Design one website for people and AI agents, not a separate “AI layer.” Start with semantic HTML, accessible names, keyboard support, crawlable content, stable layouts, predictable forms and visible status changes. Then add an API, CLI, MCP server or WebMCP tool only where an agent must complete a task. This human-first foundation lets agents discover, read, act and verify reliably while keeping the same experience usable for screen-reader users, keyboard users and people on slow connections.
Google’s 2026 guidance says established crawlability and technical SEO remain the baseline; neither llms.txt nor special generative-AI markup is required for Google Search. Chrome’s newer guidance adds deterministic interaction, accessibility-tree quality, layout stability and experimental WebMCP checks. The practical sequence is therefore: make the ordinary site excellent, expose explicit machine actions when needed, and verify both human journeys and agent journeys.

An agent-ready website is a normal, standards-based website whose meaning and actions are clear to both humans and software acting on a person’s behalf. An agent can find the page, understand its content, operate controls, authenticate within the allowed scope, report what happened and recover from an error without relying on visual guesswork or hidden prompts.
Agent readiness is broader than search optimization. A search crawler needs to discover and index a page. A browser agent may also need to choose a product, fill a form, upload a document, request support or prepare a booking. Those are different products:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Readable product: crawlable pages, accurate content, clear hierarchy, canonical URLs and useful metadata.
- Task-completable product: all of the above plus explicit controls, deterministic validation, authentication an agent can finish, visible state changes and a safe machine interface.
Agents may use the rendered screen, the raw HTML or the accessibility tree. Chrome’s official agent-ready toolkit describes a well-formed accessibility tree as the primary way agents understand a page. The same semantics also help assistive technologies, so accessibility is the first machine interface rather than an optional polish layer.
Keep people in control. An agent is acting for a person, not becoming the customer or account owner. Reading public information can be low risk; sending a message, changing an address, publishing content, deleting data or paying money requires scoped authority and, where appropriate, a human confirmation.
How do I design a website for both humans and AI agents?
Use the sequence find → read → act → verify. Each stage has distinct implementation and testing requirements; skipping one creates a fragile experience even when the page looks attractive.
Find: make the right page discoverable
Keep pages intended for discovery publicly crawlable. Use sensible robots controls, a complete XML sitemap, descriptive titles, canonical URLs and stable internal links. Return real HTTP status codes: a missing page should be a 404 or 410, a moved page a 301 or 308, and an accessible page a 200. Do not make the core answer depend on a client-side sequence that a crawler or delayed browser cannot complete.
Publish first-party explanations of products, services, policies and support procedures. Give each important topic a stable URL rather than hiding it inside an unlinked application state. If a URL changes, preserve a redirect and update internal links and the sitemap.
Structured data is useful when it truthfully describes visible content and serves a concrete search or integration need. It is not a magic ranking switch. Google says there is no special schema.org markup required for generative-AI search, and indexing or serving is never guaranteed.

Prefer native elements: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, landmarks, links, buttons, labels and form inputs. Put the main answer in the initial HTML whenever practical, then enhance it with JavaScript. This approach is especially important for documentation, prices, availability, return policies and support answers that an agent may need before interacting.
Give every interactive element a visible and programmatic name. Expose whether a control is selected, expanded, disabled, loading, successful or failed. Associate every label with its input and connect error text to the field it describes. Use ARIA only when native HTML cannot express the required relationship; incorrect ARIA can make the accessibility tree less reliable.

