On iPhones whose Main camera sets aperture automatically, the Portrait-mode “Aperture” slider changes the computational background-blur effect, not the lens opening. Apple documents a model-specific exception: iPhone 18 Pro models offer manual aperture settings in several camera modes. Whether a control changes optical aperture or simulated blur therefore depends on the iPhone, app, and mode.
What the iPhone’s Aperture slider changes
In Portrait mode, Apple calls the blur adjustment Depth Control. Moving its slider changes how much blur is rendered around the subject; it does not show that a physical iris has moved. Apple describes Portrait mode as keeping the subject sharp while blurring foreground and background. A physical aperture is the opening in a lens. Changing it can affect both exposure and optical depth of field: a wider opening (lower f-number) generally produces less depth of field, while a narrower opening (higher f-number) generally keeps more of the scene in focus. That optical explanation is not proof that a particular iPhone control changes the lens. Apple says the Main camera sets aperture automatically on generally documented iPhone models; the Portrait slider is a software depth effect.
When iPhone changes depth information or blur
Portrait mode
Portrait mode creates a depth-of-field look by keeping a chosen subject sharp and blurring other areas. On supported iPhones, you can adjust the effect while composing with Depth Control, or change it later in Photos on an eligible Portrait photo. Apple also documents changing the focus point for Portrait photos on iPhone 13 or later. Apple’s Portrait mode support page, published March 5, 2025, describes supported Portrait capabilities and depth information.

Photo mode with the Depth control
In some supported Photo-mode situations, a Depth button appears. When it does, the iPhone captures depth information so a Portrait effect can be applied afterward. This is not a feature to assume is available for every photo or every iPhone. Check for the control on the particular device and scene; its presence indicates depth data for a later effect, not a manually changed lens aperture. Apple’s guide describes the control and its supported use.
Cinematic mode
Cinematic mode applies a depth-of-field effect and can track or transition focus between subjects. Supported models expose an Aperture adjustment, and users can adjust focus while recording or after capture. Treat the Aperture adjustment here as control over the mode’s depth effect unless the specific iPhone and camera app document manual physical aperture control. Apple’s Cinematic mode guide describes these effects and controls.

The documented manual-aperture exception
Apple’s advanced camera guidance says iPhone 18 Pro models support manual aperture selection in Photo, Video, Cinematic, Slo-mo, and Time-Lapse modes, unlike iPhones whose Main camera aperture is automatic. That exception is model- and mode-specific; it should not be generalized to older iPhones, other camera apps, or every lens on a device. See Apple’s advanced camera tools guide.

How to adjust the effect
While composing a Portrait or supported Photo-mode shot
- Open Camera and select Portrait, or use a supported Photo-mode situation where the Depth control is available.
- Open the camera controls and move the Depth Control slider to change the amount of rendered background blur. Exact labels and availability vary by model and mode.
- For a supported iPhone 18 Pro manual-aperture control, use the documented camera mode and control for that model; do not treat the Portrait Depth Control slider as evidence of a physical aperture change.
After taking a photo
- Open an eligible Portrait photo in Photos.
- Use Depth Control to adjust the blur. On supported Portrait photos, Photos can also let you change the focus point.
For Cinematic video
On a supported model, adjust the Aperture value in Cinematic mode before recording, and use the available focus controls during or after recording. This controls the Cinematic depth effect; distinguish it from physical aperture unless the specific model and camera app document manual aperture.

These controls should not be ranked by image quality based on their names alone: they change different things, and the available evidence establishes their operation, not a comparative quality result.
