For most data centres, the best answer is a layered system rather than a single technology. An online, double-conversion UPS keeps critical equipment powered without a transfer gap and corrects incoming power problems. A generator supplies energy through outages lasting hours or longer, once it starts and the transfer system connects it. A battery energy-storage system (BESS) can extend UPS ride-through, reduce generator runtime, manage peak demand and integrate renewable power, but it requires additional controls, thermal management and fire-safety engineering.

The right mix depends on measured load, required runtime, redundancy tier, fuel or charging logistics, maintenance capability, emissions rules, available space and electricity tariffs. The comparison below explains what each layer does, how to size it and where each option fails.

What does each data-centre backup option actually do?

UPSs, generators and batteries solve different parts of the continuity problem. Treating them as interchangeable leads to gaps: a generator cannot provide instant power during its start sequence, while a UPS battery sized for ride-through cannot normally sustain a multi-hour outage.

  • UPS: provides immediate, conditioned power and bridges the time until another source is available or systems shut down safely.
  • Generator: converts stored fuel into electricity for extended outages after engine start, controls and transfer equipment operate.
  • Battery/BESS: supplies electronically controlled energy quickly; its duration is set by usable stored energy and state of charge. A larger behind-the-meter BESS can also perform peak management and renewable-energy functions.

The U.S. Department of Energy defines a UPS as a combination of converters, switches and energy-storage devices that maintains load continuity when input power fails. That definition covers the power electronics and storage, not a guaranteed number of runtime minutes.

How does an online UPS protect critical IT loads?

An online voltage-and-frequency-independent (VFI), or double-conversion, UPS continuously rectifies incoming AC to DC and then inverts it back to regulated AC. The load is always fed through the inverter, so an input failure does not require a mechanical transfer and the effective transfer time is zero.

What an online UPS corrects

In addition to blackouts, a UPS can correct voltage sags, surges, frequency variation and waveform distortion. That conditioning matters for servers, storage arrays, networking gear and control systems that may reboot or fail when utility power remains present but outside their acceptable range.

How long does a data-centre UPS last?

ENERGY STAR says UPS batteries typically provide seconds to tens of minutes of energy. The actual figure depends on load, battery capacity, ageing, temperature, discharge rate and the reserve required by the design. Runtime is normally long enough for a generator to start and transfer, or for an orderly shutdown; it is not automatically a substitute for a fuel supply.

Efficiency and UPS selection

Conversion losses are a permanent operating cost. ENERGY STAR reports that certified UPS models can reduce energy losses by 30–55% compared with standard UPSs. Compare efficiency at the loads the facility will actually carry, not only at the nameplate rating, and check bypass behaviour, overload capability, short-circuit performance, harmonic limits and recharge time.

UPS components that need service

Planned work covers batteries, capacitors, fans, bypass switches, firmware, controls and connections. Battery strings can contain weak cells that remain hidden until a discharge test, so monitoring and replacement planning are as important as the inverter rating. Modular UPSs can allow a module to be serviced while the remaining modules carry the load, provided the distribution design and operating procedures support that mode.

When is a generator necessary for a data centre?

Generators are the usual long-duration layer when an outage can outlast the UPS battery. The engine starts, reaches stable speed and voltage, and then an automatic transfer switch or equivalent system connects the generator source. The UPS continues carrying the load during that sequence.

What determines generator runtime?

Runtime is governed by fuel-tank capacity, engine consumption at the actual load, fuel quality, replenishment contracts and access during a regional emergency. A large tank alone is not resilience if fuel cannot be delivered, stored safely or transferred to the day tank. Design for inspection, water contamination, temperature effects and fuel polishing where applicable.

How generators fit data-centre tiers

Uptime Institute’s tier descriptions include an engine generator in Tier I. Tier II and higher add redundant generators, fuel tanks and other capacity components; Tier III requires concurrently maintainable distribution, while Tier IV uses physically isolated, independent systems so a single failure does not interrupt the critical load. The tier label is a design objective, not proof that a particular installation will perform correctly.

