Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5 does not require a new playthrough. CD PROJEKT RED released the free Edgerunners 2 Update on October 22, 2026 for PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Base-game owners do not need Phantom Liberty or the Ultimate Edition. Your existing progress should continue, but a modded save can still contain changes that cause crashes, quest errors or interface problems. Back up your saves before disabling mods, cleaning an installation or changing versions. The in-game mod.io catalog also does not certify every older PC mod, so compatibility remains the responsibility of each mod author.
What is Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5, and who gets it?
Update 2.5 is the free Edgerunners 2 update for the base game. The publisher’s October 22 launch announcement lists PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. It says the update is free for base-game owners, does not require Phantom Liberty or the Ultimate Edition, and does not force a new character or campaign. The later launch announcement is the current availability reference; an earlier preview described a later rollout for Switch 2 and the Mac App Store.

Do I have to start over after Update 2.5?
No. CD PROJEKT RED’s FAQ says, “The update doesn’t require you to start a new game, so you can keep playing wherever you last left off.” That means an ordinary, unmodded playthrough can be loaded and continued. It is not an absolute promise that every save file will be healthy: a save altered by a broken or removed mod can still fail independently of the update.

Update 2.5 groups saves by playthrough in the Load Game menu and marks modded saves with an icon. Treat that marker as a warning about the save’s history, not as proof that a particular mod is defective.

How should I back up saves before changing mods or reinstalling?
On Windows, copy your save folder to a separate drive or cloud location before disabling mods, deleting game data or starting a clean installation. CD PROJEKT RED identifies the default location as %userprofile%Saved GamesCD Projekt RedCyberpunk 2077.

- Exit the game and its launcher completely so no save is being written.
- Paste the entire
Cyberpunk 2077save folder into a clearly named backup location, such as an external drive. - Keep at least one untouched copy. Do not rely only on a synchronized folder that could propagate a deletion.
- Record which mods and versions were enabled when the backup was made; this helps you reproduce a working loadout.
- Only then verify files, disable mods, remove mod frameworks or follow a clean-install procedure.
CD PROJEKT RED’s clean-install guidance warns that cleanup can involve save and application-data locations. Never delete those directories before the backup is confirmed. If a problem began after mod use, first test a copy of the installation with mods disabled; if the problem remains, try a save from before the mod was introduced.

Are older PC mods compatible with Update 2.5?
Not automatically. The new in-game mod.io menu is a distribution and subscription route; it is not a compatibility certificate for older, manually installed PC mods or for every dependency in a mod list. Check the creator’s release notes, required frameworks and supported game build one item at a time.
Using the built-in mod.io menu
- From the main menu, open Mods.
- Connect your CD PROJEKT RED account to mod.io when prompted.
- Subscribe to a mod from its page.
- Restart the game if requested.
- Return to the menu and confirm the mod is checked under Installed.
Mod pages can show an Available on consoles tag. That tag indicates console eligibility for that entry; it does not make unrelated PC files or dependencies safe to install. A save created while mods are enabled receives the modded marker.

Manually installed PC frameworks
Manual installations remain a separate version-matching problem. The Cyber Engine Tweaks maintainers list version 1.38.0 as supporting game patch 2.5 and game version 3.0.88.46235, and state that this release no longer supports earlier game patches. That confirms the framework’s stated support only; a mod that depends on it may still require its own update, and other frameworks can have different requirements.
Before restoring a loadout, check every creator page for a 2.5-compatible release and verify dependencies. If the game launches only after a particular framework is removed, do not assume every dependent mod is safe to re-enable.

Do console mods disable trophies and achievements?
Yes, when you play a modded save on a console. CD PROJEKT RED states: “On consoles, Trophies and Achievements are disabled on modded save files.” The documented blanket rule applies to console play; the publisher does not state the same rule for PC, so do not extend the console restriction to every PC save.
The safest way to preserve console trophy progress is to keep an unmodded save separate from any modded playthrough. Before loading a modded save on a console, check the Load Game icon and understand that disabling a mod later does not prove that the save has reverted to an unmodded state.

Can a modded PC save move to PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2?
Cross-progression requires the updated game, a connected CD PROJEKT RED account and cross-platform saves enabled. For a modded transfer, both the source and target platforms need the same compatible enabled mods. Account-synced subscriptions alone do not guarantee that result.

Console-incompatible mods are ignored on a console, and a target save may fail to load correctly when its required content is missing. Before transferring, compare the enabled list on both platforms, remove anything without a console-eligible version and keep an untouched unmodded save as a fallback. On consoles, a save that remains marked as modded also carries the trophy and achievement restriction.

Why will Cyberpunk 2077 not launch after the patch?
A launch failure after Update 2.5 is often a mod, dependency or driver conflict rather than evidence that every save was wiped. Work through the least destructive checks first and preserve saves before any cleanup.
- Separate modded from unmodded testing. Disable or unsubscribe in-game mods and temporarily remove manually installed frameworks according to their authors’ instructions. If the game starts, re-enable items individually to identify the conflict.
- Update or clean-install the graphics driver. Use the driver maker’s current package and its clean-install option when available.
- Verify game files. Run the launcher or store’s file-verification command before deleting installation folders.
- Disable overlays and unnecessary background applications. Overlay hooks can conflict with a new executable or graphics API.
- Run the built-in benchmark. In the game, open Settings → Graphics → Run Benchmark and save the result for comparison after each change.
- Use a pre-mod save. If quests, menus or loading remain broken, test a save created before the problematic mod was introduced.
- Clean-install only after backing up. Follow CD PROJEKT RED’s procedure and protect both the save folder and application data.

Does Update 2.5 improve FPS?
CD PROJEKT RED announces optimizations, including work for ray tracing and PlayStation 5 Pro, but its 2.5 notes do not publish a comparable before-and-after FPS figure. You should not treat a new feature ceiling as a measured frame-rate increase, and generated frames are not the same as a higher base render rate.

The published minimum and recommended FPS targets are system-requirement targets introduced from Update 2.0, not results from a 2.5-versus-2.31 comparison. For a regression on your PC, use the benchmark after each change and report the configuration with the game’s support request rather than assuming a universal patch result.

What is the new glasses-free 3D mode, and can it fix low FPS?
Glasses-free 3D is an optional hardware path, not a performance cure. CD PROJEKT RED requires a compatible Samsung Odyssey 3D monitor as the primary PC display, an up-to-date Odyssey 3D Hub and 4K output.
- 3D mode does not support frame generation.
- 3D mode does not support windowed play.
- The Motion Comfort control balances perceived depth against viewing comfort.
Check the exact monitor model and its current Hub requirements before buying hardware; the support article does not establish compatibility for every 3D display.

Can I roll back from Update 2.5?
CD PROJEKT RED says only the latest game version is fully supported. Its rollback article documents legacy patch selection on Steam and GOG, while Epic is not documented as allowing a revert. The cited instructions do not document a supported 2.31 option, and they do not promise that a save newly written under 2.5 will work safely on an older build.
Do not roll back as a first response to a mod problem. Back up saves, identify the exact version required by each mod and confirm the store-specific procedure before changing branches. A rollback can leave a save newer than the executable that is trying to read it.

- Confirm the game has updated to the current build for your platform.

Do I need Phantom Liberty to use the Edgerunners 2 update?

What does the modded icon in Load Game mean?

Can I use a 2.5 save after rolling back?
