There is no single best crypto-tax program for every portfolio. Choose by matching the exact exchanges, wallets, blockchains, transaction count and tax jurisdiction you used, then confirm that the plan includes the filing reports you need. As of October 25, 2026, published entry prices range from $49 for 100 transactions at Koinly and CoinLedger to $59 for 100 transactions at CoinTracker. Free plans can import or track data, but they may not provide downloadable tax forms.

The practical comparison is therefore not “which brand is best?” It is whether a service can import every account, reconcile transfers and missing cost basis, classify DeFi or NFT activity correctly, and export a report accepted in your country. Prices, limits, integrations and tax rules can change, so verify the vendor’s live support and pricing pages before paying.

Which crypto tax software supports the exchanges and activity I used?

Support depends on the specific account, chain and transaction type, not on an aggregate integrations number. API synchronization, an exchange CSV, a custom CSV and a public wallet-address import are different data routes; one may work even when another does not.

Product Published plan information checked October 25, 2026 Documented capabilities Question to answer before buying
Koinly Free account lists up to 10,000 transactions, but tax reports are unavailable at that level. Newbie starts at $49 per tax year for 100 transactions; the page also lists $99 for 1,000 and $199 starting for 3,000+. Exchange API and CSV imports, chain imports, EVM auto-sync, DeFi and NFT support, multiple accounting methods, transfer matching and negative-balance warnings. Will the exact wallet or exchange sync, and does the paid tier produce the jurisdiction-specific report you need?
CoinLedger Free portfolio tracking; $49 for up to 100 transactions, $99 for up to 1,000 and $199+ for 3,000+. Vendor states 1,000+ integrations; API, exchange CSV, custom CSV and public-wallet imports; DeFi, NFT and margin support; error reconciliation; Form 8949 and exports to major tax products. At your transaction count, is the import automatic or manual, and what exactly is included in the final report?
CoinTracker Free portfolio tracking without downloadable tax forms; $59/year for 100 transactions and $199/year for 1,000, with higher tiers listed. Paid plans document Form 8949 and Schedule D, TurboTax and H&R Block integrations, DeFi import and categorization; Prime adds tax-loss harvesting and Ultra adds cost-basis options. Do its filing integrations and workflow justify the price for your count and country?
CoinTracking Current vendor prices were not stated in the available comparison. A September 2026 editorial comparison describes 400+ import options, 25+ reports, portfolio tools and an unlimited transaction tier. Confirm current pricing, the exact import method and whether “unlimited” applies to your selected plan.
Summ Current vendor prices and caps were not stated in the available comparison. The editorial comparison positions it for high-volume portfolios and discusses onchain imports. Which chains are supported, what transaction history is included and what is the present tier price?
Blockpit Current vendor prices were not stated in the available comparison. The comparison includes it as a regional option, particularly for European users. Does it generate the report required by your country and support every exchange you used?
Awaken Tax Current vendor prices were not stated in the available comparison. The comparison positions it for DeFi and other onchain activity. Are your protocols, bridges and chains covered, and how are their transactions classified?
TokenTax Current vendor prices were not stated in the available comparison. The comparison describes software with optional professional tax assistance. Does the selected service only review crypto data, prepare a return, or do both, and what is the current fee?

Official vendor claims should be checked against a live support directory. The broader product descriptions and rankings in the September 1, 2026 comparison are editorial judgments, not an accuracy test or a guarantee that any import will classify your records correctly. Read the comparison’s methodology and scope.

How do the published prices compare at the same transaction count?

Compare plans at a matched volume and with the same report access. An inexpensive entry tier can cost more once your transaction count crosses its limit or when a free account only displays a portfolio.

