Yes—some Amazon Music downloads expire, while others do not. Songs downloaded from Prime, Amazon Music Standard, or Amazon Music Unlimited are offline access to a subscription catalog, not files you own. They can stop playing when the qualifying plan ends, when Amazon removes the title, or when the app no longer satisfies its offline checks. Purchased songs and albums are different: Amazon describes them as permanently tied to your account, keeps them in your Purchased library, and provides file-download options.
The quickest way to know which rule applies is to open your Amazon Music library and check whether the item is under Purchased. If it is a subscription title, the download is an in-app cache. If it is a purchase, you can download the music as files and copy those files to another location or device.

Do Amazon Music downloads expire?
Amazon Music downloads follow two separate ownership models. Subscription downloads from Prime, Standard, or Unlimited remain usable only while the related plan, catalog license, and offline requirements remain valid. Purchased downloads are account-backed purchases that Amazon says remain available for playback and can be downloaded as files.
“Downloaded” therefore does not automatically mean “owned.” The same phone can contain both kinds of content, but the app handles them differently. Subscription tracks are protected for playback inside Amazon Music; purchased tracks can be managed as downloadable music files.

What is the difference between a subscription download and a purchased song?
A subscription download is a temporary offline copy of streaming access. A purchase is digital music associated with your Amazon account rather than with an active music plan.

Amazon’s help description for purchased content says it is “permanently tied to your Amazon account and available for playback at any time.” That wording describes account access, not an absolute promise that every service will operate unchanged forever: Amazon’s terms reserve the ability to change, suspend, discontinue, or remove services and content in unusual legal or operational circumstances.
What happens to downloads when Amazon Music Unlimited or Standard is canceled?
When a Standard or Unlimited subscription expires or is canceled, the offline catalog rights end with the plan. Amazon says the app can gray out Unlimited songs and podcasts in your library and remove the Playback option.
Unlimited cancellation
Downloaded Unlimited tracks are not converted into purchases. They remain visible as catalog items only while your subscription and Amazon’s availability rules allow playback. Once the plan ends, a gray title or a missing Playback control is expected behavior rather than evidence that the phone’s storage has failed.
Standard cancellation
Standard downloads follow the same basic principle: they are subscription access cached for offline use. Ending Standard does not create transferable music files and does not move those tracks into the Purchased section.

Prime membership ending
Prime has narrower offline rights than the paid catalog plans. Prime offline listening is limited to eligible All-Access Playlists. If Prime ends, those playlist downloads can become unavailable, and Amazon can also change which titles qualify.

You can keep the encrypted data on the phone, but you cannot keep subscription playback as a permanent entitlement. Once the plan ends, the app may retain storage occupied by cached data while preventing playback; deleting and reinstalling the app will not turn those caches into owned files.
To retain music independently of a subscription, you must have purchased the track or album. Check Library > Purchased before canceling if you need continuing access. A title that appears only in a subscription playlist, artist page, or downloaded catalog view is not thereby purchased.
Why did an offline song become unavailable even though my subscription is active?
Cancellation is only one cause. Amazon identifies catalog changes, offline verification, and app changes as other reasons a downloaded title can stop playing.
The title left the catalog
Subscription availability is licensed rather than permanent. Amazon’s terms allow it to remove content from Store, Unlimited, or Prime, including when legal or operational reasons prevent continued storage or access. A download cannot preserve a title that Amazon no longer has the right to provide.

The app has not connected to Wi-Fi recently
Amazon says offline titles may become unavailable if the Amazon Music app has not been used while connected to Wi-Fi during the past month. Connect the device to Wi-Fi, open the app, and allow it to verify the account and refresh offline access before assuming the files are gone.
An app update changed the local cache
Amazon notes that app updates may require a re-download. If a title remains eligible but will not play after an update, connect to Wi-Fi, update the app completely, and download the track again. This fixes a local-cache problem without changing the ownership status.
Which Amazon Music plans support offline playback?
Offline eligibility depends on the plan and, in some cases, the type of content. Plan names and availability can vary by country and account, so verify the options shown in your Amazon Music subscription screen.

