Use Flexbox when your component is organized along one axis—a row or a column—and the content should help determine item sizes. Use CSS Grid when you must coordinate rows and columns, reserve shared tracks, name layout regions, or place elements in layers. A navigation bar, button group, or vertical stack usually starts with Flexbox. A page shell, aligned card matrix, or dashboard with defined regions usually starts with Grid. They are not competing replacements: a Grid area commonly contains a small Flexbox group. The reliable test is dimensionality, not whether the component is large or small.

What is the difference between CSS Grid and Flexbox?

Flexbox is a one-dimensional layout system. It lays items along a main axis, either horizontally or vertically, and distributes available space by allowing items to grow, shrink, wrap, and align. Grid is a two-dimensional system: it defines column and row tracks together, then places items into that structure.

This distinction also describes how each system thinks about sizing. Flexbox is content-out: the items and their content influence how much space each item receives. Grid is layout-in: you establish the track structure first, and items are placed into it. These are tendencies rather than restrictions, but they provide a dependable starting point.

  • Choose Flexbox when one direction is the design problem and item distribution should adapt to content.
  • Choose Grid when both directions matter at the same time, columns or rows must line up across items, or placement needs explicit lines, areas, or layering.

MDN’s definitions lead to the same practical rule: ask whether you need to control only the row or column, or both together. A tiny component can be two-dimensional, while a large region can remain a one-dimensional stack.

How does Flexbox work?

Flexbox creates a flex container and arranges its direct children along a main axis. With flex-direction: row, the main axis is horizontal; with flex-direction: column, it is vertical. The perpendicular direction is the cross axis. Properties such as justify-content distribute free space on the main axis, while align-items aligns items on the cross axis.

Use Flexbox when content should influence the size

A flex item can grow to consume spare room, shrink when the container gets tighter, or retain a preferred basis. That makes Flexbox useful for controls whose labels vary, navigation links with different text lengths, and toolbars that need to remain usable as the viewport changes.

.toolbar {
  display: flex;
  align-items: center;
  justify-content: space-between;
  gap: 1rem;
  flex-wrap: wrap;
}

.toolbar .actions {
  display: flex;
  gap: .5rem;
}

The outer container keeps the title and actions on one primary line when there is room. gap supplies consistent spacing without margin calculations, and flex-wrap lets the groups move to another line when the available width is insufficient.

Use a column direction for vertical groups

Forms, menus, and card content often need one item below another rather than a coordinated matrix. A column flex container can align those items and control the space between them:

.form-fields {
  display: flex;
  flex-direction: column;
  gap: 1rem;
  align-items: stretch;
}

Because the layout has one primary direction, you can change the content or add a field without designing a second set of column tracks.

What does wrapping actually do?

When flex-wrap: wrap is enabled, Flexbox creates separate flex lines. Each line distributes its own free space. The first line might contain three items and the second line two; those lines do not share column positions or widths. This is an important boundary: wrapping makes a one-dimensional system occupy multiple visual lines, but it does not turn it into a two-dimensional grid.

How does CSS Grid work?

Grid defines rows and columns as tracks. You can declare the tracks explicitly, let the browser auto-place items into them, assign named areas, or position an item by line numbers. Because rows and columns belong to one shared structure, items in different rows can align to the same columns.

Define a page shell with coordinated regions

A page with a header, sidebar, main content, and footer has relationships in both directions. Grid expresses those relationships directly:

.page {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: 16rem 1fr;
  grid-template-rows: auto 1fr auto;
  grid-template-areas:
    "header header"
    "sidebar main"
    "footer footer";
  min-height: 100vh;
}

header  { grid-area: header; }
aside   { grid-area: sidebar; }
main    { grid-area: main; }
footer  { grid-area: footer; }

The named areas make the intended structure visible in the stylesheet. The header and footer span both columns, while the sidebar and main content occupy the middle row. This is more direct than trying to make several independent flex containers agree on widths.

