Ink is liquid and is used by inkjet printers; toner is a fine powder used by laser printers. They work in different machines and cannot be swapped. Choose between them based on what you print, how often you print, and the cost of supplies for the exact printer model—not on a blanket claim that one technology is always cheaper.
How are ink and toner different?
An inkjet printer ejects tiny drops of liquid ink through printhead nozzles onto paper. Depending on the printer and cartridge, that ink may be dye- or pigment-based. Inkjet printers are often a good fit for photographs, graphics, and a range of paper types because they can blend colors smoothly. A laser printer uses an electrostatic process: a laser forms an image on a drum, toner powder adheres to that image and transfers to the page, and heat fuses it to the paper. Toner is not liquid ink, so it does not dry out in the same way an ink cartridge can.
Which should you choose for your printing?

These are starting points, not universal rules. HP and Canon both describe inkjet as a common choice for graphics or photos and laser as a common choice for document printing or higher-volume use. The best fit depends on the specific printer and your needs.

How to compare the real cost
Upfront price alone does not tell you which printer will cost less over time. Compare the purchase price of each candidate printer with the supplies you expect to buy during your ownership period. Check the correct black and color supplies, their declared page yields, and your likely print volume and mix of pages. Do not assume that toner is always cheaper, or that ink is always cheaper for color printing.
Page yield is an estimate based on a test method, not a promise about your personal results. HP says its laser cartridge yield figures use ISO/IEC 19752 and ISO/IEC 19798 methods; it also notes that some printers include introductory toner cartridges with lower yields than replacement cartridges. For color yield, HP describes ISO 19758 composite reporting. Brother notes that actual yield can vary with environment, settings, software, and printing habits. Buy the supply that matches your printer
Ink and toner are not interchangeable. Ink cartridges are for compatible inkjet printers; toner cartridges are for compatible laser printers. Before buying, check the printer’s exact model and the manufacturer’s cartridge number. A generic description such as “printer cartridge” is not enough to confirm compatibility. Liquid ink can dry out after prolonged non-use; toner does not have the same drying risk. The sources do not establish a universal number of days or weeks that an inkjet can safely sit idle, so avoid relying on a fixed interval. If you print rarely, weigh the possible ink-drying concern against the printer’s purchase price and the maintenance requirements of the particular model.
