If Windows reports “Windows can’t find the cvirte.dll,” “the cvirte.dll is missing,” or says an executable is linked to a missing export in cvirte.dll, the affected application is usually missing the LabWindows/CVI Run-Time Engine on that computer. The direct fix is to install the runtime version that matches the LabWindows/CVI environment used to build the program, preferably from National Instruments (NI) or from the application publisher.
This is normally an application-deployment problem, not proof that Windows itself has lost a core system DLL and not the same problem as a missing Visual C++ Redistributable file. cvirte.dll is part of the LabWindows/CVI Run-Time Engine. A LabWindows/CVI program can run on its developer’s computer because that computer already has the engine installed. When the program is copied to a different target computer without its runtime dependency, Windows cannot load the executable and displays the DLL error.
NI’s support guidance describes these messages:
- “Windows can’t find the cvirte.dll.”
- “The cvirte.dll is missing.”
- An executable is linked to a missing export in
cvirte.dll.
The wording can vary slightly between Windows versions and applications, but the important clue is the filename. The runtime belongs to LabWindows/CVI, so replacing it with an unrelated Windows or Visual C++ component does not address the dependency.

Why does cvirte.dll work on one computer but not another?
The usual difference is the development computer versus the target computer. The developer has LabWindows/CVI or its Run-Time Engine installed; the target computer has only the application executable. If the application installer did not deploy the engine, the target cannot resolve the executable’s imports.
A second possibility is a version mismatch. The runtime must match the LabWindows/CVI development environment that produced the executable. Installing an arbitrary runtime, even one with the same filename, may leave the application unable to start.

What if a different program shows the same filename?
NI’s documented case concerns a LabWindows/CVI executable. If another program displays a cvirte.dll message, identify that program and ask its publisher which runtime it requires before installing anything. Do not assume that every application using the filename was built with the same LabWindows/CVI version or deployment method.

1. Confirm the required LabWindows/CVI version
Find the runtime requirement in the application’s documentation, release notes, installer, or support response. If you are not the developer, contact the publisher and provide the exact error text and Windows edition. Ask specifically for the LabWindows/CVI Run-Time Engine version that matches the build.
Do not choose a package solely because it is the newest one listed. Compatibility is tied to the development environment that built the executable, and the correct version can differ between two programs that both use cvirte.dll.
2. Get the Run-Time Engine from an official source
Download the matching engine from NI’s current distribution or obtain the package directly from the application’s publisher. NI identifies the missing LabWindows/CVI Run-Time Engine as the cause in this scenario and lists installation of the matching runtime as the remedy.
Runtime package names and availability can change. Use the current instructions for your application and Windows version rather than relying on an old installer saved from another project. 3. Install the runtime, then restart the application
Close the affected program and run the official runtime installer with an account permitted to install software. Follow its prompts, allow the installation to finish, and restart the application. If Windows asks for a reboot, complete it before testing.
Test the original executable, not a copied DLL. A successful launch indicates that Windows can now resolve the LabWindows/CVI runtime dependency. If the same message remains, verify the version requirement and whether the application uses a private deployment; installing a different package at random can make diagnosis harder.

4. Ask the publisher for a corrected installer when you did not build the program
NI’s other supported route is for the application distribution to include the Run-Time Engine. Contact the software publisher and request a corrected installer or its official runtime instructions. Include:
- The application’s name and exact version.
- Whether the computer runs Windows 11 or Windows 10, and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit if the publisher asks.
- The full cvirte.dll error wording.
- Whether the same installer works on another computer.
The publisher can tell you whether to install a shared engine on Windows or use an application package that keeps the runtime with the program. This is safer than trying to reconstruct the installation from files copied out of another computer.
5. If you maintain the application, deploy the runtime with it
Developers who distribute a LabWindows/CVI executable should follow NI’s deployment documentation. Private deployment can require cvirte.dll together with its cvirte resources directory in the application directory, as well as other runtime components required by the build.
Do not package only the DLL if NI’s deployment instructions call for supporting files. 6. Use DISM and System File Checker only for broader Windows corruption
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) before System File Checker (SFC) when Windows system files may be missing or corrupted. These tools do not install the LabWindows/CVI Run-Time Engine, so use them only when you also have evidence of wider Windows damage, such as multiple unrelated system errors.

- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to complete. - Run

If SFC reports repaired files but cvirte.dll is still missing, return to the runtime version and installer steps. Windows integrity repair cannot substitute for an NI runtime package that was never deployed.

Is cvirte.dll the same as VCRUNTIME140_1.dll?
No. The filenames identify different runtime technologies. cvirte.dll is associated with the LabWindows/CVI Run-Time Engine, while names such as VCRUNTIME140_1.dll belong to the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime family.
Installing or updating a Visual C++ Redistributable can be appropriate when an application specifically reports a missing VCRUNTIME or MSVCP file. It is not NI’s direct remedy for a cvirte.dll error. If a program reports both kinds of missing files, follow the publisher’s dependency list and install each required runtime from its respective vendor.
Should I download a standalone cvirte.dll file?
No. NI’s supported paths are a matching Run-Time Engine installation or an application installer that includes the runtime. A loose DLL from an unrelated download site may be the wrong version, omit the cvirte resources directory and other components, or expose the computer to an unverified file.

Work through these checks before changing unrelated Windows settings:
