No watermark or Content Credential can stop a deepfake from being made or shared. They can provide useful clues: a credential can verify a signed record linked to a file, while a watermark can signal that content passed through a system that embeds one. Neither proves that a depicted event happened or that a caption is accurate. For a suspicious post, check provenance and signer, use a relevant watermark check, and corroborate the claim independently.
What can watermarking and Content Credentials actually do?
They help answer different questions about a file’s origin and handling; they are not universal deepfake blockers or truth detectors. A watermark is a detectable signal embedded in marked content. A Content Credential is a signed provenance record associated with content, describing information such as who signed it and, where recorded, how it was created or changed.

The distinction matters. A watermark may help identify output from a particular participating generator. A valid credential may let a verifier check whether the linked asset and signed record have changed since signing, subject to the verifier’s assessment of the signer’s trustworthiness. Neither establishes that the scene shown is genuine, that the camera faced what the caption claims, or that an audio clip’s speaker said the attributed words.
The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) describes Content Credentials as “open, tamper-evident, and user-verifiable” in its official FAQ. That describes how the credential system works; it is not a promise that the content is factual.

Does a valid Content Credential prove a video is real?
No. It can support a claim about the file’s signed provenance and integrity, but it cannot certify the truth of the event or description attached to it.
Think of a credential as a signed account of a file’s history, not a witness to reality. A verifier can assess whether a manifest is present and valid, which signer signed it, and what edits or ingredients the record discloses. A valid signature tells you that the signed record has not been altered without detection and that it is bound to the checked content according to the system. You still need to decide whether the signer is credible and whether the record covers the parts of the workflow that matter.

A credential can be meaningful even when the content is synthetic: it may document how a file was created. Conversely, an authentic camera capture can circulate without a credential. The right inference is about provenance, not whether a clip is “real” in every sense.
What happens when a credential is missing?
A missing credential means the file’s provenance is unknown from that check—not that it is fake, and not that it is genuine.

Credentials may be embedded in a file, and ordinary editing or redistribution can remove that embedded information. C2PA also supports “soft bindings,” such as watermark or fingerprint-based links to a separately stored manifest. A verifier may be able to use such a link to recover provenance, but recovery is not guaranteed for every file or transformation. A repost, screen recording, screenshot, or re-encoded upload may no longer carry the same accessible information as the original.
This is why the original file matters. If a check finds no manifest, seek the earliest available version rather than treating absence as evidence either way. If a manifest is present but its binding or signature does not validate, do not treat it as a reliable provenance record; retain the file and seek confirmation from a trustworthy source.

Can an AI watermark identify every deepfake?
No. A watermark check is useful only within the coverage of the system that embedded the mark and the detector that looks for it. A positive result can be evidence that content is associated with a participating generator; a negative result cannot rule out AI generation or manipulation.
Google DeepMind says its SynthID technology supports watermarking across images, video, audio, and text, and describes checking interfaces for supported media. Those are product-specific capabilities, not a universal detector for content made with every model. Google also describes resistance to common edits, but that should not be read as a guarantee against deliberate removal or every adversarial transformation.

Detection has limits in both directions. A detector may miss a mark after content changes or if the content was not marked in the first place. NIST’s 2024 report, Reducing Risks Posed by Synthetic Content, discusses watermark-removal attacks, detector errors, and trade-offs. It does not supply a universal current accuracy rate for all tools or media. There is no sound general percentage for how many deepfakes these methods stop.
How do watermarks and credentials work together?
They can complement each other: a credential supplies a signed account linked to content, while a watermark can provide a signal within the content itself. In C2PA’s framework, a watermark or fingerprint can also serve as a soft binding that helps locate a separately stored credential.

The technical specification explains these mechanisms; its version number is a specification identifier, not a measure of detection effectiveness. The version 2.4 plain-language explainer sets out the limits of provenance, including the distinction between a record of origin and proof of factual truth.
For a viewer, the combination can be more useful than either signal alone, but it still leaves key questions unanswered: who signed the record, whether the signer is trusted, whether the binding validates, how much of the creation and editing chain is represented, and whether the publishing service preserved or displays the information. A watermark hit is likewise only as informative as the detector’s stated coverage.

How should you check a suspicious image, video, or audio clip?
Use a sequence of checks rather than relying on one automated verdict. The goal is to establish what the available evidence says about the file and separately verify the claim it is being used to support.
- Ask for the original file. If possible, obtain the image, video, or audio file from the person or organization that published it first. A screenshot or repost may have lost metadata or other provenance information.
- Check for Content Credentials. Use a Content Credentials verifier to look for a manifest. If one is found, inspect its validation status, signer, and any disclosed edits or ingredients. Treat a valid badge as evidence about the signed record and file binding—not as a truth certificate. If nothing is found, record the result as unknown.
- Check a suspected generator’s watermark. If there is a specific reason to suspect output from a system with a watermark checker, use that system’s relevant check. Interpret a hit only within the detector’s coverage; a miss does not authenticate the file.
- Trace the claim to its source. Find the earliest available publication, ask the purported source to confirm it, and seek independent reporting or other corroboration for the person, place, date, event, or quotation.
- Escalate high-consequence claims. If the clip could affect safety, reputation, public decisions, or urgent events, do not publish or act on an automated result alone. Seek confirmation from reliable sources with direct knowledge.
This workflow follows C2PA’s position that provenance tools complement, rather than replace, fact-checking. A technical result is one piece of evidence; context and independent corroboration address the factual question.

Creators can make provenance more useful by using a participating capture or editing workflow and preserving the original file and its credential where possible. That can help later viewers assess how a particular file was created, but it is not a requirement for investigating someone else’s media and does not guarantee that every platform will retain or display the credential.
C2PA’s public conformant-products listing includes Pixel Camera as a conformant generator for JPEG images. The listing does not establish which retail Pixel handset, region, or app settings expose that workflow. It is therefore evidence about a listed product capability, not a basis for assuming every phone model supports it or recommending a purchase. Creators should confirm model- and setting-specific support with the manufacturer before relying on a capture workflow.

Which evidence should carry the most weight?
For deciding whether a claim is true, independent corroboration matters most. Credentials and watermarks can strengthen an account of where a file came from or how it was handled, but neither resolves whether its central claim is accurate.
- Best for signed provenance: a valid credential from a signer you have reason to trust, with a binding that validates and a workflow record relevant to the question.
- Best for checking a participating generator: a positive result from that generator’s applicable watermark detector, interpreted within its stated coverage.
- Best for assessing the event or claim: confirmation from the purported source and independent, credible corroboration.
No single mark prevents circulation, and no missing mark settles authenticity. Treat each result as scoped evidence, then verify the underlying claim.

What is the difference between C2PA versions 2.4 and 2.5?
They are versions of C2PA technical materials, not ratings of how well a tool detects deepfakes. The version 2.4 explainer is a plain-language guide to provenance limits, while version 2.5 is the cited Content Credentials specification.
Does SynthID check text as well as images?
Google DeepMind describes SynthID support for text as well as images, video, and audio. The coverage is specific to supported content and tools; it does not make SynthID a detector for every AI system.
Does the Pixel Camera listing tell me which phone supports provenance capture?
No. The C2PA conformant-products record identifies Pixel Camera as a conformant JPEG generator, but it does not name qualifying retail handset models, regions, or settings. Confirm device-specific availability with the manufacturer.