Transfer, emissions and physical constraints

Specify the generator together with its transfer switches, switchgear, protection, exhaust, cooling, acoustic treatment and controls. Local air-quality permits may limit operating hours or require emissions equipment. Siting must account for vibration, noise, fire separation, fuel access, exhaust discharge and safe maintenance clearances.

Can batteries or a BESS replace generators?

Sometimes, for a defined outage duration and operating profile, but a battery-only design is not a universal replacement. A UPS battery is normally a short-duration ride-through device. A larger BESS can deliver much longer support, yet its usable energy, recharge opportunity, state-of-charge reserve and inverter limits still define the outage it can cover.

UPS battery versus behind-the-meter BESS

A UPS battery is tightly coupled to the UPS and is sized around ride-through and shutdown requirements. A BESS is a site-level system with battery racks, bidirectional inverters, controls, thermal management and safety systems. It may support resilience, peak-demand reduction, renewable integration and reduced diesel operation, as discussed in Schneider Electric’s 13 November 2024 BESS paper and an APC brief dated 16 July 2024.

What extra engineering does a BESS require?

Designers must analyse cell health, usable capacity, degradation, HVAC loads, enclosure location, fire detection and suppression, emergency response, isolation, communications and compatibility with the UPS and site controls. ASHRAE resilience guidance and local fire codes should be addressed during the facility design, not after the containers or cabinets arrive.

When a BESS is attractive

  • Utility constraints make peak-demand management valuable.
  • Renewable generation needs storage to match the data-centre load.
  • Diesel runtime, fuel deliveries or local emissions limits are concerns.
  • Load growth or a constrained grid connection makes staged capacity useful.
  • The operator can fund controls integration, testing and specialist safety maintenance.

A BESS still needs a clear operating reserve. If it is dispatched for tariff savings before an outage, controls must preserve the energy and power headroom promised to the critical load.

What is the difference between a UPS, generator and BESS?

Space and safety Electrical room and battery-safety provisions Plant room, exhaust, fuel systems and acoustic controls Enclosures, thermal management, detection and fire protection
Best fit No-break power and clean voltage for critical loads Long outages where fuel logistics are manageable Resilience combined with energy-cost or sustainability services

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) lists UPSs, PDUs, cabling and backup generators as core data-centre power equipment and notes that modular UPS deployment can improve efficiency and scalability.

How should the technologies be combined?

A conventional resilient arrangement has utility service feeding switchgear, one or more UPS power paths feeding PDUs and IT loads, and emergency generators connected through automatic transfer equipment. The UPS carries the load during utility failure and generator start; once the generator is stable, the transfer system moves the source while the UPS continues conditioning power.

  1. Separate loads by consequence: identify critical IT, essential mechanical and life-safety loads, and nonessential loads that can be shed.
  2. Provide independent paths where required: dual-corded equipment may use separate UPS and distribution paths; single-corded devices need carefully designed static transfer or rack-level arrangements.
  3. Coordinate controls: generator start signals, UPS frequency windows, breaker interlocks, load-shed stages and BESS dispatch must be tested as one system.
  4. Define recovery order: establish which cooling, networking, storage and management systems restart first and how the UPS handles inrush current.
  5. Reserve energy: prevent tariff or peak-shaving dispatch from consuming the BESS capacity reserved for an outage.

APC describes a common architecture of one or two utility feeds, one or two UPS power paths for short-term backup and emergency generators for long-term backup. The number of paths should follow the required availability tier and the actual fault tolerance of the distribution equipment.

How do I size backup power correctly?

Start with measured electrical data rather than the utility-service rating. DOE purchasing guidance calls out load, capacity, power conditioning, redundancy and required uptime, and recommends modular systems when future growth is expected.

