Denuvo is not simply an alternative to Steam DRM: it is an anti-piracy layer that can reinforce a storefront’s or publisher’s DRM, so both may apply to one game. The available evidence does not establish an inevitable Denuvo FPS penalty, and a hardware-bound offline token does not guarantee that every part of a game will launch without internet access. A DRM-free GOG release offers a different practical option—downloadable offline installers and an optional Galaxy client—but buying the game still grants a personal license, not ownership of its intellectual property.

What is the difference between Denuvo and Steam DRM?
They are different layers, and a game can use both. Valve describes its Steam DRM wrapper as an ownership-verification and Steam-launch mechanism; Irdeto describes Denuvo Anti-Tamper as protection that reinforces existing platform DRM rather than replacing it.

That distinction matters because “the game has Denuvo” does not tell you every condition for starting it. A title may also require a specific storefront, publisher account, launcher, first activation, or internet connection. Conversely, seeing a Steam launch does not establish that Steam’s wrapper is the game’s only protection. The exact edition’s current store listing and license terms are more informative than a single label such as “Denuvo” or “Steam DRM.”
Valve’s description also sets a boundary on what can be inferred from the wrapper: it is not, by itself, a stand-alone anti-piracy solution. That does not make it interchangeable with Denuvo, nor does it tell you how a particular game behaves offline. Treat each protection and launch requirement as a separate part of the edition you are considering.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation puts the distinction plainly: “The Steam DRM wrapper by itself is not an anti-piracy solution.” Irdeto’s own FAQ similarly says Denuvo “reinforces existing platform DRM to prevent circumvention.” These are descriptions of what each product is intended to do, not a promise that a particular game uses only one layer or behaves a particular way when disconnected.
For a buyer, the practical comparison is therefore not simply “Steam versus Denuvo.” Check whether the edition includes Steam’s wrapper, Denuvo, a publisher launcher, or some combination. A title’s purchase page may identify some requirements, but the publisher’s current terms can give more detail about accounts, activation and connectivity. Requirements can also vary between editions or change with updates, so confirm the exact version you plan to install.
Does Denuvo lower FPS?
The evidence does not support a universal FPS penalty or a universal no-impact guarantee. One published comparison of Batman: Arkham Knight found the same median in-game benchmark results across the tested Steam and Epic builds and indistinguishable loading times in the tested sections; that result is specific to that comparison.
Ars Technica’s September 2019 comparison is useful for one limited conclusion: Denuvo did not inevitably slow that tested game in those measured results. It cannot establish that every Denuvo game, patch, PC configuration, or scene performs identically. A result from one title should not be converted into a percentage that supposedly applies to all games.
Irdeto’s product description says the protection avoids performance-critical functions and claims no noticeable impact during play. That is the vendor’s claim, not an independent cross-game benchmark. It should be weighed differently from a named, measured comparison.
What a useful comparison would need to control
For a specific game, a meaningful performance comparison should match the game version and executable as closely as possible, along with PC hardware, graphics settings, drivers and benchmark scenes. It should report repeat runs and separate gameplay FPS or frame times from loading and startup. Those measures answer different questions: a startup delay does not by itself demonstrate lower in-game frame rates, and a loading-time result does not predict frame pacing during play.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Storefront builds may not be identical, and an update that removes or changes DRM may also bundle unrelated game changes. Those differences can confound comparisons. If a published result does not establish build parity and comparable test conditions, it may be evidence about the whole tested setup, but it is weaker evidence for isolating Denuvo’s effect.
When looking at a benchmark, ask what the reported number actually measures. Average FPS can conceal brief stutters; frame-time results show how consistently frames are delivered. A loading-time test addresses how long a level or save takes to appear, while startup testing concerns launching the game. The Batman: Arkham Knight comparison reported median in-game benchmark results as well as loading tests, and neither showed a difference for the tested builds. That is useful evidence for that case, not a substitute for tests of other games.

