Tax software can usually handle a straightforward U.S. federal crypto return when every exchange and wallet is connected, transaction history is complete, and the imported data reconciles to your records. A crypto-experienced CPA or enrolled agent is the safer choice when cost basis is missing, transfers do not reconcile, or your activity includes staking, mining, forks, airdrops, NFTs, DeFi, gifts, wages, business income, foreign issues, or an IRS notice. Software can calculate and format information, but you remain responsible for reporting taxable transactions accurately and keeping adequate records.
The practical decision is not whether software is “accurate” in the abstract. It is whether the information you give it is complete and whether the tax treatment of each transaction is clear enough to verify without professional judgment.

What does the IRS require for cryptocurrency and other digital assets?
For U.S. federal tax purposes, digital assets are treated as property. You must report income, gain, or loss from taxable digital-asset transactions for the year they occurred, regardless of the amount and regardless of whether an exchange sends you a payee statement or information return. Form 1040 filers must answer the digital-assets question.
The IRS expects records showing when you bought, received, sold, exchanged, or otherwise disposed of an asset; the units involved; fair-market value; and your basis. A software report is useful only when those underlying records are reliable.

Which forms can be involved?
- Form 8949 and Schedule D: generally used for capital gains and losses from dispositions.
- Schedule 1: may be needed for ordinary income from staking, mining, forks, airdrops, and similar activity.
- Form 709: may apply to reportable gifts.
- Form 1040 wage reporting or Schedule C: may apply when digital assets are received as wages or through a business.
Treasury and IRS final regulations require custodial brokers to report gross proceeds for transactions on or after January 1, 2025, and basis reporting for certain transactions on or after January 1, 2026. Those reporting rules can improve the information you receive, but they do not create a new digital-asset tax or eliminate your duty to report activity that is missing from a broker statement.
When can tax software handle a crypto return?
Software is usually a reasonable choice when your activity is limited and well documented. The strongest candidates have all wallets and exchanges connected, complete transaction histories, understandable classifications, and a final Form 8949, Schedule D, Schedule 1, or Form 1099-DA result that agrees with their source records.

- You used one or a small number of supported exchanges and wallets.
- Every purchase, sale, trade, deposit, withdrawal, and income event is present in the downloaded history.
- Transfers between your own wallets are identifiable and do not appear as unexplained sales.
- Cost basis is supplied or can be traced to complete purchase records.
- You have no unusual activity requiring a fact-specific classification.
- You are willing to inspect the imported data instead of accepting the first generated number.
Crypto tax reporting software can aggregate transactions, produce tax reports, and export information to a filing program. CoinTracker, for example, describes workflows for downloading reports, importing them into TurboTax or H&R Block, or sharing them with a CPA. The report remains a starting point for your return, not a guarantee that every classification is correct.
Use this workflow before filing
- Collect every source: download CSV files or statements from each exchange, wallet, protocol, and payment platform for the tax year. Include records for assets held outside a custodial exchange.
- Import into the software: connect supported accounts or upload the files. Confirm that the date range and account selection cover the entire tax year.
- Classify transactions: review items labeled as transfers, income, gifts, fees, swaps, staking rewards, mining proceeds, or other categories. Correct obvious mislabels rather than assuming the default is right.
- Reconcile movements: match outgoing transactions from one wallet or exchange with incoming transactions at another. Unmatched movements can produce phantom disposals or missing basis.
- Check basis and proceeds: investigate assets with zero, negative, or implausibly large basis and any sale for which the acquisition record is absent.
- Generate the forms: review Form 8949, Schedule D, Schedule 1, and any 1099-DA information against your own records.
- Transfer to the filing program: import the supported report or enter the required totals manually, then compare the final return with the crypto report before submitting.
Can TurboTax or another filing program handle crypto taxes by itself?
A general filing program can accept crypto data, but it normally depends on a separate transaction report or Form 8949. It does not automatically know which of your wallet movements were personal transfers, which rewards were income, or whether an exchange omitted an earlier purchase that determines basis.
CoinTracker’s documented TurboTax workflow warns that imports are limited to 1,000 capital-gain or loss transactions and that some income categories still require manual entry. A taxpayer with more transactions, staking or mining income, or unusual classifications may need to upload a report, enter figures by hand, or obtain professional help. H&R Block also supports crypto filing and Form 8949 imports, but the same responsibility to verify the source data applies.
Rank #2
Before relying on an import, check the filing program’s current transaction limit, supported file format, and treatment of ordinary-income categories. Limits and supported integrations can change between filing years.

