No. You do not need to finish Cyberpunk 2077 or watch either Edgerunners series before starting Clampdown, the new side quest added in the free Edgerunners 2 Update 2.5. The actual unlock path is to complete The Heist, finish two gigs for Wakako, and then wait for her message. You also need the base game with Update 2.5 installed; Phantom Liberty, the Ultimate Edition, a new save, and a separate quest purchase are not required. If you want the story in chronological order, play Clampdown before watching Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. Watching the anime first is still a valid choice.
What exactly is Clampdown?
Clampdown is a side quest introduced by Cyberpunk 2077’s free Edgerunners 2 Update 2.5. It connects the game to the new, standalone Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime rather than serving as a requirement for the 2022 series. CD PROJEKT RED describes the mission as Team King’s last job before the show, involving King, Meshuga, Miguel and Emily. A developer-authored Xbox Wire account places V’s encounter with Weak Kingsley and the crew at Night City Prison, but the mission’s outcome is best discovered in the game.

The update is designed as an optional story for players who have reached a particular point in the campaign, not as an endgame epilogue. It can be added to an existing playthrough once its conditions are met.
What do you have to do to unlock Clampdown?
CD PROJEKT RED’s published unlock list contains three requirements. There is no additional anime-viewing check, Phantom Liberty objective or demand to complete the main story.

These conditions come from the publisher’s official announcement, which you can read at CD PROJEKT RED’s Update 2.5 overview. The announcement does not specify a waiting duration, a required district, a phone action or a fourth mission, so do not treat unofficial timing tips as mandatory steps.
Do you need to finish Cyberpunk 2077’s main story?
No. The Heist is the campaign checkpoint, not the ending. Once that mission is complete, two Wakako gigs and her follow-up message are enough to make Clampdown available. You can therefore play it during a normal first run rather than rushing through every main job.
Because the requirement is tied to a story milestone, a save that has already passed The Heist can continue toward the two-gig condition. You do not need to start over. A player who has finished the campaign can also access the quest, provided the game is updated and the Wakako requirement has been satisfied on that save.
Do you have to watch Edgerunners before playing the quest?
No. Watching is a preference, not an unlock condition. The recommended order depends on which story experience you want:
- For chronology: play Clampdown first, then watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. The quest is set before the anime’s story.
- If you already watched the anime: play the quest afterward for another viewpoint on the crew and Night City.
- If you mean the original Edgerunners series: it is not listed among the game requirements. Familiarity may add context, but CD PROJEKT RED presents Edgerunners 2 as a standalone series with a new cast.
Joao De Mello, a PR Manager at CD PROJEKT RED, gave the chronology recommendation directly: “So, play the quest before watching the anime, and you’ll have a little extra context going into Episode 1.” His guidance appears in the Xbox Wire article about Update 2.5. It is advice for story order, not a warning that the quest will be inaccessible after you watch.

How do the game and anime release dates affect the order?
Release order and story order are different here. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premiered on October 20, 2026, while Update 2.5 arrived on October 22, 2026, so the show appeared first in the real world. The quest is nevertheless positioned as a prequel to Episode 1. CD PROJEKT RED’s premiere announcement confirms the dates and describes the new series as ten episodes; see the company’s announcement.
If avoiding foreknowledge matters to you, use the in-universe sequence—Clampdown, then the anime—rather than the order in which the products launched. If you have already streamed the series, nothing is “ruined” in the game: the quest still supplies a different perspective and its own gameplay context.
Do you need the original Edgerunners anime for context?
No viewing prerequisite has been published for the original series. The new show has a separate cast and is described by CD PROJEKT RED as standalone. The game’s stated unlock steps mention only in-game progress and Wakako’s gigs, so treating the 2022 anime as required would overstate the evidence.
There is still a difference between “required” and “helpful.” A returning fan may recognize Night City’s tone and themes more quickly, while a newcomer can follow the quest without homework. If you want maximum context without committing to a full rewatch, start with the game’s own character introductions and let the mission establish its crew.
What do you need to buy?
Existing owners of the base game need to buy nothing for Clampdown. Update 2.5 is free, and the quest is part of that update. Phantom Liberty is not required, and neither is the separately sold Ultimate Edition. A new save is optional rather than mandatory.

For a first-time buyer, the base game is the essential product. The Ultimate Edition bundles the base game with Phantom Liberty, but that expansion does not unlock Clampdown; choose it only if you also want the expansion’s separate content. CD PROJEKT RED announced a physical Nintendo Switch 2 edition on a 64 GB game card containing both the base game and Phantom Liberty in its product announcement.
Which platforms have Update 2.5?
As of October 30, 2026, the official update FAQ lists PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Xbox One is not listed for Update 2.5, so an Xbox One copy should not be expected to receive Clampdown.
There is a timing inconsistency for Nintendo Switch 2. CD PROJEKT RED’s dated October 22 release post says the update is out on Switch 2, while the separate update landing page still describes Switch 2 availability as coming soon. Before promising immediate access to a buyer, check the actual download or store listing on the console. The release notice is at the publisher’s “out now” post.
How do you start Clampdown in an existing save?
Use this order, stopping only when the next condition is complete:

- Verify The Heist. Your journal should show that the mission is complete. Do not confuse reaching an earlier prologue objective with clearing this checkpoint.
- Complete two Wakako gigs. Finish two jobs from Wakako; the publisher does not require a particular pair in its unlock summary.
- Wait for Wakako’s message. The message is the trigger named by CD PROJEKT RED. No official waiting time, travel location or manual call has been specified.
- Follow the new quest entry. Once the message has arrived, select Clampdown in the journal and proceed at your own pace.
If it still does not show, recheck the update version and count only completed Wakako gigs after confirming The Heist. Then allow the game’s normal message trigger to occur rather than repeatedly changing locations based on an unverified timer. An older save does not by itself invalidate the quest.

What story information can you safely know beforehand?
The spoiler-safe premise is that V crosses paths with Weak Kingsley and Team King at Night City Prison. Associate Game Director Paweł Sasko explained that the team wanted the game to acknowledge its connection to the new series directly: “I wanted the game to acknowledge that connection directly.” That limited statement appears in CD PROJEKT RED’s developer blog, which otherwise carries spoiler warnings.
The quest also adds collectible-style rewards. Update 2.5’s notes identify a five-piece King-themed gear set earned during Clampdown, and the developer-authored Xbox account mentions Weak’s Coronation revolver. These are in-game rewards, not separate merchandise or purchases.

No. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Mission Kit is a physical tabletop starter product from R. Talsorian Games, not downloadable content for Cyberpunk 2077. Starting Cyberpunk 2077 for the first time
Install Update 2.5, play through The Heist, complete two Wakako gigs and start Clampdown when her message arrives. Watch Edgerunners 2 afterward if you want the recommended prequel-first sequence without interrupting your first-run momentum.
Already watched Edgerunners 2
Continue with your existing save and complete the in-game conditions. The quest remains worthwhile as a playable account of the crew’s earlier job, even though the anime’s release came first.

Finished the main campaign
Update the game, check the Wakako-gig requirement on the save you intend to use, and wait for the message. You do not need to replay the campaign or purchase the expansion simply to reach this side quest.
Only interested in the anime
You can watch the series without touching the game. The game quest is an optional companion story, not an episode prerequisite or a required recap.

Clampdown is gated by game progress, not by a viewing assignment: Update 2.5, The Heist, two Wakako gigs and her message are the complete published path. Play it before Edgerunners 2 for chronological context, or play it afterward if you have already watched; either order is supported.
