Sword World 2.5, Group SNE’s long-running Japanese fantasy tabletop RPG, passed $2 million in pledges during the first 24 hours of Mugen Gaming’s BackerKit campaign for its first complete official English edition. That milestone is a first-day figure, not the campaign’s final result. When the campaign page was checked on October 27, 2026, it showed $2,755,568 pledged against a $19,890 goal, with pledges scheduled to close on November 20, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. UTC.
What did Sword World raise in its first day?
Mugen Gaming announced that “in just one day Sword World RPG has hit over 2 million dollars in pledges.” The campaign began October 20, 2026, and the later live total should be read as a separate snapshot taken October 27, rather than as the final amount raised.

The scale of the response is notable because this is not a new game chasing a trend. Group SNE first released Sword World in Japan in 1989, and ICv2 reports that the series has sold more than 10 million copies. The BackerKit project is bringing Sword World 2.5—the current edition identified by Group SNE president Hitoshi Yasuda—to English-speaking players in a complete, officially supervised release.
What is Sword World 2.5?
Sword World 2.5 is a Japanese fantasy role-playing game being localized, designed and printed in English by Mugen Gaming with supervision and cooperation from Group SNE, the original creators. The planned physical line is built around three books totaling more than 900 pages.

| Book | Purpose | Notable contents |
|---|---|---|

| Gamemaster’s Guide | Running adventures and campaigns | Guidance for the person directing the game |
| Monster Manual | Adversaries and encounters | More than 300 creatures |
The campaign also lists card packs, character cards, a starter set, slipcases, collector editions, dice, pencils, tear-away character sheets and two-sided neoprene battle mats. These are campaign products rather than evidence that every item will be stocked through ordinary retail channels after the fundraiser.
Why is Sword World called Japan’s D&D rival?
The comparison reflects Sword World’s role as a major Japanese fantasy RPG, not a claim that the games are interchangeable. A secondary account says Group SNE’s designers were influenced by Dungeons & Dragons play reports in Japan and developed their own system after TSR stopped publishing those reports; that origin story should be treated as contextual reporting rather than a complete publisher chronology.

The practical differences are clearer at the table:
| Rules axis | Sword World 2.5 | D&D comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Core resolution | Uses two six-sided dice (2d6) | D&D’s identity is centered on a d20 |
| Combat presentation | Side-based combat is the default; an advanced combat system is optional | Common D&D play frequently uses a grid and individual positions |
| Character growth | Open multiclass development | D&D uses a class-based framework with defined class progression |
Those distinctions describe the systems’ stated structures, not a full balance, setting or audience review. Players who enjoy fantasy adventuring but want a different probability curve, combat abstraction and approach to mixing abilities are the audience most likely to find the English edition interesting.

What will the English line include beyond the books?
Mugen Gaming describes a digital home called Sword World Nexus, intended to provide searchable rules and interactive character-building tools. The campaign also names Roll20, Foundry and Alchemy as planned online-play support. Those references indicate intended or in-development integrations; they do not establish that every platform or feature is already released.
For in-person groups, the physical accessories are designed to support play directly: cards can organize game information, tear-away sheets simplify convention or one-shot use, and the two-sided neoprene mats provide reusable play surfaces. The exact contents of a pledge depend on the selected campaign tier.

When does the Sword World BackerKit campaign end?
The campaign page lists November 20, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. UTC as the scheduled closing time. Its estimated shipment date is December 31, 2027, so backers should treat delivery as a long-term estimate rather than a guaranteed retail release date.

| Date | Event |
|---|---|

| October 20, 2026 | Mugen Gaming’s BackerKit campaign begins |
| First 24 hours | Pledges exceed $2 million |

What should prospective players know before backing?
- The headline number is not the final total. The $2 million statement covers the first day; the $2,755,568 figure is a later snapshot.
- This is a full localization project. The campaign is funding translation, design and printing for the first complete official English edition, rather than a small starter translation.
- Delivery is distant. The listed estimate reaches the end of 2027, and crowdfunding schedules can change.
- Digital play is planned, not fully proven. Platform support and Sword World Nexus should be checked for release status as development proceeds.
- Retail availability is unresolved. A campaign pledge is the clearest route identified for the English books while the fundraiser remains open.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does 2d6 resolution feel different from a d20?
Rolling two six-sided dice produces totals from 2 to 12, with middle results occurring more often than extreme results. That bell-shaped distribution makes routine outcomes more predictable than a single-die d20 roll, although the game’s modifiers and target numbers determine the final effect.

Can I buy the English Sword World books after the campaign?
The campaign establishes the English production run, but a later retail schedule is not confirmed. Anyone waiting for ordinary store availability should verify a retailer listing after the fundraiser rather than assume that every pledge item will receive a broad release.
Are the online versions available now?
The campaign describes support for Roll20, Foundry, Alchemy and a planned Sword World Nexus. Those statements concern intended or developing support, so availability, pricing and feature completeness may differ by platform when the books ship.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

It is the funding target displayed on the BackerKit page, against which the October 27 snapshot showed $2,755,568 pledged. Passing the goal does not convert the first-day milestone into a final campaign total or remove the possibility of schedule changes.
