Deel can run UK payroll either as a self-serve workflow or with managed support, but it does not transfer your legal responsibilities as the employer. You still need the correct employing entity, worker classification, payroll approvals and funding. A compliant run normally means calculating gross-to-net pay under PAYE, deducting Income Tax and National Insurance, sending a Full Payment Submission (FPS) through Real Time Information (RTI) on or before payday, paying HMRC by its deadline, and meeting requirements for minimum wage, payslips, holiday, pensions and statutory payments.
Deel’s UK staffing workflow documents PAYE and RTI submissions, pension auto-enrolment, National Minimum Wage checks, holiday pay, IR35 deductions, BACS files, payslips and an audit trail. The practical guide below shows how to set it up, operate each pay cycle and evaluate the real cost. Public global pricing is not a definitive quote for UK Local Payroll, so obtain a current proposal before committing.

What does Deel UK payroll actually do?
Deel provides a payroll operating layer around your chosen employing entity and PAYE scheme. Depending on scope, you can enter and approve payroll yourself or have Deel manage calculations, filings and payment preparation. You remain responsible for approving inputs, confirming that the worker is engaged through the right entity and checking that the resulting payroll is lawful.
| Capability documented for UK runs | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| PAYE and RTI | Calculate deductions and prepare the FPS that reports pay and deductions to HMRC on or before payday. |
| Pension auto-enrolment | Apply enrolment rules and provide the data needed for the workplace pension process. |
| National Minimum Wage checks | Test pay against the worker’s age-based minimum and flag an underpayment before approval. |
| Holiday pay | Apply the holiday rules and pay settings configured for the worker. |
| IR35 deductions | Support deductions where an engagement is treated as inside IR35; the status decision still needs appropriate review. |
| Agency Workers Regulations tracking | Track the 12-week point relevant to AWR treatment for qualifying agency workers. |
| Payslips and BACS files | Produce itemised payslips and payment files for the UK banking process. |
| Audit trail | Keep an evidence trail of inputs, approvals, calculations and changes. |
Deel describes its payroll product as applying local rules and filings automatically and says small and midsize businesses may be live in one to two weeks, subject to implementation scope. Treat that time as an implementation estimate rather than a guaranteed go-live date: entity setup, data quality, pension arrangements and integrations can extend it.

How does UK PAYE payroll work?
PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is HM Revenue and Customs’ system for collecting Income Tax and National Insurance from employment. Employers normally deduct those amounts from each payment, report the figures to HMRC and retain payroll records for inspection.
1. Establish the payroll relationship
Identify the legal employer, its PAYE scheme and the people who can approve payroll. The entity shown on contracts, payslips, FPS submissions and payments must be consistent. Decide whether each person is an employee, an agency worker, a contractor or another category before configuring pay.

2. Collect payroll data
For every employee, gather identity and address information, bank details, tax information, pension status, right-to-work evidence and the agreed pay frequency. Add role, start date, salary or hourly rate, normal hours, overtime rules, benefits, expenses and any authorised deductions.
3. Calculate and report each pay period
Run gross pay, taxable benefits, employee deductions and employer costs. The FPS must normally reach HMRC on or before the day the employee is paid. HMRC’s 2026–27 employer guidance says almost all employers must report online for every pay period and keep records available for inspection.
4. Settle workers and HMRC
After approval, pay workers using the selected payment rail, such as a BACS file, and pay the PAYE and National Insurance due to HMRC by the applicable HMRC deadline. Payroll approval is not complete until the funding, submission and payment steps are reconciled.
5. Issue records
Give each worker an itemised payslip, post the payroll journal to your accounting system and retain the calculations, approvals, FPS evidence and payment confirmations. The audit trail is particularly important when a correction, inspection or worker query occurs.

How do I set up Deel for a UK payroll run?
Use this sequence for implementation and repeat it for each pay cycle. The first two steps establish the legal basis; the later steps are operational controls.

