Epic says it collects gameplay telemetry and may use information to train machine-learning systems for moderation and safety. That is not the same as saying it trains a general-purpose generative AI on every player’s gameplay. Voice handling depends on the feature: Fortnite voice reporting uses a local rolling capture and uploads audio when a participant submits a report, while Epic’s documentation for Fortnite’s AI-powered LLM characters says their voice audio is not stored or used to train AI models.
The distinctions that matter are what kind of data is involved, which feature is active, whether someone submits a report, and the player’s age and voice settings. Epic’s Privacy Policy was last updated April 22, 2026; feature-specific rules may change, so check Epic’s current policy and Fortnite help pages for the latest wording.

Does Epic use Fortnite gameplay data to train AI?
Epic’s Privacy Policy says it may improve its technologies by training machine-learning technologies to detect and moderate illegal, harmful, toxic, and fraudulent conduct, as well as content that violates its terms or policies. The policy also describes collecting gameplay and application-usage information. Together, these disclosures support the conclusion that Epic may use information for moderation-related machine learning; they do not establish that every gameplay record is fed into a general-purpose generative AI.
That distinction is important: “AI” can refer to different systems and purposes. A model that helps identify harmful or policy-violating conduct is not necessarily the same model—or the same training process—as a conversational character that generates dialogue. Epic’s public wording names moderation and personalization purposes; it does not say that all telemetry is used to train generative models. It also does not promise that gameplay data is never used for any other model-development purpose.

What gameplay information does Epic say it collects?
Epic describes automatically collecting gameplay and application-usage information. Examples include the game used, how long and when it is played, gameplay attempts, progression and results, saved preferences, crash reports, page views, time spent, clicks, and platform type. This is a broad description of collected telemetry, not a published list of fields assigned to a particular machine-learning training set.
Collection and training are separate questions. A privacy policy may describe information Epic collects without specifying that each listed item is used in each disclosed purpose. The public language supports saying that Epic collects gameplay-related telemetry and may use information to train moderation technologies; it does not identify a record-by-record pipeline from every gameplay event to a model.

For ordinary Fortnite voice chat, voice reporting is the key distinction. When reporting is on, the last five minutes of voice chat audio are captured on a rolling basis on the player’s console or PC. Audio older than five minutes is automatically deleted; Epic says it cannot access the audio unless voice reporting is on and a participant submits a voice report.

So “recorded” can be misleading if it suggests Epic continuously receives and archives everyone’s conversations. The documented process is a rolling capture on the player’s device, followed by an upload when someone in the conversation reports it. The capture still matters for privacy, but it is not equivalent to a continuous cloud recording available to Epic.
What happens after someone submits a voice report?
When a participant submits a report, the relevant audio is sent to Epic for review. Epic says submitted audio is automatically deleted after 14 days or after the duration of a sanction, whichever is longer. Appeals and legal obligations can extend retention. The 14-day period is therefore the ordinary post-report auto-deletion window, not a guarantee that every clip is erased on day 14.
That retention rule applies to reported audio, not to a permanent archive of all voice chat. Fortnite says it does not store or provide access to past voice or text conversations; chat is intended for real-time use and is automatically cleared. That statement does not override the separate retention period for audio submitted in a report.

Does Epic send voice to an AI service?
In Fortnite’s LLM Conversations feature, voice audio is securely sent to Google Gemini to generate a response. Epic’s documentation says the player’s voice audio is not stored and will not be used to train AI models. This is a specific statement about that feature’s player voice input, not a blanket description of all Fortnite voice chat or every Epic feature.
The distinction between audio and reports also matters here. For unreported interactions with these AI characters, Epic says player transcripts are not stored or used for training. If a player submits a report, a text log is sent to Epic to help improve model safeguards. The no-training statement for ordinary, unreported use should not be read as saying that a reported conversation produces no record at all.
How do voice reporting and AI-character conversations differ?

Can Epic listen to party chat, and is voice reporting always on?
Epic’s stated access rule is tied to reporting: it says it cannot access Fortnite voice audio unless reporting is on and a participant submits a report. The settings are not identical for every player or channel, however. Adults can choose “Always On” or “Off When Possible,” but public Game Channels keep reporting on. Voice reporting is always on for chats that include an under-18 player.

Accordingly, “Off When Possible” is not a universal off switch, and a private expectation should not be based only on the setting label. Fortnite’s voice-reporting indicator in the sidebar can help show the current state. Muting the microphone or turning voice chat off prevents capture.
How can I reduce or prevent voice capture?
- Check the indicator: Look at the voice-reporting indicator in Fortnite’s sidebar before speaking, particularly after changing modes or channels.
- For an adult account, change the setting: Open Communication → Voice Reporting and select Off When Possible if that is your preference. This does not turn reporting off in public Game Channels.
- To prevent capture: Mute the microphone or set voice chat to Off. These actions prevent capture, rather than merely changing the reporting preference.
- For a child’s account: Review Epic’s parental controls and the voice and written communication controls for AI features. Because reporting is always on in chats that include under-18 players, parents should check the channel and communication settings rather than assuming an adult-style option applies.
What does Epic Online Services say about partner games?
Epic Online Services has a separate trust statement covering services such as voice, achievements, and matchmaking. Epic says data for those game services is processed only to operate the services, and partner data is not shared without explicit authorization. This statement concerns data handling for Epic Online Services and its partners; it should not be treated as a replacement for Fortnite’s feature-specific voice-reporting rules or Epic’s broader Privacy Policy.
For a player, the practical takeaway is to identify the service and feature in use. A game using Epic Online Services for matchmaking is not automatically the same case as a Fortnite voice report, an LLM-character conversation, or moderation-model training. The relevant policy language differs by activity.
What do Epic’s public statements not establish?
Epic’s public materials describe collected telemetry, a moderation-related machine-learning purpose, and specific voice workflows. They do not disclose a detailed inventory showing which gameplay fields enter which model-training dataset, nor do they make a blanket commitment that gameplay information is never used in any other model-development context. The careful reading is neither “Epic trains generative AI on everything” nor “Epic never uses player data for AI.”
- Established: Epic collects gameplay and application-usage telemetry and may train machine-learning technologies for moderation and safety purposes.
- Established for a specific feature: Fortnite LLM Conversations documentation says player voice audio is not stored or used to train AI models; unreported transcripts are not stored or used for training.
- Not established by those statements: That every collected telemetry field is used for moderation training, that all voice features follow the LLM-character rules, or that gameplay data is categorically excluded from every other model-development purpose.
Epic’s Privacy Policy lists April 22, 2026, as its last update. Its Terms of Service show an effective date of September 10, 2026, but the terms date does not replace the more specific policy and feature documentation described above. Since these controls and disclosures can change, check the current Epic Privacy Policy, Fortnite Voice & Text Reporting FAQ, and Fortnite LLM Conversations documentation when making a decision about a particular account or feature.

Does Epic publish which gameplay events go into its AI training data?
Epic describes types of collected gameplay telemetry and a moderation-related machine-learning purpose, but the public wording does not map specific events to specific training datasets. It therefore does not establish, for example, whether a particular match result or click was used to train a particular model.
How long does Epic keep gameplay telemetry?

Can I delete gameplay data Epic has already collected?
