For most people using Windows 10 or Windows 11 at home, Microsoft Defender is enough antivirus protection when it is enabled, updated and paired with careful downloading and browsing. It is built into Windows, supplies the default real-time protection when no other antivirus provider is active, and Microsoft says you do not need a second real-time antivirus product. Independent testing supports that baseline: Defender scored 17.5 out of 18 in AV-TEST’s August 2026 Windows 11 home-user test.
A separate security suite can still make sense if your household needs features Defender does not bundle, such as multi-device management, parental controls, identity monitoring or hands-on technical support. The decision is therefore less about buying the highest antivirus score and more about whether those additional services justify another subscription and another company handling your security data.

Is Microsoft Defender enough for Windows 10 and Windows 11?
For a typical home user, yes. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows 10 and Windows 11 and becomes the default real-time antivirus when no other provider is active. Microsoft describes its security software as protection against malware, spyware, adware and other unwanted software, and says users do not need another real-time antivirus or antispyware product.
That answer assumes three conditions: Defender’s real-time protection is on, Windows and Defender intelligence updates are current, and you do not routinely install unknown software or open suspicious links. Antivirus reduces risk; it cannot make an unsafe download trustworthy or guarantee that every future threat will be blocked.

What exactly does Microsoft Defender provide?
Defender is the antivirus engine. The Windows Security app is the dashboard where you view its status, change settings and start scans. When Defender is the active provider, it monitors files and programs as they run, checks downloads and can scan on demand.
Real-time protection
Real-time protection checks activity as it happens instead of waiting for a manual scan. If you disable it without another security product taking over, Microsoft warns that the device is vulnerable to malware. A second always-on antivirus engine is not a safety upgrade: Microsoft says multiple real-time products can affect performance and cause conflicts.

Cloud-delivered protection and sample submission
Windows Security includes cloud-delivered protection and automatic sample submission settings. Microsoft recommends leaving both enabled for optimal protection, because they allow newer detections and suspicious files to be assessed using Microsoft’s cloud service. Organizations with strict privacy or regulatory requirements should review the applicable Windows privacy and administrative policies before enabling automatic submission on managed machines.
Updates and manual scans
Defender’s detection intelligence is updated separately from major Windows releases. Keep Windows Update running and allow Defender intelligence updates to install. You can also scan a particular item without opening it: in File Explorer, right-click the file or folder and choose Scan with Microsoft Defender.
How well does Defender detect current malware?
Independent laboratory results place Defender near the top of the Windows 11 consumer field, but every score describes a particular version and test window rather than a permanent guarantee.

The September zero-day result means Defender blocked 99.3% of the previously unseen samples used in that month’s test; October’s result was 100%. Those figures are not a promise that every new attack will be stopped, and they should not be interpreted as a lifetime product rating. Test conditions, sample sets and product versions change.
How can I check whether Defender is actually protecting my PC?
Use Windows Security rather than guessing from a taskbar icon. The following check works on current Windows 10 and Windows 11 installations, although wording can vary slightly by edition or region.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Manage providers. Under Antivirus, identify which provider is active. If Defender is active, its status and controls are shown there.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, open Virus & threat protection settings and confirm Real-time protection is on.
- In the same settings area, review Cloud-delivered protection and Automatic sample submission. Microsoft recommends enabling them for optimal protection.
- Install pending Windows and Defender intelligence updates, then restart if Windows requests it.
To check one download before opening it, right-click the file in File Explorer and select Scan with Microsoft Defender. For a broader check, start a quick or full scan from the Virus & threat protection page and leave the PC powered on until it completes.
When is a third-party antivirus suite worth considering?
Choose another suite for a specific capability or service, not simply because Windows includes Defender. A third-party product is most defensible when it solves a requirement for several devices or for people who need guided support.

A bundled virtual private network can improve connection privacy, but it is not malware protection and should not be treated as a replacement for antivirus. Likewise, an identity-monitoring alert does not prevent an infected attachment from running.