How can I tell whether an Amazon Music track was purchased?
Use the library classification rather than the presence of a download icon. Amazon’s own guidance points users to the Purchased area when managing bought content.
- Open the Amazon Music app.
- Open Library.
- Select Purchased.
- Look for the song or album there. If it is listed, Amazon treats it as purchased content tied to your account.
- If it appears only in a Prime playlist or Standard/Unlimited catalog view, treat it as subscription access, not ownership.
A purchase may also have a receipt or order record in the Amazon account used to buy it. Make sure you are signed in to that same account; switching Amazon accounts can make legitimately purchased music appear to be missing.

Can purchased Amazon Music files be moved to another phone or music player?
Yes. Amazon’s Android instructions distinguish purchased content from subscription downloads: purchased songs and albums can be downloaded as files and copied to another folder or device. Subscription downloads cannot be moved this way.
Download purchased content on Android
- Sign in to the Amazon Music app with the account that bought the music.
- Open Library > Purchased and locate the song or album.
- Use the app’s download control for the purchased item. The resulting files are the purchased content, not an Unlimited or Prime cache.
- After the download completes, use Android’s file-management tools to copy the files to another permitted folder, computer, or compatible device.
File compatibility, folder permissions, and the destination player determine whether the copied music appears immediately. Moving a purchased file does not transfer the Amazon account itself; it simply creates another local copy for a player that supports the file format.

Storage use depends on audio quality and song length. Amazon’s FAQ, accessed in 2026, gives an example for a 3½-minute song: approximately 9 MB in SD, 51 MB in HD, and 153 MB in Ultra HD. These are Amazon’s product guidance figures, not independent measurements, and actual sizes vary with track length and encoding.
The same FAQ lists recommended streaming bandwidth of 1.5–2 Mbps for HD and 5–10 Mbps for Ultra HD. Those figures describe streaming guidance, not a guarantee of download speed or a fixed file size. High-resolution offline libraries can consume storage quickly, so review downloaded albums periodically and remove subscription caches you no longer need.
Amazon’s FAQ describes a catalog of 100 million songs on the 2026 page accessed for this article. A large catalog does not mean every title is available in every country, plan, audio tier, or at every future date.

What should I do if downloaded songs are gray or missing?
Work through the cause in this order so you do not delete a purchase unnecessarily.
- Check the plan: Confirm that Prime, Standard, or Unlimited is active and that the account in the app is the one holding the subscription.
- Check the library category: Look in Library > Purchased. A purchased item should not be treated like a subscription cache.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi: Open Amazon Music while connected and allow the app to refresh offline authorization.
- Check catalog availability: Search for the title online. If it has been removed or replaced, a subscription download cannot restore it.
- Update and redownload: If an app update interrupted local data, install the current app version and download the eligible title again.
- Protect purchases: Do not clear app data or delete local files until you have confirmed the item appears in Purchased and can be downloaded again.
Is buying the track better than downloading it through a plan?
That depends on how you intend to listen. A subscription download is convenient for a large, changing catalog and requires no separate purchase for each track, but it is tied to plan and catalog availability. Buying is more suitable when you need a particular album to remain in your account, want downloadable files, or need to move the music outside the Amazon Music app.

Will a factory reset erase my Amazon Music purchases?
A factory reset removes local downloads from the device, but it does not normally remove purchases from the Amazon account. After signing back in, open the Purchased library and download the items again; subscription caches also need to be recreated.
Can I burn an Amazon Music Unlimited download to a CD?
No. Unlimited, Standard, and Prime offline downloads are app-only and cannot be copied to CDs or external storage. A purchased file is handled separately, subject to the file format and the destination device’s support.
Does changing phones cancel my Amazon Music subscription?
Changing phones does not itself cancel the plan. Install the app on the new device and sign in to the same Amazon account, then redownload eligible subscription titles or purchased content; offline rights still follow the plan and catalog rules.
Why is a song available for streaming but not for offline download?