Align cards across shared tracks

For a card collection, Grid can generate responsive columns while keeping each row on the same track structure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
.card-list {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fit, minmax(16rem, 1fr));
  gap: 1.25rem;
}

minmax(16rem, 1fr) gives each track a minimum before it moves to another row, and the flexible maximum allows remaining space to be shared. auto-fit lets the browser fit as many tracks as the available width supports, collapsing empty tracks when fewer cards are present. The result is still a two-dimensional track system even though the number of columns changes responsively.

Place or layer items explicitly

Grid supports placement by line and area, so an item can occupy a precise region or share a grid cell with another item. That is useful for overlays such as a badge over an image:

.media {
  display: grid;
}

.media > img,
.media > .badge {
  grid-column: 1;
  grid-row: 1;
}

.badge {
  align-self: start;
  justify-self: end;
}

Both children occupy the first cell, and alignment places the badge over the image. You do not need absolute positioning merely to create this kind of grid-layered composition.

Need Prefer Why
Navigation links, button rows, inline controls, or a vertical stack Flexbox There is one primary axis, and content-driven distribution and alignment are useful.
A page shell with header, sidebar, main content, and footer tracks Grid Rows and columns describe coordinated regions and explicit relationships.
Cards that must align in shared columns across rows Grid Shared two-dimensional tracks prevent each wrapped line from aligning independently.
A single row that must space items and adapt to available width Flexbox Items can grow, shrink, wrap, and distribute free space along one axis.
Overlapping or layered interface pieces Grid Grid placement allows items to share cells and align by lines or areas.
A Grid area whose contents need local alignment Nested Flexbox Grid handles the outer structure; Flexbox handles the one-axis content group inside it.

The table is about the relationship you need, not the visual size of the component. A compact date picker may require rows and columns, while a full-width footer may simply be a horizontal flex container.

Why do wrapped Flexbox rows fail to line up?

Each flex line calculates its own item sizes and free-space distribution. A three-item first line therefore has no obligation to use the same column boundaries as a two-item second line. If you find yourself assigning fixed widths, repeating margin adjustments, or adding alignment workarounds solely to make rows match, you are asking Flexbox to provide a shared track system it does not have.

Switch the collection to Grid when cross-row alignment is part of the design:

.products {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: repeat(3, minmax(0, 1fr));
  gap: 1rem;
}

@media (max-width:  fiftyrem) {
  .products {
    grid-template-columns: repeat(2, minmax(0, 1fr));
  }
}

Replace the illustrative breakpoint value with the breakpoint appropriate to your layout; the important change is that every row uses the same declared tracks. For an unknown number of columns, the repeat(auto-fit, minmax(...)) pattern lets Grid generate them algorithmically while preserving shared alignment.

How do Flexbox and Grid respond to changing screen sizes?

Both systems are responsive, but they adapt in different directions. Flexbox changes item growth, shrinkage, and line composition. Grid can retain a defined track structure or generate tracks with responsive functions such as auto-fit and auto-fill.

Flexbox: change item distribution and line composition

A row of controls can stay on one line while there is room, then wrap when it is not. Flexible bases and growth factors determine how spare space is shared; shrink behavior determines what yields first when the container narrows. This is ideal when preserving the order of controls matters more than preserving column coordinates.

.actions {
  display: flex;
  flex-wrap: wrap;
  gap: .75rem;
}

.actions > .primary {
  flex: 1 1 12rem;
}

.actions > .secondary {
  flex: 0 1 auto;
}

Here the primary action can take additional room but has a preferred basis, while the secondary action remains closer to its content size. The line composition can change as space changes.

Grid: change the number or size of tracks

Grid is useful when each card or panel should occupy a common column system at every width. Explicit media-query tracks give you direct control; algorithmic tracks reduce breakpoint-specific rules. A grid can move from four columns to two or one while keeping each row tied to the same column definitions at that width.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that Grid is rigid or that Flexbox is automatically fluid. Both are responsive; they simply express different constraints. Choose the one whose constraints match the design before adding breakpoints.

Can you use Grid and Flexbox together?