Transaction allowance Koinly CoinLedger CoinTracker
Free level Up to 10,000 transactions listed, but tax reports unavailable Portfolio tracking; tax-report inclusion not stated in the cited table Portfolio tracking; downloadable tax forms excluded
Up to 100 transactions $49 per tax year $49 $59 per year
Up to 1,000 transactions $99 per tax year $99 $199 per year
3,000 or more $199 starting price $199 or more Higher tiers listed; exact comparable figure not stated

These are vendor-posted prices accessed October 25, 2026 and may change. Koinly’s pricing table, CoinLedger’s pricing and features, and CoinTracker’s pricing page are the authoritative places to recheck a checkout total. Taxes, regional currency, promotional terms and add-ons can alter the amount shown at payment.

Is free crypto tax software enough to file?

Usually, free access is enough to test imports or monitor a portfolio, not to complete a filing. Koinly explicitly lists tax reports as unavailable on its free tier, while CoinTracker says its free plan does not include downloadable tax forms. CoinLedger’s free offering is described as portfolio tracking, so confirm report availability before assuming that an import can become a return.

What to test before upgrading

  • Import one exchange and one wallet and check whether deposits, withdrawals and trades appear with timestamps and asset symbols.
  • Look for missing-cost-basis, duplicate and negative-balance warnings rather than relying on a headline gain number.
  • Open the export or report screen and identify the forms required by your jurisdiction.
  • Check whether correcting a transaction, rerunning a sync and downloading the final report are included in the plan you are considering.

A free preview can expose unsupported data early. It is not evidence that your records are complete or that the resulting tax treatment is correct.

How can I verify support for an exchange, wallet or blockchain?

Use the provider’s support directory and follow the same checks for every account. Do not infer compatibility from “1,000+ integrations” or another total; CoinLedger describes that number as a vendor figure, not an independent count of working connections.

  1. List every source. Record each exchange account, sub-account, hardware or software wallet, custody service, NFT marketplace, staking service and chain. Include old accounts used during the tax year.
  2. Choose the correct route. An API may retrieve trades but omit staking rewards; a CSV may contain fills but no transfers; a public address may show onchain activity without your exchange cost basis. Note the route recommended for each source.
  3. Check the transaction types. Search for spot trades, derivatives, margin, lending, liquidity pools, bridges, airdrops, NFT sales and fiat deposits separately. “DeFi supported” does not establish that your protocol is covered.
  4. Import a sample first. Compare the software’s records with the exchange ledger or blockchain explorer for a short date range before importing the entire year.
  5. Confirm historical coverage. Ask whether the connection retrieves the years you need and whether deleted orders, delisted assets or closed accounts require a manual CSV.
  6. Document gaps. Keep the original CSVs, API export dates and wallet addresses. If a source is unsupported, ask whether a custom CSV format is accepted and what fields are mandatory.

Which features matter for DeFi, staking, NFTs and other complex activity?

Complex transactions create classification and cost-basis problems that a simple exchange import may not solve. Match a feature to the activity you actually performed.

DeFi and lending

CoinTracker documents automated categorization for activities such as liquidity pools and lending. CoinLedger lists DeFi support, while Koinly lists DeFi and NFT support. Those descriptions do not prove that every protocol, bridge or wrapped-asset event is handled automatically; test representative transactions and inspect the category assigned.

Staking, mining and airdrops

Verify whether rewards are recognized at receipt, how the software records the asset’s value and whether later disposals link to that acquisition. If the program cannot identify the source or fair-market-value timestamp, preserve the platform statement and correct the transaction manually or seek professional advice.

NFTs, margin and derivatives

CoinLedger specifically lists NFT and margin support. Ask whether the import includes fees, collateral movements, liquidations and transfers between spot and derivatives wallets. A report that lists proceeds without the associated basis or fees can produce misleading gains.

Accounting methods and country rules

Koinly lists multiple accounting methods. Availability of a method, tax form or local report varies by country, so select the jurisdiction and tax year first. A U.S. form export should not be assumed suitable for a European or other national return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I reconcile missing transactions and wrong cost basis?

Reconciliation is the quality-control stage between importing and exporting. Missing acquisition history can make an asset’s basis zero; duplicated deposits can inflate holdings; an unrecognized transfer can look like a taxable sale.

