Neither option is universally better. Self-hosting is usually the better fit when you already have suitable hardware, want complete control, and can handle networking, updates, security, backups, and outages. Managed hosting is usually better when you want a server online without operating the underlying infrastructure, need easier scaling or multiple regions, or do not want your home connection and equipment to be a single point of failure.

The important distinction is that a dedicated server describes how the game runs, not where it runs. The same dedicated server process can operate on a computer at home, a rented virtual machine, a cloud platform, or a managed game-hosting service. Your best choice depends on the specific game, expected player load, availability target, player locations, technical skills, and the complete cost of hardware, electricity, bandwidth, maintenance, and time.

What is the difference between a dedicated game server and self-hosting?

A dedicated game server is a server process that runs separately from every player’s game client. Players connect to it remotely; no participant has to keep a playable client open to act as host. Self-hosting is an operating arrangement in which you run that process on equipment you control, such as a home computer or an on-premises server.

These terms describe different decisions:

Question What it describes Possible answers
How does the game session run? Server architecture Dedicated server process or listen server
Who supplies and operates the infrastructure? Hosting arrangement You, a cloud platform, or a managed provider
Where is it located? Physical or network location Home, office, data center, or distributed cloud region
Who handles maintenance? Administrative responsibility You, the provider, or a split between both

Epic’s Unreal Engine documentation describes a dedicated server as headless, with remote clients connecting to it. It contrasts that model with a listen server, where a player’s client also hosts the game. Epic notes that a listen server can be acceptable for casual cooperative games, while a dedicated server is suited to large-scale or competitive games; that guidance is specific to Unreal Engine and should not be treated as a rule for every title.

How does self-hosting a game server work?

With self-hosting, you install the game’s server software on your own machine, make it reachable to players, and remain responsible for its entire operating environment. You may avoid a recurring hosting invoice, but you are exchanging that invoice for equipment, electricity, network capacity, maintenance, and your own time.

What you control

  • Server files, configuration, world data, mods, permissions, and logs.
  • Operating-system updates, game-version timing, startup scripts, and restart policies.
  • Access controls, firewall rules, remote administration, and backup destinations.
  • Hardware upgrades and the physical location of the machine.

What you must provide

  • A machine that meets the game’s CPU, memory, storage, operating-system, and mod requirements for the expected player load.
  • A network path that accepts the game’s required connections and remains available when players need it.
  • Power, cooling, physical security, and a plan for hardware failure.
  • Regular backups of worlds, databases, configurations, and license or authentication data where applicable.
  • A process for testing updates before applying them to a live world.

An on-premises setup can require substantial upfront time, money, and resources. It may also lack conveniences that a provider includes, such as automated backups, dashboards, replacement hardware, or geographically distributed locations. “No monthly hosting bill” therefore does not mean “free.”

When is home self-hosting a good fit?

It is a strong candidate when your players are close to your home region, the server can be offline during household or maintenance outages, and you are comfortable troubleshooting the operating system and game. It also makes sense when you need direct access to files or unusual mods that a provider does not permit.

Existing hardware can make the economics attractive. If you need equipment, a home server computer is an optional purchase rather than a universal requirement; check the chosen game’s official server documentation and expected load first. Operators who cannot afford to lose a world may also add separate backup storage, but the storage device is only useful if backups are automated, verified, and kept independent of the server.

How does managed game server hosting work?

A managed host or cloud service supplies some combination of compute, networking, monitoring, deployment, and administrative tooling. You still configure the game and manage the player community, but the provider handles at least part of the underlying infrastructure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What managed hosting can simplify

  • Provisioning a machine and installing a supported server image.
  • Allocating more or fewer resources as demand changes.
  • Keeping the service in a data center with redundant power and connectivity.
  • Accessing logs, console controls, scheduled tasks, and restart tools through a panel or API.
  • Choosing a region closer to a dispersed player base.

Unity’s multiplayer guidance identifies reduced infrastructure burden and scaling features as potential benefits of cloud or managed services. It also warns that you trade some visibility and control for provider dependence, and that long-run costs may be higher than comparable on-premises operation.