Make technical meaning explicit. Fence code and add a language tag, identify units, use unambiguous dates, distinguish current from historical information and show an update date or validity window where freshness affects a decision. A price without currency, a delivery estimate without a region or a policy without an effective date is difficult for both a person and an agent to use safely.
Act: expose safe, deterministic actions
Only build this layer when delegated work is a real product requirement. Keep the human-visible workflow understandable even when an agent drives it. Use real forms, deterministic validation, recoverable errors and a visible success or failure state. If a task is complex or high volume, provide an OpenAPI-described API, an MCP server or a CLI in addition to the web interface.
Verify: prove that the journey worked
Verification means more than receiving a 200 response. The site should show the resulting state, identify any partial failure and provide a way to cancel, retry or undo an action. Record enough evidence for a person to understand what happened without retaining unnecessary personal data.
Does semantic HTML help AI agents?
Yes. Native HTML gives an agent stable roles, names, relationships and keyboard behavior without requiring it to infer intent from pixels. A real <button> communicates an action; a styled <div> that only looks like a button does not reliably expose one.
Build a predictable document structure
- Use one clear page topic and a logical heading hierarchy.
- Use landmarks such as
<header>,<nav>,<main>and<footer>to divide regions. - Use lists for sets of items and tables for genuinely tabular comparisons.
- Use descriptive link text that identifies the destination without surrounding prose.
- Keep focus order aligned with visual and task order.
Name controls and expose state
A button labelled “Submit request” is more useful than “Continue” when several forms are present. A menu should expose whether it is expanded; a tab should expose which panel is selected; a busy form should expose that submission is in progress and prevent accidental duplicate actions. Announce success and failure in a status region that is connected to the operation.
Support non-visual operation
Every core journey must work with a keyboard. Visible focus, sensible tab order, sufficient contrast, zoom support, captions and reduced-motion behavior help people and reduce the number of assumptions an agent must make. Do not hide essential information in hover-only interactions or tiny icon-only controls.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Chrome’s web.dev guidance recommends that required interactive elements be larger than 8 square pixels for visual analysis. That is implementation guidance for visual-agent analysis, not a general accessibility minimum; normal touch and accessibility requirements may call for substantially larger targets.
How can an AI agent understand my website?
Expose meaning in three places: the document, the accessibility tree and the machine interface. The document supplies content, the accessibility tree supplies roles and names, and an API or tool surface supplies reliable operations when clicking through a page is not enough.

Keep important answers in server-delivered HTML
Progressive enhancement is safer than a page that renders an empty shell and waits for several client-side requests. You can still use JavaScript for filtering, personalization and richer controls, but the canonical answer, key headings and essential links should exist before those enhancements run.
Use structured data conservatively
Add schema only when it matches visible, current content. Keep the visible page and the structured representation synchronized when a price, stock level, rating, event time or policy changes. Invented or stale markup creates false confidence for downstream systems.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I add llms.txt?
Not as a substitute for canonical HTML. Google says llms.txt is not required for Google Search, and special AI markup is not required for generative-AI search. Chrome’s experimental Lighthouse Agentic Browsing audit checks for its presence, while the AgentReady project treats it as one possible machine-readable summary.
The defensible approach is to maintain excellent HTML first, then test an optional file against the specific agents or ecosystems you care about. Keep it concise, accurate and aligned with the pages it describes; remove it if it becomes stale or duplicates contradictory information.
How do I make forms and checkout usable by AI agents?