Professional advice is worth the cost when the difficult part is deciding what a transaction means, reconstructing records, or defending a position—not merely adding numbers. Choose a crypto-experienced CPA or enrolled agent when one or more of the following applies.
Missing or unreliable cost basis
If an exchange shows a sale but no acquisition record, the software may calculate an overstated gain, an incorrect loss, or no usable result at all. A professional can help identify what documentation is available and determine how the unresolved basis should be handled instead of silently accepting a default.
Multiple wallets, exchanges, or chains
Several accounts increase the chance that a transfer is imported twice, omitted, or mistaken for a disposal. Reconciliation becomes especially important when an asset moves through self-custody wallets, bridges, or accounts that use different transaction identifiers.
DeFi and smart-contract activity
Decentralized-finance transactions can combine swaps, liquidity positions, rewards, fees, and contract interactions in a single sequence. Software may label those records, but it cannot independently validate the tax treatment of every protocol event.
Staking, mining, forks, and airdrops
These activities can create ordinary income and later capital-gain calculations. The relevant forms may extend beyond Form 8949 and Schedule D, so a professional review is prudent when the timing, valuation, or receipt of the asset is unclear.
NFTs, gifts, wages, or business activity
NFT transactions can involve inventory-like activity, personal-use assets, or investment dispositions. Gifts may require Form 709, while wages and business receipts can require wage reporting or Schedule C. Those classifications depend on facts that a generic import cannot infer reliably.
Foreign issues, an IRS notice, or audit risk
Cross-border accounts and residency questions can add reporting obligations outside the basic federal forms. If the IRS has sent a notice, or if you are unsure whether a prior return omitted digital-asset income, use a professional who handles notices and amended filings rather than relying on a fresh software import alone.
What is the difference between software and a professional?
Both options can be useful, but they solve different problems. Software is strongest at aggregation, arithmetic, and producing standardized reports. A professional adds judgment, questions your assumptions, and can explain or defend a position when the records are incomplete or the rules are fact-specific.
| Situation | Software fit | Professional need | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Complete records from supported exchanges; straightforward buys and sells | Usually reasonable | Optional review | The main task is importing, reconciling, and checking capital-gain output. |
| One or more missing acquisition records | Limited until basis is reconstructed | Strongly recommended | Basis can materially change gain or loss and cannot be safely guessed. |
| Many wallets or exchanges with unmatched transfers | Possible only after extensive cleanup | Often worthwhile | Duplicate, omitted, or misclassified movements can distort the return. |
| Staking, mining, forks, or airdrops | May calculate imported categories | Recommended when facts are unclear | Ordinary income and later dispositions may involve more than one form. |
| DeFi, smart contracts, or NFTs | Useful for organizing data | Recommended | Protocol events and asset use require fact-specific classification. |
| Gifts, wages, business activity, foreign issues, or an IRS notice | Not a complete solution by itself | Strongly recommended | Additional forms, reporting regimes, or notice responses may apply. |
How can you decide without paying for unnecessary help?
Use a staged approach. First, complete the data-collection and import process yourself if your records are accessible. Then stop and obtain a professional review when the software identifies unresolved basis, unclassified income, large unmatched transfers, or a form that does not agree with your statements.
Rank #4
Choose software-only filing when all checks pass
- Every account used during the year appears in the import.
- Beginning balances and ending balances are plausible.
- Transfers between your own accounts are matched.
- There are no unexplained zero-basis assets or duplicate transactions.
- The generated forms agree with exchange statements and your transaction history.
- You understand every category shown on the final report.
Choose a review or full preparation when a check fails
A limited review can be appropriate when the data is complete but you want another person to inspect classifications. Full preparation is more appropriate when records must be reconstructed, several forms are involved, or you need help responding to the IRS. Ask the provider whether they routinely handle digital assets, DeFi, staking, mining, NFTs, gifts, and notices rather than assuming a general tax practice has that experience.
What records should you prepare for software or a CPA?
Keep the original exchange exports and wallet records, not only the final PDF report. Organize them by account and tax year, and retain purchase dates, receipt dates, sale or exchange dates, units, fair-market values, fees, and basis information. Also preserve documents showing staking or mining rewards, airdrops, forks, gifts, wages, business receipts, and any 1099-DA or other information return.
Write down which wallets and exchanges belong to you and identify transfers between them. Save prior-year returns and any earlier crypto reports so a professional can trace basis that originated in a previous year. If an IRS notice is involved, provide the complete notice and its response deadline before discussing the numbers.

What common mistakes make a software result unreliable?
Assuming every incoming transaction is income
A transfer between your own accounts can look like a deposit. Label ownership transfers and preserve matching records so the software does not treat the movement as a sale or new income event.
Ignoring transactions that lack a tax form
The IRS says taxable digital-asset income must be reported whether or not you receive a payee statement. Missing paperwork is a reason to locate the underlying transaction, not a reason to omit it.

Accepting an automatic classification without review
Imported labels are suggestions based on transaction data. Review unusual rewards, protocol interactions, gifts, and business receipts before forms are generated.
Confusing a new reporting rule with a new tax
Broker reporting beginning with transactions on or after January 1, 2025, and certain basis reporting beginning on or after January 1, 2026, change the information supplied by custodial brokers. They do not make previously unreported activity disappear or create a separate digital-asset tax.
What should you do if the software and your records disagree?
Do not file until you know why they differ. Compare the account-level exports with the report, isolate unmatched transfers and missing acquisitions, and correct the source data before regenerating the forms. If the discrepancy involves a large gain, an uncertain basis, DeFi, staking, mining, an NFT, a gift, business income, or a prior-year error, escalate to a crypto-experienced CPA or enrolled agent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to report crypto if an exchange did not send me a tax form?
Yes. The IRS FAQ states that taxable income, gain, or loss from digital-asset transactions must be reported for the year of the transaction even when no payee statement or information return is received. Use your transaction records to determine what occurred rather than waiting for an exchange form.
What should I give a crypto tax professional before the appointment?
Send original exchange and wallet exports, prior-year crypto reports and returns, any 1099-DA or other tax forms, and IRS notices. Include a list of every account you controlled during the year and identify which transfers moved assets between your own accounts.
Can software create a missing cost basis?
It can organize the records you provide, but it cannot establish a defensible acquisition history that does not exist in those records. Gather older exchange statements, wallet history, and purchase confirmations; if the gap remains, have a professional determine how to report it.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I hire someone just to review a software-generated report?
A review can be a sensible middle option when imports are complete but you are unsure about classifications or form totals. Ask the reviewer to confirm transfer matching, basis, ordinary-income categories, and the consistency of the generated forms with your source statements.
