In practice, the console processes supported game sound and sends audio to your left and right ears. Sony says a compatible stereo headset offers the best 3D-audio experience because it can deliver sound to each ear separately. That means conventional stereo headphones may be all you need; a “3D,” “surround,” or “spatial audio” label on a headset is not a PS5 requirement.
Those labels can describe a headset’s own processing or marketing, but they do not establish that a particular model will work with PS5. Compatibility depends first on the connection and the specific model. Nor does a headset label guarantee that every game will produce the same spatial effect.

Will any headphones work with PS5 3D audio?

Is the PULSE 3D headset required?
No. Sony’s PULSE 3D Wireless Headset is an official option engineered to take advantage of PS5 3D Audio, but it is not required for Tempest processing. Sony’s manual also qualifies its 3D-audio support: the game must support 3D audio.
PULSE 3D may suit someone who wants a PS5-focused wireless setup and controls. It is one compatible choice among many; a PS5-compatible stereo headset can also receive the console’s processed audio. Choose based on the connection, fit, microphone and controls you want—not on the idea that only a headset with “3D” in its name can provide the feature.

These figures give a reference point, but weight and dimensions alone do not tell you whether a headset will feel comfortable. Fit, clamp pressure, ear-pad shape and how long you plan to wear it still matter.
What should you check before buying a PS5 headset?
Start with the connection, then compare the day-to-day features you will actually use. A headset can be compatible with 3D audio and still be a poor fit if its microphone, controls, battery, comfort or cross-device support does not suit you.

1. Confirm the exact PS5 connection
- USB: Confirm that the exact headset model supports PS5 over USB.
- Wireless: Check whether the included USB wireless adapter or transmitter supports PS5. Do not infer this from the word “wireless” or from phone Bluetooth support.
- Wired analog: Confirm that the headset can connect through the DualSense 3.5 mm jack.
- Already-owned headphones: Test the connection you plan to use before replacing them.
Connection details can vary among models within the same product line. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact version and the adapter included in the box, especially if the listing describes a different console or a newer revision.
2. Check microphone and chat controls
Decide whether you need a built-in microphone and how you want to mute it or balance game and chat audio. The comparison points to check are microphone quality, mute controls, and game/chat controls. A headset can deliver game audio without being the right choice for multiplayer chat, so consider communication separately from 3D-audio support.

Look for details that affect longer sessions: headset weight, clamp fit and comfort. If possible, try the headset on or check the return terms before committing. Published weight is useful for comparing models, but it cannot account for head shape, pressure points or personal comfort.

5. Consider your other devices
If you also want to use the headset with a PC, mobile device or another console, verify support for each one separately. A connection that works on one device does not prove that the same headset or adapter will work with PS5, and PS5 compatibility does not by itself establish cross-device support.
6. Compare price and warranty
Compare the current price and warranty for the exact model and region you are buying in. These can differ by retailer, location and product version; the available specifications do not establish a universal current price or warranty period. Do not pay extra for a 3D-audio label unless the headset also offers features you value.

Connect a compatible headset, select it as the output device, and review the console’s headphone settings. Sony’s support instructions place output-device and headphone options under Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Connect the headset using its supported PS5 connection: compatible USB, a supported USB wireless adapter, or the DualSense controller’s 3.5 mm jack.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Choose the headset as the output device and review the available headphone settings.
- Check the game’s own audio options and whether that title supports 3D audio. The audible effect depends on the title and its implementation.
- If using a supported PULSE model, open the Sound control-center menu to access its 3D-audio and equalizer controls where available.
Menu labels and available controls can vary with system software and the connected device. If the headset does not appear as an output choice, recheck its connection and model-specific PS5 support before troubleshooting the game’s audio settings.

Why might 3D audio sound different from one game to another?
PS5 3D audio is not a uniform effect that every game implements identically. Sony says results vary by title and developer optimization, and the PULSE 3D manual says 3D audio works when the game supports it.
So a compatible headset cannot make an unsupported game produce the same spatial cues as a title built to use 3D audio. Differences in how games use positioning are expected; they do not necessarily mean the headset is defective. Check the individual game’s audio support and settings before judging the headset on one title.
Which type of PS5 headset should you buy?