- Confirm the employing entity and scheme. Record the legal employer, PAYE reference, payroll currency (GBP), pay frequency and who is accountable for HMRC filings. If you do not have a UK entity, ask Deel and a UK payroll adviser which employing arrangement is available; do not assume software alone creates a compliant employer.
- Define worker status and approvals. Classify every worker before entering rates. Set preparers, reviewers and final approvers, and document who can change salary, bank details, deductions and termination dates.
- Complete employee records. Enter identity, bank, tax, pension and right-to-work information. Check that names, dates and account details match source documents so an FPS and payment file are not rejected or misdirected.
- Configure pay rules. Add salary or hourly pay, normal hours, overtime, expenses, benefits, holiday settings, statutory payments and authorised deductions. For contractors or intermediaries, record the decision and deductions required under the applicable engagement rules rather than forcing them into an employee template.
- Run a pre-approval calculation. Compare gross-to-net results with contracts and prior periods. Check age-based minimum wage, pension eligibility, holiday accrual or pay, tax and National Insurance deductions, employer costs, one-off payments and any IR35 or AWR treatment.
- Approve, submit and pay. Approve the final register, release worker payments through the chosen rail, submit the FPS/RTI on or before payday and arrange HMRC payment by its due date. Save confirmation numbers or files in the payroll record.
- Close the period. Issue payslips, reconcile the bank and payroll journal, review variances and lock the period. Keep the audit evidence and record any post-payday correction with the reason and approval.
What UK statutory items must appear in payroll?
Deel can automate checks and calculations, but the employer must supply accurate facts and approve the outcome. UK employer responsibilities include the following.
National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage
From 1 April 2026, the published hourly minimums are:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Worker group | Hourly minimum from 1 April 2026 |
|---|---|
| Age 21 and over | £12.71 |
| Age 18–20 | £10.85 |
| Under 18 | £8.00 |
| Apprentice rate | £8.00 |
These are UK Government figures for the 2026 rates. Test the worker’s age, apprentice status, hours and the pay elements that count before approving a run; a salaried employee can still fall below the effective hourly minimum after unpaid time or deductions are considered.
Itemised payslips and lawful deductions
Employees must receive a payslip showing the required pay information and deductions. Configure tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, salary sacrifice and other deductions only when there is a lawful basis and the worker has received the required notice or agreement.
Paid leave and holiday pay
Workers are generally entitled to at least 5.6 weeks of paid holiday. Set the worker’s leave year, working pattern and holiday-pay method, then check that payroll uses the correct treatment for regular hours, irregular hours and any accrued payment on termination.
Pension auto-enrolment
Eligible workers must be assessed and, where required, enrolled into a workplace pension. Keep the pension scheme details, postponement or opt-out evidence and contribution amounts aligned between Deel and the pension provider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStatutory payments
Qualifying employees may receive statutory sick, maternity, paternity and adoption pay through payroll. Capture the qualifying dates and evidence, apply the correct rate for the period and preserve the calculation supporting the payment.
Written terms and worker protections
Provide written employment terms and pay at least the applicable minimum. Agency engagements may also require AWR 12-week tracking, while an intermediary engagement can require IR35 deductions. Deel can track or calculate these items where configured; it cannot replace the underlying status analysis.

Does Deel submit PAYE and RTI to HMRC?
Deel’s documented UK payroll and Pay & Bill workflows include PAYE and RTI submissions. Before relying on an automated filing, confirm in your proposal who is the submitting party, which PAYE scheme is used, when the FPS is released, how an employer payment summary or correction is handled and what evidence you receive.
The legal timing remains the same regardless of interface: an FPS is normally sent on or before payday for each pay period. A payroll calendar should show the input cutoff, review date, approval deadline, payday, FPS submission and HMRC payment date so a late approval cannot silently become a late filing.
Who pays HMRC when Deel runs the payroll?
The contract and employing arrangement determine who funds and submits payments. Your implementation documents should state whether Deel is preparing a payment instruction for your entity, operating a managed service under your authority or acting through another employing structure. Do not infer responsibility from a dashboard label.
Ask for a written responsibility matrix covering employee pay, PAYE and National Insurance, pension contributions, statutory payments, corrections, bank funding and HMRC correspondence. Reconcile the amount leaving your bank with the approved payroll register and the HMRC liability so a payment failure is discovered before the deadline.
How much does Deel UK payroll cost?
There is no published, definitive UK Local Payroll price in the available public material. Deel’s global pricing page displays a starting price of $599 per employee per month for an employer-of-record service, but that figure is not a UK Local Payroll quote and should not be used to budget a local payroll implementation.
Request a current UK proposal that separates recurring, one-time and usage-based charges. Ask whether the following are included:
- Implementation, data migration and PAYE-scheme setup support.
- Per-worker payroll processing and minimum monthly commitments.
- Payment execution, BACS files and foreign-exchange costs where relevant.
- Pension administration, auto-enrolment assessments and provider coordination.
- Benefits administration, statutory-payment calculations and year-end work.
- Amendments, reversals, off-cycle payrolls and termination runs.
- Integrations, reporting, audit exports and support response times.
Compare proposals on total annual cost, not just the advertised per-worker amount. A lower subscription can become more expensive when every off-cycle run, pension change or payment file is charged separately.
Do I need a UK entity to use Deel payroll?
You need a clearly identified legal employer and a PAYE-compliant operating arrangement; whether that employer must be your own UK company depends on your structure, the people you hire and the service you select. Deel’s software does not decide tax residence, permanent-establishment exposure, worker status or whether an employer-of-record arrangement is appropriate.

