For most people experimenting with DeepSeek, start with a distilled model and match the host to its memory requirements—not with the full DeepSeek-R1 model. Contabo is the value-oriented pick in Cybernews’ 2026 comparison for a one-click DeepSeek 14B setup; RunPod and Vast.ai are better suited to GPU-heavy workloads, while Liquid Web is aimed at managed hosting. A standard VPS and a GPU instance are not interchangeable: Alibaba Cloud’s listed minimum configuration for the 14B distilled model calls for two 24GB GPUs, 64GB of RAM and 200GB of disk.
This guide compares nine hosting choices, including two different RunPod deployment modes. The prices and configurations identified as 2026 review examples are snapshots, not guarantees of current availability or rates.

What should you choose for DeepSeek hosting?
Choose based on the exact model and how people will use it. For a small development or test deployment, Alibaba Cloud recommends a distilled 7B model with one 24GB GPU. For larger distilled models, its configuration table calls for multiple GPUs, more RAM and more disk. Full DeepSeek-R1 belongs in a separate, substantially more resource-intensive category.
- Want an easier start with a distilled model? Contabo is Cybernews’ value pick for a one-click Ollama setup for DeepSeek 14B. Check the current plan’s resources against the model requirements before ordering.
- Need a GPU and usage-based billing? Compare RunPod GPU Pods, RunPod Serverless and the host-specific listings on Vast.ai.
- Prefer managed administration? Liquid Web is the managed VPS option in this comparison; its reviewed examples have 16GB or 24GB of RAM, but the cited examples do not establish that either includes the GPUs required by Alibaba Cloud’s 14B configuration.
- Need a conventional VPS? IONOS, ScalaHosting, InMotion Hosting and DigitalOcean appear in the comparison for different priorities, but the available information does not establish a specific matching GPU configuration for each.
Cybernews says it assessed more than 20 VPS providers and reports more than 3,200 hours of testing in its 2026 review. Those figures describe that review’s assessment, not a guarantee that every listed plan can run every DeepSeek model.

How much GPU memory, RAM and disk does each model need?
Alibaba Cloud’s published table gives minimum GPU configurations for DeepSeek-R1 distilled models. Its figures show why a plan’s advertised system RAM cannot be treated as a substitute for GPU memory: the table specifies the GPU count and GPU size separately from system RAM and disk.

| DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Llama-70B | 263GB | Eight 24GB GPUs | 128GB | At least 1TB |
These are Alibaba Cloud’s minimum configurations, not a promise of a particular response speed or of fit for every serving setup. The 7B entry is especially useful for planning a test: Alibaba Cloud’s PAI guidance recommends DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-7B for development and testing with a single 24GB GPU.
Why is model size not the same as required GPU memory?
The table lists model size and GPU configuration as separate values. For example, the Qwen 14B distilled model is listed at 56GB and calls for two 24GB GPUs, not a single 56GB GPU. Use the specified GPU arrangement as the planning baseline; do not infer that a disk large enough for the model file, or a VPS with enough system RAM, will provide the required GPU memory.
What changes with full DeepSeek-R1?
Full DeepSeek-R1 is not the same deployment target as one of the distilled models. Alibaba Cloud says production use of the full model may require eight GPUs with 96GB each. Its PAI guidance also says loading a large model such as full DeepSeek-R1 might take 20 to 30 minutes. Those requirements make full-model deployment a different budget and operating category from an ordinary VPS plan.

