For dark games, calibrate the display and platform before raising a game’s brightness. Turn HDR on only when the display, platform and game support it; then use the game’s own calibration screen to reveal useful near-black detail without flattening the intended darkness. Check the game’s accessibility menu separately for motion, flashing, text and contrast options: those controls vary by title, and console-wide settings do not necessarily change how a game behaves.
What settings matter most for dark games?
Start with the conditions you actually play in and the display you actually use. There is no reliable universal brightness, gamma, peak-nit or frame-rate preset for spooky games: screens, HDR implementations, platforms and game menus differ. A setting that makes one display’s shadows readable could wash out another display’s blacks.

The goal is not to make every dark scene bright. It is to keep important shapes and movement near black discernible while preserving intentional darkness and contrast. Microsoft’s Windows HDR Calibration includes a pattern for the darkest visible detail, and its HDR troubleshooting notes that dark detail can be obscured by very low brightness and by some HDR/SDR brightness choices. Those are reasons to calibrate carefully, not evidence for a particular game-wide number.
- Display and platform: confirm the screen supports HDR and set the platform’s HDR output deliberately.
- Calibration: use the platform’s calibration tool, then the game’s own brightness or HDR calibration.
- Accessibility: inspect the game menu for text, contrast, motion and flashing options; assess system settings separately.
- Performance: choose between smoother movement and visual effects only among the modes your game and hardware actually offer.
How should I set up HDR and brightness?
Use this sequence rather than applying a preset copied from another screen. Calibration should take place in your normal viewing conditions; Microsoft’s guidance identifies an HDR-capable display as a prerequisite for its HDR setup.

- Set your room and display first. Play in the lighting you normally use, select the correct display, and check its HDR capability. Laptop and external displays do not necessarily handle brightness controls the same way, so do not assume one control or number transfers between them.
- Enable the platform’s appropriate HDR mode. Follow the Windows 11 or PS5 steps below if relevant. If HDR is not supported by the display, do not treat an HDR toggle as a remedy for dark scenes.
- Run the platform calibration. Follow the patterns or prompts for the display you selected. Calibration establishes the display output; it does not replace a particular game’s own calibration menu.
- Open the game’s brightness or HDR calibration. Follow its on-screen reference, if provided. Avoid a large brightness increase as the first response to crushed shadows: check whether platform output or display calibration is the underlying issue.
- Inspect a representative dark scene. Look for recognizable objects near black while keeping the scene’s intended darkness. If a scene still loses detail, make small changes and recheck the same scene instead of relying on a universal value.
A display may also offer a dark-area control. Samsung documents a Black Equalizer adjustment on its Odyssey G5 G55H monitor, but the existence of that adjustment does not establish that any particular level is accurate or preferable. Treat it as an optional display-specific control, not a substitute for calibration.
What should I do on Windows 11?
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > HDR, select the HDR-capable display and turn HDR on. Then run Windows HDR Calibration full-screen on that same display. Microsoft documents three patterns: one for the darkest visible detail, one for the brightest visible detail and one for maximum display brightness. The app is documented for Windows 11; it is not a generic calibration route for every PC or operating system.
NVIDIA warns that in the configuration described in its guidance, starting HDR content while Windows HDR is off can produce incorrect, dim or desaturated output. If HDR content looks unexpectedly wrong, check the Windows HDR state for the selected display before compensating by raising in-game brightness.
What should I do on PS5?
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. Choose On When Supported if you want non-HDR content to remain in native SDR; Always On converts non-HDR content to HDR output. Then open Video Output > Adjust HDR and complete the prompts. A game’s own brightness or HDR menu is a separate step.
PlayStation describes HDR as offering a wider contrast, color and brightness range than SDR. That describes the format’s capability, not a guarantee that every HDR game or display will make shadow detail easier to see. If a game looks worse after changing the PS5 output mode, compare the available output choices and the game’s own calibration rather than assuming that Always On is automatically best.

Why is my horror game too dark?
First determine where the darkness is being introduced: the room and display, the platform’s HDR output, the display calibration or the game’s own settings. A dark artistic scene is not necessarily a calibration fault, but detail that disappears unexpectedly can be a sign that the signal or brightness is poorly matched.