Likewise, the absence of a demonstrated effect in one test does not prove that no title could ever have a performance issue. To make a stronger claim about a particular release, look for repeated tests with comparable builds and settings, rather than a single before-and-after anecdote. If the DRM-free version uses a different patch or executable, any measured difference may reflect more than DRM alone.
Can I play Denuvo games offline?
Sometimes, but the presence of an offline entitlement token is not a guarantee that the entire game will start offline in every circumstance. Irdeto describes hardware-bound offline tokens; that description does not set one universal token duration or revalidation schedule for every Denuvo title.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Other requirements can be decisive. A publisher may require an account or client, an initial online activation, or a later online check. Ubisoft’s product-specific end-user license agreement for one example hosted on Steam describes Denuvo Anti-Tamper alongside other DRM and names Ubisoft Connect account, client and internet-dependent conditions. Those terms illustrate how layers can interact; they are not a rule for all Denuvo games.
Separate the question “Can the Denuvo component provide an offline token?” from “Can I launch this exact game, on this PC, with its other services unavailable?” The first concerns a protection mechanism; the second depends on the complete title and its terms. A game can launch its single-player campaign offline while online multiplayer, achievements, cloud saves or other connected features remain unavailable.
The Ubisoft agreement also offers a concrete example of why it is worth reading the applicable terms rather than assuming all limits come from Denuvo. For that product, the EULA states there is no total lifetime limit on computers, but allows activation on five distinct computers within a 24-hour period. That is a Ubisoft, product-specific condition—not a universal Denuvo cap. The publication year of the agreement is not stated, so check the current terms for the edition you intend to use.
Offline capability can also have more than one meaning. A title might allow a campaign to run without a connection after setup while requiring a connection for multiplayer or other online services. A token may be available yet not resolve a separate client or account check. If a trip or unreliable connection is the reason you are checking, verify the whole launch path, not only whether the game’s protection supports an offline token.

Does Steam Offline Mode work with Denuvo?
Steam Offline Mode should not be treated as a switch that disables a publisher’s separate launcher, account or activation requirements. Steam’s own Offline Mode support page does not establish a universal result for every game that uses both Steam and Denuvo.
Before relying on a title away from connectivity, check the exact edition’s requirements and distinguish first launch from later launches. If the publisher requires an account or client, confirm whether those requirements can be satisfied before departure and whether the game supports offline single-player after that. Do not assume that entering Steam Offline Mode bypasses authorization imposed by another layer.

This is a title-specific check rather than a blanket yes or no. A successful offline launch for one game does not establish the behavior of a different game, edition, or updated build.
Plan for each stage separately: downloading, installing, first activation, later launching and using the features you care about. Steam Offline Mode concerns Steam’s availability; it does not erase an independent publisher’s requirements. The Steam Support page does not provide a universal answer for all mixed-layer games, so a successful test with one title should not be generalized to another.
Does DRM-free mean I own the game?
No. “DRM-free” describes the absence of the relevant access-control restrictions on a release; it does not transfer ownership of the game’s copyright or intellectual property to the buyer. GOG’s agreement describes the purchase as a personal license, while the game content remains the property of its developers or publishers.
The practical benefit is different: GOG says customers can download the necessary offline backup installer files from their account, install the game, and launch it without Galaxy. GOG’s developer guidance also says the client should not be required to launch a game and that offline single-player play must be available without the client or a server login.
Having installation files you can keep and use is not the same legal right as owning the underlying game IP. Nor does a DRM-free single-player installer make connected features independent of their services. Online multiplayer and other features that depend on servers may remain unavailable without a connection.
GOG’s developer documentation states, “First of all, the GOG GALAXY client should not be required to launch the game.” Its guidance also requires offline single-player play without the client or a server login. This is a more specific practical promise than simply offering a downloadable installer, but it does not mean every feature is available offline or that every GOG game has no online components.
Downloading files also matters: offline installers are useful only after you have acquired them. If you may be without internet access, download all required installer files while you still have access to your GOG account and store them somewhere you can reach. A backup copy on separate storage can make them easier to retain, but it does not change the license terms or turn the files into ownership of the game’s copyright.
How can I check a game before buying it or travelling?
Check the exact game and edition rather than relying on a storefront name, a DRM label, or another player’s experience with a different build. These checks help uncover the difference between offline entitlement and a complete offline launch.

