CVS is trying to make routine pharmacy trips feel more like a treasure hunt. Its fall 2026 assortment adds rotating Pokémon trading cards, blind-box collectibles, sensory toys, nostalgic beauty collaborations and limited-time snacks to participating stores and CVS.com. The goal is to give customers a reason to browse even when they did not arrive with a front-store item in mind.

This borrows the surprise-and-scarcity merchandising mechanism associated with Costco and Marshalls, not their warehouse or off-price business models. CVS is testing whether frequent product refreshes can increase visits and add items to baskets while its pharmacy remains the main business. Availability, timing and selection vary by location, and supplies are limited.

What is CVS’s “treasure-hunt” strategy?

CVS’s strategy is to use unexpected, seasonal and limited-time merchandise to create discovery during an otherwise practical shopping trip. The company announced the fall 2026 assortment on October 23, 2026, describing frequent refreshes, seasonal launches and limited-time drops at participating CVS Pharmacy stores and CVS.com.

Interim Chief Merchandising Officer Zach Dennett said, “There’s something exciting about finding a product you weren’t expecting during an everyday shopping trip.” In practice, that means a customer coming for a prescription, toothpaste or pain reliever may also see products that are unavailable—or different—on a later visit.

What shoppers may find

  • Pokémon trading cards
  • Nook Nook Series 1 blind boxes
  • Squishy Potato, Plush Sugar Ball, Fried Chicken Squish and Spinner Ball toys
  • Joyward Halloween Squishes
  • CVS-owned Well Market seasonal snacks
  • Disney and Peanuts beauty collaborations
  • Dunkin’ pumpkin-spice coffee
  • Oreo limited-edition cookies
  • Wonka gummies, Magic Garden Ropes and Tate’s Pumpkin Spice Cookies

These are announced assortment examples, not a promise that every store will carry every item. CVS says selection varies by participating location and while supplies last.

Why is CVS selling Pokémon cards and collectible toys?

Collectibles give CVS a way to reach shoppers beyond immediate health needs and to encourage repeat visits. CVS cites a survey in which 19% of adults said they had recently bought Pokémon cards for themselves; the release does not state when that survey was conducted. Circana, as cited by CVS Health, reported that adult toy spending increased 12% year over year to $1.8 billion in the first quarter of 2025, reaching $1.8 billion.

Blind boxes and squish toys also fit a scarcity-driven format: customers do not always know which character or design they will get, and a rotating display can create urgency without requiring a permanent expansion of the core assortment. The same logic applies to seasonal coffee, candy and cookies that disappear after a particular holiday or flavor window.

Is CVS actually trying to become Costco or Marshalls?

Only in merchandising technique. Costco uses a broad warehouse assortment and membership value to make visits worthwhile, while Marshalls relies on rapidly changing branded deals and off-price scarcity. CVS is applying the narrower idea of surprise: refresh the shelves often enough that browsing can produce an unplanned find.

Shopping factor CVS Costco Marshalls
Primary mission Prescriptions, health services and convenient neighborhood purchases Warehouse stock-up and membership shopping Off-price apparel, home goods and rapidly changing deals
Discovery trigger Collectibles, seasonal drops, nostalgia and convenience items Broad warehouse surprises and rotating pallets Scarce branded merchandise and changing inventory
Value signal ExtraCare pricing, promotions and proprietary brands Membership value and bulk economics Perceived discount on opportunistic finds
Store economics Smaller, local pharmacies and front stores Large warehouse scale Off-price inventory turnover
Proof still needed More repeat traffic and incremental baskets without weakening the pharmacy mission Established warehouse destination model Established off-price treasure-hunt model

TheStreet quoted Costco CEO Ron Vachris saying, “We never want to compromise the treasure hunt of Costco.” It also carried former Ross Dress for Less CEO Barbara Rentler’s description of the off-price approach as being about “the value you’re putting on the floor, the products and the value.” CVS is borrowing the customer-facing effect, not claiming the same operating model.

Why does CVS need more reasons to browse?

CVS is managing a store-footprint reset while front-store sales remain much smaller than pharmacy revenue. Its 2025 Form 10-K records 243 community locations closed, including 221 retail stores connected to the restructuring plan; 87 locations opened and five relocated during the year.