Yes. They are complementary layout tools, and nesting them is often the clearest solution. Use Grid for the two-dimensional relationship between regions, then use Flexbox inside a region whose content follows one axis.

.dashboard {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: 14rem 1fr;
  gap: 1.5rem;
}

.dashboard-nav {
  display: flex;
  flex-direction: column;
  gap: .5rem;
}

.dashboard-toolbar {
  display: flex;
  align-items: center;
  justify-content: space-between;
  gap: 1rem;
}

The dashboard establishes the sidebar and content columns with Grid. The navigation is a vertical one-axis list, and the toolbar is a horizontal one-axis group, so Flexbox is appropriate inside both areas. This avoids forcing one system to handle relationships it was not designed to express.

How do you decide between Grid and Flexbox step by step?

Use this short design check before writing layout rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the relationships. Sketch whether the items are ordered mainly left-to-right, top-to-bottom, or in a matrix of rows and columns.
  2. Count the axes you must control. If only one axis needs distribution and alignment, start with Flexbox. If both axes must be coordinated, start with Grid.
  3. Check whether columns must match across rows. If they do, use Grid tracks rather than wrapped flex lines.
  4. Decide who should determine size. Content-driven sizing points toward Flexbox; a deliberate track structure points toward Grid.
  5. List placement requirements. Named regions, explicit line placement, or overlapping items are strong Grid signals.
  6. Test the narrowest realistic width and the longest realistic content. Flexbox should wrap or shrink in a controlled way; Grid tracks should not create unexpected overflow.
  7. Look for workarounds. If a Flexbox solution accumulates fixed widths solely to align rows, reconsider it as Grid. If a Grid rule is only creating a single content row, Flexbox may be simpler.

What are the most common mistakes?

Choosing by component size

A large area is not automatically a Grid problem, and a small widget is not automatically a Flexbox problem. The deciding factor is the number of coordinated axes. A full-width line of links can remain one-dimensional; a small two-by-two control can need Grid.

Treating wrapped Flexbox as a card grid

Wrapping gives you multiple lines, not shared columns. If visual alignment between rows is important, move to Grid instead of adding increasingly fragile width rules.

Using Grid when only content distribution matters

Grid can create a single row, but it introduces track definitions that may not add value when labels and controls should simply share available space. Flexbox communicates that one-axis intent and naturally handles growth, shrinkage, and wrapping.

Making Grid do every local alignment job

A page can have a Grid shell and still need Flexbox within its header, navigation, or action group. Keeping the local one-axis behavior in Flexbox makes each rule easier to reason about.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring content variability

Short labels, long translations, and optional controls change how much space items need. Test those cases rather than assuming the sample text represents the final dimensions. Flexbox’s content-out behavior may be the advantage for a variable control row; Grid’s tracks may be the advantage when consistent columns matter more.

What is the practical rule for CSS Grid versus Flexbox?

Start with Flexbox for one-axis groups: navigation, button rows, toolbars, and vertical stacks. Start with Grid for two-axis structures: page shells, aligned card collections, explicit regions, and layered compositions. When one system is being bent with fixed widths or alignment hacks, that is evidence to switch—or to use the other system inside it—rather than evidence that more overrides are needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use CSS Grid for a single row?

Yes. Grid can define one row and is valid when that row is part of a larger track-based design or needs line-based placement. If the row only needs content-driven spacing, alignment, and wrapping, Flexbox usually expresses the intent with fewer constraints.

Does CSS Grid replace Flexbox completely?

No. Grid and Flexbox solve different relationship problems. A common production pattern is Grid for the page or component shell and Flexbox for the controls, links, or text groups inside each Grid area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when text gets longer in a Flexbox layout?

Flex items participate in the container’s grow and shrink calculations, so a longer label can change item widths or cause a wrapped line when wrapping is enabled. Test realistic long content because line composition can change even when the CSS is unchanged.

Why do two rows of flex items have different column widths?

Flex lines are independent layout calculations, so each line distributes its own free space. If rows must share column boundaries, define those boundaries with Grid tracks instead of relying on wrapped Flexbox.
