None of the three assistants produced a universally correct Disney World price. ChatGPT estimated about $7,500–$9,000, Gemini about $10,050–$13,350, and Perplexity about $8,760–$11,520 before optional upgrades, rising to $10,545–$13,955 with Lightning Lane, Park Hopper, souvenirs and Memory Maker. The apparent $5,000 gap came from comparing ChatGPT’s low target with Perplexity’s high, convenience-heavy ceiling—different assumptions rather than a clean accuracy test. For a family of five traveling March 30–April 3, 2027, the most important correction is lodging: a Disney resort family suite near Easter can cost far more than ChatGPT allowed. Use AI to structure the trip and expose choices, then verify every live Disney price before paying.
What exactly did the Disney World AI comparison test?
Tom’s Guide author Amanda Caswell, a former Walt Disney World cast member, gave ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same assignment. The travelers were two adults and three children, ages 12, 10 and 6, flying from Philadelphia for a five-day Walt Disney World vacation from March 30 through April 3, 2027.

Each assistant was asked to cover flights, a Disney resort, tickets for all four theme parks, meals, Lightning Lane, restaurants, transportation, souvenirs and a packing list. That is a useful real-world test because a vacation budget is not one number: hotel category, ticket type, dining style and convenience purchases can move the total by thousands of dollars.
The dates also matter. March 30–April 3, 2027 ends immediately before Easter Sunday, April 4, a period when spring-break demand can raise room prices and crowd levels. A quote that ignores the calendar can look precise while being impractical.

How much did each AI estimate?
The three totals are easiest to understand when their ranges and assumptions are shown together.
| Assistant | Initial or essentials range | Notable assumptions | Suggested target or upgraded ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | $7,500–$9,000 | Airfare $1,000–$1,500; hotel $1,800–$2,600; tickets $2,500–$3,000; food $1,000–$1,400 | About $8,500 as a realistic target |
| Gemini | $10,050–$13,350 | Recognized the Easter-adjacent dates and priced a Disney’s Art of Animation family suite at about $4,000–$4,500 for five nights | About $9,500–$11,000 for a comfortable trip |
| Perplexity | $8,760–$11,520 | Essentials estimate before convenience upgrades | $10,545–$13,955 after Lightning Lane, Park Hopper, souvenirs and Memory Maker |
The headline’s “$5,000 more” is therefore a comparison of unlike endpoints. ChatGPT’s low initial figure and Perplexity’s high upgrade-inclusive ceiling are separated by $6,455 when the listed numbers are subtracted. The editorial shorthand describes the broad gap in spending style, not a controlled measurement in which every line item was priced identically.
Why was ChatGPT’s first number too low?
The hotel allowance was the largest error
ChatGPT chose Disney’s Art of Animation Resort and a family suite, which is a sensible capacity choice for five travelers. The problem was the $1,800–$2,600 hotel allowance for these dates. The resort’s family suites sleep up to six adults and include two bathrooms, a kitchenette and a microwave, but a five-night stay around spring break can be substantially higher. Gemini’s $4,000–$4,500 estimate better reflected that date-sensitive demand.
This is the practical lesson: a model can select the right room type and still produce the wrong total if it treats an expensive week as an average week. Hotel pricing should be checked first because a mistaken room assumption propagates through the whole budget.
The model did not make the date risk visible enough
A useful quote should say whether its lodging figure is a live rate, a historical ballpark or a planning allowance. The test did not establish that ChatGPT had a current, bookable room price. Treat its hotel line as an optimistic scenario rather than a reservation-ready figure.

Did the assistants handle Disney ticket ages correctly?
Disney’s cited standard date-based ticket information places guests ages 10 and older in the adult pricing category. In this family, the 12-year-old and 10-year-old therefore require adult tickets; only the six-year-old qualifies for child pricing. Any plan that prices three child tickets understates admission.
The ticket total also depends on ticket type. A base ticket for one park per day is not the same product as a Park Hopper ticket that permits movement between parks. Perplexity’s higher ceiling included Park Hopper, while ChatGPT’s range did not clearly represent the same upgrade package. Compare ticket products line by line before comparing totals.
What did Perplexity include that made its ceiling higher?
Perplexity optimized for convenience. Its plan added regular dining, more Lightning Lane use, Park Hopper tickets, souvenirs and Memory Maker. Those choices can be entirely reasonable for a family trying to reduce waits and capture photos, but they are optional spending rather than a universal cost of admission.
Perplexity’s itinerary was also the one the author favored: Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom and a second Magic Kingdom day. A repeat Magic Kingdom day may be especially attractive with children, but it also changes transportation, dining and ticket decisions compared with a four-day, one-park-per-day plan.
Which AI is best for planning a Disney World vacation?
There is no single winner. Gemini was the most credible on date-aware lodging and the age threshold; Perplexity offered the clearest convenience-heavy itinerary; ChatGPT supplied a useful lower-cost frame but was weakest where the hotel estimate mattered most.

