Exchange statements may be enough for U.S. federal crypto tax reporting when your activity is limited to one exchange, its records are complete, and you can verify the basis and history of every relevant transaction. They are not a complete tax return, and receiving a tax form does not remove your obligation to report taxable activity or keep supporting records.
For transactions in 2025, Coinbase says its Form 1099-DA reports proceeds only. The IRS requires taxpayers to calculate basis before filing. If you used multiple exchanges or wallets, transferred assets in, have missing acquisition records, or earned rewards, you will need to reconcile more than one statement—and software or professional tax help may make that work more manageable.

Are exchange statements enough for crypto taxes?
Sometimes. A statement from one exchange can be a useful source record when it covers all of your relevant activity and contains enough detail to support the figures on your return. It is not automatically a complete account of your crypto activity, and a reported proceeds amount is not the same as your taxable gain or loss.
The IRS treats digital assets as property for U.S. federal tax purposes. It says transactions must be reported whether or not you receive Form 1099-DA, and taxpayers must keep records supporting their return positions. A broker form helps document transactions the broker reports; it does not establish that every wallet, platform, or reportable activity is included.
#1 Best Overall
Exchange statements are more likely to be sufficient if all of these conditions hold:
- Your relevant activity took place on that exchange, with no other exchange, wallet, or on-chain activity to account for.
- The statement and transaction history are complete and accurate for the tax year.
- You have the acquisition dates and basis needed to calculate gain or loss, including for any assets transferred in.
- You can trace reported amounts back to transaction-level records and explain any differences between records and tax forms.
- Your activity does not include additional categories—such as staking rewards or other income—that need separate tax treatment or reporting analysis.
If one or more of these conditions is not met, a single exchange statement should be treated as an input to your tax calculation, not as the whole calculation.

What is the difference between an exchange statement and crypto tax software?
An exchange statement reports activity visible to a particular broker or platform. Crypto tax software may help consolidate records from several accounts and wallets and organize transactions for review, but it cannot make incomplete source records complete or relieve you of the responsibility to verify basis.
| Question | Exchange statement or history | Crypto tax software |
|---|---|---|
| What activity can it cover? | Usually the activity the exchange itself services and records. It may not include other exchanges, wallets, or on-chain activity. | Can be useful for consolidating records from multiple exchanges and wallets. Integration coverage varies; the sources cited here do not establish which product supports the most services. |
| Does it provide complete basis? | Not necessarily. An exchange may lack the original acquisition information for assets transferred in, and a proceeds-only form does not provide basis. | May help reconcile acquisition and transfer records, but it cannot verify missing facts without supporting records. The taxpayer remains responsible for basis. |
| Does it replace tax forms or a return? | No. A broker form reports information, and the taxpayer must determine what belongs on the return. | No. A calculation or summary still needs review against source transactions and the taxpayer’s facts. |
| When is it most useful? | When one platform’s records cover the relevant activity and the taxpayer can support basis and return figures. | When records are spread across accounts, wallets, or transaction types and need to be brought together for reconciliation. |
Neither option is a guarantee of correctness. A useful standard is reviewability: can you trace each number you use on the return back to the source record, identify what asset and transaction it concerns, and substantiate the basis or income amount? The IRS says taxpayers should retain transaction records, including asset type, date and time, units, fair market value, and basis as needed to establish their return position.

