includes PC-latency measurements, and the NVIDIA App can show latency in its performance overlay. Use latency when the question is aiming or input response, not just visual smoothness.

Generated frames are not the same as game-rendered frames
Frame generation can make the displayed FPS substantially different from the base-game rendering rate. Steam’s monitor can distinguish generated frames from actual game frames. Record both when comparing software so that an apparent FPS gain is not mistaken for faster simulation or lower input latency.

Test the overlay separately from the application
Leave the chat or driver application running, but disable only its in-game overlay. Run the same benchmark, then reverse the condition. If the result changes only with the overlay, the application’s background presence is not the primary cause.
Test recording and instant replay as separate features
Run one pass with recording off, one with recording on, and a separate pass with instant replay enabled. Keep resolution, frame rate, encoder and quality settings fixed. A capture feature that causes a drop only while active should not be treated as proof that the entire utility is harmful when idle.

Toggle hardware acceleration one setting at a time and repeat the same route. Record GPU utilization, VRAM and frame-time behavior; a lower average utilization does not rule out short contention bursts.
Remove optimization tools from the diagnostic run
Close automatic tuning, overlay aggregators and RGB or fan-control utilities temporarily. Re-enable them one at a time after the baseline is established. This prevents several small background tasks from being misidentified as a single cause.
What should I do if the test shows a repeatable FPS drop?
- Keep the feature disabled during demanding games if you do not need it.
- Use a less frequent telemetry refresh or a smaller overlay panel when the software offers those controls.
- Turn off instant replay and record clips only when needed.
- Exclude the game from unnecessary browser, launcher or RGB monitoring activity.
- Retest after a game or driver update; a patch can change resource usage.
- Check temperatures and power mode. A hotter second run can throttle hardware and mimic a software regression.
- Report both average FPS and low-percentile or frame-time behavior when asking for support, along with the exact feature that was enabled.
If disabling a utility changes nothing across consistent runs, leave it enabled if its functions are useful. The absence of a measured effect on one game does not guarantee the same result in a different title or graphics setting.
Is disabling every overlay the best solution?
Not necessarily. Overlays can provide useful latency, temperature and recording controls, and a monitor may help diagnose a problem. Disable them temporarily to establish a clean baseline, then keep only the features whose benefit justifies their measured cost on your system.
A practical decision rule is to prioritize repeatability and smoothness over a single headline number. If average FPS is unchanged but frame-time spikes disappear when an overlay is off, the overlay is still affecting playability. Conversely, a tiny, non-repeating difference may be normal run-to-run variation rather than a meaningful penalty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an FPS counter by itself reduce performance?
A simple counter usually does less work than recording, replay or a full animated overlay, but it still renders and polls telemetry. If you suspect the counter, compare a run with the monitor hidden against a run with it visible while keeping the logging method otherwise identical.
Why can an overlay make a game feel worse even when average FPS is unchanged?
Average FPS compresses the entire run into one number and can hide isolated long frames. A utility that wakes periodically may create frame-time spikes or raise latency without moving the average enough to notice in a summary.
Should I compare generated FPS with the number shown by the game?
Only after confirming what each number counts. Frame-generation systems can report displayed frames separately from base-game frames, so use a monitor that distinguishes them and record the base rate when evaluating simulation speed or input response.

What details should I include when asking for help with an FPS drop?
Include the game and build, graphics-driver version, resolution and preset, power mode, temperatures, the exact utility feature tested, and average plus low-percentile FPS or frame-time results. Saying that the change repeated in the same benchmark segment is more useful than reporting a single screenshot.
