Yes. An AI checkout system can let shoppers enter with a card, mobile wallet, retailer app or other configured credential, track merchandise with cameras and sensors, and charge the associated payment method after the shopper leaves—without identifying the shopper’s face. Amazon says its Just Walk Out technology does not use or collect shoppers’ biometric information. That does not mean a store has no cameras: visual systems may still analyze products, hands and movement to determine what was picked up or put back.
How can checkout work without recognizing a shopper’s face?
The system needs to connect a shopping trip to a way to pay, and it needs to determine which products belong in that trip’s virtual cart. Those are separate jobs. A card, wallet, app or badge can establish the payment-linked trip; cameras, shelf or weight sensors, and in some stores RFID can track merchandise. Facial recognition is not required for either job.

In Amazon’s description, the trip can be associated with a temporary numeric code linked to the payment method. That code represents the shopping session rather than a biometric identity. Amazon says it discards the code when the shopper exits. Other providers and individual store deployments may use different configurations, so this is an example rather than a universal design.
1. The shopper authenticates a trip
Depending on the store, a shopper may tap a credit or debit card or mobile wallet, scan a retailer app, or use another configured method at entry or exit. The credential connects a trip to a payment method or account. It does not have to be a face scan. A store may also use a badge or other authorization method when its system is configured for that purpose.

2. Sensors track merchandise activity
During the visit, cameras and shelf or weight sensors can register products being taken from or returned to shelves. The system uses those observations to maintain a virtual cart associated with the active trip. In a camera-based design, computer vision helps distinguish merchandise and actions; the stated purpose is to determine what belongs in the cart, not necessarily to identify the person carrying it.
3. The system charges and provides a receipt
After the shopper exits, the store’s system can finalize the cart, charge the payment method associated with the trip and make a receipt available through the retailer or platform. How a particular retailer handles corrections, refunds, receipt access or an uncertain item is specific to its implementation; those details should be checked with the store rather than assumed from the technology category.

They may use cameras to observe the shopping environment, but that is not the same thing as facial recognition. A camera can capture a person in its field of view while software focuses on product movement, shelf interactions or other signals used to build a cart. Whether a deployment also processes biometric information depends on its configuration and practices.
This distinction matters because “no facial recognition” does not mean “no data processing.” The European Data Protection Supervisor describes checkout-free systems as involving AI, image recognition, cameras, sensors and payment-linked identity. Even when a system does not identify faces, a retailer still needs to explain its camera and sensor use and address payment linkage, account access, retention and receipt handling.

Amazon states that Just Walk Out does not use or collect biometric information of shoppers. Its description of the temporary trip code offers an example of how payment can be connected to a session without using a biometric identifier. But the statement does not establish that every checkout-free store, every vendor or every deployment uses the same design.
Can I use a card instead of biometrics?
Often, yes: card or mobile-wallet entry is among the documented ways to authenticate a trip in checkout-free systems. Whether a particular store allows it depends on that store’s available options and configuration, so check the entry instructions or ask the retailer if you do not want to use a biometric method.
There is an important qualification for buyers evaluating a branded system. Amazon’s developer documentation lists biometric authorization—including fingerprint or facial recognition—as a configurable option in some store architectures. A system can be deployed without biometrics, but the product name alone does not tell a shopper which authorization methods a particular location has enabled. Retailers should state the options clearly at the store and in relevant privacy notices.
What is the difference between camera checkout and RFID checkout?
Both can support checkout without a face scan, but they identify merchandise differently. Camera-based systems infer item and action events from visual information and sensors; RFID systems can use a unique tag attached to each item, with exit readers detecting tagged merchandise. Some deployments may combine technologies, and the best fit depends on the products and the store’s operating model.