What the provider does not automatically solve

  • Game configuration, mod compatibility, permissions, and administrator behavior.
  • Security of your account, credentials, exposed management panels, and custom scripts.
  • Whether backups are enabled, how often they run, how long they are retained, and whether restoration is tested.
  • Game-version updates, save migrations, and troubleshooting of unsupported modifications.
  • Terms that limit slots, regions, CPU time, storage, or high-bandwidth use.

Read the service’s current terms for the exact game and edition. “Managed” can mean a fully operated game service, or merely a rented virtual machine on which you still perform every administration task.

How does cloud game-server billing differ from a monthly host?

Billing models vary. In the Amazon GameLift Servers model, AWS says billing begins when capacity is allocated and the server binary launches, and ends when the instances stop. That behavior is specific to that service; it is not a universal rule for managed hosts. A conventional game-hosting plan may charge for a reserved monthly slot count even when players are absent, while a cloud deployment may charge for running capacity plus storage, data transfer, monitoring, or other components.

Which option is better for your game?

Start with the game rather than the price. A technically attractive hosting model is useless if the title does not provide a supported dedicated server, requires a particular operating system, or blocks the mods and ports you need.

Decision factor Self-hosting tends to favor Managed hosting tends to favor
Administration People willing to install, secure, update, troubleshoot, and back up everything People who want infrastructure tasks reduced or delegated
Control Direct access to files, networking, and unusual configurations A simpler interface with possible platform limits
Availability Servers that may tolerate home power, equipment, or internet outages Communities expecting a data-center connection and provider support
Player geography A mainly local group that can use one home location Players spread across regions or a need for multiple locations
Scaling A fairly stable workload and willingness to buy or configure hardware Workloads that need resources added or removed quickly
Data control Operators who require physical custody of worlds and logs Operators comfortable storing data under a provider’s terms
Cost structure Higher upfront and operating responsibility, potentially lower recurring payments Predictable or usage-based charges, with provider dependence and possible long-run premium

What game requirements must you check first?

Requirements differ by title and can change with server-software versions. Before buying hardware or a plan, confirm all of the following in the game’s official documentation:

  • Whether a dedicated server is supported at all, and whether it is a separate download, an in-game option, or an entitlement.
  • Supported CPU architecture, processor guidance, memory, storage type, operating system, and required runtime packages.
  • Ports, protocols, firewall rules, NAT behavior, and whether a public address or relay is required.
  • Supported game edition and version, mod loader, plugin framework, and save-file format.
  • Maximum players, world size, simulation settings, and how player count changes resource needs.
  • Account, licensing, authentication, or commercial-use restrictions.
  • Backup, restore, migration, and update instructions.

Foundry’s dedicated-server documentation illustrates why generic hardware advice is unreliable: memory needs depend on the game system and modules in use. Use the game’s own requirements and expected workload, not a specification copied from another title.

Are listen servers enough for some games?

Sometimes. A listen server lets one player’s client host the session, which can be adequate for a small, casual cooperative group. The host’s departure, connection quality, and client performance then affect everyone. Competitive or persistent communities generally need to examine whether the game offers a dedicated process and what authority, persistence, and administration features it provides.

What special restrictions can apply?

Rules may be tied to a specific game platform rather than to hosting in general. For FiveM, Cfx.re states that servers with more than 48 slots require FiveM Element Club Argentum or above. That limit does not establish a general slot rule for other games or hosting services; verify the current requirement for your exact server.

How should you compare the total cost?

There is no evidence-based universal cost winner without a defined game, player load, region, hardware plan, and current provider quote. Build a comparison that includes every recurring and one-time item rather than comparing a hosting invoice with zero.