Which nine hosting choices are worth comparing?
The choices below are not nine equivalent VPS plans. The list includes monthly VPS examples, GPU infrastructure and an inference service because the right form of hosting depends on the model’s resource needs and whether usage is continuous or variable.
| Choice | Best fit described in the comparison | Published example or defining detail | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contabo | Value-oriented, one-click Ollama setup for DeepSeek 14B | The comparison says a large-RAM VDS can also host a 32B model; no current plan price is established here. | Verify current plan price and whether its exact CPU, RAM, storage and GPU resources suit your intended model. |
| Liquid Web | Managed VPS and optional GPU hosting | Cybernews’ 2026 examples: 6 vCPU, 16GB RAM and 440GB storage for $72.50/month; or 6 vCPU, 24GB RAM and 540GB storage for $89/month. | Confirm whether GPU hosting is included or separately provisioned, and what management covers. |
| IONOS | Lower-cost lightweight hosting and traffic-heavy use | VPS XL at $15/month and VPS XXL at $22/month in Cybernews’ 2026 snapshot; unlimited traffic on a 1Gbit/s connection is described. GPU servers are listed from $1.79/hour. | Check which product the price applies to and whether the chosen VPS or GPU server has the required resources. |
| RunPod GPU Pods | Direct access to a GPU instance | Cybernews’ 2026 example is an L40S with 48GB VRAM at $0.99/hour. | Confirm current GPU availability and the rate for the region and configuration you need. |
| RunPod Serverless | Inference endpoints with variable demand | The comparison describes per-second billing and autoscaling; it does not give a specific serverless price. | Estimate costs from your expected use and verify endpoint configuration, scaling behavior and current rates. |
| Vast.ai | GPU marketplace for workloads that can use variable host inventory | The comparison describes auction-based pricing and a one-click template for full 671B-parameter DeepSeek models. | Listings, availability and prices vary by host; verify the actual hardware and terms for each listing. |
| ScalaHosting | Deployments needing custom resource allocation | Custom resource allocation is the stated differentiator; a specific configuration or price is not established here. | Ask whether the allocated resources include the GPU hardware your model requires. |
| InMotion Hosting | When unmetered bandwidth is the deciding factor | Unmetered bandwidth is the stated fit; no specific DeepSeek GPU configuration or price is established here. | Confirm the compute and GPU specifications separately from the bandwidth terms. |
| DigitalOcean dedicated inference | Users who want to select GPU resources and tune an inference deployment | Its documentation describes dedicated inference with tuning for latency, throughput, cost or concurrency; a price is not stated here. | Check available GPU choices, region, billing and deployment requirements in the current service documentation. |
1. Contabo: a guided route to a distilled model
Cybernews names Contabo its overall winner for a one-click Ollama setup for DeepSeek 14B. That is a convenience advantage, not evidence that every Contabo VPS configuration meets the Alibaba Cloud minimum of two 24GB GPUs, 64GB RAM and 200GB disk for the 14B distilled model. The comparison also says a large-RAM VDS can host a 32B model, but does not identify a specific VDS configuration or establish its GPU fit. Treat the one-click setup as a way to simplify installation, then verify the actual allocated hardware.
2. Liquid Web: managed VPS, with GPU details to confirm
Liquid Web is positioned for customers who want managed VPS hosting and an optional GPU path. The reviewed monthly examples are clearly specified for CPU, RAM and storage: $72.50 for 6 vCPU, 16GB RAM and 440GB, and $89 for 6 vCPU, 24GB RAM and 540GB. Neither RAM amount reaches the 64GB minimum listed for the 14B distilled model, and those examples do not state a GPU configuration. Ask for the exact configuration and whether GPU hosting is included before treating either as a DeepSeek 14B host.
3. IONOS: separate the VPS offer from the GPU offer
IONOS is presented as a low-cost option for lightweight hosting, with unlimited traffic over a 1Gbit/s connection. Cybernews’ 2026 snapshot gives VPS XL at $15 per month and VPS XXL at $22 per month, while GPU servers are listed from $1.79 per hour. These are different resource categories: do not assume that the monthly VPS examples include a GPU just because the provider also offers hourly GPU servers. Check the selected product’s memory, disk and GPU inventory against the intended model.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
4. RunPod GPU Pods: rent a GPU directly
RunPod’s GPU Pods are the more direct fit when inference needs dedicated GPU capacity rather than a conventional CPU VPS. Cybernews’ example is an L40S with 48GB of VRAM at $0.99 per hour in its 2026 snapshot. That is an example rate, not a promise of current inventory or pricing. Compare the GPU’s available memory with Alibaba Cloud’s configuration for your model; the single 48GB example does not itself establish the multiple-GPU configuration listed for 14B or larger distilled models.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. RunPod Serverless: consider it for variable inference demand
RunPod Serverless is a distinct option from a GPU Pod: Cybernews describes serverless endpoints with per-second billing and autoscaling. That model may suit an endpoint whose demand varies, but the comparison gives no concrete serverless price or workload-level cost estimate. Confirm how the endpoint is configured and billed, and estimate cost using your expected request volume rather than assuming that autoscaling makes inference inexpensive.
6. Vast.ai: marketplace choice with host-by-host variability
Vast.ai is an auction-based GPU marketplace. Cybernews describes a one-click template for full 671B-parameter DeepSeek models, but a template does not guarantee that a particular listing has suitable hardware, uninterrupted availability or a fixed price. Since pricing and availability vary by host, inspect the specific machine and its GPU memory before deploying. For full-model hosting, compare the actual allocation with the substantial hardware needs Alibaba Cloud describes for production use.
7. ScalaHosting: investigate custom resource allocation
ScalaHosting is included for custom resource allocation in high-performance deployments. The comparison does not state a particular DeepSeek-ready plan, GPU model, price or region. It is therefore a candidate to discuss when a tailored resource mix matters, not a pre-verified match for one of the listed model configurations. Request the GPU count and memory, system RAM, disk and billing terms in writing before committing.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
8. InMotion Hosting: bandwidth-first evaluation
InMotion Hosting is the comparison’s choice when unmetered bandwidth is the deciding factor. Bandwidth terms do not establish that a server has a compatible GPU or enough RAM and disk for a DeepSeek model. Treat it as a bandwidth-led candidate and verify compute resources independently; the available comparison does not state a specific DeepSeek configuration or price.

