Not instantly, and not necessarily every copy. Deleting a regular ChatGPT conversation removes it from your account view immediately. OpenAI says the chat is then scheduled for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days, unless it has already been de-identified and disassociated from your account or OpenAI must retain it longer for security or legal reasons. An archived chat is not deleted, Temporary Chat follows a different safety-retention rule, and files or data held in connected services may need separate deletion.
Is a deleted ChatGPT chat gone forever?
Deleting a saved conversation is the right way to remove it from your ChatGPT account, but “delete” has two stages. The conversation disappears from the account interface immediately and cannot be restored through ChatGPT. OpenAI’s current Help Center documentation says permanent system deletion is scheduled within 30 days, subject to limited exceptions.

Those exceptions matter. A chat may already have been de-identified and disassociated from your account, or OpenAI may be required to retain information longer for security or legal obligations. Consequently, deletion is a removal request and retention process, not an instant guarantee that every technical copy everywhere vanishes at the moment you click the button.
The rule applies to a regular saved chat. It does not automatically remove a file stored separately in ChatGPT’s Library, erase the original information in a connected service, or manage memories created from the conversation. Each of those areas has its own control.

What happens during the 30-day deletion window?
The 30-day period is OpenAI’s stated target for permanent deletion from its systems after you delete a saved chat. During that period, the chat is no longer visible in your account view, so it should not appear in the normal history sidebar. The documentation does not describe this as a user-accessible quarantine or a countdown that you can monitor.
OpenAI qualifies the 30-day statement in two ways:
- De-identification: information that has already been de-identified and separated from your account may not be tied back to your ChatGPT profile in the same way as a saved conversation.
- Security or legal retention: OpenAI may keep information longer when necessary to meet security requirements or legal obligations.
These qualifications are why a careful privacy answer cannot promise that every copy is destroyed on a precise day. They also explain why deleting a chat is different from merely hiding it in the interface.
What is the difference between delete, archive, Temporary Chat, and account deletion?
These choices change different parts of the data lifecycle. Use the comparison below before choosing an action.

The practical distinction is simple: archive is organization, delete is removal from the account followed by a deletion schedule, Temporary Chat is a separate lower-history mode, and account deletion is a permanent service-level decision.
How do I delete a regular ChatGPT conversation?
Use the conversation’s menu in the ChatGPT history sidebar. The action removes the chat from view immediately, so make sure you have saved anything you are legally or operationally required to keep before confirming.

- Open the ChatGPT chat-history sidebar.
- Find the conversation you want to remove.
- Select the three-dot menu beside that conversation.
- Choose Delete.
- Confirm the deletion when ChatGPT asks.
After confirmation, the conversation should disappear from the account view. OpenAI states that a deleted chat cannot be recovered through ChatGPT. If you need a record for compliance, auditing, or personal reference, export or copy the permitted information before deleting it rather than relying on recovery later.
Does archiving delete a ChatGPT conversation?
No. Archive only removes the conversation from the regular sidebar. The chat remains saved in your account, can remain searchable, and follows the same retention period as other saved chats.
Choose Archive when you want a cleaner sidebar but may need the conversation again. Choose Delete when the goal is to remove the saved chat from your account and start the deletion process. Because archiving does not delete content, it is not a privacy substitute for deletion.
Are Temporary Chats really deleted?
Temporary Chat is designed to keep a conversation out of normal history and out of model-improvement use while it remains temporary. OpenAI says it does not create or update memories during that temporary state. However, OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
That means Temporary Chat reduces the amount of persistent account history, but it is not an instant-erasure mode. The safety-retention period is separate from the deletion schedule for an ordinary saved chat. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular conversation and then follows ordinary account and workspace settings.

Use Temporary Chat before entering sensitive material when you do not need a lasting conversation record. If you later save it for convenience, treat it as a normal saved chat and delete it through the regular conversation menu when it is no longer needed.
Will deleting a chat also delete uploaded files?
Not necessarily. A file that has been saved separately in ChatGPT’s Library is a separate copy. Deleting the conversation does not automatically delete that Library item, so open the Library and remove the file there as a distinct step.
This distinction matters when a conversation included identity documents, spreadsheets, images, source code, or other sensitive uploads. Deleting only the chat can leave the uploaded object available in the account even though the conversation itself has disappeared from history.
What about data from connected apps?
If a conversation used data from a connected application, deleting the ChatGPT conversation removes the data retained within that conversation from the ChatGPT account. It does not delete the original data in the connected service. To remove the source, use the connected service’s own deletion, access, or retention controls.

Does turning off “Improve the model for everyone” delete old chats?
No. The “Improve the model for everyone” control changes how eligible conversations are used going forward; it does not delete, hide, or retroactively remove chats already saved in your account.
These are separate decisions:
- Model-use setting: controls whether applicable conversations may be used to improve OpenAI models under the account’s current setting.
- Chat deletion: removes a selected saved conversation from the account view and starts the documented deletion process.
- File deletion: removes a separately stored Library item.
- Connected-service deletion: removes the original data from the external application using that service’s controls.
Changing the model-use setting is therefore not a substitute for deleting a sensitive conversation.

The public retention rule gives a 30-day target for permanent system deletion, not a promise that every storage layer or legally retained record disappears at the exact click of Delete. OpenAI also documents de-identification and security or legal exceptions. The available rule does not provide a universal, user-visible statement about every possible backup copy or a way to inspect those systems yourself.
The safest interpretation is to separate what is established from what is not: the chat leaves your account view immediately; permanent deletion is scheduled within 30 days; and exceptional retention can apply. Do not treat an empty sidebar as proof that every internal copy has already been destroyed, and do not treat the 30-day target as permission to submit information that you could not tolerate being retained during an exceptional period.
Should I delete my OpenAI account instead?
Account deletion is broader than removing one conversation. OpenAI describes it as permanent and says it prevents use of the associated OpenAI services. Deleted chats are still described as permanently removed within 30 days, subject to de-identification and security or legal exceptions.
Use account deletion only when you intend to stop using the associated services, not as a quick way to clean one conversation. Before starting, review any information you are required to preserve, remove separate Library files, and address originals in connected applications. An account-level request does not change the fact that external services control their own source data.
What privacy checklist should I follow after deleting a chat?
For a sensitive conversation, work through the related storage locations rather than stopping when the sidebar entry disappears.

- Delete the saved conversation from the three-dot menu and confirm.
- Check the Library for files uploaded or generated in connection with that chat, then delete those files separately if they are no longer needed.
- Review connected applications and delete the original data in the external service when appropriate.
- Review Memory controls if the conversation may have created a remembered preference or fact. Current official material does not establish one universal automatic-deletion rule for memories created from chats, so manage them as a separate settings task.
- Check the model-use setting if your concern is future model improvement; changing it does not remove existing chats.
- Use Temporary Chat in future for conversations that should not enter normal history, while remembering that safety retention of up to 30 days may still apply.
This checklist covers the account conversation, separately stored files, external originals, memories, and model-use preferences—the places where a single Delete action does not have the same effect.
What is the bottom line on “erase it everywhere”?
Deleting a regular ChatGPT chat removes it from your account view immediately and places it on a schedule for permanent deletion within 30 days. It is not the same as instant destruction of every copy: de-identification and security or legal obligations can change what is retained, while archives, Library files, memories, and connected-app originals follow separate rules. For the strongest practical cleanup, delete the conversation, remove related Library files, handle external originals in their own services, and review Memory and model-use settings independently.

Can I recover a ChatGPT chat after deleting it by contacting Support?

Does deleting a conversation remove memories made from it?