  1. Measure present demand: record real power, apparent power, power factor, harmonics, peak transients and seasonal variation at the intended connection points.
  2. Classify the load: document critical, essential and nonessential circuits, including cooling, pumps, fire systems, security and network controls that must remain available with the IT load.
  3. Set the ride-through target: specify the time needed for generator start and transfer, plus an orderly-shutdown margin. Do not use a generic “15-minute” assumption without validating the site sequence.
  4. Calculate energy: for an illustrative 500 kW load requiring two hours, the ideal energy is 1,000 kWh before inverter, battery, temperature and reserve allowances. The installed capacity must be higher after those deratings and the required end-of-life reserve are applied.
  5. Model growth: include rack additions, higher-density accelerators, cooling changes and the date at which another UPS or BESS module will be needed.
  6. Select redundancy: decide whether the design is capacity-only, N+1, 2N or another arrangement, then verify that switchgear, fuel, controls and maintenance bypasses provide the same level of resilience.
  7. Check generator operation: size for motor starting, step loads, harmonic-producing UPS rectifiers, minimum loading, altitude, temperature and allowable voltage and frequency recovery.
  8. Verify recharge and replenishment: calculate UPS recharge time, BESS recharge under the available grid connection, fuel delivery time and the number of consecutive outage days the site must withstand.

Use commissioning measurements to confirm that the calculated design matches real load behaviour. A nameplate-only calculation can leave insufficient capacity for cooling starts, battery ageing or a failed redundant module.

What reliability and maintenance practices are required?

Power remains a leading data-centre failure risk. In Uptime Institute’s 2024 Global Data Center Survey of 97 respondents, power was identified as the primary cause of 54% of impactful incidents or outages.

Testing the complete chain

Test utility failure detection, UPS discharge and recharge, generator start, transfer and retransfer, load shedding, alarms, BESS islanding and restoration. Schneider’s ASCO bulletin recommends regular testing to verify availability and performance and cites NFPA 110 as a basis for emergency-power readiness. Tests should use documented acceptance criteria and capture start times, voltage, frequency, alarms and temperatures.

Maintenance ownership

Uptime Institute’s 2024 maintenance survey found OEM vendors maintained generators for 84% of respondents and UPS batteries for 68%. An OEM or qualified third-party plan should define response times, parts availability, firmware control, battery replacement, generator load-bank testing, fuel care and escalation during an outage.

Typical maintenance checks

  • UPS: inspect batteries and connections, review cell trends, test bypasses, clean filters, verify capacitors and exercise maintenance modes.
  • Generator: run inspections and load tests, check coolant, oil, starter batteries, belts, exhaust, fuel quality, day tanks and transfer switches.
  • BESS: monitor cell imbalance and temperature, inspect HVAC and fire systems, test isolation and controls, validate state-of-charge accuracy and review degradation.
  • Distribution: exercise breakers, inspect terminations, verify protection settings, thermographically scan connections and rehearse switching procedures.

Keep maintenance windows, bypass permissions and restart procedures current. A redundant component that cannot be safely isolated is not genuinely maintainable.

What are the efficiency, emissions, space and safety trade-offs?

UPSs consume energy continuously because they convert power even when utility service is healthy. High-efficiency certified models reduce that penalty, but their operating mode, load percentage and bypass settings still matter.

Generators have no conversion loss when idle, yet they consume fuel during tests and outages and emit pollutants locally. Exhaust routing, noise, vibration, fuel storage and environmental permits can dominate the physical design. Fuel quality and delivery access are resilience issues as well as maintenance issues.

BESS installations avoid tailpipe emissions during discharge and can reduce generator operating hours, but charging losses, HVAC consumption and battery manufacturing are not zero-impact. Thermal runaway protection, separation distances, detection, suppression, emergency isolation and responder access must be engineered for the chemistry and enclosure used.

Space planning should include service clearances and future modules, not just equipment footprints. Generator plants need fuel and exhaust corridors; BESS rooms or outdoor enclosures need thermal and fire-system zones; UPS rooms need battery access and safe working space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much do these systems cost over their life?