Cost category Self-hosting questions Managed-hosting questions
Compute Do you already own suitable hardware? What will an upgrade cost? Is the charge fixed, usage-based, or tied to slots and resource limits?
Power and cooling How much electricity and cooling will continuous operation use? Usually embedded in the service price, but confirm the plan’s included resources.
Network Does your connection permit the traffic, ports, and upload rate? Are there data caps? Are data transfer, public addresses, and regional traffic billed separately?
Storage and backups What will local and off-site backup storage cost? Are snapshots included, retained, and restorable, or sold as an add-on?
Maintenance Budget your time for updates, monitoring, repairs, and incident response. Determine which tasks support staff actually perform and which remain yours.
Failure and replacement Can you replace a failed disk, power supply, or entire machine? What recovery time, replacement policy, and data durability does the contract provide?
Migration and cancellation You already control the files, but you must maintain exportable backups. Check export format, fees, notice periods, and access after cancellation.

On-premises operation can avoid ongoing cloud or managed-service charges, but it still has upfront and ongoing costs. Conversely, a provider can be financially sensible when your time, outage risk, or need for multiple regions costs more than the monthly fee. Calculate both cash spending and the value of the administration work you would otherwise perform.

How do you set up a self-hosted dedicated server?

The exact commands and port numbers are game-specific, so use the game’s official instructions for each step. The following sequence prevents the most common operational omissions.

  1. Confirm support and requirements. Identify the supported server version, operating system, CPU and memory guidance, storage needs, ports, player limit, mods, and license requirements.
  2. Choose the machine and location. Confirm that the hardware can sustain the expected simulation and that the machine can remain powered and ventilated. Do not buy equipment until the game requirements and player load are known.
  3. Install a supported operating system and runtime. Apply security updates, remove unnecessary services, and create a separate account for the game process rather than running it with unrestricted administrative privileges.
  4. Install the server software. Keep the server binary, configuration, save data, and logs in organized locations. Record the exact version and installation source.
  5. Configure the game. Set the world, difficulty, administrator permissions, mods, save interval, and other title-specific settings. Test with a copy of the world before opening the server publicly.
  6. Configure network access narrowly. Permit only the documented game and administration ports through the host firewall and router. Avoid exposing a management interface to the public internet when a VPN or restricted allow-list can be used.
  7. Test from outside the home network. A local connection can work even when external forwarding is broken. Test with a player or connection that is not on the same network, and verify latency, authentication, and mod synchronization.
  8. Automate operations. Create controlled startup and shutdown procedures, scheduled restarts if the game needs them, log rotation, health checks, and notifications for a stopped process or full disk.
  9. Back up and practice recovery. Copy worlds and configuration to separate storage on a schedule, retain multiple versions, and perform a restore on a test location. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
  10. Document changes. Record server versions, port assignments, administrator accounts, mods, update dates, and recovery steps so another trusted person can operate the service during an absence.

How should you evaluate a managed host?

Compare providers by the work they actually remove, not by the word “managed” on a plan page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify exact game support. Check the title, edition, current server version, mod loader, plugin support, region, and maximum players.
  2. Read resource limits. Identify allocated CPU, memory, storage, process priority, player slots, bandwidth, and what happens when a limit is exceeded.
  3. Examine backups. Confirm whether backups are automatic, where they are stored, how many versions are retained, whether they are encrypted, and how a full restore works.
  4. Check control and access. Determine whether you receive file transfer, console, logs, scheduled tasks, database access, and an export of the complete world and configuration.
  5. Review uptime and support terms. Look for maintenance windows, incident communication, support hours, response expectations, and compensation terms. Do not treat a marketing uptime number as a guarantee unless the contract defines it.
  6. Understand pricing mechanics. Check whether billing is monthly, hourly, slot-based, or usage-based, and whether storage, backups, additional regions, data transfer, public addresses, or setup are extra.
  7. Check restrictions. Identify prohibited mods, automation, high-volume traffic, commercial use, account sharing, and rules for changing versions.
  8. Plan an exit. Before committing, test how you will download the world, logs, configuration, and backups and how much notice cancellation requires.

Which choice fits common situations?

A small group playing occasionally

A listen server may be enough if the game supports it and everyone accepts that the host must be present. If persistence or independent availability matters, a small self-hosted dedicated process can work when the owner already has suitable equipment and can tolerate home-network interruptions.

A persistent community with scheduled events

Managed hosting often reduces the risk of an unattended home machine being offline and can provide dashboards, backups, and support. Self-hosting remains viable when an administrator is available, the connection is dependable, and the group values direct control over files and mods.