9. DigitalOcean dedicated inference: tune around the serving goal
DigitalOcean’s documentation describes dedicated inference, where users choose GPU resources and tune deployments for latency, throughput, cost or concurrency. That makes it relevant when you need to shape an inference service around an operational goal rather than simply rent a general VPS. The comparison does not specify a price or a particular GPU configuration, so confirm current resource choices and regional availability before sizing a deployment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a cheap CPU-only VPS run DeepSeek?
The available configuration guidance does not establish a reliable CPU-only setup, its speed or the quality of its responses. Alibaba Cloud’s minimum table specifies GPUs for every distilled model listed, including one 24GB GPU for the 1.5B, 7B and 8B models. A CPU VPS may be useful for application components around an inference service, but the supplied model requirements do not support treating a low-cost CPU-only plan as an equivalent substitute for the listed GPU configurations.
For a budget decision, first choose a model, then compare the exact allocated GPU memory, system RAM and disk with its row in the table. If the host cannot confirm the relevant hardware, do not infer suitability from CPU count, monthly price or a “DeepSeek-ready” setup label alone.

How do monthly VPS, hourly GPU and serverless billing differ?
A monthly VPS provides a recurring plan price in the cited examples, while GPU servers and GPU Pods are quoted by the hour. RunPod Serverless is described as billed per second with autoscaling. The right unit depends on whether you need a machine continuously available or expect usage to vary; none of the cited examples gives enough workload information to calculate a monthly total for a real deployment.
- Monthly VPS: compare the recurring fee with the stated vCPU, RAM and storage, and confirm whether GPU resources are part of that plan.
- Hourly GPU instance: multiply the current hourly rate by expected active hours, then account for any other charges the provider discloses. The cited snapshot rate is not a current quote.
- Per-second serverless: estimate cost from actual expected use and check endpoint scaling and billing rules; no numerical rate is supplied for the RunPod Serverless example.
- Auction marketplace: check the specific host’s price and availability rather than assuming a stable rate across listings.
What should you verify before deploying?
Use this checklist to avoid buying a plan that has enough general-purpose resources but not the hardware the model needs.
- Name the exact model. Distilled Qwen 7B and full DeepSeek-R1 have very different deployment requirements.
- Check GPU memory and count. Match both to the Alibaba Cloud configuration; do not substitute system RAM for GPU memory.
- Check RAM and disk separately. Confirm that the provider allocates enough of each for the model row and your deployment.
- Confirm the product type. Distinguish a CPU VPS, an optional or dedicated GPU server, a GPU Pod, a serverless endpoint and a marketplace host.
- Verify price and availability at checkout. The listed figures are 2026 comparison snapshots, and marketplace or hourly inventory may vary.
- Check operational fit. Review region, bandwidth, access controls, data-governance needs and who is responsible for administration. The comparison does not establish these details for every plan.
What is the practical recommendation?
For development and testing, begin with DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-7B on a configuration matching Alibaba Cloud’s single-24GB-GPU guidance. For 14B and larger distilled models, budget from the GPU count, RAM and disk shown in Alibaba Cloud’s table, then shortlist providers that can confirm those resources. Choose managed VPS hosting for administration support only after verifying GPU availability; choose GPU or serverless infrastructure when inference hardware and variable usage are the central requirements. Treat full DeepSeek-R1 as a separate infrastructure decision, not as a small VPS upgrade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a regular laptop or desktop to test DeepSeek-R1 distilled models?
The configuration table cited here specifies GPU resources but does not establish local-device compatibility or performance. Check the model and runtime’s requirements for your hardware and intended workload before downloading or relying on a local setup.
Does DeepSeek-R1 need an internet connection after it is hosted?
The hosting configurations do not specify network behavior after deployment. Whether an application needs outbound access depends on how you install the model, update software and connect other services; verify those dependencies for your chosen runtime.
How long does it take to load full DeepSeek-R1?
Alibaba Cloud’s PAI documentation says loading a large model such as full DeepSeek-R1 might take 20 to 30 minutes. Actual startup behavior depends on the deployment and should not be assumed to match that guidance in every environment.
Is Vast.ai pricing fixed across GPU machines?
No. The comparison characterizes Vast.ai as an auction-based marketplace and says prices and availability vary by host. Check the specific listing when you are ready to deploy.
