Short answer: no—not on the outcomes measured. A natural experiment involving 1.5 million Change.org petitions found that access to the platform’s built-in AI writer changed how petitions were written: they became longer, used more complex and varied wording, and converged on a more similar style. Yet the changes did not improve the measured results. Cornell University’s account reports that the share of petitions receiving at least one comment within 30 days fell by about 5% relative to the pre-AI baseline, while the study’s other outcome—reaching 10 signatures by the time of data collection—also failed to improve.
The finding is specific to Change.org’s feature, its rollout, and those outcome measures. It does not prove that every AI writing tool harms advocacy, but it does show that a more polished or standardized petition is not automatically a more persuasive one.

The best available evidence from Change.org says that AI assistance changed petition language without increasing the likelihood that petitions achieved the study’s measurable milestones. The intervention was the platform’s own “write with AI” option, not a laboratory test of an unnamed chatbot or a comparison of different commercial models.
Researchers compared petition activity before and after the feature became available in English-speaking countries. Their platform-level analysis covered 1.5 million petitions, and a separate analysis of people who had written petitions both before and after the tool’s introduction produced the same overall result.

What exactly did the researchers study?
A staggered rollout created a natural comparison
Change.org introduced the assistant gradually between October 2 and December 15, 2023. The first rollout covered the United States, Great Britain, and Canada; Australia received the feature 11 weeks later. Cornell’s account says the countries had similar pre-tool trends in petition style and outcomes, allowing the researchers to compare places that had received access with places still in the earlier period.
This is a natural experiment: researchers used a real product change and its timing rather than asking volunteers to write artificial petitions under controlled instructions. Their difference-in-differences analysis estimated how outcomes changed after access while accounting for the pre-existing trend in each rollout group.
The repeat-writer analysis checks whether the pattern was only about different users
A platform-wide result could be misleading if the kinds of people writing petitions changed at the same time as the tool. To address that possibility, the researchers separately examined repeat petition writers who had written before and after the assistant appeared. The abstract reports that this within-writer analysis was consistent with the platform-level finding: access altered petition language but did not improve the measured outcomes.
What changed when Change.org added AI petition writing?
AI-assisted petitions looked different in several measurable ways. The researchers examined both individual wording and how similar petitions became to one another.
Petitions became longer
The analysis found increases in petition length, including title length. A longer petition can contain more context, examples, or explanation, but length by itself says nothing about whether readers will comment or sign. The study did not find a corresponding improvement in its outcome measures.
Vocabulary and readability shifted
The team assessed lexical diversity—the number of unique words relative to the total number of words—as well as readability indicators such as words per sentence and syllables per word. Cornell reports that AI-assisted petitions used more complicated and varied words. Those are text properties, not direct measures of credibility, urgency, factual accuracy, or mobilizing power.
Petitions became more homogeneous overall
“More varied” wording within a petition can coexist with greater homogeneity across petitions. In this study, access to the assistant substantially altered lexical features and increased petition homogeneity at the platform level. In practical terms, individual drafts could sound more elaborate while many petitions moved toward a shared vocabulary and structure.

Titles converged on formal action verbs
Cornell reports a notable change in title language. Words such as “implement,” “mandate,” and “urge” appeared more often after the tool became available. Study author Isabel Corpus told Cornell that petitions began calling for people to use those verbs, whereas they had been uncommon before. The shift suggests that the assistant encouraged a recognizable advocacy register, but the study does not show that these verbs caused readers to act.
Mor Naaman, a study author quoted by Cornell, said the AI-enhanced petitions contained “the markers of what was successful in the past.” The important distinction is that reproducing historical markers did not translate into better results in the period examined.
Did the AI tool make petitions more effective?
No. The researchers used two concrete indicators of petition traction, and neither improved after access to the assistant.
| Comparison | What was measured | Result reported |
|---|---|---|
| AI access versus the pre-AI period | Share receiving at least one comment within 30 days | No improvement; Cornell reports an approximately 5% relative decrease from the pre-AI baseline |
| AI access versus the pre-AI period | Share reaching 10 signatures by the time of data collection | No improvement reported |
| Text properties | Length, lexical features, readability indicators, and similarity among petitions | Petitions became longer, used more complex and varied wording, and became more homogeneous overall |
| Scope of the evidence | Change.org’s in-platform writing assistant and the outcomes above | Applies to this feature and these measures, not to every AI tool or advocacy campaign |
The roughly 5% figure needs careful reading. It is Cornell’s reported relative change in the share reaching one comment within 30 days compared with the pre-AI baseline. It is not a five-percentage-point drop, and it is not evidence that every form of petition success or civic impact declined by 5%.
Why can more polished petition language fail to produce more action?
The study establishes a mismatch between text changes and measured outcomes; it does not identify a single reason for that mismatch. Several practical mechanisms could explain why a petition that sounds more formal or complete still fails to mobilize readers.
Standard wording may reduce distinctiveness
When many petitions use similar structures and action verbs, a new petition may be easier to recognize as a petition but harder to distinguish from the surrounding stream. Readers often decide what deserves attention from the title, the source of the request, and the immediacy of the issue—not from vocabulary sophistication alone.
Extra detail can increase reading effort
Longer sentences and more syllables per word can add explanation, but they can also delay the specific ask. A reader who cannot quickly identify who should do what, by when, and why may leave before commenting or signing. The study measured readability-related features; it did not test which sentence length or vocabulary level works best for a particular audience.