Verify that the selected screen supports HDR before enabling it, and confirm that the platform’s HDR mode is what you intend.
- Revisit calibration in your normal room lighting. Microsoft’s HDR guidance cautions that very low brightness and some HDR/SDR brightness choices can obscure dark detail.
- Recheck the game’s own reference screen. Platform calibration does not set every game’s brightness independently.
- Adjust cautiously. If the game’s shadow detail is still difficult to distinguish, make a modest change and inspect the same scene again. Avoid turning darkness into gray haze just to reveal every corner.
- Try a display dark-area control only if available. Its effect is display-specific, and a stronger setting is not automatically more accurate.
Should I turn HDR on for dark games?
Only when the display, platform and content support it and the output has been calibrated. HDR can provide a broader contrast and brightness range than SDR, but it is conditional rather than a universal fix for dark scenes.
On PS5, On When Supported preserves native SDR output for non-HDR content, while Always On converts that content to HDR output. On Windows 11, enable HDR for the selected HDR-capable display and calibrate it with the Windows HDR Calibration app. If a game appears dim or desaturated, check the system HDR state and the game’s own settings before raising brightness substantially.
Do not interpret HDR as a promise of more visible shadows in every title. The useful test is whether important near-black detail remains visible on your actual display without sacrificing the scene’s contrast.
How do I choose performance or quality mode?
There is no universal winner. A performance mode generally prioritizes smoother movement, while a resolution or quality mode prioritizes graphics quality; which choices exist depends on the specific game and hardware. If camera movement or frame pacing is uncomfortable, try a supported performance option. If visual effects and detail matter more, compare the quality option in that game.

Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake 2 FAQ confirms HDR, FSR2 and DLSS support and describes different console mode choices. Its PS5 Pro section, in a 2024 update, states targets of 30 fps with ray tracing in Quality mode and 60 fps in Performance mode. These are publisher-stated mode targets, not independently measured results or promises for other platforms. Remedy says the game offers performance and quality choices on PS5 and Xbox Series X, but no performance mode on Xbox Series S.
When comparing modes, consider both how smoothly the camera moves and whether the visual effects help or hinder your ability to read dark scenes. A named mode is not proof that it will feel best on every screen or suit every player.
Which accessibility settings should I check?
Check the game’s own accessibility menu rather than assuming system settings control every game feature. Options are title-specific. God of War Ragnarök is one documented example of individual motion, flashing, subtitle and navigation controls; its menu demonstrates what to look for, not what every dark game includes.
Motion and camera movement
Look for separate controls for motion blur, camera shake or sway, and a persistent center dot or reticle. These can address different sources of discomfort or difficulty, so inspect the individual options rather than expecting one toggle to change them all. PS5 also has a system-level Reduce Motion control for console display movement; it should not be treated as a universal switch for camera shake inside games.
Flashing and bright effects
Check the specific game’s accessibility options and warnings for a reduced-flashing control. Some games document such an option, but it is not safe to assume every title has one. A color filter or HDR choice is not a substitute for a game’s flashing controls and cannot be promised to prevent a medical event.

Subtitles, captions and navigation cues
Inspect the game’s subtitle settings for size, background and speaker identification. Where offered, also check captions for non-dialogue cues and directional indicators. These can be separate options rather than a single subtitle toggle. PS5 game presets include subtitles in supported games, but console and game support varies.
System closed-caption controls on PS5 and Xbox are documented for supported media. That does not mean they guarantee captions in every game; check the game itself for dialogue subtitles and sound-effect captions.
Text size, contrast and color distinctions
Try text sizing, high contrast, color correction, zoom or magnification against the actual game menus and play area. A system feature may have a narrower scope than its name suggests: PS5 says Invert Colours disables HDR, while Xbox describes its system high-contrast option specifically for navigating built-in apps. Check for an in-game high-contrast mode separately if you need it.

Physical controls
Players who also need adaptable input can consider the Xbox Adaptive Controller, which Microsoft documents as supporting Xbox consoles and Windows PC gaming with remappable external inputs. It addresses control access, not dark-scene visibility, so it belongs alongside rather than in place of display and game-setting adjustments.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do system settings differ from game settings?
System and game options operate at different scopes. A console can change its video output or interface behavior, but a game controls whether it provides its own calibration, subtitle styling, reduced-flashing option or camera controls.

How can I compare settings without losing the game’s atmosphere?
Change one setting category at a time, and compare the same scene under the same room and display conditions. This is a practical way to identify which layer affects the result; it is not a measured calibration method or a recommendation for any fixed value.

- Keep the change only if it improves the specific issue without erasing useful contrast or creating a different accessibility problem.
Compare games and modes on the axes that matter to your situation: native HDR support, near-black detail, smoothness versus effects, whether an option is game-level or system-level, and whether the particular accessibility feature exists. No single numeric setting is established as best across titles, screens and platforms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a color filter to make flashing scenes safe?
No color filter can be promised to prevent a medical event. Check the game’s own warnings and reduced-flashing option, and follow any guidance appropriate to your health needs.
Does HDR calibration change every game’s brightness?
No. Platform calibration sets output for the selected display, while a game may have its own brightness or HDR calibration controls. A title without such controls will not gain a game-specific adjustment from the platform tool.
Will subtitles show sound effects as well as dialogue?
Not necessarily. Some games separate dialogue subtitles from captions for non-dialogue cues, and some may not offer sound-effect captions at all. Inspect the title’s own subtitle and accessibility menus.
