No—a 75-inch TV does not automatically need a soundbar. Add one if the built-in speakers fall short of the dialogue clarity, bass, sound width, or immersion you want. Screen size matters more for checking fit and planning your listening distance than for deciding whether an audio upgrade is necessary.
What does a 75-inch TV change about choosing a soundbar?
The TV’s 75-inch measurement is the diagonal of its screen, not the width of the stand or the space available for a speaker. A larger screen can make a compact soundbar look visually small, but matching the soundbar’s width to the TV is not a requirement for good sound. The practical questions are whether the bar fits, whether its speakers can operate unobstructed, and whether it addresses a real shortcoming in your TV’s audio.

Think about what you want to improve before shopping:
- Dialogue: Consider an upgrade if voices are difficult to follow at your usual listening level.
- Bass: Look at a system with a subwoofer if you want more low-frequency impact.
- Width or surround: A wider presentation or separate rear speakers may better suit films and games.
- Simplicity: A basic bar can be a more straightforward choice if you primarily watch news or everyday TV and do not need surround effects.
If the TV already sounds clear and satisfying in your room, its screen size alone is not a reason to buy another speaker.

What size soundbar should you get for a 75-inch TV?
Use published size guidance as a starting point, then check the dimensions of the specific bar and the space where it will sit. Samsung Australia’s current buying guide recommends a soundbar length of 123–148 cm for TVs 75 inches and above; that is Samsung’s pairing guidance, not a universal fit rule for every make of television or soundbar.
A bar does not have to span the full width of the screen. Fit, unobstructed sound, and the look you prefer matter more than lining up the ends of the bar with the edges of the TV. Before ordering, measure the actual stand and the available position rather than estimating from the screen diagonal.
Measure the complete installation
- Stand width and leg position: Confirm the bar has a stable place to rest, including if the TV’s feet sit near the edges.
- Available depth: Check how much room there is in front of the screen and whether the bar would overhang the stand.
- Bar height: Compare it with the clearance below the screen so the picture and any important sensors remain visible.
- Wall and mounting space: If the TV is wall-mounted, plan the bar’s position and how it will be supported.
- Cable route: Allow room to connect the TV and any other devices without pinching cables or making them difficult to reach.
Sony’s setup guidance likewise recommends checking the space in front of the TV, the shape and dimensions of its stand and legs, mounting plans, and cable management. Check the soundbar’s published width, height, and depth against your own measurements; a general pairing chart cannot confirm that a particular model will fit your furniture.

How do you choose between a basic bar, Atmos, and surround speakers?
Choose the system around the listening experience you want and the room you can accommodate. More speakers and more format support can add options, but they also mean more equipment and placement planning.
| System type | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Basic stereo or 2.1 | Dialogue, TV news, and a simple installation | A 2.1 system adds a subwoofer when stronger bass is a priority. |
| All-in-one Atmos soundbar | A wider, more immersive sound field without separate rear speakers | Upward-firing hardware depends on suitable placement and a clear ceiling path. Virtual Atmos is more tolerant of room constraints, but does not produce the same physical overhead reflection as upward-firing drivers. |
| Soundbar with subwoofer and rear speakers | More immersive movie and gaming playback | Plan for the space, cables, and power required by the additional equipment. |
Dolby’s guidance says a 5.1.2 setup works well in almost any space; for compact rooms, it identifies 2.1 virtual Atmos or 3.0.2 as alternatives. These are configuration suggestions, not a guarantee that one layout will suit every room. Consider where the speakers can actually go before choosing a system.
Is Dolby Atmos worth it in your room?
Atmos may be worthwhile if you want a more immersive presentation and can place the soundbar so its sound has a clear path to the ceiling. If that path is blocked or unsuitable, an Atmos label alone does not guarantee the overhead effect you expect.

For an Atmos bar with upward-firing drivers, Dolby Laboratories’ 2018 technical guide gives an ideal ceiling height of 7.5–12 feet (2.3–3.66 m). A cabinet or soffit above the bar can disrupt the ceiling reflection, and objects should not block the upward-firing speakers. Dolby also advises leaving side-firing elements with unobstructed paths to the side walls and their first reflections.
Room geometry matters too. Dolby’s current home-entertainment FAQ gives viewing-distance guidelines of about 9–12 feet for a 55–75-inch TV in a medium room and roughly 13 feet for a 75-inch-or-larger TV in a large room. Treat those as viewing guidance, not strict acoustic rules. A large screen in a small room can put you close to the sound, while a long room may make a subwoofer or rear speakers more useful.
Which connection should you use?
When both the TV and soundbar have HDMI ARC or eARC, one HDMI cable between their matching ports is the simplest recommended connection. Check the labels and specifications on both devices before buying: having the feature on only one does not complete an ARC/eARC connection.

If the soundbar offers HDMI passthrough, you can connect a source such as a console or Blu-ray player to the bar, then connect the bar to the TV. Sony lists HDMI and optical as wired connection options. Optical can be useful when it suits the devices you own, but check that the connection and all devices in the signal path support the audio formats you want.

Do not assume that a source device’s format support carries through every connection. Verify what your TV, soundbar, and streaming box, console, or disc player can output and pass along. Sony cautions that Bluetooth may mean losing features such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, so it is not equivalent to a wired connection for every setup.

Use this checklist to make the decision based on your room and equipment, rather than the screen size alone:
Best Value

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Name the problem: Is it dialogue, bass, width, surround sound, or music playback?
- Measure the location: Record the stand width, available depth, soundbar height, and clearance below the screen.
- Check placement: Make sure the bar and its speakers will not be obstructed by the TV, furniture, or room features.
- Verify connections: Confirm HDMI ARC/eARC on both the TV and soundbar if that is your preferred connection; check optical as an alternative where appropriate.
- For Atmos, assess the room: Check the ceiling and placement conditions for upward-firing drivers, along with the paths to the side walls for side-firing elements.
- Plan any extra speakers: Decide whether a subwoofer or rear speakers suit your listening habits and can fit in the room.
- Compare the full setup cost: Include anything you need for installation, such as a wall mount or cable, and account for whether you might need a replacement remote.
When should you keep the TV speakers?
Keep using the built-in speakers if they already meet your needs. A soundbar is an optional audio upgrade, not a requirement created by a 75-inch panel. If you are unsure, first identify a specific shortcoming—such as unclear dialogue or insufficient bass—and choose equipment that addresses it rather than paying for features your room or listening habits will not use.
Frequently Asked Questions
How wide should a soundbar be compared with the TV?
It does not have to match the screen’s full width to work acoustically. A shorter bar can be a sensible choice; prioritize a secure fit and clear speaker paths, then decide whether a closer visual match matters to you.
Can I place a soundbar below my TV?
Yes. Dolby recommends placing an Atmos soundbar in front of the TV or just below it, approximately at seated ear or chest height. Keep the picture and the bar’s speakers unobstructed.
Can I use Bluetooth if my soundbar supports Atmos?
You can use Bluetooth where both devices support it, but Sony warns that Bluetooth may omit features such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. If those formats matter, check the supported connection path and use a suitable wired connection.