There is no reliable universal payback or lifecycle-cost figure. Actual cost depends on critical load, outage profile, redundancy, utility tariffs, fuel prices, local permitting, construction, service contracts, replacement intervals and whether a BESS earns demand-management or grid-service value.

Compare alternatives using the same assumptions: capital equipment and installation, electrical and civil works, fuel tanks or grid upgrades, maintenance labour, battery and engine replacement, testing, energy losses, fuel delivery, insurance, compliance and end-of-life disposal. For a BESS, model degradation and the cost of preserving an outage reserve; for a generator, model a prolonged regional outage rather than only the first day.

Which option fits different outage scenarios?

Scenario Most appropriate baseline Important design question
Milliseconds to a few minutes of disturbance Online UPS with adequate battery and power conditioning Can the UPS handle the measured transient and recharge before the next event?
Utility outage lasting tens of minutes UPS plus generator or suitably sized BESS Will the alternate source start, transfer and carry cooling and IT step loads?
Several hours or repeated outage days Generator with protected fuel logistics, often supported by UPS/BESS How will fuel, maintenance and refuelling work when roads or suppliers are disrupted?
Constrained grid or high demand charges UPS plus BESS, with generator retained where required Can controls preserve emergency state of charge while performing tariff optimisation?
High availability with concurrent maintenance Tier III-style redundant paths and capacity, or Tier IV independent systems Can every component be isolated without dropping the critical load?

What should be on the implementation checklist?

  • Measured critical, essential and nonessential load profile, including growth and motor starts.
  • Required ride-through, outage duration, recharge and fuel-resupply assumptions.
  • Target Uptime tier or equivalent availability objective and documented failure modes.
  • UPS topology, efficiency at expected load, bypass arrangement and battery end-of-life capacity.
  • Generator rating at site conditions, transfer-switch sequence, fuel storage, emissions and acoustic permits.
  • BESS chemistry and usable energy, inverter limits, HVAC, fire protection, isolation and state-of-charge reserve.
  • Protection coordination, grounding, harmonics, short-circuit ratings and selective load shedding.
  • Integrated factory, site-acceptance and periodic readiness tests with recorded results.
  • Service contracts, spare parts, vendor response times, battery replacement and fuel-maintenance plans.
  • Operator training, switching authority, emergency contacts and procedures for failed starts or alarms.

What is the practical recommendation?

Use an online VFI UPS for no-break power quality, a tested generator and transfer system for long outages, and evaluate a BESS when load growth, grid constraints, renewable integration, peak-demand costs or diesel reduction justify its controls and safety work. Size every layer from measured critical and supporting loads, match redundancy to the required tier, and fund recurring testing, battery replacement, fuel care and controls integration as part of the system—not as optional extras.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a data-centre generator be load-tested?

The exact interval is set by the adopted code, authority having jurisdiction, manufacturer and site risk assessment. The schedule should exercise the complete start, transfer and load sequence and record whether voltage, frequency, alarms and cooling remain within acceptance limits; a no-load start alone does not prove the installation can carry the facility.

What happens when a UPS battery reaches end of life?

Available runtime and peak discharge capability decline, often unevenly between cells. Replace the affected string or module under a controlled maintenance procedure, verify the charger and monitoring system, and perform a documented discharge or capacity test before returning the equipment to normal redundancy.

Can a data centre operate entirely on renewable energy and batteries?

It can be engineered for a defined outage duration, but the decision requires verified renewable production, battery degradation, weather variability, recharge capability and a reserve policy for consecutive low-generation periods. Many operators retain another firm source because seasonal or multi-day energy shortfalls exceed economical battery capacity.

Why is the automatic transfer switch so important?

The switch determines when the generator or alternate source is accepted, how sources are interlocked and how retransfer occurs. Incorrect voltage or frequency windows, poor coordination with the UPS or an untested control signal can interrupt the load even when both the generator and UPS are individually healthy.