If you already have a UK company
Use the company’s PAYE scheme, bank account, employment contracts and pension arrangements as the system of record. Deel can centralise data and workflow while your company remains accountable for approvals, funding and compliance.
If you do not have a UK company
Ask for a written explanation of the available employing model, who appears on the contract and payslip, who files RTI, and which party bears employment obligations. Obtain UK tax and employment advice before onboarding, especially if the person will work permanently in the UK or manage local operations.
How does Deel compare with other ways to run UK payroll?
The right option depends on how much control and internal expertise you have, not on a single feature. Compare the operating models against the same decision points.
| Decision point | Deel workflow | In-house team | HMRC-compatible software | Payroll bureau |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Legal entity | You still need the correct employing arrangement. | Your organisation owns the entity and process. | Your organisation owns the entity and process. | Usually your organisation remains employer; confirm contract scope. |
| Operation | Self-serve or managed, depending on package. | Internal staff prepare and approve. | Internal staff operate the software. | Provider prepares or runs payroll for you. |
| RTI and pension handling | Documented UK PAYE/RTI and pension workflows. | Built and maintained internally. | Depends on product configuration and updates. | Defined in the bureau’s service level. |
| Implementation speed | Deel says some SMBs can be live in 1–2 weeks, subject to scope. | Often slower when hiring and building controls. | Depends on setup and migration. | Depends on onboarding queue and data readiness. |
| Auditability | Documented audit trail, approvals and exports. | Depends on your controls and systems. | Depends on software logs and your procedures. | Depends on reports and records supplied. |
| Cost structure | Per-worker and service charges; obtain a UK quote. | Payroll salaries, software and control costs. | Subscription, support and possible add-ons. | Per-run or per-worker fees plus extras. |
Before choosing, run a sample month through each proposal: normal salary, overtime, a new starter, a leaver, a pension change, an off-cycle correction and a statutory payment. Require each provider to show the approval path, filing evidence, payment controls and export format.

The wrong entity or worker status was selected
Stop the run before approval, document the facts and obtain employment-tax advice. Correct the contract and payroll setup first; changing a tax code cannot repair a fundamentally wrong employing relationship.
Pay falls below the minimum wage
Recalculate qualifying hours and pay elements, then correct the rate or hours before payday. Preserve the check showing the worker’s age band and the 1 April 2026 threshold used.

An FPS is late or contains an error
Submit the accurate information as soon as the issue is identified, retain the reason and confirmation, and ask the person responsible for HMRC submissions what correction route applies. Add a calendar control so approval occurs before the payroll cutoff.
Bank details or BACS totals do not reconcile
Pause payment, compare the approved register with the BACS file and independently verify any changed bank account. Release funds only when the worker total, net pay total and bank file agree.

What is the practical verdict on using Deel for UK payroll?
Deel is a plausible way to centralise UK payroll inputs, approvals, PAYE/RTI workflows, pension checks, payslips, payments and audit evidence when you want self-serve control or managed assistance. It is not a substitute for selecting the correct legal employer, classifying workers, funding payroll or approving statutory calculations. Treat the platform as an operating system for your payroll obligations, obtain a UK-specific commercial and responsibility statement, and test one complete payroll scenario before going live.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Deel pay UK contractors through the same payroll?
Do not place a contractor on an employee PAYE run simply because the payment is made in GBP. The engagement should be assessed first, and any contractor workflow, IR35 treatment or deduction should be documented separately from ordinary employee payroll.
What evidence should I keep after each payroll run?
Keep the approved payroll register, calculation details, payslips, FPS submission confirmation, payment or BACS file, HMRC liability reconciliation, pension output and the change log. Storing these together makes it possible to explain a net-pay difference without reconstructing the run from email.
How should a small employer test Deel before switching?
Use a parallel sample containing a normal employee, a new starter, overtime, a pension enrolment, holiday pay and a leaver. Compare gross-to-net, employer cost, payslip fields, RTI output and bank totals with your current process before authorising live funds.
Can Deel’s public price be used as a UK payroll budget?
No. The advertised global starting price relates to an employer-of-record service, while UK Local Payroll pricing depends on implementation, worker count, payments, pensions, amendments and support. Require those items in a written UK proposal.