| Approach | How it tracks merchandise | Where it can fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camera-based computer vision | Uses cameras and computer vision to recognize merchandise and shopping actions; shelf or weight sensors may also contribute. | AiFi described a camera-only computer-vision approach in 2024 in which shoppers enter with a card or app, pick up products, leave and receive a receipt. | Which cameras and sensors are used, how the virtual cart is corrected when an event is uncertain, and what visual or trip data is retained. |
| RFID | Each item carries a unique RFID tag; exit readers detect tags and add the items to the shopper’s cart. | Merchandise stores, including apparel or other individually tagged goods, where items can carry tags. | Whether every relevant item is tagged and whether the tag’s frequency, memory and form factor are compatible with the readers and merchandise. |
| Combined sensors | May combine cameras with shelf or weight sensors, or use RFID alongside other signals. | Stores whose products, shelves or workflows benefit from more than one sensing method. | Which technology is responsible for each decision and what happens if signals disagree. |
The available descriptions do not establish that RFID is universally more accurate, more private or less expensive than camera systems. RFID can identify a tagged item at a reader, but it depends on the item being tagged and the tag being compatible with the installation. Camera systems avoid the need to attach a unique RFID tag to every item in the way described, but their use of visual data raises separate questions about camera coverage, processing and retention. A retailer should assess the merchandise fit and data practices rather than treating either technology as an automatic privacy solution.
What should a retailer ask before choosing a system?
A no-facial-recognition promise is only one part of a system evaluation. Retailers need to confirm the actual identity method, sensing architecture, payment and point-of-sale connections, data practices and evidence for operational performance. Ask for answers tied to the specific store configuration, not just a general product description.
Recommended Free Tools
- Identity method: Can shoppers use a card, mobile wallet, app or badge? Are palm, fingerprint or face options also available, and are they optional or required in this location?
- Sensing design: Does the store rely on overhead cameras, shelf or weight sensors, RFID readers, or a combination? What event does each sensor detect?
- Merchandise fit: Are products packaged goods, apparel or other individually tagged merchandise? If RFID is used, confirm tag-reader compatibility, including frequency, memory, adhesive and form factor.
- Data practices: What is linked to a payment method or account? What is retained, for how long, who can access it, and how are notices and receipt delivery handled? Is biometric information collected?
- Retail operations: How does the system connect to the product catalog, point of sale and payment processor? What are the retailer’s procedures for refunds, disputed items and other exceptions?
- Evidence and failure handling: Ask whether accuracy, uptime, shrinkage, accessibility and recovery procedures have been independently verified or are vendor-reported. Find out what staff and shoppers should do when the virtual cart or payment is wrong.
These questions also help separate a system’s capabilities from a particular retailer’s policy. A platform may support several ways to authenticate a visit, while the store chooses only some of them. Likewise, a vendor’s description of its technology does not, on its own, tell a shopper how a retailer retains data or resolves a disputed charge.
What performance figures are available—and what do they show?
Amazon reported three operating figures in 2026 for its Just Walk Out stores: an average shopper theft loss below 1%, average uptime of 99.9%, and deployment in more than 375 stores across five countries. Amazon said the first two averages covered compliant stores from June 2024 through May 2025. These are vendor-reported figures for that stated scope and period, not independent industry benchmarks or guarantees for every store.

Store counts change over time, so the reported “more than 375” deployment figure should be understood as Amazon’s count in its 2026 technology article, not a permanent total. The figures do not establish facial-recognition performance: they describe reported operational outcomes, and do not show that a store must use facial recognition to achieve them.
No independent accuracy study or regulator-certified performance figure is established in the material cited here. Buyers should therefore distinguish vendor-reported uptime or shrinkage from independently measured item-recognition accuracy, and ask for evidence that matches their merchandise, store layout and operating conditions. Do not treat a vendor’s average as a predicted result for a new deployment.
What does “without facial recognition” mean for shopper privacy?
It means a checkout-free purchase can be associated with a payment credential or temporary session rather than a face-based identity, if that is how the location is configured. It does not by itself answer what cameras record, whether images or derived data are kept, how long payment-linked records remain available, or who can view them. Those are distinct questions for the retailer’s notices and controls.
Before using a store, a privacy-conscious shopper can look for the posted notice or ask staff how the entry method works, whether any biometric option is involved, where the receipt appears and how to request help with a charge. A retailer should make those answers understandable before the shopper commits to a checkout method. The EDPS overview is a reminder that cameras and sensors can still raise data-protection concerns in a facial-recognition-free store.
