That is different from launching a rocket from Canadian territory: under Transport Canada’s current interim program, the launch operator—not simply the satellite customer—seeks authorization for the launch. In either case, a Canadian satellite operator must separately plan for applicable ISED spectrum licensing and debris-mitigation requirements. This guide reflects information current to October 4, 2026.
First clarify what “launched from Canada” means
The phrase can refer to the satellite’s owner or builder, the location of the rocket launch, or Canada’s longer-term goal of developing domestic launch capability. These are not interchangeable situations.

| What you mean | Who handles the launch | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| A Canadian-owned or Canadian-built satellite launching abroad | You contract with a foreign launch provider or an integrator arranging a launch service. | Check applicable Canadian satellite spectrum licensing and operating obligations with ISED, in addition to the launch contract. |
| A rocket launching from Canadian territory | The launch operator applies to Transport Canada for ministerial authorization under the interim commercial space launch program. | The operator must address launch safety and other public-interest considerations, and demonstrate that the proposed site meets requirements. |
| A future Canadian sovereign launch service | Availability depends on an actual provider, mission, and bookable terms. | The Canadian Space Launch Act was introduced on April 21, 2026 as a policy and legislative development. Its announcement is not evidence that a commercial orbital launch from Canada can currently be booked. |
Transport Canada’s published process concerns the launch operator and launch activity, not a blanket permit that every payload owner must obtain. The department says privately owned operators run spaceports; it does not license the spaceport itself, but the operator must show that the selected site meets requirements. Transport Canada coordinates with federal partners and consults the province or territory where the proposed site is located. The Canadian Space Agency describes itself as one of 15 federal departments and agencies supporting the authorization process.

In a rideshare, multiple spacecraft share a launch. A secondary payload generally has to fit the primary mission or the launch’s shared manifest. NASA distinguishes these arrangements from dedicated rideshare launches made up of small satellites: when there is a primary spacecraft, its mission largely determines the orbit, schedule, and operations. That can make rideshare less flexible than a dedicated launch, even when the smaller payload is technically compatible.

Buy directly or work through an integrator
- Direct with a provider: SpaceX provides a Satellite Rideshare interface for entering payload and orbit details. Treat availability, mission dates, requirements, and price as live commercial terms to confirm with the provider; a web interface alone does not establish an available slot or a current quote.
- Through a broker or integrator: An integrator may coordinate mission selection, compatibility analysis, physical integration, environmental testing, and deployment. Exolaunch describes a turnkey service example covering those kinds of activities. Confirm the exact scope and current capacity for the mission you are considering; that service example does not establish current availability.
Compare the mission against your spacecraft
| Decision factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Orbit | Does the mission reach the required altitude, inclination, and orbit type? If not, is an orbital transfer vehicle or another delivery step available and included? |
| Schedule | What launch window can you accept, how much delay is tolerable, and how much control will you have over timing? A shared mission is scheduled around the overall manifest and provider plan. |
| Payload fit | Do the spacecraft’s mass, dimensions, mechanical interface, deployment method, vibration limits, and other environmental constraints fit the mission? Ask who performs compatibility analysis and physical integration. |
| Services | Is the offer only a launch slot, or does it include mission management, engineering, testing, a deployer, or orbital delivery support? |
| Commercial terms | Request a current written, all-in quotation. Check included services, payment milestones, insurance and liability provisions, rescheduling terms, and remedies. The sources cited here do not establish a current mission-specific price. |
| Compliance and data | What licensing information, technical documents, and approvals must your team provide before launch? Who will supply final orbit data, and when? |
Canadian approvals are separate from launch procurement
For a rocket launching in Canada
Transport Canada’s interim commercial space launch authorization process applies to the operator of an uncrewed commercial rocket launching from Canadian territory. The agency considers public interest and safety, including aviation safety and factors such as environmental, national-security, air-traffic, and marine-traffic concerns. The launch operator should begin with Transport Canada’s pre-application consultation and follow the current application requirements. A payload customer buying a foreign rideshare should not confuse that operator process with the satellite’s own Canadian obligations.
Transport Canada’s 2026 application requirements say the department aims to convene an information session within 21 business days after receiving a complete notice of intent. That is a target for an information session, not a promise of an end-to-end authorization timeline.

For a Canadian satellite using spectrum
ISED regulates satellite spectrum use. Its April 2026 CPC-2-6-02, Issue 7, describes the application process for a space-station spectrum licence and requires satellite-specific information. That licence is distinct from the commercial agreement that gets the spacecraft to orbit. For a foreign-licensed satellite intended for use in Canada, ISED’s CPC-2-6-04 describes a separate foreign-satellite approval route.
For a rideshare with an uncertain final orbit
ISED recognizes that a rideshare customer may not know the exact insertion orbit before launch. Its current procedure requires an environmental assessment of the expected operating orbit; if the final orbit differs, the operator must submit an updated assessment. The procedure also addresses debris mitigation and conjunction-risk planning, so orbit uncertainty needs a compliance plan rather than an assumption that the initially expected orbit will be final.

ISED’s April 2026 debris decision sets controlled-re-entry terms for NGSO satellites in low Earth orbit: re-entry as soon as practicable and no later than five years after the end of operational life, with a success rate of at least 90% for an individual satellite. This is a licensing constraint to assess during spacecraft and mission design, not a guarantee that every satellite will deorbit within that period.
A practical path from mission concept to launch
- Write down the mission envelope. Specify purpose, spacecraft mass and dimensions, target orbit, acceptable launch window, deployment precision, and expected operational lifetime.
- Resolve the geography. Decide whether “from Canada” means Canadian ownership or manufacture, or a rocket launch from Canadian territory. If the rocket will launch in Canada, the launch operator must engage Transport Canada; if your satellite launches abroad, focus on provider selection and the satellite’s applicable Canadian approvals.
- Request mission-specific proposals. Ask providers and suitable integrators for current missions, orbit, payload envelope, schedule, interface specifications, included services, and written all-in terms. Evaluate actual orbit and timing fit, not just a headline launch date.
- Start licensing and debris planning early. Work through the relevant ISED process and account for the expected-orbit environmental assessment. Define how the team will update it if final insertion differs.
- Agree on technical and compliance handoffs. Establish who supplies interface documentation, environmental qualification evidence, required licensing data, and post-launch orbital information, with deadlines for each.
What determines the cost?
There is no reliable universal price in the available source material for a current launch slot. Cost depends on the mission and contract, including orbit, payload characteristics, schedule, and whether services such as integration, testing, deployment, or orbital delivery support are included. Ask for a current written quotation that identifies included work, exclusions, payment milestones, liability terms, and rescheduling conditions. Do not treat a historical service example or an online intake form as a current price.