CVS measure Reported figure Period or qualification
Pharmacy share of Pharmacy & Consumer Wellness revenue 82.9% 2025
Front store and other share 17.1% 2025
Proprietary-brand products Approximately 4,500 2025
Proprietary-brand share of front-store revenue Approximately 20% 2025
Retail pharmacy locations Approximately 9,000 As of June 30, 2026
Walk-in and primary-care clinics More than 1,000 As of June 30, 2026

Those figures explain the balancing act. Discovery merchandise is strategically visible, but pharmacy drives the overwhelming majority of the combined revenue reported for the segment. CVS needs front-store products to add sales and visits without slowing prescriptions, crowding out health categories or making stores harder to navigate.

How is CVS changing the store experience?

A 2024 prototype in Millis, Massachusetts, tested a circuit-style layout that moved shoppers through more of the assortment instead of directing them straight to a back-wall pharmacy. CVS centralized colleagues so staff could greet customers, simplified the assortment and moved wellness, beauty and healthy snacks closer to the entrance.

The prototype removed about 18% of its assortment while CVS evaluated which categories to restore or expand. Its intended sequence was practical: make the planned purchase easy to find, then provide time and visibility for new brands, pet-wellness products, convenient gifts and other discoveries. Chief Merchandising Officer Musab Balbale said colleagues are “incredibly important to the customer experience.”

Can this strategy compete with Costco, Marshalls and online shopping?

It could help CVS defend visits that might otherwise be replaced by delivery or online ordering, but the available evidence does not show a completed sales test. The operational question is whether a collectible or seasonal display creates an additional item in the basket, a second visit or a stronger reason to choose a nearby CVS over an online order.

Retail reporter Maurie Backman, quoted by TheStreet, raised the central objection: “Most people who shop at CVS run in for necessities like shampoo or pain relievers.” That behavior limits how much browsing CVS can create. A customer who wants a prescription filled quickly may not become a destination shopper merely because a display contains blind boxes.

CVS also has to manage inventory complexity. Limited drops can sell out quickly, while slow-moving novelty products consume space in small stores. Location-specific availability means an item shown online or in an announcement may not be present at a nearby branch. The strategy therefore works best as an incremental layer on top of pharmacy convenience, not as a promise that every CVS will resemble a warehouse club or off-price department store.

What should shoppers expect from the fall 2026 assortment?

  1. Check the participating location. CVS says stores, timing and selection vary, so a product listed in the announcement may not be stocked locally.
  2. Expect seasonal turnover. Halloween squishes, pumpkin-spice products and limited-edition cookies are tied to short selling windows.
  3. Plan for limited supply. Collectibles and special collaborations may sell out rather than remain part of the regular assortment.
  4. Use CVS.com as a second check. The assortment is rolling out both in stores and online, but online availability does not guarantee local store inventory.

What will determine whether the plan works?

  • Repeat visits generated by genuinely changing merchandise
  • Incremental baskets rather than purchases that simply replace existing front-store items
  • Enough margin and turnover to justify display and replenishment work
  • A store layout that preserves fast access to prescriptions and health essentials
  • Consistent service from colleagues who can guide shoppers without adding friction

CVS has announced the merchandising direction and the products it intends to use, but no source establishes a finished sales result or proves that the company can become a Costco- or Marshalls-scale destination. The meaningful test is narrower: can surprise merchandise make a necessary pharmacy trip a little more engaging and a little more valuable without diluting CVS’s health identity?

Frequently Asked Questions

Will every CVS carry the Pokémon cards announced for fall 2026?

No. CVS says the assortment is limited to participating stores and CVS.com, with local selection and timing varying. Products are available while supplies last, so a nearby store may have a different assortment or no inventory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are CVS’s blind boxes and squish toys permanent products?

They are presented as rotating and seasonal merchandise rather than guaranteed permanent lines. CVS can replace a drop with another collectible, holiday item or collaboration as the selling calendar changes.

Does CVS require a membership to buy these products?

The announcement does not describe a membership requirement. CVS frames the assortment as available through participating CVS Pharmacy stores and CVS.com, subject to the retailer’s normal purchase and availability policies.

Why would a pharmacy prioritize toys and snacks during store closures?

The merchandise is intended to improve the productivity of remaining locations by encouraging browsing and larger baskets. That goal is being pursued while CVS closes selected sites and tests layouts, so it is not evidence that every store will receive more floor space.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