Use a repeatable review

  1. Run the software’s balance or error scan and open every exception, not only the largest gain.
  2. Match withdrawals to deposits across your own wallets and exchanges. A transfer should generally have a sending and receiving record with compatible time, asset and amount.
  3. Check that fees are attached to the correct disposal or acquisition and are not imported twice.
  4. Add earlier lots when the current-year account received assets acquired in a prior year.
  5. Compare end-of-year balances with statements or wallet balances, allowing for staking locks, dust and assets the software cannot value.
  6. Export a transaction-level audit file and retain the source records before filing.

Koinly lists transfer matching and negative-balance warnings; CoinLedger lists error reconciliation. Treat these as tools for finding exceptions, not as a guarantee that every exception has been found.

Which option fits different portfolio situations?

Small, straightforward exchange portfolio

Price the 100-transaction tiers first. Koinly and CoinLedger list $49, while CoinTracker lists $59. Choose the one that imports your exchange without manual cleanup and includes the report your tax preparer accepts.

Several wallets with onchain activity

Prioritize chain coverage, transfer matching and protocol-level classification over the lowest headline price. Import a representative bridge, swap and reward before committing to an annual plan.

High-volume trader

Model the total cost at your actual count, including more than 3,000 transactions and any extra years. The editorial comparison describes CoinTracking and Summ as high-volume-oriented, but current caps and prices were not established there; verify them directly.

European or other non-U.S. taxpayer

Confirm local forms, accounting methods, language and filing-year support. The comparison identifies Blockpit as a regional option, but only the provider can confirm whether its output matches your country’s rules.

Someone who wants human help

TokenTax is described in the comparison as offering optional professional tax assistance. Establish in writing whether the service reviews imported data, prepares a return, signs it, or simply answers questions, and obtain the current scope and fee.

What are U.S. taxpayers still responsible for after using software?

Software organizes data; it does not transfer the taxpayer’s reporting duty. The IRS states, "For U.S. tax purposes, digital assets are considered property, not currency." It also says, "If you have digital asset transactions, you must report them whether or not they result in a taxable gain or loss." See the IRS digital-assets guidance for current federal instructions.

Keep records supporting positions on the return: acquisition and receipt dates, amounts, sales or other dispositions, exchanges, relevant fair market values, fees and wallet or exchange statements. Check that the generated forms agree with those records and with information reported elsewhere on your return. State, local and non-U.S. rules can differ, and complex facts such as gifts, inherited assets, employment compensation, lending defaults or business activity warrant advice from a qualified tax professional.

What is a practical buying checklist?

  • Count transactions across all sources for the exact tax year, including transfers and onchain events that may be counted differently by vendors.
  • Verify each exchange, account type, wallet and chain in the live support directory.
  • Confirm the import route and historical date range for every source.
  • Compare the plan’s report forms, accounting methods, country coverage and export formats.
  • Price the tier at your real count, not the advertised entry number.
  • Test transfer matching, basis editing, fee handling and error warnings on sample data.
  • Download and archive source files, correction notes and the final report.
  • Recheck prices, limits and integrations immediately before purchase because vendor terms change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch crypto tax software after importing my data?

Yes, but export the original exchange files, wallet histories and any corrected transaction ledger first. A new service may classify transfers or cost basis differently, so compare its opening balances with the prior report before relying on the result.

Do crypto tax programs report my data directly to the IRS?

Most services generate forms or files for you to submit through your tax-filing process; importing data is not the same as filing a return. Review the provider’s privacy policy and your filing workflow to see what is transmitted and when.

Why does my software show a gain when I only moved coins between wallets?

The receiving transfer may not have been matched to the withdrawal, or one side may have been imported with a different asset symbol or fee amount. Pair the records manually and verify the transaction hashes, timestamps and quantities.

Should I include transactions from an exchange account I closed?

Yes, if it had activity during the tax year. Request its historical CSV or statements before access expires and retain evidence of the account’s balances and transfers.