Players spread across countries

A data-center or cloud location closer to most players can reduce the distance that packets travel. If the community is truly distributed, compare regional availability and whether the service supports more than one deployment; a single home location may not serve every group equally well.

A heavily modded or unusual setup

Self-hosting gives you the broadest access to the operating system and files. A managed provider can still work, but only if it explicitly supports the mod loader, version pinning, custom startup arguments, and any required services.

What are the most common mistakes and how do you fix them?

Assuming “dedicated” means exclusive physical hardware

A dedicated process can run alongside other customers’ workloads on shared physical infrastructure. If exclusive hardware, compliance, or predictable performance is a requirement, ask the provider to define the allocation rather than inferring it from the product name.

Choosing hardware before checking the game

Different games and modules have different CPU, memory, storage, and operating-system needs. Start with the official server requirements and a realistic player and mod profile; then size the machine or plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Opening more network access than necessary

Expose only documented game ports, keep administration private, use strong unique credentials, and apply operating-system and server updates. Review firewall rules after every configuration change.

Counting only the monthly invoice

Include power, hardware depreciation, network upgrades, backup storage, support, maintenance time, and the cost of downtime. For a managed service, include add-on resources, data transfer, backups, and cancellation or migration work.

Assuming backups exist because a provider is involved

Ask for the retention schedule and perform a restoration test. If the provider does not offer the recovery behavior you need, maintain an independent export of the world and configuration.

Updating the live server without a rollback

Save a restorable copy, test the new game and mod versions separately, record the change, and only then schedule the production update. Keep the previous working version available where the game’s licensing and files permit it.

Ignoring account and slot rules

Some games impose entitlement or slot limits that are unrelated to whether the server is self-hosted. Check the current platform rules; for example, the FiveM rule for more than 48 slots is specific to that ecosystem.

Can you move from self-hosting to a provider, or back again?

Usually, provided the game exposes portable world and configuration files and the service permits export. Treat migration as a planned change rather than a new installation.

  1. Freeze changes and announce a maintenance window.
  2. Stop the old server cleanly so the latest world state is written.
  3. Copy the world, configuration, mods, permissions, and startup settings into a dated archive.
  4. Install the same game and mod versions in the destination environment.
  5. Restore the files, check ownership and paths, and validate configuration values that refer to the old machine.
  6. Run a private test, verify administrator access, and confirm that players can connect from outside the destination network.
  7. Keep the original archive untouched until the new server has run successfully through a normal backup and restore cycle.

Before choosing a provider, ask whether you can download all of those files. A service that makes import easy but export difficult creates avoidable lock-in.

What is the final decision rule?

Choose self-hosting when control, unusual customization, and use of existing hardware outweigh the work of operating the server. Choose managed hosting when reducing infrastructure administration, improving geographic reach, or keeping the service available beyond your home network is worth the recurring cost and provider dependence. If neither option is clearly superior, run a costed pilot with the actual game, version, mods, player count, and region, then evaluate administration time, stability, recovery, and player experience before committing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I self-host a dedicated server without buying a new computer?

Yes, if an existing machine meets the game’s server requirements and can remain powered, connected, and secure. Check CPU, memory, storage, operating-system, port, and mod requirements before assigning the machine to continuous hosting.

Does managed hosting include automatic backups?

Not necessarily. Backup frequency, retention, storage location, and restoration assistance differ by service, so confirm them in the current plan terms and test a restore yourself.

Will self-hosting always give players lower latency?

No. Latency depends on the physical locations of players, the route between networks, upload capacity, congestion, and server load. A data-center region may be closer to most players than a home connection.

What happens if my home internet uses carrier-grade NAT?

Inbound connections may not work even with router port forwarding because the address is shared upstream. Ask your internet provider about a public address or use an architecture that does not require direct inbound access, subject to the game’s support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I run a dedicated server and play on the same computer?

Some games allow it, but the combined client and server workload competes for CPU, memory, storage, and network resources. Check the title’s guidance and test under the maximum expected player and simulation load.