Historical patterns are not guarantees
An assistant trained or designed to reproduce language associated with earlier successful petitions may capture surface signals without reproducing the conditions that made those campaigns successful. Timing, news coverage, organizer credibility, offline networks, and the decision-maker’s incentives are not interchangeable with wording.
Petition outcomes depend on distribution
Comments and signatures require people to encounter a petition and decide to respond. AI can help draft text, but the study did not show that it supplies an audience, earns media attention, builds an email list, or creates relationships with affected communities. Better prose cannot compensate automatically for weak distribution or an unclear target.
How should you interpret the study’s 5% result?
Use it as a narrowly defined comparison, not as a universal decline in activism. Cornell’s account compares the share of petitions that reached one comment within 30 days with the pre-AI baseline. The result is relative to that baseline and that 30-day window; it does not convert into a fixed number of fewer comments per petition.
The second outcome—reaching 10 signatures by the time data were collected—also did not improve, but the abstract does not supply a percentage change for it. Avoid combining the two measures or treating one as a proxy for every meaningful form of civic influence, such as policy meetings, donations, media coverage, or offline organizing.

What does Change.org’s current assistant actually do?
Change.org describes the feature as an AI writing assistant that uses a creator’s issue, specific ask, and personal story to generate an editable draft. During petition creation, the platform describes AI help as the default option, while allowing creators to write the petition themselves. The generated material can include title and content suggestions, and the creator remains responsible for deciding what is published.
That product description explains the workflow, not its effectiveness. The 2026 study is the independent evidence about observed changes after access; Change.org’s guide is evidence about what the feature is designed to provide.
What does this evidence not prove?
- It does not test every AI writer. The intervention was one in-platform Change.org feature. Results could differ for tools with different prompts, models, editing controls, or user populations.
- It does not show that AI-written petitions always fail. The average effect on the specified outcomes was not positive; individual campaigns may still perform differently.
- It does not identify the exact generation model or adoption rate. The available abstract and university account do not provide those details, so claims about a particular model or about how many creators used the assistant would go beyond the evidence.
- It does not establish effects for every petition category. The reported result is at the platform level. The available material does not provide reliable category-by-category estimates.
- It does not equate language quality with persuasion. More complex vocabulary, greater length, or a more formal title can be measured without proving that readers trusted or acted on the petition.
How can organizers use AI without losing the petition’s purpose?
The findings support a cautious workflow: use AI, if at all, for drafting assistance while treating the organizer’s evidence, voice, and distribution plan as the core of the campaign.

- Write the factual brief first. State the decision-maker, the precise change requested, the affected people, and the evidence supporting the request before asking for prose.
- Check the draft against that brief. Remove invented details, inflated claims, generic introductions, and action verbs that do not describe a realistic demand.
- Restore the personal and local context. Add details that only the organizer or affected community can supply. A standardized paragraph should not replace a verifiable account of what happened.
- Make the ask visible early. Readers should be able to identify the requested action without parsing a long preamble. Use headings or short paragraphs when the platform allows them.
- Edit for the actual audience. Replace unnecessary jargon and long sentences, but do not reduce a complex issue to an inaccurate slogan. Ask someone from the affected community to review the wording.
- Measure behavior, not polish. Track comments, signatures, and other goals relevant to the campaign separately. A smoother draft is not evidence that distribution or participation improved.
If an AI draft changes the facts, target, or meaning of a petition, do not publish it merely because it sounds professional. The study’s result is a reason to verify substance and audience response, not a reason to optimize for a recognizable AI style.

What is the practical verdict for petition creators?
Change.org’s assistant can reduce the effort required to produce a long, formally worded petition, and the study shows that it changes the language of petitions at scale. But the same analysis found no improvement in comments within 30 days or in reaching 10 signatures, with Cornell reporting an approximately 5% relative decline for the first measure.
Use AI as an optional drafting aid, not as proof that a campaign is persuasive. The evidence favors preserving a specific, credible request and testing whether real people respond—not assuming that more elaborate or more uniform wording will create support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I write a Change.org petition without using the AI assistant?
Yes. Change.org’s help material says creators can choose to write manually instead of accepting the suggested draft. If you do use the assistant, treat its output as editable text and verify every factual statement before publishing.
Can a petition be edited after it is published?
Change.org says creators can edit a petition after publication. It also warns that completely changing a petition in a way that misleads supporters may lead to removal, so substantial revisions should preserve the campaign’s original meaning.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is lexical diversity the same thing as readability?
No. Lexical diversity compares unique words with total words, while readability indicators can include sentence length and syllables per word. A petition can use a wider range of words and still become harder to read, so the measures should not be treated as a single quality score.
Should campaign groups ban AI drafting altogether?
The study does not justify a universal ban because it examined one platform feature and two outcome measures. A proportionate policy is to require human fact-checking, disclosure within the team, preservation of the affected community’s voice, and evaluation based on real engagement rather than stylistic polish.