Should I install two antivirus programs for extra protection?
No. Keep one real-time antivirus provider active. Microsoft says running more than one real-time security product can reduce performance, duplicate scans and create conflicts over which program should quarantine a file.
If you decide to switch, uninstall the old product using its own removal process, restart if requested, and then check Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers. Confirm that exactly one antivirus provider reports active real-time protection. Some products leave background components behind after a normal uninstall; if Windows still shows the old provider, use that vendor’s official cleanup utility and check the status again.
What settings and habits make Defender more effective?
Defender works best as one layer in a broader security routine. Use this checklist:
- Install Windows updates and Defender intelligence updates promptly rather than postponing them indefinitely.
- Leave Real-time protection, Cloud-delivered protection and Automatic sample submission enabled unless an administrator has a documented reason to change them.
- Download applications from the developer or a reputable store, and decline unexpected installers offered by advertisements or pop-ups.
- Keep your browser current and treat unsolicited links, attachments and macro-enabled documents as untrusted until verified.
- Use a strong, unique password for every important account and turn on multifactor authentication where available.
- Back up irreplaceable files so a destructive infection, hardware failure or mistaken deletion does not become permanent data loss.
- Use a manual Defender scan when a file behaves unexpectedly or before opening an item from removable media.
These habits address risks antivirus cannot fully solve, including stolen credentials, fraudulent login pages and deliberate social engineering. A clean Defender status does not mean an account protected by a reused password is safe.

Is the answer different on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
The baseline conclusion is the same: Defender is built into both versions and is the default real-time protection when no other antivirus provider is active. Menus and wording can differ slightly by release, edition and region, so follow the labels shown in your Windows Security app.

Do not assume that a machine is protected simply because it runs Windows. The relevant checks are the active provider, Real-time protection status, update status and your download behavior. Features and availability can vary by region, and a workplace-managed computer may have policies that hide or control some settings.

First, identify whether another antivirus provider is active. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage providers; a third-party provider may have taken over real-time scanning, which is expected behavior when it is installed and enabled.
If no provider is active, remove any abandoned security software, restart the PC, install pending Windows updates and return to the Virus & threat protection settings page. Turn Real-time protection back on and verify Cloud-delivered protection and Automatic sample submission. If a work or school administrator controls the device, those settings may be enforced or unavailable; contact that administrator rather than repeatedly changing them.

Persistent errors, failed updates or an unexplained provider entry indicate a configuration problem that may require the official support process for your Windows edition or the installed security product.
How should I compare Defender with a paid product?
Use recent independent protection, performance and usability results as a starting point, then evaluate the services you would actually use. Check how many devices and operating systems a license covers, what happens at renewal, whether support is included and what diagnostic or identity data the provider collects.
Test on your own workload when a trial is available: normal browsing, large downloads, gaming, video calls and the applications you rely on. Watch for slow launches, repeated alerts or false positives. Before the trial ends, decide which single provider will remain active and remove the other one completely.
There is no universal requirement for a paid antivirus subscription, and the available evidence does not establish that every household benefits from one. For many Windows users, paying only becomes rational when the additional management, family, identity or support features solve a real problem that Defender does not address.

Does Microsoft Defender turn itself off when I install another antivirus?
Windows normally gives real-time control to the other registered provider so two engines do not run simultaneously. Check Windows Security’s Manage providers page after installation; do not assume the hand-off occurred until one provider is clearly marked active.
Can I use Defender for work or school computers?
A managed organization may configure, restrict or replace Defender through administrative policies. On those devices, follow the organization’s security policy and contact its administrator if the Windows Security controls are unavailable or show conflicting providers.
Do Defender test scores prove my computer cannot be infected?
No. AV-TEST results measure a particular Defender version against a defined sample set during a defined period. They are useful evidence of capability, but phishing, stolen passwords, unsafe behavior and future threats can still compromise a well-scored product.
What should a family check before paying for an antivirus subscription?
List the devices and operating systems that need coverage, then decide whether you truly need centralized parental controls, identity monitoring or human support. Read the privacy policy and renewal terms, and make sure the product can be removed cleanly so only one real-time engine remains.