Use ordinary, labelled forms with deterministic rules, visible state and safe recovery. An agent should be able to identify each field, understand what is required, submit once, read the result and know what remains to be done.
Design the form contract
- Label every field: connect a visible
<label>to its input and state the expected format, units and example. - Declare requirements: identify required fields, allowed values, character limits, file types and regional constraints before submission.
- Validate predictably: validate on the server, return field-specific errors and preserve valid entries after a failure.
- Expose progress: show loading, completion and failure states in text as well as visual styling.
- Prevent duplicate side effects: disable or make idempotent a submit action while it is processing, and return a stable confirmation identifier.
Make checkout and account changes deliberate
Before payment, publication, deletion or an account-data change, show the exact item, amount, target account, data scope and irreversible consequence. Require a human confirmation for high-impact actions. Provide a cancel path and, where feasible, an undo or recovery process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesProvide authentication an agent can finish
Do not hide the essential action behind a flow that requires an agent to solve an opaque visual challenge or copy a one-time secret from an unrelated device without a supported handoff. Use scoped sessions, clear consent and least-privilege tokens. If a human must take over, preserve the state and explain precisely what remains.
Is WebMCP ready for production?
WebMCP is an early-preview proposal, not a universal production dependency. Chrome describes declarative tools for standard HTML forms and imperative tools for dynamic interactions, but support and audit requirements are still changing.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Treat WebMCP as an enhancement. Keep ordinary HTML forms and documented APIs as fallbacks, detect capability before exposing a tool, and ensure the same authorization and confirmation rules apply whether an action arrives through a click, API call, MCP server or WebMCP tool.
The current Lighthouse Agentic Browsing category is experimental, requires Chrome 150 or later, and WebMCP audits require the WebMCP origin trial. Recheck those requirements before adopting them in a release gate. A tool that works only in an experiment cannot be the sole path to a customer’s task.
When should I expose an API or MCP server instead?
Expose a machine interface when a workflow is repeated, business-critical, difficult to operate reliably through a visual page or likely to be integrated by several clients. Define narrow operations, explicit input and output schemas, authentication scopes, rate limits, idempotency behavior and error codes. Do not expose broad administrative capability merely because an agent can technically call it.
How do privacy and security change for agent-driven websites?
An agent combines a person’s intent with tools that can read data and cause side effects. Design for consent, least privilege, provenance, prompt-injection resistance, auditability and recovery from the start.
- Scope intent: state what the agent is allowed to do, for which account, data set, recipient and time period.
- Separate trust zones: treat page text, uploaded files and third-party content as untrusted input, not as instructions that can redefine tool permissions.
- Confirm sensitive effects: require human approval for payments, purchases, credential use, publishing, deletion and other high-impact actions.
- Show identity and consequences: display the agent identity, requested operation, target, data scope and whether the result is reversible.
- Log responsibly: record tool calls, authorization decisions, confirmations, errors and recovery events while minimizing retained personal data.
- Protect freshness: timestamp prices, inventory, policies and availability or provide validity windows when an agent may make a decision from them.
- Provide escape routes: include a visible stop action, session revocation and a way to inspect or undo completed work.
The W3C highlights consent, unwanted disclosure, secondary use, provenance and policy enforcement. Microsoft’s agent design framework adds fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency and accountability. Google’s browser-agent safety work describes origin restrictions, prompt-injection detection, user-alignment review, human confirmation for purchases and ongoing red-teaming.