What does Form 1099-DA report, and when does basis appear?
Form 1099-DA is a broker statement that can report gross proceeds and, in some cases, basis. The IRS’s reporting timeline distinguishes proceeds from basis: broker gross-proceeds reporting applies to transactions effected on or after January 1, 2025, while basis reporting for certain covered transactions applies to transactions effected on or after January 1, 2026.
| Transaction timing | What the cited guidance says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| On or after January 1, 2025 | IRS broker-reporting guidance calls for gross-proceeds reporting. | Do not assume the form includes basis or every transaction relevant to your return. |
| On or after January 1, 2026 | IRS guidance provides for basis reporting on certain covered transactions. | Basis reporting applies only to certain covered transactions; verify the form and the broker’s coverage for your assets. |
| Tax year 2025, Coinbase-specific | Coinbase says its Form 1099-DA reports proceeds only. It says basis reporting for certain covered assets begins with tax year 2026. | Coinbase describes pre-January 1, 2026 acquisitions and assets transferred from an external wallet or exchange as noncovered for its basis reporting, absent relevant records. |
The dates are not a promise that every taxpayer will receive complete basis information. The IRS expressly instructs taxpayers to calculate basis before filing. Coinbase’s details apply to its own reporting and should not be assumed to describe another exchange’s form or policies.
Coinbase also says its Coinbase Taxes reporting excludes Coinbase Wallet and legacy Coinbase Pro activity. That matters if your activity spans those services: an account-level tax report can omit records held elsewhere, even when you use the same company’s products. Check each provider’s current documentation and download transaction histories for every service you used.
How do you decide whether to use software or get help?
Start with the records you actually have, rather than with the name or format of a tax form. If your activity is uncomplicated and the records are complete, you may be able to prepare a return from those records. If the records are fragmented or basis is missing, consolidation and review become the central tasks.
Use exchange records as your main working set when
- One exchange contains all relevant activity for the year.
- You can document how each asset was acquired and establish its basis.
- Transaction histories agree with any broker statements you received.
- You have checked for activity outside ordinary sales, such as rewards or transactions through another wallet.
Consider software when
- You need to bring together transaction histories from more than one exchange or wallet.
- Assets moved between platforms and the receiving platform does not show their original purchase records.
- You need to identify gaps, duplicates, or transfers that have not been reconciled across records.
- You want a consolidated transaction summary that you can check against original statements and records.
Consider tax-professional advice when
- You cannot establish basis or acquisition history from the available records.
- Your activity includes transactions whose tax treatment is unclear from the records or from general reporting guidance.
- Statements, transaction histories, and your own records conflict and you cannot resolve the difference.
- You need advice about how a particular transaction applies to your facts.
Software is a record-organization and calculation aid, not a substitute for a taxpayer’s review. The available evidence does not establish that a particular product is required, universally best, or able to handle every exchange or wallet. Confirm integration coverage and inspect the resulting transaction details before relying on any summary.
How should you reconcile crypto records before filing?
Use a repeatable reconciliation process: gather records from every place you used, connect acquisitions to later dispositions, and check the resulting tax figures against the forms you received. Keep the underlying records even if a software report or broker form presents a cleaner summary.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- List every account and wallet. Include exchanges, wallets, and any other service where you bought, received, sold, exchanged, or otherwise disposed of digital assets. Make the list for the tax year you are filing; do not assume one exchange’s report covers activity elsewhere.
- Download the source records. Save transaction histories, broker statements, and records showing receipts or transfers. Preserve the original files so you can inspect the transaction details if a summary omits or groups activity.
- Match each asset’s acquisition history. For relevant transactions, identify the asset type, date and time, units, fair market value when applicable, and basis. Pay particular attention to assets transferred into an exchange, because the receiving platform may not have the original purchase record.
- Reconcile activity across services. Compare records for transfers and activity that appear in more than one place. A single exchange may show an incoming asset without the earlier acquisition details, while the sending wallet or exchange may hold the missing history.
- Separate transaction categories for review. Do not treat every entry as an ordinary sale. Identify sales, exchanges, other dispositions, receipts that may be income, and activity such as staking or lending that may need separate analysis.
- Compare your calculation with broker forms. Check proceeds and any basis shown against your source history. A difference is a prompt to investigate the records and reporting scope, not a reason by itself to replace your own supported calculation with the form total.
- Retain the evidence supporting your return. Keep records that explain your transaction details, basis, and amounts reported. The IRS says records must support the position taken on the return.
This process is useful whether you organize transactions manually or use software. Software can help surface incomplete records, but a clean-looking report does not prove that the underlying acquisition history is correct.
Which tax forms may apply to digital asset transactions?
The relevant form depends on the activity and the facts. IRS guidance identifies Form 8949 for sales, exchanges, or other dispositions of digital assets held as capital assets. It identifies Schedule 1 for certain other ordinary income related to digital assets; the appropriate form depends on the type of income and circumstances.

A 1099-DA is a broker’s information statement, not a substitute for deciding where transactions belong on a tax return. Keep the distinction clear: the broker reports information within its reporting scope, while you determine what must be reported and calculate basis. A transaction may require analysis beyond simply copying a form’s proceeds field.
The IRS also lists temporary broker Form 1099-DA reporting exceptions for categories including wrapping and unwrapping, liquidity-provider transactions, staking, lending, short sales, and notional principal contracts, pending further guidance. These exceptions concern broker reporting; they do not create a blanket exemption from tax or from a taxpayer’s own reporting duties. The IRS notes that the exception does not apply to rewards or other compensation earned in these transactions.
What are the most common mistakes when relying on an exchange statement?
The central mistake is treating a broker’s records as the complete history of the taxpayer’s assets. Check for these specific gaps before filing:
- Assuming a form is required before reporting applies. The IRS says digital asset transactions must be reported whether or not a Form 1099-DA arrives.
- Confusing proceeds with taxable gain. Proceeds alone do not establish gain or loss; basis and transaction details are needed.
- Assuming the form covers every account. A broker’s view may be limited to its own services. Coinbase, for example, says its Coinbase Taxes reporting excludes Coinbase Wallet and legacy Coinbase Pro activity.
- Accepting missing basis as zero or treating the form as the answer. Basis must be calculated before filing. For transferred-in assets, look for the original acquisition information in the sending account or wallet.
- Reading a broker-reporting exception as a tax exemption. Temporary exceptions to 1099-DA reporting do not settle the taxpayer’s reporting obligation, and the IRS says rewards or compensation earned in the listed transactions are not covered by the exception.
- Relying on a software summary without checking its inputs. Consolidation helps only if the relevant accounts are included and imported transaction details are accurate enough to support the return.
If you cannot account for a material record gap or explain a discrepancy, pause before filing and seek qualified tax advice. No general statement about an exchange or software tool can determine the treatment of every transaction.

Does crypto tax software replace an exchange statement?
No. Software can organize information from accounts and wallets, but the exchange or wallet transaction history remains an important source for checking what happened. Retain the original records and verify that any summary reflects the complete activity you need to report.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if my 1099-DA and transaction history show different proceeds?
Compare the form’s reporting scope with the transaction-level history and identify which transactions account for the difference. Keep the records behind your return calculation; if you cannot explain the discrepancy, ask a qualified tax professional rather than assuming either number is automatically complete.

A missing broker form does not by itself remove the reporting obligation. Wallet records can help establish transaction details and connect transfers to acquisition history, so preserve them alongside exchange statements.
Do temporary Form 1099-DA exceptions mean staking rewards are not taxable?
No. The IRS describes certain temporary exceptions to broker reporting, not a general tax exemption, and says the exception does not apply to rewards or other compensation earned in those transactions. The treatment of a particular reward still depends on the taxpayer’s facts.
Does the 2026 basis-reporting start mean my broker will know the basis of every asset I sell?
No. The IRS timeline applies to basis reporting for certain covered transactions, and the cited Coinbase guidance excludes some noncovered assets from its basis reporting. Keep your own acquisition records even when a form includes a basis figure.