- Identify the precise edition. Confirm the store, edition and current game listing. Different releases or storefront builds may have different launchers, features or DRM arrangements.
- Read the publisher’s current requirements and license terms. Look for required accounts, clients, internet access, activation conditions and any stated device or installation limits. Do not apply one publisher’s terms to other Denuvo games.
- Separate first activation from later play. Find out whether an internet connection is needed to install, activate or launch for the first time, and whether subsequent offline launches have separate conditions.
- List the features you need offline. Check the single-player campaign separately from multiplayer and other connected features. A campaign that starts offline does not prove every feature will work.
- For a GOG release, download the offline installers in advance. The files must be acquired while you can access your account and the download. Galaxy is optional for installation and launching as described by GOG, but optional online features may still depend on services.
- Test the intended setup before depending on it. If you need to play on a trip, verify that the exact edition launches on the intended PC under the offline conditions you expect. A previous launch or a different PC may not establish current behavior.
These checks are also useful at purchase time: compare the actual executable and update path, other launchers, offline conditions, installer access, feature availability and license terms. A storefront label alone cannot answer all of those questions.
If you keep GOG installers for travel or long-term access, an external USB SSD is an optional place to store the backup files. The point is simply to retain files you have already downloaded; a drive does not remove DRM, change a license, or solve a Denuvo performance problem. A USB flash drive can also hold files, but storage choice does not alter the game’s authentication requirements.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I compare two editions of the same game?
Compare like with like and decide which kind of difference matters to you. A DRM-free edition can be preferable for retaining usable installer files, while another edition may suit a player who prioritizes a particular storefront or connected feature; neither preference proves a general performance advantage.
| Question | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Are the builds comparable? | Game version, patch, executable and included content | A storefront or patch difference can confound a performance comparison. |
| What has to be online? | Initial activation, later revalidation, launcher and account requirements | An offline token does not describe every other authentication layer. |
| Which features must work? | Single-player, multiplayer and any connected services | Offline availability can differ by feature within one game. |
| What can you keep accessible? | Whether installers are downloadable and usable without a client | Retained installers improve practical access but do not change copyright ownership. |
| What does performance evidence measure? | FPS, frame times, loading or startup, and the conditions of the comparison | These are distinct outcomes and should not be collapsed into one “slowdown” claim. |
| What limits apply? | Stated activation or device limits in the applicable terms | Terms for one publisher’s product are not universal DRM settings. |
There is no evidence here for a universal winner across storefront DRM, Denuvo-protected editions and DRM-free releases. The best choice depends on the particular build, how you play, whether you need offline access, and the license and launch conditions attached to that edition.
One economic study is sometimes relevant to debates over why publishers adopt Denuvo, but it answers a different question from whether a game runs faster. A paper titled “Revenue effects of Denuvo digital rights management on PC video games,” published in the January 2025 volume of Entertainment Computing, estimates mean total-revenue protection of 15% and median protection of 20%. It also estimates approximately zero mean revenue loss when Denuvo remains in place for at least 12 weeks. These are modeled publisher-revenue estimates, not measurements of FPS, loading, or a forecast for any named release. They should not be used to decide whether a particular edition performs better.

Does every Denuvo game have a five-PC activation limit?
No. One Ubisoft product-specific EULA states no total lifetime computer limit but permits activation on five distinct computers within 24 hours. That is a condition in that agreement, not a universal Denuvo setting.
Did the Denuvo revenue study measure FPS?
No. The paper’s estimates concern publisher revenue, not frame rates or loading performance. They cannot establish whether Denuvo affects FPS in a particular game.
Does a physical PC disc guarantee I can play without internet?
No. A disc can provide installation files, but it does not establish that the edition has no separate account, launcher, activation or authorization requirement. Check the specific edition’s current terms and test the offline setup you intend to use.
Can I back up GOG offline installers to an external drive?
Yes. GOG provides downloadable offline backup installer files, so an external USB SSD is a practical optional place to retain files after downloading them. The drive does not remove DRM from another edition or change your license rights.
Does Steam Offline Mode disable Denuvo or a publisher launcher?
Do not assume so. Steam Offline Mode does not establish that separate publisher accounts, clients or activation requirements are disabled. Check and test the exact game and edition.
Did the Batman: Arkham Knight comparison prove Denuvo never affects performance?
No. Ars Technica’s September 2019 comparison found the same median in-game benchmark results and indistinguishable tested loading times across the tested Steam and Epic builds. It supports a limited conclusion about that comparison, not every game, patch or PC.

Denuvo can sit alongside Steam or publisher DRM, and neither the presence of an offline token nor a DRM-free label answers every question about launch conditions, performance or legal rights. For a real decision, compare matched game builds, read the exact edition’s requirements, confirm which features work offline, and download any GOG backup installers before you need them. A saved installer is useful access—not ownership of the game’s intellectual property.