| Comparison question | What the test suggests |
|---|---|
| Date-aware hotel pricing | Gemini performed best by recognizing the Easter-adjacent period and using a roughly $4,000–$4,500 family-suite estimate. |
| Ticket-age correctness | Gemini explicitly treated ages 10 and 12 as adults, leaving only the six-year-old in the child category. |
| Optional upgrades | Perplexity made Lightning Lane, Park Hopper, souvenirs and Memory Maker visible in its higher ceiling; the other ranges were less comparable. |
| Itinerary usefulness for children | Perplexity’s five-park-day sequence, including a second Magic Kingdom day, was the author’s preferred schedule. |
| Uncertainty disclosure | The spread shows why every estimate should identify whether it is an essential budget, a comfortable target or an upgrade-inclusive maximum. |
| Fit with spending style | ChatGPT represented a more restrained target, Gemini a comfortable middle-to-high plan, and Perplexity a convenience-oriented vacation. |
The best workflow is to ask more than one model for independent assumptions, not to crown one as an oracle. If two plans disagree, inspect the hotel, ticket and upgrade lines that caused the difference.
How much should a family of five budget?
For this exact Philadelphia-to-Orlando scenario, a responsible planning range is approximately $9,500–$11,000 for a comfortable trip, with the possibility of reaching $13,350 or more when the family chooses a larger suite, Park Hopper, frequent Lightning Lane purchases, souvenirs and Memory Maker. A lower target near $8,500 is possible only if the hotel, dining and optional extras are priced very carefully and available at favorable rates.
Use the following framework rather than treating one total as a promise:
- Lean plan: Start around ChatGPT’s $7,500–$9,000 range, then verify whether a real Disney resort room is available for the dates. The hotel line is the part most likely to force an upward revision.
- Comfortable plan: Reserve roughly $9,500–$11,000, consistent with Gemini’s comfort range, while leaving room for date-based ticket and meal changes.
- Convenience-heavy plan: Plan toward Perplexity’s $10,545–$13,955 ceiling if the family wants Park Hopper, regular dining, substantial Lightning Lane use, souvenirs and Memory Maker.
These are planning bands, not guaranteed quotes. Airfare alone was estimated at $1,000–$1,500 in ChatGPT’s breakdown, and each assistant’s total treated food and convenience purchases differently.
How do Disney resort benefits change the plan?
Guests staying at Disney Resort hotels and select other hotels receive 30-minute early entry into Walt Disney World theme parks every day of their stay, including check-in and check-out days; Disney says this benefit continues through 2027. Early entry can improve a family’s ability to experience popular attractions before the regular opening, but it does not make a low hotel quote accurate or eliminate the need to reserve the right ticket.

Build the benefit into the itinerary rather than assigning it a cash value. It may reduce the pressure to buy every available queue-skipping option, yet the actual value depends on the family’s wake-up time, transportation and willingness to arrive before rope drop.
How does Lightning Lane affect the total?
Lightning Lane prices vary by date, park, attraction and availability. Eligible Disney Resort and select-hotel guests can purchase qualifying access up to seven days before their stay; other guests generally use a three-day window. Because prices and inventory change, an AI-generated Lightning Lane allowance should be treated as a placeholder until the purchase window opens.
Decide first whether the family wants occasional access for the most important attractions or a broader, convenience-first strategy. Then ask the assistant to show the cost as a separate line. Hiding it inside a food or ticket estimate makes the total impossible to audit.

A five-day schedule visiting all four parks requires deliberate pacing for children ages 6, 10 and 12. Perplexity’s sequence—Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, Animal Kingdom and a second Magic Kingdom day—offers a concrete starting point, but the order should be checked against park hours, dining reservations and transportation time when those details are available.
- Lock the dates and room type. Confirm the exact check-in and check-out nights and price the family suite or alternative Disney room for those dates.
- Classify every traveler correctly. Price the 10- and 12-year-olds as adults under Disney’s cited age rule and the six-year-old as a child.
- Choose the ticket product. Decide between one-park-per-day admission and Park Hopper before comparing totals.
- Separate optional access. Put Lightning Lane, Memory Maker, souvenirs and special dining in their own lines.
- Map park days around energy. Place a lighter day or a later start where the children need recovery, and use early entry only if the family can reliably arrive early.
- Reprice at booking time. Replace every AI allowance with the live Disney, airline and dining prices before committing.
What should you pack for long park days?
The original assignment included a packing list, and one practical item deserves special attention: a portable phone charger or power bank. Navigation, mobile tickets, attraction wait times, dining and photos can drain a phone during a full park day. Pack the charger with the cables required by the family’s devices, and confirm airline rules for carrying lithium batteries before flying.

AI can generate a useful checklist, but it cannot know every family’s medical, mobility, weather or airline constraints. Treat the list as a prompt for your own check rather than as a substitute for preparation.

- Live Disney resort availability and the complete five-night price for March 30–April 3, 2027.
- Ticket type, date validity and adult-versus-child pricing for all five travelers.
- Current airfare from Philadelphia, including baggage and seat assumptions used in the quote.
- Whether Park Hopper, Lightning Lane and Memory Maker are included or optional.
- Restaurant availability, meal style and any reservation timing that changes the daily plan.
- Transportation time between the resort and each park, especially on early-entry mornings.
Caswell’s conclusion captures the right level of trust: “I’d happily let AI build my itinerary. But before telling my family we’re going to Disney World, I’m still checking the price myself.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can two AI tools give different prices from the same prompt?
They may silently choose different room categories, ticket products, dining patterns and levels of paid convenience. A low essentials quote and a high upgrade-inclusive quote are not comparable until those assumptions are normalized.
Should I ask an AI to produce one final Disney budget?
Ask for at least three versions instead: lean, comfortable and convenience-heavy. Requiring each version to list hotel, tickets, food, transportation and extras separately makes it easier to replace estimates with live prices.
When should I recheck Lightning Lane pricing?
Recheck when Disney’s purchase window opens for your eligibility group, because date, park, attraction and remaining availability affect the price. Earlier planning figures are useful for a ceiling, not a guaranteed charge.