Combine deterministic audits, human accessibility checks and representative agent journeys. No single score proves that a site is safe or task-complete.

- Inspect the DOM and accessibility tree: check names, roles, relationships, visibility, labels, error associations and focus order.
- Run keyboard and screen-reader journeys: cover navigation, search, forms, dialogs, authentication and recovery, not just the home page.
- Degrade JavaScript deliberately: delay, disable or partially fail scripts and confirm that discoverable content and essential links remain available.
- Check stability: reserve image space, monitor layout shifts, remove accidental overlays, keep controls in predictable locations and test responsive breakpoints.
- Run task prompts: try “find the return policy,” “compare two plans,” “submit a support request” and “prepare a booking.” Include both successful and invalid inputs.
- Record outcomes: log steps, wrong actions, failure points, stale-data behavior, recovery, confirmation prompts and whether the final state is visible.
- Repeat after changes: rerun journeys after component, content, analytics, advertising or framework updates.
Chrome’s Lighthouse Agentic Browsing category reports audit status and a pass ratio rather than a conventional 0–100 score, and Chrome labels the category experimental. Use it as one signal alongside human review and real journey coverage.
A July 2026 preprint by Said Elnaffar and Farzad Rashidi reported 134 PASS runs out of 150 for an agent-ready ecommerce prototype versus 74 out of 150 for a baseline: strict success of 89.3% versus 49.3%. The 300 runs covered five tasks, three browser-agent models and identical catalogs and workflows. That is preliminary evidence from a controlled prototype, not a universal benchmark for every site.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO/GEO and agent readiness?
SEO primarily improves discovery, crawling, indexing and presentation in search results. AEO or GEO generally focuses on making answers easy for answer engines or generative systems to retrieve and summarize. Agent readiness adds reliable interaction: an agent can operate controls, authenticate within scope, complete a task, observe the result and recover safely.
| Capability | Conventional search-focused site | Explicitly agent-ready site |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Crawlable pages, canonical URLs, sitemap, internal links and correct robots behavior. | The same foundation, plus documented machine entry points and clear bot-policy decisions. |
| Reading | Initial HTML, headings, useful metadata and accurate structured data. | Those elements plus explicit units, dates, provenance, update times and complete comparison context. |
| Action | Forms may work for a person using a mouse and browser. | Native controls, deterministic validation, agent-completable authentication, APIs or tools, visible states and idempotent operations. |
| Accessibility | Accessibility addressed inconsistently or late. | Semantic HTML, accessible names, keyboard operation, focus order, contrast, zoom, captions and reduced-motion support are release criteria. |
| Stability | Visual polish with occasional shifts or overlays. | Reserved media space, predictable responsive behavior, stable control locations and controlled injected content. |
| Decision reliability | Content may omit source, region or freshness details. | Prices, stock, policies, constraints and timestamps are explicit and current. |
| Safety | Human confirmation assumed for most actions. | Scoped permissions, identity, prompt-injection defenses, confirmations, logs, cancellation and recovery are designed in. |
| Evidence | Page-level analytics and conventional accessibility checks. | Deterministic audits, human testing, accessibility testing, representative agent tasks and regression monitoring. |
What should I fix first on an existing site?
Use a staged roadmap so experimental tooling does not distract from defects that already harm people and machines.
Stage 1: repair semantics and accessibility
- Replace clickable generic containers with native links and buttons.
- Fix labels, headings, landmarks, focus order, keyboard traps and status announcements.
- Make dialogs, menus, tabs and validation errors expose their state.
- Check zoom, contrast, captions and reduced-motion behavior.
Stage 2: improve discovery, content and stability
- Confirm crawlability, indexability, canonical URLs, sitemap coverage and real HTTP status codes.
- Move essential answers into initial HTML and reduce dependence on client-only rendering.
- Align structured data with visible content and remove stale or invented fields.
- Reserve image and injected-content space, remove obstructive overlays and monitor layout shifts.
- Add dates, units, regions, constraints and freshness indicators to decision-critical information.
Stage 3: make real tasks completable
- Map the actions customers actually need: support, booking, configuration, account management or checkout preparation.
- Build labelled forms with deterministic validation, recoverable errors and explicit success states.
- Provide scoped authentication and narrow APIs, MCP operations or CLI commands where they reduce failure.
- Add confirmation, logging, cancellation and recovery for every consequential side effect.
Stage 4: measure and add optional capabilities
- Run the audit and journey loop on a representative set of tasks.
- Track completion, step count, wrong actions, stale-data incidents and recovery success without claiming a universal score.
- Test optional
llms.txtor WebMCP capabilities only against the agents and ecosystems that matter to your audience. - Keep ordinary HTML and API fallbacks permanently available.
What does a durable agent-ready design look like in practice?
A durable design does not announce that it is “for AI.” A visitor sees a fast, readable page with clear controls, useful feedback and understandable decisions. An agent sees the same meaning through the HTML and accessibility tree, then uses a narrow, authenticated interface when delegated work needs more reliability than visual interaction can provide.
That is why the investment order matters. Fix semantics, accessibility, crawlability, content clarity and stability first. Add explicit action interfaces second. Treat WebMCP, llms.txt and other emerging conventions as measured experiments, not replacements for web standards. The result is a site that remains useful when a browser changes, a JavaScript bundle fails, an agent lacks a particular capability or a person needs to take over.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I block AI crawlers from my website?
Decide by content and business purpose rather than using one blanket rule. Keep pages intended for public discovery crawlable, while using robots controls, authentication and access policies for private, licensed or sensitive material; document the policy so it is consistent across subdomains and APIs.
Can an accessibility overlay make a website agent-ready?
No single overlay can supply reliable semantics, keyboard behavior, safe authentication or deterministic business actions when the underlying code is ambiguous. An overlay may assist a remediation program, but native HTML, testing with people and explicit task interfaces remain necessary.

What analytics should I collect for agent journeys?
Capture task name, entry point, tool or page actions, validation failures, retries, confirmation events, completion state and recovery outcome. Aggregate or redact identifiers, set retention limits and avoid storing prompts or form values that are not needed to diagnose reliability.
How should a site handle a human taking over from an agent?
Preserve the current session and show a concise activity summary: what was read, what changed, what remains pending and which permissions are active. Let the person review or revoke authority before continuing, and make unfinished or reversible actions clearly distinguishable from completed ones.
