Yes—AI mortgage software can shorten specific processing tasks, and some lenders and providers report faster loan setup, review, or mortgage-offer workflows. But the reported results measure different parts of the process, and most recent figures come from vendor or provider case studies. They do not establish a reliable, industry-wide reduction in the time from application to closing.
The practical question is not simply whether a system uses AI. It is which steps it handles, how much work still needs human review, and whether the lender measures the same start and end points before and after implementation.

AI is most likely to reduce time spent handling information-heavy tasks: sorting documents, extracting data, checking whether a file is complete, reconciling details across documents, and preparing materials for review. These tasks can delay a file when staff must repeat manual checks or move information between documents and systems.
In the documented workflows, software classifies documents, extracts and compares information, applies configurable validation rules, and flags discrepancies or exceptions. A person can then review the cases that need judgment or correction. This is different from saying that an AI system independently approves a mortgage or completes the entire underwriting process.

Document intake and file preparation
Genpact describes custom AI agents used by a major UK retail bank to standardize and classify application documents, check completeness, extract and verify information, and prepare affordability calculations. The reported outcome was 30% faster mortgage offer times. That figure concerns lead time to an offer in the provider’s case study; it should not be read as a 30% reduction in the full application-to-close timeline.
Review, reconciliation, and exception handling
An Amazon Web Services case study says Stellar Innovations estimates a simple manual mortgage review process at scale can be reduced by approximately 40%, with 90% fewer manual touchpoints. The described CLARAA workflow classifies files, extracts and reconciles data, validates it against rules, and uses confidence scoring and human review for exceptions. The figures are customer estimates reported in a case study, not an independently established result for all lenders.
Title data and servicing audits
Coforge reports up to 40% lower processing time in a mortgage title-reporting workflow and up to 87% accuracy for title-data extraction. Its example involves extracting title data from unstructured public-record documents and human validation. Those figures describe a provider-reported workflow, not every title search or the whole loan process.
Infosys reports that loan-acquisition audit time in a mortgage-servicer case study fell from 58 minutes to 18 minutes. The approach combined document-centric automation, analytics, computer vision, machine learning, natural-language processing, and other methods. Because multiple techniques were involved, the case does not isolate how much of the change came from AI alone.

How much time does AI mortgage software save?
There is no single defensible percentage for how much AI reduces mortgage processing time. The available examples use different clocks and scopes, so they should be read as separate results rather than combined into an average.
| Source and reported workflow | Reported result | What the figure measures |
|---|---|---|
| Blend, early production analysis dated August 20, 2026 | Loan-cycle times shortened by 2 to 4 days; an average of 4.5 hours of fulfillment tasks automated per loan | Blend compared 24 lender and loan-type cohorts with their own pre-Autopilot performance, across more than 175,000 loans. Blend reported the results; they are not an independent causal estimate. |
| Stellar Innovations using CLARAA on AWS | Approximately 40% less mortgage review time and 90% fewer manual touchpoints | Customer estimate for a simple manual review process at scale, as reported in an AWS case study. The publication date is not shown in the available source information. |
| PGS Home Loans using Addy AI with Arive | Loan setup changed from 3–4 hours per file to about 45 minutes | Vendor-published customer account dated March 11, 2026; it measures loan setup, not total time to close. |
| Major UK retail bank in a Genpact case study | 30% faster mortgage offer times | Provider-reported lead time to offer for a custom AI-agent workflow. The publication date is not shown in the available source information. |
| Technology-based lenders in a Federal Reserve Bank of New York study | About 20% faster application processing | Historical U.S. comparison published in 2018. It concerns technology-based lenders generally, not present-day AI software specifically. |
| Coforge mortgage title-reporting workflow | Up to 40% lower processing time; up to 87% title-data extraction accuracy | Provider-reported figures for one title-reporting workflow. The publication date is not shown in the available source information. |
| Mortgage-servicer loan-acquisition audit in an Infosys case study | Audit time fell from 58 minutes to 18 minutes | Provider-reported result using several automation and analytics methods, not an isolated AI test. The publication date is not shown in the available source information. |
These measurements are not interchangeable. Review duration, staff touchpoints, setup time, title-report preparation, audit time, lead time to offer, and loan-cycle time describe different work. Even a faster review or offer does not establish that a borrower will close sooner: later steps, lender queues, borrower responses, and other parts of the process may remain outside the software’s control.

How strong is the evidence that AI causes the time savings?
The recent numerical examples are mostly vendor or provider case studies and announcements. They show that reductions have been reported in particular deployments, but they do not establish a predictable effect for another lender. A result can reflect the software, workflow redesign, staffing changes, the types of loans selected, or the way time was measured.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York offers independent historical evidence that technology-enabled lending was associated with faster processing. In a 2018 study using U.S. mortgage application and origination data, Fuster, Plosser, Schnabl, and Vickery found that technology-based lenders processed applications about 20% faster than other lenders after controlling for loan, borrower, and geographic characteristics. That is useful context, but the study did not isolate modern AI software and cannot be used as a direct estimate of what a current AI product will achieve.

Blend’s August 20, 2026 analysis is more recent and reports a sizable loan-cycle change across many loans and cohorts. However, it remains Blend’s own production analysis comparing cohorts against their pre-Autopilot performance. It is not independent proof that the software alone caused the change, or that another lender should expect the same number.
Accordingly, the best-supported conclusion is bounded: AI can accelerate defined processing tasks, and deployments have reported improvements at several stages. The available evidence does not provide an independently verified, current, industry-wide causal percentage for AI’s effect on end-to-end time to close.

Ask each vendor to measure the same workflow with the same clock, population, and treatment of exceptions. A comparison is not meaningful if one system reports staff minutes on complete files while another reports elapsed days from application to offer.
Define the clock and workload
- Choose exact start and end points. Examples include application receipt to initial review, complete-file status to underwriting decision, or application to offer. Track application-to-close separately if the business question is borrower time to closing.
- Separate elapsed time from labor time. A task may take fewer staff minutes without reducing the calendar time a file waits in a queue.
- Specify the file population. Record whether the measure includes all applications, only complete files, or a particular loan type. A change in the mix of loans can change the result.
- Use a clear baseline. Compare before and after on a defined period, or use comparable cohorts. Record operational changes during the same period so that a workflow redesign or staffing change is not attributed automatically to AI.
- Choose a useful summary. Ask whether the result is an average or median, and examine the distribution as well as the headline figure. A small number of unusually slow files can affect an average.
Check the workflow and exceptions
- List the tasks in scope. Confirm whether the product handles intake, classification, extraction, completeness checks, validation, underwriting preparation, or another specific step. Do not assume a system covers the full mortgage journey.
- Measure exception handling. Find out what triggers escalation, how often staff must correct extracted information, and how much time exception cases take. A fast routine path can coexist with a slow or labor-intensive exception path.
- Clarify human responsibilities. Identify which decisions and checks remain with qualified staff. The cited examples include human review or validation; automated file preparation is not the same as automated approval.
- Track quality alongside speed. Compare completeness, correction work, and review outcomes as well as time. Faster handling is not a useful improvement if errors create additional downstream work.
Assess integration and evidence
- Check fit with current systems. Establish how documents and extracted information move into the lender’s loan origination system and existing queues, and what implementation work is required.
- Ask for deployment-specific evidence. Request the study period, loan and lender context, number and types of files, baseline definition, and whether the result was independently assessed. Treat a provider case study as a reported example rather than a guarantee.
- Include implementation costs and operational effort. Measure the staff time and process changes needed to introduce and maintain the system, not just the time saved after it is running.
Fannie Mae’s Q3 2023 mortgage-lender survey material identifies integration complexity, lack of a proven record of success, and high costs as major AI/ML adoption challenges. Those survey findings frame issues a lender should examine; they do not prove that every lender faces the same obstacles today.

What should borrowers expect from AI-assisted processing?
A lender may use AI to organize or check documents without changing every step a borrower experiences. Faster internal preparation could help a file move through a particular queue, but the reported case studies do not establish that AI will make every borrower close sooner or remove the need to provide requested information.
For a borrower, the more useful questions are whether the lender has a clear document checklist, how it communicates missing or inconsistent information, and whether a person can address an unusual case. The existence of AI in a lender’s workflow by itself does not establish the expected timing of an individual application.

Is AI mortgage software worth adopting for a lender?
It may be worth evaluating when a lender has a defined, repetitive bottleneck that involves substantial document handling and can be measured before and after deployment. A system that reduces setup or review effort can have operational value even if it does not shorten the entire loan cycle by the same amount.
Adoption is harder to justify when the desired outcome is vague, existing systems do not connect cleanly, exception handling is unknown, or a claimed time saving cannot be measured against a credible baseline. The strongest decision is based on a pilot or deployment measurement tied to the lender’s own workflow, with speed, quality, human effort, and integration considered together—not a headline percentage borrowed from another organization.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does AI mortgage software make loan approvals automatic?
The cited workflows describe document handling, verification, affordability preparation, and exception flagging; they do not establish that the systems make every approval decision. A lender should identify which decisions remain with its staff rather than infer that from the term “AI.”
Can AI mortgage processing reduce the documents I need to submit?
The examples describe organizing and checking documents a lender receives, not eliminating a borrower’s documentation requirements. What a borrower must provide depends on the lender and application.
How can a lender tell whether a faster process is also accurate?
Measure correction work, incomplete or inconsistent files, and the outcomes of human review alongside time. The Coforge title-reporting example reports extraction accuracy, but that figure applies to its specific workflow and should not be treated as a general benchmark.
Does the 2018 Federal Reserve study measure AI mortgage software?
No. It compared technology-based lenders with other lenders and found about 20% faster application processing after controls, but it did not isolate AI. Its finding is historical evidence about technology-enabled lending, not a product estimate for current AI tools.
